Still reeling from the Janel Grant and Ashley Massaro revelations, Harley and Em turn to their Patreon podcast Women's Wrestling Entertainment. Over 11 episodes, they've traced the history of women in WWE from the very beginning. This week we present an abridged version of those first 30 years (1963-1993). The monstrous legacy of The Fabulous Moolah, the tarnished careers of Mad Maxine, Wendi Richter, and the Jumping Bomb Angels, missed opportunities with Sensational Sherri and Luna Vachon, and WWE's first female referee falling prey to Vince McMahon. 30 years in 70 minutes, proving that nothing is new and all of today's evils are just part of a larger pattern that's existed since day one.
We are channeling our midlife crisis with this podcast by reliving our youthful late 80's/early 90's Saturday Mornings of watching syndicated professional wrestling. Our recap of the July 31, 1993 edition of WWF Superstars. On this week's episode: Men On A Mission vs. Brian Costello & The Brooklyn Brawler, Adam Bomb vs. Tony DeVito, Mr. Hughes vs. Jason Headings, The Headshrinkers vs. Bret Tyler & Dave Thornberg, Mr. Perfect vs. Glen Ruth (1:55), and Luna Vachon vs. Sensational Sherri. Last week listener Matt from Boston picked todays show topic...its all about the Sensational Sherri Martel. An accomplished women's wrestler turned into one of the most dynamic managers of the 80's and early 90's. She helped guide the on screen careers of Hall of Fame wrestlers such as Macho Man Randy Savage and Shawn Michaels. Today we share our favorite memories and moments as we talk about the Sensational Sherri Martel.
Norito Tateno & Itsuki Yamazaki came together to form the Jumping Bomb Angels in the 1980s. They were one of the greatest babyface tag teams of the era, putting on phenomenal matches in All Japan Women's Wrestling and the WWF. We look at their career with matches involving Bull Nakano, Lioness Asuka, Sensational Sherri, the Glamour Girls, and more. Having a great match on a big show is one thing but having the greatest match of your storied career on one of the most historically significant cards ever is a whole different thing. This card was a joint card between New Japan Pro Wrestling, All Japan Pro Wrestling and WWF just a mere days after The Ultimate Warrior dethrones Hulk Hogan for the WWF title in Toronto's Skydome. This match, without a doubt is a must watch for every wrestling fan, especially those who are familiar with both Saving and Tenryu. These two tell one of the greatest stories in ever to be told within a squared circle. Tariq explains just how crazy the crowd and commentators get and how the Japanese equivalent of Tom Brokaw loses his mind and gets involved in the action. By the way, the greatest performance in this match, hands down, belongs to Sensational Sherri. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sixmantagpodcast/support

The Recognized Symbol of Excellence, in Sports Entertainment!Host Ray Russell has a blast going back in time to 1986 in the World Wrestling Federation in order to analyze and dissect all the goings-on heading into the new year of 1987. This episode is LOADED with news, notes, background history, fun anecdotes, a deep dive into the ENTIRE WWF roster leading into 87, and yes plenty of SOUNDBITES for your listening pleasure! Some of the topics discussed on this episode of the Grenade include...VINCE MCMAHON'S PILLAGING OF THE MONTREAL TERRITORY - The WWF swoops in to take the remaining top stars of the Montreal territory including the Rougeau Brothers, Rick Martel, and Dino Bravo!THE HOT FEUDS OF 1986 - We discuss at length the hottest feuds of 1986 that carry over into the new year, including PIPER VS. ADONIS, SAVAGE VS. STEAMBOAT, AND HULK HOGAN VS. "MR. WONDERFUL" PAUL ORNDORFF! Plus, Ray discusses the Orndorff heel turn, the financial success of the Hogan/Orndorff feud on the house shows, the underlying Macho Man vs. Bruno Sammartino feud that came out of the Steamboat injury, Adrian Adoni's "firing" and rehiring in the midst of his feud with the Hot Rod, and so much more!HEEL REFEREE DANNY DAVIS - We document many of the concerning issues inside the ring with questionable referee Danny Davis throughout the fall and early winter of 1986. Jack Tunney would have to be blind not to see the shenanigans caused by Davis, and the worst is yet to come!ANDRE THE GIANT MAKES HIS TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO THE WWF! - We look at Andre's acromegaly, his "suspension" from the WWF, his stint in New Japan following WrestleMania 2, his return to the WWF as THE GIANT MACHINE, his time away to film The Princess Bride, and Andre's return to the company following a questionable hearing in which Andre wasn't a part of... but Bobby Heenan was!!! While uncovering the full story of what took place aboard the U.S. Air Flight in 1987, I also uncovered several stories dating back to the 1970s including one of Neidhart leaping off a 4th story balcony with a Fire Extinguisher