On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two British gentlemen who made big waves in the past couple of decades and who've collided just recently for a celebratory remix: It's Tom Vek and Gus Unger-Hamilton. Tom Vek released his instant-classic debut We Have Sound back in 2005, putting his own spin on post-punk and dance and riding the wave of so-called “indietronica” with catchy tracks like “Nothing But Green Lights.” He hasn't exactly been prolific since then, releasing quality albums every few years while also working hard in other areas of the industry: Check out both supercollector.com and his upcoming music player, Sleevenote. But in celebration of We Have Sound's 20th anniversary, Vek asked a bunch of friends and fellow musicians to remix each of the album's tracks, including folks like Baths, Glass Animals, and the other half of today's conversation, Gus Unger-Hamilton of the band Alt-J. Check Unger-Hamilton's remix of Vek's song “Cover” right here. It's unsurprising that Unger-Hamilton put his own spin on Vek's song: Alt-J has been scribbling in the bombastic, weirder corners of indie-rock and art-rock for since 2007, though they didn't release their big debut, An Awesome Wave, until 2012. They've since embraced their oddness on a string of records, with the latest being 2022's The Dream, which was hailed at the time as a return to the power of their debut. New music is likely on the horizon, though as you'll hear in this chat, Alt-J is currently without a label home. Label homes are one of many things these two chat about in this lively conversation: They're both into the logos of their favorite record companies, they're both really into fancy watches, and they're both back into the lost art of reading a good book. Though Gus admits he hasn't read a particular novel that his band famously borrowed a title from. Listen and find out which one. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Tom Vek and Gus Unger-Hamilton for chatting. Birthdays And Bubble Baths (10/7/25) by 96.5 WKLH
A 45-minute hot bath raises your core body temperature by 1.1 degrees C (2 degrees F) and boosts cardiac output as much as a moderate-intensity cardio workout Hot water immersion increases immune activity, helps control inflammation, and supports immune surveillance Compared to traditional and infrared saunas, hot baths triggered the strongest cardiovascular and immune responses due to water's more efficient heat transfer Very hot water dries out your skin, alters its pH, and disrupts your skin microbiome, especially if you have eczema, rosacea, or sensitive skin You can reduce risks by keeping bath sessions under 30 minutes, moisturizing with coconut oil immediately afterward, and rotating with sauna usage if hot baths irritate your skin

Preview: Julia Felix was a woman of property and an entrepreneur in 79 AD Pompeii, running a luxurious entertainment complex. This complex offered "bougie baths," gardens, and fine dining, allowing middle-class patrons to experience luxury. Archaeology reveals she owned property and ran businesses, defying traditional written accounts. She likely died in the Vesuvius eruption. VESUVIUS

And while it's such an important part of supporting our mental health, I've been reflecting lately on how the mental health space and our hyper individualistic culture has most of our self-care...well...super self-focused.We've got:Comfy (restorative) self-care: the things that feel warm and nourishing in the moment (bubble baths, memes, a cuppa in the sun).Uncomfy or “boring” (growth oriented) self-care: the things we don't feel like doing but know help us in the long run (going for that walk, setting a boundary, having the awkward conversation). But lately, I've been thinking about a third type too— self-care that gets us outside of ourselves. Not just tending to our needs, but turning our focus outward — toward helping others and strengthening our community. It doesn't have to be big or time-consuming:Checking in on a neighbour who lives aloneWriting a kind review for a small business you loveCooking an extra serve of dinner to drop off for a friendDonating bloodVolunteering an hour at a local event or community gardenWhy does this matter? Research shows that volunteering and helping others can reduce stress, combat depression, and even lead to a longer life. It's good for the people we help — and it's surprisingly good for us, too.So, I'd love to hear from you…What does comfy self-care look like for you? What's your uncomfy/boring self-care?And what's one way you could try community self-care in the next week or two?To connect with Vanessa:Find Vanessa on Facebook: (2) FacebookFind Vanessa on Instagram: Vanessa Preston (@vanessa_preston_) • Instagram photos and videosCheck out Vanessa's website to find a freebie and all about her intuitive eating and body image programs: Vanessa Preston (podia.com)Or her practice website: Green life Psychology - Green Life Psychology Disclaimer:This podcast represents the opinions of Vanessa Preston and her guests to the show. This week, Mel kicks us off with a truly excellent fact that blew our socks off, then we get into a bit of childhood nostalgia with a heavy Royal Melbourne Show theme. We also talk showering (together), baths, Monty tells us about her partner Sam's 'NSB' dinner and we have a cackle over some embarrassing for no reasons. Enjoy! Fancy supporting us on Patreon? In this episode, we continue exploring the laws of cooking on Shabbat, focusing on the halachic status of hot baths, transferring water between vessels, and mixing hot and cold water. We examine distinctions between primary and secondary vessels, when adding cold water is permitted, and the implications of pouring flows. Practical cases are discussed, including handling kettles, mixing large amounts of cold water with hot, and avoiding accidental cooking with hot foods placed on cold items.

