Burton Rast shares his unconventional journey from punk rock kid in Chicago to design leader at Google and acclaimed photographer. Starting with pirated software on hotel computers, Burton built his first portfolio while working the night desk, teaching himself HTML, Flash, and Photoshop through stolen moments between guests. His story weaves through the dotcom era, agency burnout, and his transformative years at IDEO where he first experienced imposter syndrome among formally educated designers. The conversation takes a deeply personal turn as Burton reveals how the death of his closest friend in 2016 unconsciously transformed his photography from vibrant color work to the stark black-and-white aesthetic that would define his artistic identity. This realization came six years later while preparing a lecture, highlighting how grief can reshape creative expression in ways we don't immediately recognize.Burton discusses the evolution from "creating art" to "creating content," the ethical implications of AI training on artists' work, and his current role advising creative AI startups. The episode explores themes of addiction, obsession, creative authenticity, and the importance of personal narrative in an increasingly homogenized digital landscape.Key TakeawaysEmbrace the generalist identity - Having diverse skills across design, code, and photography creates unique career opportunities and perspectivesCreate without permission - The punk ethos of just doing it, learning through necessity, and not waiting for formal approval or educationChannel obsession productively - Replacing destructive addictions with creative obsessions can become a powerful force for building skills and career momentumYour trauma becomes your art - Personal hardships and loss often unconsciously shape artistic expression in profound and meaningful waysStories differentiate us - In a world of similar portfolios and AI-generated content, personal narrative becomes the ultimate differentiatorImposter syndrome hits when you level up - Feeling inadequate often signals you're in the right room with people who can teach youValue comes from effort - Things that require no effort (like AI-generated content) are inherently difficult to value personally and professionallyLanguage shapes perception - The shift from calling work "art" to "content" systematically devalues creative expression and should be resistedGrief changes creative output - Major life events can unconsciously alter artistic style and voice, sometimes creating signature workPay it forward - Success comes with responsibility to mentor and open doors for the next generation of creative professionals Mindful Creative: How to understand and deal with the highs and lows of creative life, career and business Paperback and Kindle > https://amzn.to/4biTwFcFree audiobook (with Audible trial) > https://geni.us/free-audiobookSigned books https://novemberuniverse.co.ukLux Coffee Co. https://luxcoffee.co.uk/ (Use: PODCAST for 15% off)November Universe https://novemberuniverse.co.uk (Use: PODCAST for 10% off)

Send us a textI'm so thrilled to welcome travel expert, host, and executive producer of Dream of Italy and Dream of Europe on PBS, Kathy McCabe.Kathy is so incredibly talented, and when you're watching one of her shows, you'd never know some of the trials and tribulations she's endured. I think this is such a beautiful example of never really knowing what someone is going through just based off of seeing them on social media or TV, or even in person. After unexpectedly losing both of her parents, she found herself on a journey of self-discovery and healing through her adventures across Italy.Reconnecting with her Italian heritage, building a successful career, and choosing a path that doesn't follow traditional societal norms for Gen X women of marriage or motherhood has been transformative for her. Now, she hopes to encourage others who may feel like they don't fit into these molds to find fulfillment in their own way.Today's conversation is all about embracing an unconventional path in life, and how travel helped her cope with the grief of losing both her parents.Kathy's perspective comes from her personal experiences and 22+ years of travel storytelling through her award-winning series, and we have a really beautiful and vulnerable conversation that I have no doubt you'll resonate with.Connect with Kathy:https://dreamofitaly.com/https://www.instagram.com/dreamofitaly/https://www.instagram.com/dreamofeuropetv/Discover and listen to the Taste Toast Travel Podcast, available wherever you get your podcasts and Youtube! https://tastetoasttravel.com/ Learn more about my 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Experience: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-griefWork with me: 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Challenge: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief Explore the membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further: Leave a voice note through Speakpipe! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGrief Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gains Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. Send us a textIn case you didn't already hear, I co-host another podcast called Taste Toast Travel with my husband, John, and I'm so excited to bring you an episode that bridges grief and travel in the most beautiful way. We're digging into healing through travel, and how the act of travel and exploration can help us grieve, heal, and transform.Needless to say, travel has become a transformative and healing experience in my own life, and it's something I feel is so beneficial for anyone grieving. In this episode we explore the dualities of using travel both as a way to process grief, and as a means of emotional escapism. You'll hear some practical advice as a griever considering travel, and we chat about the importance of choosing the right destination, pacing ourselves, and leaning into small moments of joy.We also dig into the therapeutic benefits of travel, how exploring new environments can help us reconnect with ourselves and the world around us, and how it offers a path to healing and personal growth. So, I hope you enjoy this episode as I much as I did creating it! Also, I hope you have the chance to check out the Taste Toast Travel Podcast, if you feel so inclined, because we have some really fun conversations over there. It's more than just losing material items. Things that, on paper, could be easily replaced. It's livelihoods, communities, schools, homes, sentimental items, and places of comfort that are gone within a matter of hours.Today is all about the importance of compassion, the need to acknowledge the depth of this tragedy, and understanding how grief like this runs so much deeper than we realize. How to support fire relief efforts:California Fire FoundationDirect ReliefRed Cross Fire ReliefWildfire Recovery FundLos Angeles Fire Department FoundationPasadena HumaneAmerican Red Cross: LA RegionLearn more about my 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Experience: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-griefWork with me: 14-Day Relief in Your Grief Challenge: https://lossesbecomegains.com/relief-in-grief Explore the membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further: Leave a voice note through Speakpipe! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGrief Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gains Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. Send us a textFrieds, I'm beyond honored and excited to share the story of Zachariah Thompson of The Scatter Joy Project with you today.Without giving away too much of his story, Zach's first experience with grief was when he lost his beloved uncle, Joe, when he was in 7th grade. That, and a very frightening health scare with his mom when he was 22.Aside from having countless commonalities and a really special bond with his uncle, Zach also inherited ARVC—a hereditary heart condition that would alter his life as he knew it.In this episode, Zach and I are digging into not only his profound story, but the dual nature of grief—grieving for lost versions of oneself, and this paradoxical grief of receiving a second chance at life. This, on top of losing dear loved ones as we both have.Zach elaborates on the emotional spectrum we can feel as we're grieving, ranging from anger and resentment to gratitude, all while emphasizing how these experiences have transformed his life into a profound purpose in his work within mental health with The Scatter Joy Project.I first became familiar with The Scatter Joy Project through Instagram, ended up sharing a bunch of their content because it's SO good, and from there I just knew I had to have Zach on with us.
