As we close the book on 2020, Tex and Cal take a closer look at two of the health topics commonly at the centre of New Year's Resolutions - improving our physical fitness and quitting smoking. Movement coach Ian Blamey returns to the show to discuss setting goals and managing expectations when it comes to physical fitness as well as digging a bit deeper to think about the concepts of motivation and commitment. Later in the show Cal and Tex are joined by Dr Sarah White from Quit to discuss some of the strategies for quitting smoking, including considerations for our LGBTIQ communities. Time to PrEP? New guidelines are set to make getting HIV prevention drugs easier than ever. In the fight to end HIV transmissions, the new tool on the block is pre-exposure prophylaxis. PrEP is an effective way at preventing HIV - yet barriers to folks accessing the drugs abound. However, The new ASHM guidelines for prescribing PrEP medication are aiming to remove barriers and make prescribing it more clear cut. This week, Michael and Tex chat with Dr. Darren Russell, a Cairns sexual health clinician and Clinical Advisor for the Australasian Society for Sexual Health Medicine (ASHM). This week Cal talks to Renee & Tina Dixson, conveners of Queer Displacements: Sexuality, Migration & Exile. The upcoming conference is the first of its kind in Australia as it looks at LGBTIQ people seeking asylum and refugees on 14-15 November at Australian National University in Canberra. Renee & Tina talk through how the conference has come about, the Queer Sisterhood Project, and the unique challenges faced by LGBTIQ people seeking asylum. Northside Bizarre is upon us! The much-loved Northside Bizarre has been called 'a mini-Folsom Street party fundraiser' for two of Melbourne's biggest LGBTI community organisations - JOY 94.9 and Thorne Harbour (FKA VAC)'s David Williams Fund. Hosted by The Laird, the event has expanded over the years to take over the neighbouring Collingwood Masonic Hall and the section of Henry Street that runs between the two iconic venues. This all-day event sees over 1500+ attendees come through and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. The event offers an opportunity outside of the typically summer festival season for the LGBTI community to come together while also supporting two of the largest organisations serving the local gender, sex, and sexually diverse community – JOY 94.9 and Thorne Harbour.