strapped to his back and swinging from 4 bed sheets tied together like Tarzan into a lower level apartment's plate glass window. Unbelievable! From there we look at Vince McMahon fronting Neidhart the money (and the attorney) to sue the Airlines, a case that Neidhart won (over $300,000 in 1991 money) and then refused to pay McMahon back! From there, we move on to the case of the Dynamite Kid, another man who was working with multiple injuries before they caught up to him one December night in Toronto. We discuss the temporary paralyzing back injury of Dynamite, the surgery that followed, and the ramifications that would plague him for the remainder of his wrestling career.WRESTLEMANIA III NEWS - We look at the initial plans to have WrestleMania 3 in three different locations yet again, what caused the decision to be nixed, and some of Dave Meltzer's guesses as to the matches on the big show, involving the likes of Mr. T teaming with Roddy Piper, a babyface return of Big John Studd, and Bruno Sammartino stepping into the ring to team with VINCE MCMAHON!!!WWF ON FOX - The fledgling Fox Broadcasting Company acquires the WWF on many of their larger city FOX affiliates, prompting all local affiliates to go with the WWF should they want wrestling programs on their station!HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD - Acting fever is in the air, all the way back in the mid-1980s. Everyone wants to be in the pictures including Jesse "The Body" Ventura, Ricky Steamboat, Big John Studd, and Hulk Hogan... brother!HERE & THERE - Random bits of news and notes discussing Roddy Piper's refusal to work the Pacific Northwest shots due to his loyalty to promoter Don Owen. We're back on the road, and this time we are headed straight for King of the Ring 1993! Hulk Hogan is, improbably, WWF Champion again, but he's nowhere to be found on WWF programming. Meanwhile the company is being held together by the others, as Lex Luger battles Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels is attacked by a returning Marty Jannetty, Mr Perfect digs in against the evil Doink, and Razor Ramon runs afoul of a certain stick thin jobber with a surprise up his sleeve. Bam Bam Bigelow, the Smoking Gunns, Bob Backlund, Tito Santana, Luna Vachon, Sensational Sherri, Jerry Lawler, and the Steiners are on deck, and many more!We unearth new truths, discover new narratives, and so much more right here on WWF: The Legacy Series!
Your lovable group of misfit wrestling readers is back again, this time to talk about one of the most beloved and reviled figures in professional wrestling--managers.Existing somewhere in the hinterlands between a sports agent, a boxing trainer, and a hip-hop hypeman, the manager is an extension of a wrestler's character. The manager eloquently speaks for his or her client, instigates feuds, illegally intervenes when the ref is not looking, and generally serves as a catalyst for chaos. We kick it off by trying to define the somewhat nebulous role of the manager. "What would you say...you do here?" Dave talks about the manager as an extension of a wrestler's character, and Chris suggests that being a manager is an act of care--speaking on the mic to help develop a character and make it work. Noell sees the role as one of crowd interaction, getting the viewers hyped up about the narrative happenings. As part of this question, we talk about a range of managers, including "Classy" Freddie Blassie, "Captain" Lou Albano, Don Callis, Gary Hart, Jimmy Hart, Woman (Nancy Benoit), and Reginald (the Sommelier). On Jimmy Hart, Chris notes how you always believed he was working for his client--to the point where he would be wearing a blazer with his client's face airbrushed on the back!--and strove to be "punchable" as would Noell put it. We also talk about how Nancy Benoit is believed to be the first female manager (versus other roles like a valet or handler). Noell's History Corner takes us back once again to the beginning, to the period at the infancy of modern wrestling known as The Pioneer Era (c. 1898-1942). We discuss Billy Sandow (the namesake of the former Damien Sandow) and his role as an early manager, doing real-world work like making sure his clients, including Ed "The Strangler" Lewis, got paid. In the 1930s, Frank Smith, who managed Jim Browning, was also a writer for The Chicago Tribune. We close up the show with our favorite moments that were built around a manager's performance. Dave takes us back to Bob Backlund and the baggage created when his manager threw in the towel on him. Noell brings us to a favorite moment, when the star-bedecked Miss Elizabeth runs into the ring to save the Macho Man from Sensational Sherri's ire and reignite their romance. And Chris brings us to the second greatest betrayal of all time, which involved the Undertaker and Paul Bearer. We hope we managed to pull off a good episode for you, and we would love to hear from you on Twitter or via email with your picks for best manager!
