On Tuesday October 29th, the NCAA, the organization that manages collegiate sports announced that its governing body voted unanimously to start the process of allowing college athletes to profit from their names, images and likeness. The NCAA’s board of governors gathered Tuesday morning in Atlanta on the campus of Emory University for its final regularly scheduled meeting of 2019. The board asked the three separate NCAA divisions to “Immediately begin figuring out how to update their rules in a way that maintains a distinction between college and professional sports”. Over the years, several NCAA players, coaches and programs have found themselves embroiled in controversy regarding financial perks given to players. This issue has escaped not even the biggest of names in our sports culture. NFL Quarterback Cam Newton, former basketball star and commentator Chris Webber, and Bengals Star Wide Receiver A.J. On Tuesday October 23rd, incumbent Republican Patrick McHenry and Democrat David Wilson Brown held their lone debate ahead of the election in North Carolina's 10th Congressional district. It took place at Highland Brewing in Asheville and was sponsored by the Council of Independent Business Owners (CIBO). The 10th was heavily redrawn earlier this decade during the last round of redistricting. It stretches west from the Charlotte suburbs to Polk County - with a narrow portion that juts north in Buncombe County that includes most of Asheville and Black Mountain. On Tuesday October 16th, Blue Ridge Public Radio and the Asheville Citizen-Times hosted a forum with the candidates for the District 3 seat on the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners.
