Hello to you listening in Berlin, Germany!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (& a bit more) for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga. This lovely poem you're about to hear was written in Portugese by Ricardo Gondim Rodrigues, a Brazilian theologian and progressive pastor. I'm excited to announce that we've restarted the panel format. Many of you will remember that I used to put together monthly panels with experts on popular topics. The truth is that they can be tough to coordinate and take a lot more planning than regular interview episodes so I let them go while I focused on other projects, but thanks to help from some digital tools and popular requests from listeners, we're working to bring these episodes back on a monthly basis. So if you haven't heard previous panel episodes, I'll give you a quick recap. As part of my role building the Regen ag community in Europe with Climate Farmers, I'm always trying to facilitate access to good information from experienced practitioners in regenerative agriculture. Oftentimes I look to organize these panels around the common questions that come up in our community chats. In other cases I see a lack of clear and concise information around a topic of interest. Other times I hear people referencing the work of other practitioners around the world for opportunities and inspiration and I try to connect them with each other in the Q&A sessions. Another motivation for organizing these is to increase awareness of the practicalities that are behind the aspiration to great achievements in land management. I hope that all of you out there listening to these episodes leave after having heard these episodes feeling that the incredible accomplishments and projects of the people we highlight are achievable and replicable and that you can do things like this too. You may not personally identify with their particular contexts or want to mimic them or their work exactly, but I hope you might find a point of connection in their stories and their journeys. Every project starts as an idea or a dream or a feeling that is nurtured into its potential by the people and communities that have skin in the game and dedicate their time and efforts to co-create that potential. With that said I want to introduce the panel and our speakers for this episode. So today we'll be exploring the challenges and opportunities in mixed enterprise farming. By that I mean farms that sell and range of products, especially of different food categories such as cereals and cattle, or market garden and laying hens and agrotourism and farm tours. I was really lucky to get three farmers together from very different regions who are pioneering diverse enterprise farming on their land. Now it's not usually the case that the farmers I get to speak with are people I've met in person or farms that I've physically visited, but in this case I've been to and even ran some events and projects with each of the farmers who I'm speaking with. Maria Gimenez comes to us from Wilmers Gaerten just south of Berlin Germany. Francisco Alves comes from Herdade de Sao Luis, Porcus Natura in Alentejo Portugal, and Ariane Lotti joins us from Tenuta San Carlo near the Tuscan coast in Italy. They each give much better intros of themselves and their farms than I can so I'll let them do that, but before we jump into the panel, you should know that there's a video version of this panel that includes the Q&A session in this last half hour which I am clipping off here for the podcast version. You can find that on the Climate Farmers YT chanel and if you happen to be an active farmer anywhere in Europe, you can also join the Climate Farmers community for free and participate in the farmer to farmers learning platform that we've built by going to Climate Farmers.org The community is part of a non-profit dedicated to assisting farmers at all levels of their transition to regenerative management.

Freo Majer is the founder and artistic director of Forecast, an international mentorship program that transcends disciplines and geographical locations to connect cultural practitioners with renowned mentors. Trained as an opera director, Majer looks back at a career as a director and producer in European theaters, opera houses, and at festivals, including at Mainz State Theater, Lucerne Theater, Bremen Theater, and the international festival Theater der Welt. Driven by his own experience, and recognizing a gap in the type of support available to cultural works, he changed paths and founded Forecast in 2015. Together with curators and festival directors from various European cities, he initiated the interdisciplinary research project Housing the Human (2017–2019). In 2020, Majer began a three-year collaboration with the ZKM and HfG in Karlsruhe and the National Academy of Science and Engineering acatech, developing prototypes on the eco-social research program Driving the Human. The Matts are in Berlin, discovering all is not well in the powerhouse of Europe. Is the rise of the far right AfD party inevitable? And how is migration warping the political discourse? Also - Boris Johnson's worst lie yet? Could be. His mendacious outpouring about Trump's innocence over the insurrection is a signal of a dark ambition; a return to power alongside his mate in the White House. The Matts weigh up the evidence. Warning! Contains impressions. Enjoy!Subscribe to The New European today!: theneweuropean.co.uk/2matts Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
