Currently we’re between seasons at 3 Clips. In the meantime let’s listen in on an old episode of Audience. Newt Schottlekote created their first audio drama in 2017 when they were only 15 years old. That led to the creation of Caldera Studios, a production company where Newt produces their work including their latest series, Where the Stars Fell. In this episode, Newt and Stuart discuss the creative process of making a fiction podcast, the need for budgets in audio drama, and strategies for crowdfunding. No, this is not a new 3 Clips episode. Since we’re taking a break from producing new episodes, we wanted to share another Castos Original, ‘Audience’. This episode was produced by Stuart Barefoot and features podcast producer Marcus dePaula, a former live audio engineer who spent years touring with national acts like Michelle Branch, Creed and Jars of Clay. Cyber crime, hacking and the dark side of the internet. In many ways, Darknet Diaries seems like a scary podcast and at times it can be. But it’s not scary in the sense that you need a lot of technical knowledge to enjoy it. That’s because Jack Rhysider is a brilliant storyteller. The long-form interview has become a staple in podcasting. Some of the most popular podcasts in the world feature what, on the surface, seems like a pretty simple format. However to do this well isn’t always simple and it’s important to find little ways to distinguish interview podcasts and the best podcast interviewers know how to do this. Over the course of 300 episodes and counting, Dan Cable Presents has made small tweaks to the production process that make these interviews stand out. Dan Cables Presents is hosted by Dan Cable, a musician living in Portland, Oregon. Each show features an interview with a musician, usually one from the Pacific Northwest. But rather than just record a long conversation with a guest, Dan intersperses bits of the artist’s music so the audience can hear the music for themselves. Show…Don’t tell. He joins the show to chat with Evo about how his show has evolved over the course of several years and 300 plus episodes. LEARN MORE ABOUT CASTOS 3 Clips is a Castos Original Series. It’s almost a meme at this point. A group of friends sitting around riffing say “this should be a podcast!.” Often those podcasts don’t work because they lack structure and a clear direction. Dirt Cheap is NOT one of those podcasts. It’s funny, edgy and off the cuff but still manages to keep a basic structure that makes for an easy, entertaining listen. Husband and wife duo, Amanda Meadows and Geoffrey Golden teamed up with production studio Neon Hum to bring us this unique podcast. The premise is actually pretty simple. Geoffrey reads from a dime store novel called “Murder in the Glass Room” a baffling noir novel from the 1940’s, while Amanda reacts in real time (with plenty of commentary and bantering between the two hosts.) The result is a 22 episode story arc that will leave you laughing. The pair chat with Evo about the importance of structure within a show, how they take they goofiness seriously, and in general, their creative process for making Dirt Cheap. All podcasts, regardless of their format, are a creative endeavor. But some podcasts are just more complex. Enter, Bellwether, the latest offering from award winning podcast and radio producer, Sam Greenspan. Sam is the founding producer of 99 Percent Invisible and has a number of impressive credits to their name. The City from USA Today, the TED Radio Hour at NPR and Radiotopia’s Spacebridge to name a few. They’ve also lectured and taught radio and podcasting around the world. In November of 2021, Sam was hired as a Senior Producer at Vice Audio. So when Bellwether was released, the podcasting world took notice. Bellwether was a five year effort from one of the most brilliant minds in podcasting. This five episode narrative weaves together both real world reporting (stories Sam personally covered) and a fictitious Sci-Fi story arc. Here’s a common story. The 2020 pandemic come along and it seriously altered someone’s plans. Here’s a less common story. A theater actor and producer can’t put on live shows any longer so she teams up with a playwright to create a one of a kind podcast experience. Well, that’s exactly what Jocelyn Kuritsky did. The result? A Simple Herstory A Simple Herstory is described as a “a theatrical and high concept podcast series about the women who have run for President of the United States.” And it is quite theatrical indeed. 23 different actors (all women, by the way) connected via clean feed to create this comedy infused piece of audio drama based on real events. Jocelyn produced the podcast through her company, The Muse Project and for this episode of 3 Clips, she joined Evo to discuss what it’s like to bring in an existing creative skillset into a different medium. For connoisseurs of podcasts Avery Trufelman shouldn’t need much of an introduction. She’s worked on popular shows like 99% Invisible and it’s successful spinoff, Articles of Interest. More recently she teamed up with Vox and Curbed to create Nice Try! In season one of this investigative series, Avery explored failed attempts at creating Utopias. For season two titled Interior she turned her attention to the home. Each episode dissects the history and the stories of household appliances and the role they play in our attempt to turn our homes into