When journalist Jake Warren met Aimen Dean -- a former Al Qaeda bomb-maker turned agent for the British intelligence service MI6, who happened to be super smart and deeply knowledgeable about Middle East politics -- he knew he had hit storytelling pay dirt. So when Jake started his own podcasting company a few years later, he was determined to get Aimen behind the mic. But there were a couple of problems: the guy could talk for nine hours, and would sometimes get pretty deep in the weeds. So they brought in Thomas Small -- an author, documentary film producer, Middle East scholar, and good friend of Aimen’s - to be co host. The resulting podcast, CONFLICTED, from Jake’s company Message Heard, breaks down the complexities of history, religion and politics of the Middle East and puts them in a global context. The first season begins with 9/11 and focuses on the War on Terror and associated conflicts in the region. The second season is about the post-Cold War New World Order and how that era of US dominance affected the Middle East, and beyond. To the listener, it sounds like Thomas and Aimen are having a friendly conversation, sprinkled with Aimen’s often heart-stopping personal stories. But as you’ll hear, there’s lots of work that goes on behind the scenes to get to this place. In this episode, join 3 Clips host and Marketing Showrunners founder Jay Acunzo as he talks with Jake Warren about the large and small choices that make CONFLICTED a success - not only with Middle East politics nerds, but among a general audience too.NEWSLETTER:Subscribe to “Playing Favorites,” the newsletter from Jay Acunzo and Marketing Showrunners, exploring creativity, content, marketing, and making someone's favorite podcast. Scott Monty faced daunting challenges making this show for TD Bank. First off, it's a bank. They're not exactly the most creative brand in the world. Second, the show is meant for the internal team. Yes, this is a corporate communications, internal-only show. Why? And how does that change things? (According to Scott, quite a bit: You have to learn to avoid being an overly cheery marketer promoting something to your own team, and get in the minds of the audience just the same as you would making an external show.)Additionally, Scott's an external contributor, a contractor hired to make a show. Finally, this show is a NARRATIVE-style show. It's a risk. It features raw, human emotion and stories -- not taling heads spewing soundbites. Scott navigated internal stakeholders, built a genuinely good show, and did so against the odds. Join 3 Clips host and Marketing Showrunners founder Jay Acunzo as he talks to Scott about how it all went down. The pair then dissects three small clips revealing a few big lessons. Over the last few weeks I’ve been talking a lot about objectives, goals and tactics. One of the ways you can identify your objectives is to think about what you would be proud to say you’ve accomplished a year from today. Another way would be to ask yourself the question, “What if I was successful?” Or, “What does success look like for me?” Sometimes we have all these ideas in our head, but are unsure about the ultimate goal we’re trying to accomplish. Pick one of these ideas and ask these questions, you’ll be surprised at how many gaps you can fill in just a short conversation with yourself. One of the biggest moments that changed my perspective on where I was taking my career was this mindset. Often we ask what we've done in the last year. But, what do you want to say you've accomplished? As leaders we are always trying to grow, but the grind of daily tasks can get in our way to thinking about the future. Don't just use your email as a todo list, use this weekend to think about 2020. Close your eyes and imagine you're with several of your closest friends, family and coworkers at Thanksgiving next year. Someone asks you, "What was your proudest accomplishment in 2020?" What do you say? This is part of my Get better Friday, all about being a better leader. Each piece is about me describing what I’ve been practicing to help me become a better leader and coach for my team, my career and my personal life. This week: To accomplish anything requires a vision of what success looks before you begin. After, you have a mix of objectives, goals and tactics that will eventually be the work that will lead you to that vision. The difference between objectives, goals and tactics. We often conflate the three together, mixing tactics with goals or interpreting an objective as a tactic. When you work with a vision in mind, setting objectives that help push you to that vision will make setting goals and tactics easier. Everyday you need to ask yourself, “Is this getting me closer to my vision? To my life or career objectives?” Contact me Would love to hear from you on this topic!
