Hello and welcome to Front End Chatter, Britain's Best Biking Podcast presented by 'Fox Mulder' Hargreaves and 'Dana Scully' Fitz-Gibbons – because, spookily, this is FEC Episode 218; exactly the same number of episodes as TV's The X-Files. Except it's not spooky at all because it's not a coincidence. It's inevitable there's a TV show with exactly 218 episodes, and it's the X-Files; if we waited until FEC 219 to make the connection, it would be the same number of episodes as the original ABC run of the American improvisational comedy series Whose Line Is It Anyway? Insert your own joke here. And thanks as always to our benevolent benefactors Bennetts, Britain's Best Bike insurers, and bikesocial.co.uk, the website/YouTube channel for all your biking needs. And remember to become a BikeSocial Member – it's automatic if you're insured with Bennetts, or it's £60 per year or £6 per month if not. But it means you get access to loads of competitions, offers and money-off deals on a veritable panoply of kit – basically, if you're thinking of buying anything for your bike, check to see if it's on the list; you might be able to save more than the cost of membership. For a list of current offers and discounts, visit rewards.bennetts.co.uk/categories Right, on with the show, and this week Simon and Martin natter about: • Triumph's new Trident 800 • Ducati's new Monster • Kawasaki's new KLE500 • Honda's new CB1000F • Yamaha's new Ténéré 700 World Raid Plus • BMW R1300 GSA v RS v RT, and the merits of riding 600 miles for one photo • Has motorcycling got too easy; if you don't have to earn it, is it worth anything? • What's it like riding Honda's RC213V-S in 2025? • Riding 'signatures' • What's the easiest engine to work on? • And loads of other hot air and nonsense Thanks for listening, please tell your motorcycling pals and spread the FEC message of love, hope, friendship and riding as far and fast as possible at all times... Sean Blake is lucky to be alive. Through recovery, developing self-compassion, Sean now advocates for early intervention with a society that understands this mental illness more. Sean Blake, an Irishman from Swords, Dublin, made his way to a Brain Conference in Brussels a couple of weeks ago. This was the first time he travelled alone as an adult, aged 43. All of this was historically linked to his own feeling of unworthiness and inadequacy. Sean's story begins in childhood, marked by years of not feeling “good enough.” This relentless inner critic eventually manifested as incessant running and starvation. After a couple of compliments on how he looked through initial fitness, he was locked into an ever-increasing path of torturous training. He was training to become invisible. He was running himself to death. By his forties, with four children observing this pattern, Sean's daily life was consumed by a regime where he was running many kilometres before ‘breakfast'. We don't mention how many kilometres as this can be a trigger of competition for other anorexics who may feel they are not doing enough in comparison. His ‘breakfast' would be the toast crusts after his children had eaten. They would remember the first time he eventually sat with them to eat a ‘normal' meal. His daughter commented at that moment that he thought his dad only ever ran and ate different food to them. Sean was lucky. A voice inside his head found a way to ask for help. When he arrived at St Patrick's Mental Health Services in Dublin, they told him he was extremely close to death and needed urgent, instant treatment. Over a period of many weeks, Sean unlocked the hold this disease had over his head. He promised himself that if he could get through those months and gain recovery, he would dedicate his voice to this cause. And that is what he has done. Sean transformed his feelings towards himself, and took a path to healing through Compassion-Focused Therapy. One of the exercises was to write a letter to himself: a letter of forgiveness and love. “That letter lifted something off my shoulders, I realised it wasn't my fault. I am good enough.” Today, Sean is a Shine See Change Ambassador, a member of NIMC's lived experience committee (NIMC is the National Implementation Monitoring Committee that oversees ''Sharing The Vision'' Mental Health Policy in Ireland), part of the Service User & Supporters Council at St Patrick's Mental Health Services. He also appeared in the RTÉ documentary Anorexia: My Family and Me, helping to reshape how we talk about eating disorders. In our conversation, Sean shares how recovery means learning to speak kindly to oneself. We discuss the importance of the words used as a community around food and body image; seemingly harmless words about food, fitness or weight can deeply affect those in fragile states of mind. Sean is particularly invested in working with Fitness Studios. Here, right under the observation of health advocates, lies a slightly hidden story of obsessive fitness to the point of anorexia athletica. This episode is a reminder that even the hardest stories can lead to healing when spoken aloud. https://www.instagram.com/seanblake80/?hl=en https://www.stpatricks.ie/ https://about.rte.ie/2024/10/14/rte-airs-compelling-new-documentary-anorexia-my-family-me/ https://www.bodywhys.ie/ https://www.instagram.com/gamian_europe?igsh=MTVqZzd1cmNlNWk5Mw%3D%3D