When it comes to getting clean, some people prefer chilling in the bath for a good half an hour or more, while others like how quick and practical it is having a shower. Let's consider the two choices from a health perspective. It's pretty common knowledge that taking a bath isn't very eco-friendly, in terms of water consumption. Of course there are variables at play here when comparing the two. When taking a bath, you only really need to fill around a third of the tub up, so your torso is submerged when you lie down. But some people will fill it higher, which obviously uses more water. When taking a shower, it depends how long you keep it running for and how powerful the flow rate is. What does taking a bath do to our bodies? What about its impact on the cardiovascular system? Are there any points of comparison where taking a shower is better? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: How long do I have to wait to swim after eating? What are the world's least safe travel destinations? While many Canadians are continuing to boycott products made in the United States, when it comes to mikvehs, nearly a dozen Canadian Jewish communities have no qualms about accepting their money. Mikvah USA is a Brooklyn-based charity that gives out financial aid, advice and technical support for renovating outdated mikvehs and building brand-new ones, and in the last few years, they've supported 10 clients in Ontario and Quebec. One of them is Ottawa's Naomi Bulka Community Mikvah, which held its grand reopening on July 20, having completed a makeover of the 25-year-old facility, attached to Ottawa's Soloway ewish Community Centre. While only 30 women have been using the mikveh each month, officials believe they will attract larger crowds who come for the religious experience in a bright, refreshed, spa-like atmosphere. The team in Ottawa received a grant to kickstart independent fundraising from Mikvah USA, which has been subsidizing mikveh projects across North America since 2004, mostly in smaller Jewish communities. The list includes London, Ont.; Quebec City; and a forthcoming mikveh in Saint-Agathe-des-Monts, Que., which is still under construction. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast, host Ellin Bessner is joined by some Canadian mikveh organizers who collaborated with the American charity to get their projects to the finish line: Dina Teitlebaum and her husband, Rabbi Levy Teitlebaum, in Ottawa, and Chana Carlebach and her husband, Rabbi Emanuel Carlebach, who are building the multimillion-dollar mikveh in Saint-Agathe-des-Monts. In this deeply personal and transformational episode, Eve sits down with Britton and Carolee Beckham, a married couple who share their powerful journey of healing, reconnection, and radical redefinition of love, sex, and spirituality. Raised in the Mormon church and bound by purity culture, Britton and Carolee candidly open up about the infidelity that rocked their marriage, the church's damaging response, and how plant medicine, spiritual deconstruction, and sacred sexuality led them to a new foundation—one built on truth, desire, and liberation. From psilocybin journeys to moon rituals, from shame to self-love, this episode dives into: The impact of religious conditioning on sex and identity Why traditional approaches to healing didn't work—and what did The role of plant medicine (including their first mushroom ceremony) in spiritual awakening How moon cycles and ritual baths became a gateway to feminine empowerment The transformative power of sexual reeducation and ISTA training Why radical honesty was the key to saving—and elevating—their marriage Whether you're navigating your own healing, redefining your relationship with sex, or exploring spirituality beyond religion, this episode is a permission slip to do it your way—with love, courage, and full-body liberation.