our own little fiefdoms. It took Michael Trapani six years to make How to Start a War. From meticulous research, immersive sound design, impeccable narration and poignant story writing, Michael masterfully leveraged the audio medium for this series. How to Start a War is a podcast about WW2. Most of us know how that story ended and that the Nazis lost. But the details of how it started, like the granular details, the conversations, the lies, betrayals…those aren’t as well known. Michael recreates this story from the point of view from the Nazis (with the clear stipulation that they are on the shortlist for the worst people who ever lived.) Using transcripts he re-enacts conversations. With sound design he creates atmosphere. And with narration, he guides us through a complex story that as it turns out, is quite poignant in our current time. LEARN MORE ABOUT CASTOS 3 Clips is a Castos Original Series. Radio theatre is defined as a dramatized performance — no visual, only dialogue and sounds to manifest images in the listeners’ minds, resulting in a uniquely psychological experience. This mode of storytelling began in the 1920s, flourishing by the 1940s, then evolving in the 21st century in the form of podcasts. And while Jude Brewer’s podcast Storybound falls into the category of radio theatre, it doesn’t quite sound like the rest of them. Inside today's episode, Jay and Jude discuss the collaboration between voice and music. Over the past four seasons, Storybound listeners have been treated to their favorite authors reading some of their most powerful writing, designed with immersive sound environments and experimental cross-genre music compositions handcrafted and arranged by creator and host Jude Brewer. Jude is a writer, actor, and musician. He’s also the editor and sound designer for his own show Storybound. Most recently, Jude won First Place in the KCRW Radio Race, for which his piece “BUZZY” received critical acclaim. A camera. A cancer diagnosis. True love. Romantic comedy. Award-winning writer and storyteller Brianna Barrett has performed her show about serious illness and resilience to audiences along the west coast since 2016. Now Brianna reimagines the experience of her one-woman play in audio form, navigating the threads of her life that continue to come together in surprising and unusual ways, even amid a global pandemic. Welcome to Brianna Barrett’s semi-limited series: True Love & Other Noncommunicable Diseases, a podcast that manages to carve out a sharp narrative niche, elevating “coming of age” by swapping tragedy for comedy, and vice versa, in a heartbreakingly awkward and hilarious study of narrator-versus-performer, and the memory of self. Inside today's episode, as timely as ever, Jay and Brianna break down the meta-meta and the nitty gritty of storytelling. What does “better now” mean for a cancer survivor? And what would your ex say if you told them that you had written a play about your past relationship and then performed it on stage for thousands of strangers over the past several years? And by the way. You’re going to read that play aloud to them. Alone. While recording their reaction. Brianna Barrett is a playwright, storyteller, obscure history buff, and avid tea-lover. Her full-length theatrical work has been developed at Artists Repertory Theater, Theatre33, Fertile Ground Festival, HART Theatre, and UCLA. Her TV work has been developed with Stuber, Farah Films, Hollywood Laundromat and ICM. The World needs more sensitive creators. Content that moves the world, moves listeners and make things better. And you know what? That doesn’t have to come in the form of some epic narrative. It can be stories from daily life. The seemingly innocuous details of our day-to-day can provide inspiration. Enter Ian Coss. For this episode he and Jay break down his five part series, Forever is a Long Time. Ian explores the topic of marriage by interviewing members of his family who are divorced, which is most of them. These candid and poignant conversation with his relatives are both deeply personal and relatable at the same time. Ian is an award winning musician, podcaster and sound designer who has worked with well known outlets like PRX, and the nationally syndicated radio show, The World. He’s been recognized with a national Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in sound and his music is even featured in museums. We’re hard at work on new episodes of 3 Clips, so here’s an oldie but a goodie — one of our most popular episodes… We've got a dynamic co-hosting duo: welcome Ashley Hamer and Cody Gough of Curiosity Daily. A daily, yes, daily (!), podcast about science, which is part of Discovery. Host Jay Acunzo gets into great topics with Cody and Ashley, starting with, how, just how do they put out a well researched and fact-checked show every single day? This episode also covers topics of performing on the mic, how these two make a co-hosting relationship work, how to communicate science to a general audience, and more. And to that last topic, being a science communicator to a wide audience, Ashley had a great thought to add after we recorded, so hang out past all the credits and even past the closing theme music to hear what she had to say. 3 Clips is a show about the craft of podcasting, and the passion behind that craft. But how do we translate that passion into income? On this special