"The real challenge isn't just defining skills, but creating a system where hiring criteria and performance criteria align—where your hiring approach is integrated into your company's everyday operations."—Matthias SchmeisserSummary:In this episode of "Psych Tech @ Work," I am joined by Matthias Schmeisser, a talent acquisition leader from Berlin Germany who is passionate about skills based hiring. Much of our conversation is focused on sharing Matthias' experience on the path to transforming his company's talent acquisition approach by implementing a skill-based system that ensures alignment between hiring and performance criteria. Matthias highlights the importance of creating a skill-led organization, where every role is assessed and hired based on well-defined skills rather than previous experience or degrees. This episode is a must listen for anyone who is interested in executing a skills based hiring process in their organization.Topics Covered:* Skills-Based Hiring:* Moving away from resumes and focusing on validated, functional, and core skills.* Designing a skill-based career framework that integrates hiring and performance management* Bias Reduction in Hiring:* The pitfalls of "pedigree recruiting" and years of experience as a performance proxy.* How skill-based hiring helps reduce bias and increases the quality of talent.* The Role of Technology:* Leveraging tech tools to assess both functional and social skills while enhancing decision-making.* Using interview intelligence tools to improve interviewer training and ensure consistency in the assessment process.Takeaways:* Replace Resumes with Skills: Resumes introduce bias into the hiring process. Focus on specific, validated skills to make more objective hiring decisions.* Align Hiring and Performance Criteria: Create a consistent framework where the skills used in hiring are the same as those used to assess performance, ensuring seamless integration across the employee lifecycle.* Use Technology Thoughtfully: Tools like interview intelligence and skill assessments can help make the hiring process more efficient and less biased while providing meaningful data to inform decision-making.* Start Small: Implement skills-based hiring on a smaller scale before scaling up. Prove the model works by piloting it with key roles and using the results to drive broader adoption.Articles Discussed in the "Take it or Leave it" Segment:Matthias and I review two articles about tech and skills based hiring and share our takes.Article 1: Problems with “Botshit”- what does this mean for recruiting?* Summary: This article from Business Insider explores the frustrations caused by AI chatbots in customer service. Matthias and Charles discuss the limitations of bots in replicating human interaction and the importance of maintaining quality control when using AI in customer-facing roles.Article 2: The realities of connecting skills based hiring and education- new infrastructure is needed* Summary: A Forbes article discussing the disconnect between the education system and the workplace, particularly regarding how skills-based hiring may render traditional degrees less relevant. Matthias and Charles debate the need for both higher education and skills verification, particularly in highly specialized fields like medicine. This is a public episode. In the fast-paced world of digital publishing, a robust content management system (CMS) plays a pivotal role in shaping success. It can empower publishers not only to streamline workflows and distribute content effectively, but also to engage with and deliver on consumer needs. With an intuitive interface, seamless integration with digital channels and robust analytics, the right CMS can become the backbone of modern digital publishing; the wrong one can mean disrupted or inefficient workflows, poor content management and missed opportunities for audience engagement. This is the latest in our Media Briefs series of short, sharp sponsored episodes – just 10 to 15 minutes – with a senior executive from a vendor working with publishers to make their businesses better. In this episode we hear from John Rahim, Senior Consultant in Digital Publishing at digital publishing platform provider, Purple. Digital transformation is not a one-and-done process, as anyone who has ever worked in the publishing industry can attest. For Hamburger Morgenpost the digital journey has been made in a series of steps and investments - all with an eye on transforming a once print-centric newspaper business into a digital pioneer. Now, with AI on the horizon, it is set to take another leap into the future of digital publishing by integrating artificial intelligence throughout its newsroom and processes. In this special Conversations episode we hear from Arist von Harpe, Publisher of Hamburger Morgenpost and Peter Dyllick-Brenzinger Head of Product and Engineering at digital publishing platform provider Purple, about how the venerable newspaper is futureproofing itself and potentially providing a template for other media businesses taking their own first steps along that journey. Arist and Peter tell us how MoPo went from a daily to a weekly newspaper while also embracing AI and digital technologies to reengineer their entire business model, and become, as Arist explains, "bigger than they are". Purple is a leading digital publishing platform for publishers, providing comprehensive solutions for modern publishing. Based in Berlin/Germany with an experienced team of 60 employees, Purple has been supporting publishers worldwide since 2007. Today, over 600 brands in 10 countries rely on Purple. "In this process our team in Italy invented a tool that would have taken 18 months in our traditional model. They did it in 2-3 months. It makes it easy for the patients to keep the two vials and the two syringes, hold them in a little tool that is produced by a 3D printing in the end. It's called froggy because it has a little bit the face of a frog." "The traditional way of management stems from industrial revolution, right? It was all about doing a process in steps and having people work in that process hand in hand so it always passes on, but you needed to define very precisely what each individual was contributing to." "Leadership is needed. Even though you say the decisions are made on the lowest possible level and that's the operating teams really. But you need leadership. You need less than before, but you need leadership." Take my High-Performance Leader Self Assessment for FREE. Connect with