236: How to STOP CARING What People Think: Part 1

RISE podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 7, 2021 53:50

This the start of a new series called How to Stop Caring What People Think, and there's all sorts of thoughts that I have on this. Originally this was going to be a single episode. But then as I started writing all the ideas, and realized we're going to need to do multipart, because I feel like this breaks down into layers. There is this massive anxiety that exists around the opinions of others, and it doesn't really matter what age you are, or what culture. I think we have been taught that other people's opinion determines our worth. And I just think it's really important conversation to have because the world will give us 1,000,000 different things that we can do to try and fit in or to try and be liked or to try and get more likes. And that's not the solution. The solution is, can you find personal freedom in yourself to be yourself? Do you like the person that you are when you're all alone? That is that is freedom. That is the goal, I think, for all of us. I hope you enjoy Part 1 of this conversation! ------------------------------ Have you heard about the HOTLINE yet? Today on the show, I am sitting down with Deborah Tuerkheimer, a former prosecutor, legal expert and leading authority on sexual violence, to examine why we are primed to disbelieve allegations of sexual abuse and how we can transform a culture and a legal system structured to dismiss accusers. Look, it's a hard conversation to dig into abuse and abusers and the people that they hurt, but it's an important conversation to understand why culturally, we tend not to believe the people who are getting hurt the most in this conversation. We look at it from a bunch of different angles, and Deborah very graciously allows me to ask a lot of really ignorant questions so that I can better arm myself with information that we should all have. I hope that you will listen in and learn, as I did. ------------------------------ Have you heard about the HOTLINE yet? Call (737) 400-HOCO, and press 1 to leave a question for Rach. My mission for today's episode is to talk about the holidays. Guys, I want to talk about the holidays in my coaching community have this community of mostly women from all over the world who join me once a month. I teach on a different topic and I pose the topic to my community. So I say, Hey, guys, here's three things that are on my heart. What are you interested in learning about? I'm going into my second month of them choosing manifesting. It's a really popular topic here on the podcast and definitely in coaching. This month I was like, Well, I just got on it, but I have some more info, so I said, OK, I can do. Manifesting 2.0, I can do a conversation about how to overcome and rise above holiday stress, or I can do a conversation about overcoming, rising above handling the stress of the holidays, particularly if you're going to be interacting with people, family, friends, in-laws that can trigger you, that can sort of make the situation not great. And honestly, I think that this still ties in really beautifully with the idea of manifesting because, you know, I'm obsessed with the idea of manifesting the life of your dreams and manifesting a life that feels really good. And I think that there's a way to bring that intentionality into your holiday season. So that's what today's episode is about. And as usual, I have written down all kinds of crazy notes like a serial killer here in my notebook, and I'm just going to go through and kind of share some thoughts for you guys on things that I feel like have really helped me over the years in managing all of it, right? In hosting and traveling during the holidays and having kids and dealing with in-laws and going through holidays post-divorce and what that looks like. --- Have you heard about the HOTLINE yet? Amanda Rach Lee is an artist and digital content creator based in Toronto, Canada, who has built a successful career out of social media. It all began in 2013 at just 14 years old when she uploaded her first video to YouTube. Today, she has millions of subscribers and social media fans who enjoy her fun and quirky doodles, positive illustrations and updates on bullet journaling, as well as hand-lettering tutorials. If you've not heard of bullet journaling, it's a planning system created by Ryder Carroll which is meant to be an "evolving, adaptable practice meant to be self-curated as you determine what's best for you". This is certainly reflective of Amanda's own career path – one that she admits has been a massive learning curve, as she has had to wear so many different hats over the years and find ways to continue to grow. Luck has played a part, she admits, but it's clear that hard work has also helped. It's not all been fun and games: social media has an ugly side, too. We talk about internet trolls, dealing with negative comments and the impact on our mental health. But then we share lots of tips on coping with these things and seeing the positive in everything. And Amanda is indeed positive, as we share a few laughs on things like gaming, Animal Crossing and the absurdity of modern life. Given that being online is such a big part of our work life, I thought it would be fascinating to chat with Amanda and hear about her immense success, as well as her thoughts on changing algorithms, internet trolls and staying sane online. We also learn more about how she's carved a career out of content creation and illustration. I think this is especially helpful for anyone hoping to learn more about marketing and build their own online presence in what has become an increasingly competitive space.