episode, business partners Kinsey Grant and Josh Kaplan help us answer this question. Kinsey is the host of Thinking is Cool, where she takes listeners deep into the key topics affecting their work and lives, to encourage us all to stop and think more critically about the nuances inside those ideas. She covers topics like drugs and why we do them, billionaires and whether they should exist, the concept of the girl boss, and the political system in the US and how we might fix it. Kinsey is also the Chief Content Officer of the startup that she co-founded, Smooth Operations and Creator Services, aka Smooth Ops. Josh Kaplan is the co-founder of Thinking is Cool and co-founder and CEO of Smooth Ops. He runs the business back end for Thinking is Cool, and works on revenue generating projects for independent creators, many of whom are podcasters too. In this episode of 3 Clips, Josh, Kinsey and Jay talk working relationships, going indie, the role of a journalist/host in podcast advertising, and more. When’s the last time you attended an audio-only house party populated entirely by personified versions of fonts? Actual typefaces like Arial and Times New Roman speaking at you like real life people? Imagine how obnoxious Comic Sans sounds… Welcome to the ambitious world of Wireframe, a podcast from Adobe and Pacific Content. Inside today’s episode, Jay speaks with Khoi Vinh and Dominic Girard, two of the three hosts of Wireframe, a show with a unique eye toward helping design professionals and the design-curious, fostering a new appreciation for the craft while demonstrating how design impacts the world around you. Khoi and Dominic breakdown the nitty-gritty with Jay, ranging from logistics between hosts and the brandteam, what it means to be a podcast host versus a public speaker, and tricks for transforming show guests into actors. Wireframe is not a show that’s afraid to reach. Khoi Vinh, named one of the most creative people in business by Fast Company, is Senior Director of Product Design at Adobe. His co-host Dominic Girard is a showrunner from Pacific Content, a podcast production company which helps make Wireframe as well as shows from some of the world’s top brands like Dell, Charles Schwab, Atlassean, and Facebook. In 2021, we're blessed to live in a podcast landscape ripe with richly reported nonfiction shows that challenge your way of thinking and expand your world: Reply All, Invisibilia, Far Flung, the list goes on. There is also an expanding slate of fictional podcasts to get lost in. But what if you could have both in one show? With Flash Forward, a show about the future, our guest Rose Eveleth inspires imaginations and pushes listeners to think about the world we live in now, and how it could be different. Like other science shows, Rose calls on scientists and other experts to break down complex concepts in an accessible way. But sprinkled throughout each episode are speculative fiction scenes that offer a glimpse of “possible and not so possible futures.” In this episode of 3 Clips, Rose and Jay break down a Flash Forward episode about humans' search for alien life. They discuss how to make scientists sound podcast-worthy, how Rose has carved out her own voice in the science genre, and her fiction writing process. Also, Rose offers insights on how she's managed to make such a multilayered show as an independent producer. EXPLORE THE SHOW 3clipspodcast.com for all episodes of the show. Amy Westervelt is a print and audio journalist and environmentalist; she founded the podcast network Critical Frequency, which raises up important but often overlooked voices; and she is the executive producer and host of the critically acclaimed show Drilled. The through line here is that Amy has an enduring interest in telling stories that are getting covered up, and doing the hard work of figuring out what’s really going on. Jay and Amy discuss the rigorous and thorough process involved in creating a show like Drilled, which focuses on stories that investigate propaganda in the fossil fuel industry. SHOW NOTES: Louis Grenier is a marketing consultant whose stated mission is to “fight marketing bullshit,” which he does with his company Everyone Hates Marketers, and a podcast by the same name. After three years and 200 interview-style podcast episodes, Louis realized he was forgetting who his guests were even five episodes ago. So in March 2021, he decided to refresh himself, and his show. New episodes are shorter, in monologue format, and focus around one marketing lesson, rather than on a guest. In these episodes, Grenier re-packages clips from his past interview episodes and cites examples from books and other sources. It really works for the listener, even if you never heard the original interviews. And it's working for Louis, as a way to showcase his own marketing know-how. Among other topics, Louis and Jay discuss developing a personal brand and host persona, and how to make your podcast stand out in a crowded field. Travel writer Rolf Potts' podcast, Deviate, is usually an interview show with other writers, travelers and filmmakers reflecting on their experiences and sometimes waxing philosophical. Usually, because, true to its name, some episodes of Deviate stray from both topic and format. Alternative formats have included narrative, essay, chatcast, and the one we feature here: an episode about a 20+ mile walk, with all audio recorded