Nate on LinkedIn Summary Lars discusses the transformation in leadership style at Bayer, focusing on dynamic shared ownership and its impact on innovation and people. The traditional hierarchical decision-making process in large companies can be slow, so Bayer implemented a new operating model where decision-making sits with operational teams called front runner teams. These teams have more flexibility and autonomy, allowing for faster decision-making. Lars shares an example of a team in Italy that invented a tool to make injections easier for hemophiliac patients, which was brought to market in just two and a half to three months. This new approach challenges the traditional command and control leadership style and emphasizes the importance of outcomes, authenticity, and trust. Takeaways Bayer implemented dynamic shared ownership as a new operating model to speed up decision-making and innovation. Early in his career, Paul Stankard used to trade paperweights for gasoline and car servicing with John Graeber. In 1989, through his uncle John, David Graeber wound up casually visiting Stankard's studio and weeks later was invited to come and work with him. Young Graeber started learning about glass in the deep end of the pool. Thirty-five years later, he continues to work with Stankard about a day a week. Having mastered numerous glassmaking techniques and having developed his own working style and visual aesthetic, in 2009 Graeber started his own art glass business. One thing he shares with his mentor Stankard is a deep appreciation for and interest in imagery from the natural world. His paperweight subjects include Chysanthemum, so life-like you want to reach out and pluck them from their crystal orb. Fall Harvest, including pumpkins and blueberries in floral arrangements that celebrate their season with color and vibrancy. And Fruits of Discovery that pays homage to the enchanting yellow lemon trees of Italy. Graeber says: “My stories in glass have evolved over time. However, one fact, my love of nature, remains constant. Many of my creations celebrate the memory of a loved one or the joy of a special event. All capture nature's elegance and remarkable diversity.” In order to create paperweights that reflect nature precisely, Graeber studies his subject matter carefully. A major source of natural inspiration is the million-acre Pinelands National Reserve, which has served as a living laboratory. He is always trying to “find a new illusion,” a new way to express the transcendence he experiences in those environs. Despite his stunning and widely collected artworks, Graeber prefers to be regarded as a craftsman continuing the South Jersey glass tradition into the 21st century. A life-long “Jerseyman,” Graeber honed his craft under the watchful eye of teachers, mentors, and friends including: the late George Vail, who introduced him to the world of architectural reconstruction and forensic sculpture; William “Bill” Marlin, Ed.D., a dedicated teacher and established painter; Stankard, the internationally acclaimed glass artist who encouraged him to strike out on his own; and the late Ed Poore, a renowned master cutter whose skill has enhanced several of Graeber's paperweights. Graeber has created both a life and a living from the magic of glass. His intricate glass paperweights and impressive flameworking techniques are on display and can be accessed through the L H Selman website as well as Graeber's own website. He is careful to always keep in mind how much more there is to know and that you always need to be learning something new to expand your horizons as an artist. He is restless and often makes no more than a few paperweights of a particular design before he needs to explore another direction. Two years ago, Graeber met filmmaker Dan Collins at an event, and the two decided a documentary film was needed focusing on the paperweights and artistic contributions of Stankard. Graeber took on the role of executive director and began fundraising for the project in earnest. Since January, Flower and Flame has thrilled hundreds of viewers at packed regional venues, including the Morris Museum, Perkins Center for the Arts and Salem Community College's International Flameworking Conference. The next showing will be at the Paperweight Collectors Association convention May 15 – 18 at the Warwick Hotel in Providence, Rhode Island. Plans for national distribution are ongoing and will be updated on the film's official website as they develop. The film is an official selection of the G.A.S. Film Festival in Berlin, Germany (May 16, 2024), and the Jersey Shore Film Festival (June/July, 2024). Considering art to be a vehicle for sharing and giving back, Graeber started a glass program five years ago at the nonprofit Perkins Center for the Crafts in Collingswood, New Jersey. There, he recently organized a showing of Flower and Flameto raise money for veterans – a group to whom the artist is particularly interested in teaching glass. Graeber has also given his time and energy to the nonprofit Project Fire, located on Chicago's West Side, and helmed by glass artist Pearl Dick. He states: “I have a passion for the simple gifts of nature: the timeless beauty of a rose, the industriousness of a small bee, or the untamed wildness of a sunflower. Working in glass allows me to explore this passion, and under the tutelage of master glass artist, Paul Stankard, I refined my passion to the art of capturing nature – frozen for eternity in a paperweight.” More about Flower and Flame 1. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, a new counter-culture emerged as the city came together to form a new identity. That cultural shift inspired the birth of Berghain, an iconic but ultra-private techno hotspot and sex club. Berghain ushered in a new era of hedonism, excess, and freeing secrecy that gave the city's queer community a space to release their inhibitions and establish Berlin's place as a party capital.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
