You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and today we are sharing an episode that we recorded a little while ago with Dr. Mariel Buqué about breaking cycles from our childhood. Let's get real. This can be a doozy and her book slays at teaching us how to do this. It's called Break the Cycle. It's a book that focuses on healing wounds of intergenerational trauma. We all come to adulthood with different things from our childhood that we might wanna pass on to our kids and carry forward, and some things that we don't wanna pass on or carry forward. She helps us navigate what this looks like in practice. She's brilliant and I'm so jazzed to share this episode again, and then get to share the breakdown afterward with Rach. Stay tuned for the breakdown at the end. All right, folks, let's dive in. It can feel frustrating (and confusing!) when your toddler suddenly starts refusing foods they used to love, especially when you've followed all the advice to raise an adventurous eater. In this episode, we're joined by paediatric occupational therapist Rachael Smith to explore the common (and completely normal) reasons for food refusal, as well as signs that it might be time to seek extra support. Whether your child is going through a phase or there's something deeper at play, this conversation is full of practical, compassionate advice to help bring more ease to your family's mealtimes. For those who don't know Rach, she is a mum to her daughter Olive and son Teddy, a Paediatric Occupational Therapist, and the owner of Therapy Time, a private practice based in Brisbane.Even before having her own family, she has always been passionate about taking a big picture approach to child development. Rach strongly believes that what we eat has a huge impact on everything and sees this everyday in her clinical practice (and at home). In this episode, we discuss:Why toddlers often start rejecting food around 12–18 monthsHow to tell the difference between typical fussy eating and a feeding difficultyWhat to do when your child suddenly stops liking a previously loved foodSigns your child may benefit from extra feeding supportHow to respond calmly to rejection without reinforcing itThe concept of food jagging and how to avoid itPractical strategies to get you through this stageWhat not to do ... and so much moreToday's episode was brought to you by Bio-First. Whether you're in the thick of starting solids or navigating toddler mealtimes, there's one behaviour that comes up again and again - food throwing. It's messy, frustrating, and often confusing… are they full? Bored? Just testing you?In today's episode, Luka and Kate are joined once again by our brilliant in-house occupational therapist Rachael Smith to talk all things food throwing - why it happens, when it's developmentally normal, and how to set boundaries without creating a power struggle at mealtimes. This episode is for you if your lovingly prepared meal regularly ends up airborne… or if you're just curious about how to make feeding your little one a little less chaotic! In this episode, we discuss:Why babies throw food (spoiler: it's not personal!)The difference between exploration and rejectionWhat food throwing can tell us about sensory needs, hunger, or emotional regulationHow to respond calmly and clearly without turning it into a gameStrategies for both babies and toddlersHow to support autonomy while still holding boundariesWhen food throwing might signal something else and where to seek support... and so much moreResources Mentioned in This Episode:Our Spoon, Fork & Talk conversation cardsEpisode on HighchairsOur books: Milk to Meals and Toddler to TableToday's episode is brought to you by Foraged For You.