On this week programme John and Shane take a visit back into the archive to an interview we did in 2015 with a very special guest, the Irish writer Alice Taylor. Alice spoke to us then about her reflections on memory and grief - important considerations during the month of November for many people. We have some our regular reflection on the weekly Sunday gospel which this week is for the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Soul's) and is Luke's account of Jesus raising the son of the widow of Naim.Reflections on memory & grief: An Interview with Alice TaylorNovember can be a hard month for many people as we recall the memory of our dead. In the Roman Catholic tradition it is the month of the Holy Soul's. And it seems to be an appropriate time to reflect and pray for our dead as the year and seasons move towards the death of winter. But coping with death and grief can be difficult and on this weeks programme we share an interview with Alice Taylor to reflect on memory and dealing with grief especially after writing her book As time stood still.Alice Taylor lives in the village of Innishannon in County Cork, in a house attached to the local supermarket and post office. Since her eldest son has taken over responsibility for the shop, she has been able to devote more time to her writing.Alice Taylor worked as a telephonist in Killarney and Bandon. When she married, she moved to Innishannon where she ran a guesthouse at first, then the supermarket and post office. She and her husband, Gabriel Murphy, who sadly passed away in 2005, had four sons and one daughter. In 1984 she edited and published the first issue of Candlelight, a local magazine which has since appeared annually. In 1986 she published an illustrated collection of her own verse. To School Through the Fields was published in May 1988. It was an immediate success, launching Alice on a series of signing sessions, talks and readings the length and breadth of Ireland. Her first radio interview, forty two minutes long on RTÉ Radio's Gay Byrne Show, was the most talked about radio programme of 1988, and her first television interview, of the same length, was the highlight of the year on RTÉ television's Late Late Show. Since then she written numerous other books in fiction, poetry and memoir.Text us at +353 874668950 or email at comeandseeinspirtaions@gmail.com

So, who's really making all the money at RTÉ? Traditionally, it's been the on-air talent leading the earnings table. This year, however, there's been a shake-up: the executives/suits are now outpacing the stars on the payscale. But with Newstalk snapping up big-name presenters, could RTÉ's pay cuts signal the start of a slide? And as fresh revelations emerge about unorthodox payments, is another storm brewing over the national broadcaster's headquarters? Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 31ú lá de mí Dheireadh Fómhair, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1986 tháinig sé amach go raibh Samantha Nolan ar ais lena chlann I mBaile Átha Cliath tar éis obráid a shábháil a shaol. I 2003 tháinig sé amach go raibh RTÉ chun thaispeáin a lán sacar príomhroinn tar éis a rinne siad margadh chun thaispeáin cluichí gach Sathairn do trí shraith. I 1970 bhí méadú den cháin bhóthair sa bhuiséid nua. Bhí an méadú ann do fheithicil príobháideach, cáin ar só agus cáin do chomhlachtaí. Sin na rudaí a tháinig an aire airgeadas amach leis sa Dáil. I 2003 bhí bagairt ann go mbeadh ardú de na praghas de thí nua timpeall an tír ach tháinig Comhairleoir timpeall an chontae amach nach mbeidís chun é seo a dhéanamh. Tháinig siad amach ag moladh tobhach nua. Sin Fatman Scoop le Be Faithful – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 2003. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 2005 dhíol siad culaith a chaith John Lennon ar an chlúdaigh den albam Abbey Road, I gceant do 118 míle dollar I Los Vegas. Dhíol siad Austin Princess a thiomáin John Lennon sa scannán faisnéise Imagine, do 150 míle dollar. Chuaigh cuid den airgead go dtí Amnesty International. I 2007 chabhraigh Leona Lewis leis an íoslódáil ar líne sa Bhreatain mar íoslódáil timpeall 1.7 milliúin daoine amhráin éagsúla I seachtain amháin. Dhíol Leona Lewis níos mó ná 106 míle íoslódáil de a amhrán Bleeding Love. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh giotáraí Johnny Marr sa Bhreatain I 1963 agus rugadh amhránaí Vanilla Ice I Meiriceá ar an lá seo I 1967 agus seo chuid de amhrán. Agus sin é I gcóir Ar An Lá Seo – go raibh míle maith agaibh as éisteacht do bhliain ar fad agus is féidir libh dul ar clare.fm chun éisteacht siar ar aon dóibh. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 31st of October, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1986: Little Samantha Nolan was back in the arms of her family in Dublin after an operation that has probably saved her life. 2003: A feast of live premiership football was being promised by RTE after it secured a deal to screen Saturday afternoon matches for the next 3 seasons. 1970: Car owners were hit in the budget after An increase in the cost of road tax on private vehicles, wholesale tax on luxuries and direct taxation of companies were the features of the supplementary budget brought into Dáil Eireann by the new minister of finance. 2003: The threat of massive hikes in the price of new housing across the country was removed by Clare County Councilors when they rejected the draft scheme proposing a range of new levies at their adjourned October meeting. That was Fatman Scoop with Be Faithful – the biggest song on this day in 2003 Onto music news on this day In 2005 The white suit worn by John Lennon on the cover of the Beatles' Abbey Road album sold for $118,000 (£66,385) at an auction in Las Vegas. And an Austin Princess hearse driven by the late star in the documentary Imagine sold for $150,000 (£84,388). A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the items went to Amnesty International. 2007 22-year-old X Factor winner singer Leona Lewis helped boost UK online music downloads to a record 1.7 million in one week making it the biggest week ever for download sales. Lewis sold more than 106,000 downloads of her track ‘Bleeding Love.' And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – guitarist Johnny Marr was born in the UK in 1963 and singer Vanilla Ice was born in America on this day in 1967 and this is one of his songs.
