The Trump administration scrapped a civil rights agreement 14 years in the making with the Rapid City, S.D. school system. The agreement was aimed at correcting inequities for Native American students. Data show Native students in the district are given harsher punishments than their white counterparts. The students also are less likely to be in higher level classes. The decision comes as President Donald Trump has terminated nearly half of the federal Education Department's Office for Civil Rights staff. We'll also look at a Virginia tribe's suit against the commonwealth for what the tribe says is withholding Medicaid reimbursements for tribal citizens' health care. Want to heal the world? Start by healing yourself first.   For this Women of Color Rise episode, Analiza talks with Sarah White, Oglala Lakota and Executive Director of the South Dakota Education Equity Coalition (SDEEC) and 2019 Bush Fellow.    Raised to value spirituality and education, Sarah saw how the system was failing her people with indigenous people falling further behind in the achievement gap. She decided to found SDEEC, a grassroots movement of community stakeholders committed to promoting diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning for future generations.    After years of working, Sarah noticed that her response to coping with trauma was achievement to give her a sense of self-worth. She realized that if she wanted to heal her community and world, she needed to start by heal herself.   Sarah shares strategies to heal: Develop awareness of where we find your self-worth. For Sarah, she realized that she had been seeking worthiness through achievement. She believed that achieving would lead to wellness and being happy. This pattern of thinking set her up on a never ending cycle of looking outward instead of inward. Notice that when we focus on outward success, we are the furthest away from ourselves. When we are on the hamster wheel of striving for outward achievement, we lose sight of our own belief in ourselves, that we are enough as we are. We can come back to ourselves to heal. This includes self-care, even basic things like not skipping meals and drinking water. Let go of martyrdom. Sarah shares that women generally more often than men suffer and martyr ourselves, falsely believing that it's going to contribute to some sort of prosperity. But that's never going to be sustainable. The key is to nurture our spirits, focus on healing, and recognize that this is going to be synonymous with the healing that we need to see within our professional work as well.   Get full show notes and more information here: https://analizawolf.com/ep-67-heal-the-world-by-healing-yourself-with-sarah-white

On this podcast, we have covered book banning and education censorship a few times before, but the way we see it, bans and revisionist histories thrive in our silence. Despite the recent attention surrounding the onslaught of CRT bans, the suppression of certain histories isn't new. Indigenous history and Indigenous issues have long been underreported and even erased, sidelining Indigenous folks and their experiences from the national conversation. This is one of the most active mechanisms of oppression of Indigenous Americans — erasure — erasure of history, culture, and language. Make no mistake, CRT bans are just the latest euphemisms — and violent tools — for cultural genocide. This story is playing out across the country, especially in South Dakota where the governor and state legislature of South Dakota have introduced multiple bills over the last two years aiming to dramatically dilute Indigenous history and culture in the school curriculum. Today, we will be hearing from Wyatt Hunter, a recent high school graduate from South Dakota and Sarah White, Founder & Executive Director of the South Dakota Education Equity Coalition (SDEEC), about the fight for Indigenous education in South Dakota.

This week, we're discussing another home-state legend. In 1899, (or 1901, depending on which source you reference), Dr. John and Jessie Gibbons purchased the house from the original owners, Dr. George and Sarah White. Dr. John and Jessie Gibbons reportedly adopted abandoned/orphaned children. One of these children, a 10-year-old girl named Rachael, started a fire in the front parlor, being badly burned, and died two days later in one of the upstairs bedrooms. But, according to tales told all around the country, you can still hear, and sometimes see, her running around the house today… Campfire: Tales of the Strange and Unsettling is created for adult audiences only. The content and discussion in this show will necessarily engage with various accounts that include violence, anxiety, fear, and occasional body horror. Much of it will be emotionally and intellectually challenging to engage with. We will flag especially graphic or intense content so as to never put you in an uninformed or unprepared position. We will do our best to make this a space where we can engage bravely, empathetically, and thoughtfully with difficult content every week.  This week's episode includes descriptions/sound related the following sensitive subjects.  High-Stress SituationsChild DeathDeath by BurningTerminal IllnessSuffocationDemonic Entities Check it Out! Mothmen 1966https://store.steampowered.com/app/1755030/Mothmen_1966/ Bigfoothttps://www.bigfootplay.com/ Articles: https://www.bumpinthenight.net/night-at-whispers-estate https://maps.roadtrippers.com/us/mitchell-in/attractions/whispers-estate https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6587200/ Adverts! Support Campfire on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/campfiretalesofthestrangeandunsettling Satisfy All of Your Merch Needs:https://www.teepublic.com/stores/campfire-tales-of-the-strange-and-unsettling?ref_id=25702 Join the conversation on social media atwww.campfirepodcastnetwork.com  Discord: https://discord.gg/43CPN3rz Instagram:instagram.com/campfire.tales.podcast GoodPods:https://goodpods.app.link/T0qvGnXnplb Twitter:www.twitter.com/campfiretotsau  Facebook:www.facebook.com/campfire.tales.podcast Visit Our Linktree for Any and All Campfire Info:https://linktr.ee/Campfirepodcast Special Thanks: Gregg Martin for music contributions! St David 900: 4 - Heresy

Delyth Liddell follows in St David's footsteps to Glastonbury, one of the most spiritually diverse places in Britain, and a community which David is said to have founded in the sixth century. David famously preached against heresy (the heresy of Pelagianism), so what what would he have made of a community that these days is home to 78 different spiritualities... and what would they have made of him? Delyth visits the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, accompanied by an Anglo-Saxon guide - Edgar the Anglo-Saxon - and in the beautiful surviving chapel of St Patrick speaks to the vicar of Glastonbury, Prebendary David McKeogh. That the once magnificent abbey now stands in ruins is a vivid demonstration of what happens when one orthodoxy is replaced by another, as the Reformation made heretics of former loyal Catholics, and dismissed the wonders of saintly cults such as the cult of St David. Dr Sarah White explains the nature of heresy past and present. Nowadays, Glastonbury is a more tolerant, inclusive society - Delyth visits not only a Catholic shrine but also a pagan healing centre. Far from condemning modern pagans, many mainstream Christian denominations in the town are prepared to work alongside people who hold quite different views to their own - vicar David McGeogh recalls fondly the occasion when he organised a funeral for an artist, and elves, pixies and druids all joined in to say the Lord's Prayer. As Methodist minister Tina Swire explains, 'Glastonbury is a place of seekers... and we are all seeking something'.