while on that walk. Jay and Rolf discuss the value in exercising different creative muscles, even if it costs you some downloads. Also, the art of capturing a story in the moment without much pre-planned structure, the magic dust of chemistry between people on a podcast, and how Rolf has stayed true to his show's premise, even when he deviates from the topic of travel. SHOW NOTES: The first time we had veteran producer, host, and production company founder/CEO Juleyka Lantigua-Williams on the show was in November 2020. Back then, Jay spoke with Juleyka about developing her company and the show she hosts, How to Talk to [Mamí & Papí] About Anything – a podcast that helps adult children of immigrant parents broach difficult topics with their families. Debbie Millman started her interview show about design as a radio program to fulfill her need to explore her own creativity. That was 16 years ago, and Design Matters has been in production every since: it’s the world’s first podcast about design. Debbie has welcomed over 500 guests to her now wildly popular podcast to explore creative culture and how some of the most influential thinkers, artists, musicians, writers, and designers create their work, career, and life. In this interview, host Jay Acunzo and Debbie discuss how she got started as a host, what’s kept her going, and why her research documents for each and every guest can be as long as 70 pages. Every so often we come across a show so refreshing, so original, it revamps our whole idea of what a podcast can be. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Atlanta-based sound designer Kacie Willis made her living from live theater. In 2020, Kacie found herself stuck at home without any gigs – and, like many of us, watching people hide behind screen names to attack each other on the internet. So Kacie created You Heard Me Write, a podcast that draws on the creativity of local writers and sound artists, and uses anonymity to unite rather than divide. The show uses a very specific episode structure, and we promise you haven't heard anything like it before. In the interview, Kacie also discusses working with Spotify, and how she- a self-described introvert- developed her hosting persona. It's a hard truth about interview shows: if the guest doesn't deliver, it's not their fault. Instead, it's the host's responsibility to walk away with an insightful, informative, and engaging recording. In this episode, 3 Clips host Jay Acunzo talks with Jay Clouse, a podcaster who does an exemplary job of setting his guests up for success; by drawing on research, past experience, voice over, and a little bit of sound design. This episode features Jenna Spinelle, co-host and lead interviewer for the show Democracy Works. Produced by the McCourtney Institute for Democracy at Penn State and WPSU Penn State, this show seeks to answer questions about what it means to live in a democracy: they get into the structure and history behind this foundational framework. Jenna shares her experiences and insights into bringing dense academic materials and conversations to life for an audience that includes academics and nonacademics alike. Her co-hosts are academics as are many of her guests. Her role, as she sees it, is largely about being a bridge builder between the academy and the general public. Along the way, she helps others cross this divide as well. This is an excellent episode for any creative who aims to bring complicated ideas to a wider audience. When you host a podcast, your voice becomes a creative tool. Perhaps for the first time, you're challenged to think about your words as something you wield, something you can strategically deploy to create meaning and inspire action in others. Your voice is just like any other medium (text, imagery, video, or audio). You can learn how to use it better. That may seem like a new idea. But here's something that isn't new to any of us: Writing. Writing is the engine that drives your voice, the direction you're giving to yourself, and the shape you give to your thoughts. You know how to write, which means you know how to use your voice as a more powerful creative tool. Few hosts on the planet are better at this than George the Poet, the spoken word artist and former rapper who now hosts Have You Heard George's Podcast? In this episode of 3 Clips, host Jay Acunzo breaks down the subtle but powerful pieces of George's performance (in the first-ever episode of HYHGP) — and we find several ways of using our own writing better to then use our own voices better. For this special episode, Jay invited Rebecca Sananes, lead producer for Pivot, with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway, as well as 3 Clips producer Cherie Turner, to get on the mic and talk about what they do. You'll get an insightful behind-the-scenes look from the people who influence and shape shows—very big and less big—in ways that are not obvious to the outside world (and that's largely the goal). Where the hosts are the front-facing personality, the producers help shape the show in ways both large and small, off the mic (mostly). This special episode explores sound design and music composition with guests Sam Riddell and Joel Roston. Among many other projects and roles, Sam is the sound designer of In Those Genes (and she was featured with that show's host, Dr. Janina Jeff, in a previous 3 Clips episode). Joel is a