"Self-Made" success is now an American badge of honor that rewards individualist ambitions while it hammers against community obligations. Yet, four centuries ago, our foundational stories actually disparaged ambitious upstarts as dangerous and selfish threats to a healthy society. In Pamela Walker Laird's fascinating history of why and how storytellers forged this American myth, she reveals how the goals for self-improvement evolved from serving the community to supporting individualist dreams of wealth and esteem. Simplistic stories of self-made success and failure emerged that disregarded people's advantages and disadvantages and fostered inequality. Fortunately, Self-Made also recovers long-standing, alternative traditions of self-improvement to serve the common good. These challenges to the myth have offered inspiration, often coming, surprisingly, from Americans associated with self-made success, such as Benjamin Franklin, Frederick Douglass, and Horatio Alger. Here are real stories that show that no one lives – no one succeeds or fails – in a vacuum. Pamela Walker Laird is Professor Emerita of History at the University of Colorado Denver. Laird's publications include her newest book, Self-Made: The Stories that Forged an American Myth (Cambridge University Press, 2025); Pull: Networking and Success Since Benjamin Franklin (Harvard University Press, 2006), which won the 2006 Hagley Prize for the best book in business history and is available in Chinese; and Advertising Progress: American Business and the Rise of Consumer Marketing (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1998), a Choice Outstanding Academic Book. On today's episode, Laird breaks down the massive internal debate gripping the community: Has Sorare Colors actually surpassed Sorare Pro? But a secret ally is sending clues that could help Cecil solve the case, if Cecil can stop obsessing about his stapler long enough to figure it out. And if they don't get murdered by the real killer, of course. Then we dive into Pluribus episode 8, and go over all the new information about the Hive Mind that Carol's uncovered, and how tough it is to stay stubborn and distant when an ENTIRE PLANET is nerding out about your book. This episode's outro is a clip from Entering the Treeline by Visager.Clarification: yes St. Alia of the Knife is dune. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/05/binary-system-podcast-508-wtnv-288-doubles-anonymous-and-pluribus-episode-7/The investigation into the murder of Marcus Vanston is moving ahead at breakneck speed. And for this week only, Cecil's covering the latest developments in a hard-boiled, film noir style that only gets weirder (and more fun) when you add Night Vale's tendency to mess with metaphors (we WILL be trying to work "the hornet's fedora" into conversations from now on.)Episode 7 of Pluribus is less quirky and more beautiful, heartbreaking, and grim, as Carol and Manousos each choose their own methods for resisting the Hive Mind and getting on with their lives. Each and every day, the world is becoming more unpredictable, yet Australia continues with the post-Cold War status quo. As things continue to deteriorate, we're going to have to ask ourselves some particularly confronting questions. Australia and its allies are entering an "age of chaos" in which the assumptions that shaped the post-Cold War order are rapidly breaking down. Rather than dealing with isolated crises that can be managed and resolved individually, governments, militaries, and societies are now confronting overlapping and mutually reinforcing disruptions, including strategic competition, technological upheaval, economic fragmentation, supply chain vulnerability, and the rise of networked authoritarian powers. Central to Australia's response is understanding the distinction between traditional "crisis management" and "chaos management". Crisis management assumes stability will eventually return and institutions can revert to previous norms once a disruption passes. Chaos management, by contrast, accepts that instability, uncertainty, and persistent competition are now enduring features of the strategic environment. In this episode of the Contested Ground podcast, host Steve Kuper is joined by expert defence and security analyst and White House veteran Robbin Laird to discuss the impact of the emergence of the era of disruption. This only becomes more important and pivotal as we grapple with the reality that the international system is no longer defined by uncontested Western dominance, nor is it returning to a simple Cold War-style bipolar structure. Rather, the world is evolving into a fragmented and highly interconnected environment where economic dependency and geopolitical rivalry coexist simultaneously, particularly between the United States and China. This creates strategic complexity for middle powers such as Australia, whose decisions on defence, trade, industrial policy, and alliances will increasingly shape the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. Australia's response to this is recognising the growing importance of resilience and sovereign capability. The author argues that efficiency and globalisation can no longer be the sole priorities for democratic nations if they undermine strategic security. Supply chains, industrial capacity, digital infrastructure, and technological innovation are increasingly viewed as national security issues rather than purely economic considerations. In this context, adaptability, redundancy, and the ability to rapidly regenerate capability are presented as critical determinants of national power. Ultimately, democratic nations must rethink how they approach leadership, preparedness, and strategy in a world defined by accelerating disruption. Rather than attempting to restore an increasingly obsolete status quo, governments and institutions must develop the capacity to operate effectively amid prolonged uncertainty, while strengthening alliances, industrial resilience, and societal cohesion to navigate an increasingly contested global order. