JOY 94.9 - LGBTIQA+ Podcasts from Australia

Emil Canita, an artist and advocate from Living Positive Victoria, joins Jack and Jake to discuss the intersection of creativity and health. Many queer people living with HIV carry the weight of historical trauma, yet Australia’s epidemic has seen remarkably low mortality rates compared to global contexts. The exhibition You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) at Collingwood Yards seeks to bridge the gap between art history and HIV advocacy, celebrating the resilience of the community while addressing the unique barriers faced by migrants and people of colour. But how can we use art to reclaim the narrative around disclosure, challenge outdated criminalization laws, and honor the elders we lost during the AIDS crisis? We speak about the “emotional scaffolding” needed for HIV disclosure, the shift in the epidemic toward overseas-born communities, and why being told someone’s HIV status is a gift. You’ll also hear about the Let Them Know guide, the HIV Still Matters campaign, and Emil’s upcoming work exploring sex work and HIV. A growing body of research shows that lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and other sexuality and gender-diverse (LGBTQ+) people experience disproportionately high levels of sexual violence. However, there is limited understanding of the characteristics and contexts of those who use sexual violence against LGBTQ+ individuals. Crossing Lines from the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health, and Society (or ARCSHS) will investigate unwanted sexual behaviours against LGBTQ+ people, aiming to generate actionable knowledge to improve responses to such violence. It focuses on the social forces, risk factors, and characteristics of those who use sexual violence. ARCSHS will conduct interviews with victim-survivors, those who use violence, and service providers to develop resources that better support victim-survivors and enhance interventions for those who use violence. Learn more about Crossing Lines here, and if you have used violence in the past and are comfortable sharing your story, contact ARCSHS at 03 9479 8700 or arcshs@latrobe.edu.au Check out our other JOY Podcasts for more on LGBTIQ+ health and wellbeing at joy.org.au/wellwellwell. Jordan and Rachel speak with queer sexologist Kendall Buckley about how to navigate sex and relationships. As this is Women's Health Week, we also look at some of the issues that affect LGBTIQ+ women in particular and how we can better advocate for our pleasure. We dive into the myths about polyamory, non-monogamy, or kink in LGBTIQ+ circles, and how Kendall's work challenges heteronormative models of relationships and intimacy. Kendall Buckley is a sexologist and clinical nurse consultant who works exclusively with LGBTQIA+/FLINTA communities. Drawing on relational therapy and feminist theory, her evidence based person-centred practice specialises in queer sex, identity, relationships, neurodiversity and PMDD.