musician and composer who creates music for podcasts, film, and video. He's co-owner of Titlecard Music & Sound, a music library and custom composition company for creators. In this episode, Sam and Joel break down clips of their own work, as well as a clip from host Jay. Sound design and music are powerful tools, but challenging for many podcasters. Sam and Joel discuss how to start doing this work on your own as well as how to work with professionals like themselves to get the results you're after. When marketing experts and buddies Allen Gannett and Shane Snow decided to do a show together, they looked out over the podcast landscape and saw a wasteland of sameness – sooo many interview shows with business leaders and authors about how they achieved success. So after some research, they decided to serve their market in a different way: they made Creative Hotline, a call-in advice show about creativity. In this episode of 3 Clips, Jay talks with co-host Allen Gannett about the big and small decisions that go into making this unique show, from pitching to a network to writing a Drake trivia quiz. Plus: relatability, playing character, “performer voice,” and more. EXPLORE THE SHOW Visit http://3clipspodcast.com for all episodes of the show. Jay welcomes guest Joe Pulizzi to the podcast this week to talk about his short-form, monologue podcast, Content Inc. Joe reveals that this show began as a promotional tool for his book by the same name (the 2nd edition releases May 2021). It has continued as a place where he can share information he's learned in his over 20 years in marketing, content creation, and entrepreneurship. The show now supports the thinking behind his new business, The Tilt. In this episode, Jay and Joe discuss how to stay natural on the mic, when it's just you and a mic; the importance of finding your niche; and how having a point of view helps build a connection to your audience. They also get into a bit of what Joe writes and teaches people about: how to be creators who are also entrepreneurs, or what Joe calls, content entrepreneurs. For this special episode, we narrow down on a foundation skill for podcasters: interviewing. Jay brings back guest Kristen LaFrance, who was featured on 3 Clips December 2020 to break the interview show she hosts and creates for Spopify, Resilient Retail. We love how much passion Kristen has for studying the art of interviewing as she looks to continually improve her own skills, so we asked her back to share her insights. Jay and Kristen each share three clips from interviewers they admire and break them down (so, uh, welcome to the first episode of 6 Clips? Haha, we kid!). They discuss creating a good interview tone or environment, the importance of doing research, the necessity of follow-up questions, respectfully creating tension with your guest, asking the questions your listener would ask, and so much more! Today’s featured podcast, The Secret Adventures of Black People, has a beautiful premise: that the everyday lives of Black people are extraordinary. But extracting and telling everyday stories in a way that sounds extraordinary takes intention, skill, and practice. Host and producer Nichole Hill’s storytelling style combines elements of fantasy, voyeurism, and comedy to create a show that peeks inside intimate moments in Black lives, and leaves the listener wanting more. In this episode, Nichole and Jay discuss how to interview to draw out stories, creating for yourself, and being vulnerable on the mic. Plus, tips on navigating the agonizing process of naming a new show and the trial-and-error process of making something that matters. In this episode, we’re breaking down the great work that goes into the narrative podcast Bodies, with creator and host Allison Behringer. This is a highly produced and deeply researched show that leaves no details left unattended. This week: a listener mailbag. Host Jay Acunzo and producer Andrea Muraskin answer your questions, with a particular focus on narrative-style podcasting. Topics include resources for learning the craft, how to face down an edit, and how to research guests. Plus: is there a measurable benefit to making a narrative podcast as opposed to an interview show? Big thanks goes out to everyone who submitted questions. We're going to keep doing these, so send your questions on any aspect of podcasting to Jay on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jayacunzo/, or email jay@unthinkablemedia.com. On this episode we are so excited to feature podcasting superstar (or as we say on the show, superhero!) Kristen Meinzer. And we're breaking down By the Book—the hit show Kristen co-created and co-hosts with Joleta Greenberg—which is going into its eighth season! Kristen brings her wealth of knowledge as someone who's been in the industry for over a decade; who's hosted, produced, and created numerous shows; and who's written the must-read book for podcast creators: So You Want to Start a Podcast: Finding Your Voice, Telling Your Story, and Building a Community That Will Listen. Host Jay Acunzo and Kristen get into many key topics, like why structure is a must, ways to connect with your audience, how to deal with listener criticism, and why you should focus on your show's content instead of obsessing over your microphone—and more. This is a great one, featuring one of the best in the business; you won't want to miss it!