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/04/binary-system-podcast-504-pluribus-episode-6/We've really got to hand it to the creators of Pluribus. This episode took a dark turn; the Hive Mind may be the vanguard of an alien invasion that's either very efficient, or very much not efficient at all. Either way, steps have been taken to try to keep all seven point something billion hosts on the Earth from starving to death, and the reveal manages to avoid showing anything gory while still being really, really disturbing. You'd think that would be the only thing on Carol's mind, but let's face it, loneliness sucks. The Hive mind is currently not speaking to her, and the rest of the class has decided to not invite her to their gab sessions, which means the entire world doesn't want her around, and that shit stings.Listen in as we talk about gorgeous parties in Vegas and short-circuited storylines, with some digressions to discuss Spanish grammar and wonder how the heck you get FaceTime to let someone into a call? This episode's outro is a clip from Serenity by TeknoAXE.It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. The situation in Minnesota isn't in the news as much but they're still suffering, check out Stand With Minnesota for links to fundraisers and other ways you can show your support. In today's episode, Laird sits down with Harry Trades to tackle the elephant in the room: Is the "What If...?" question officially gone from Sorare? For years, the community has been fueled by a single hope: what if Sorare goes mainstream and our early cards become digital gold? Many managers are still holding onto collections that are worth a fraction of their peak prices, waiting for that one massive "explosion" in value. But as the platform evolves, the math is changing. We dive deep into why the "What If" era might be over, focusing on:• The In-Season Shift: How the transition to cash rewards and mandatory In-Season cards has effectively "devalued" the long-term utility of older collections.• The Sorare Set Paradox: We discuss the addition of non-tradable cards. If you can't sell them, is Sorare still a "collectible investment" or just a subscription-based fantasy game?• The Mainstream Reality: If Sorare finally hits the mass market, will it actually benefit the early adopters, or has the new game-play structure capped the potential upside of "Legacy" cards?• The Psychology of the Bag-Holder: Why so many managers find it impossible to let go of the "What If" dream, even when the data suggests otherwise.Has the game has moved from speculating on the future to performing in the present?Whether you're a whale from the early days or a new manager trying to navigate the 2026 landscape, this conversation is a reality check on the current state of digital football collectibles.Support the content by joining the Laird Social Club on Patreon: https://patreon.com/andrewmlaird⚽️ Become a Sorare manager today: https://sorare.pxf.io/WyLBnZ

We are back with Part 2 of our deep dive into the future of the platform! This week, Laird and @HarryTrades shift the focus toward the most controversial aspect of the Sorare 27 transition: the possible structural overhaul of the competitions we know and love.As Sorare moves toward a stricter separation between Leaderboards (PvP) and Hot Streaks (PvE), the community is bracing for more than just a UI update. We discuss the reality that some of your favorite "go-to" competitions might be changed, replaced, or removed entirely to make room for this new era of gameplay. In this episode, we cover:• The Competition Cull: Discussing which staple competitions are at risk and why Sorare is looking to "trim the fat" for the 2026/27 season.• The Strategic Split: The move to separate Leaderboards from Streaks—why you can no longer "double dip" with a single lineup.• Additive Rewards: How the new system incentivizes building deep galleries rather than focusing on a single top-tier squad.• Adapting or Exiting: How to pivot your strategy if your favorite niche competition faces significant changes...or elimination• Market Ripple Effects: What happens to card values when the "utility" of certain scarcities or leagues is fundamentally reshaped? The roadmap to Sorare 27 is becoming clearer, but it requires a total rethink of how we play the game. Today, Laird and Harry Trades dive deep into the latest Sorare survey and our early predictions for Sorare 27. Sorare is exploring a new dynamic: reward boosts for using higher scarcity cards in lower scarcity competitions. We discuss what this means for gallery utility and market values. In this episode, we break down:• Scarcity Reward Boosts: Is entering a Limited competition with Rare cards going to be the new meta? We analyze the potential "pay-to-win" vs. "utility-boost" balance.• Hot Streaks vs. Leaderboards: With J League, K League, and MLS leading the way in separate gameplay modes, will this split become the permanent standard for all of Sorare Pro?• The "Set" Influence: Sorare Set introduced levels, lives, and instant progression. Could these mobile-first mechanics—like "releasing" players mid-Game Week—actually make their way into the Pro ecosystem?• Market Strategy: How to prep your gallery now before these dynamics are officially confirmed.Whether you're a high-stakes Unique manager or a Limited grinder, these changes will redefine how we play.Join the Laird Social Club:Get exclusive data, strategy sheets, and Discord access by joining the Patreon: https://patreon.com/andrewmlaird#Sorare #Sorare27 #FantasyFootball #NFTGaming #SorareStrategy

Three Point Stance - A new Boston broadcast legend is born
Before everyone's favorite heroes in a half-shell wore brightly colored bandanas and ate pizza for every meal, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were black-and-white underground vigilantes. Eastman and Laird drew on a variety of influences to create something that starts with the energy of self-serious parody before transitioning into the violent yet goofy comic series that would ultimately launch a goofy (but still sort of violent) cartoon empire. This collection contains the first 8 published issues from 1984-85, which includes a Raphael one-shot that introduces hockey stick enthusiast Casey Jones. If you've built a life that looks great from the outside but still feels like something's missing on the inside, the problem might not be your relationship — it might be how much of yourself you're actually bringing to it. Whether it's a body image spiral that shuts you down in the bedroom, a long-term dynamic that's gone quietly cold, or a fear of vulnerability that's been running the show since day one, the shift almost always starts with one honest conversation. In this episode, volleyball legend, entrepreneur, and mother of three Gabby Reece gets real about what it actually takes to keep desire, respect, and intimacy alive after decades together — and why most of us are working harder than we need to. In this episode, you'll learn: • Why the masculine and feminine dynamic has been completely misunderstood — and how redefining it can transform your relationship and your sex life • What Gabby and Laird's 48-hour rule actually looks like in practice, and whether a structure like that could work for you • How to stop torturing yourself in the bedroom and finally get out of your head long enough to actually feel something • The real reason long-term relationships lose their spark — and the daily habits that keep attraction from quietly dying • How to talk to your kids about sex, body image, and peer pressure in a way that actually lands • Why vulnerability isn't a personality trait you either have or don't — it's a skill, and it's one you can learn This episode is sponsored by...
