Celebrated as a democratic space for all Americans, the major league ballpark in fact privileged the middle- and upper-class white male fan while tacitly marginalizing poor urban residents and people of color. Seth S. Tannenbaum examines how the game's economically and socially stratified system reflected changing understandings of urban space, inclusion, and the body politic. Major League Baseball owners and executives masked exclusion and division by touting the game's accessibility and instituting few overtly discriminatory policies. Affluent white males enjoyed a comfortable, safe space that reinforced their status as the prototypical American citizen. At the same time, ballparks relocated in response to how these favored fans felt about cities. Tannenbaum traces this journey from the urban locales of the Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium through the suburban-oriented Dodger Stadium and Houston Astrodome to the cloistered fantasy of city life offered by Camden Yards. As he shows, owners' pursuit of greater profits incorporated existing barriers that helped shape the structure of modern parks. A revealing social history, Bleacher Seats and Luxury Suites: Democracy and Division at the Twentieth-Century Ballpark (U Illinois Press, 2026) revises the persistent myth of the ballpark as an egalitarian melting pot. This week we’re talking about a story that came to be after unveiling of Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ upcoming Skyview Regent Suite. It's a veritable mansion-at-sea with a private gym, sauna, bar and dining room that seats 12. And what's more surprising than the price? The fact that it was booked within one minute on 10 of 13 itineraries. Or perhaps that's not a surprise. Advisors tell us that there are countdowns to sales launches and wait lists for the newest crop of ultra-palatial, ultra-big, ultra-luxurious cruise ship suites. With luxury advisor Carlos Edery and cruise editor Teri West, we look at what these top suites look like and what amenities they come with. Who are the customers and what do they want in a vacation? Is there a challenge of keeping up with guest expectations? And, of course, what might come next. But as time went on and CRTs were phased out, a new paradigm emerged - the operators reference monitor and a larger client monitor. This kind of setup has persisted in color suites for over two decades. While the reference/client monitor setup is ubiquitous, it's not without issues. Room setup/positioning becomes vital, managing metamerism issues when using two different display technologies are used can be a battle and perceptual matching between monitors can be challenging. But what if you could eliminate multi-display issues and depend on a single large reference monitor - well thats not without its own issues! In this episode we'll explore this topic including covering some specifics including:Recap on traditional color room monitoring setupsGrading theaters - a model for a single display roomMimicking the living room and challenges that presents What's metamerism and why its such an important topic in multi-display setupsIssues mixing display technologiesThe importance of room layoutsPerceptual matching - what is it and does it work? The downsides of perceptual matchingAnd more! Your Day Off @Hairdustry; A Podcast about the Hair Industry!
Season 9, Episode 1: State of the Industry w/ Gordon MillerIn this annual “State of the Industry” conversation, Corey and Katie sit down with Gordon Miller to unpack what actually happened in 2025 and what salon pros should pay attention to moving into 2026.We're kicking off Season 9 with perspective, data, and real talk — not clickbait.Gordon, now the new General Manager of Intercoiffure, brings decades of industry insight to break down what's actually happening behind the headlines.According to aggregated industry data (KIM Report pulling from thousands of POS and booking systems):Overall revenue was roughly flatGuest counts are downFrequency of visit is decliningRetail dipped, especially in smaller businesses and suitesLarger team-based salons (20+ providers) are seeing growth againPrice increases helped stabilize revenue — but without them, many businesses were slightly down.Emotionally? The industry feels uncertain and reactive — mirroring the larger world. From “don't prebook” to “retail is dead,” viral advice is spreading fast — even when it applies to only a small percentage of stylists. The reality:Most stylists are not booked out months in advance.Smart prebooking and retention systems still work.Social media today is marketing-driven, not community-driven — and that shifts what voices get amplified.Retail didn't collapse — but it's soft.Historically, retail accounts for about 5% of salon revenue (7% at its peak). The larger issue? The industry never consistently built strong retail systems. The act of recommending matters — even if the client doesn't purchase from you.It builds trust, retention, and authority. For suite owners especially, inventory strategy and cash flow management are critical.Suites surged during COVID but growth is leveling off. Larger suite companies are now acquiring smaller regional operators.Chair rental remains larger overall.Meanwhile, 20+ person salons are seeing team growth again — suggesting a quiet shift back toward structured environments. Many newer stylists have never experienced strong in-salon education or structured mentorship due to post-COVID cuts and digital pivots.Independent educators can be transformational — but they reach only a small portion of the industry.Education — especially business education — remains the biggest opportunity. From AI concierge systems booking appointments after hours to tools helping managers communicate and analyze numbers more effectively, AI is already improving operations. It's not replacing stylists — it's supporting better business. The opportunity to do great hair depends on sitting on top of a strong business.Creativity matters. But sustainability requires systems, education, and intentional leadership. The industry isn't broken — it's evolving. The question is: Are you building a business that evolves with it?2025: Flat — But Not FineThe Clickbait EffectRetail: The Real StorySuites, Rental & Team-Based SalonsEducation & The Missing ExperienceAI in Real SalonsThe Core Takeaway
Things are continuing to flourish in Queenstown. The mid-scale ‘Holiday Inn Express & Suites', which boasts 277 rooms in the City Centre, is being refurbished to become ‘voco Queenstown' – part of IHG's premium portfolio. The move targets high-end tourism, with the hotel running at around 90% occupancy for nine months of the year. Hotel Council Aotearoa Strategic Director James Doolan told Mike Hosking that it's normal to think about renovating and repositioning every seven to ten years, but upgrading to the next level is an encouraging sign. He says central government's increased investment in event attraction and destination marketing has allowed private businesses to invest in their assets. Send us a text✨ Was steckt wirklich hinter der Allegris-Verspätung bei Lufthansa?
In a so-called k-shaped economy, higher earners head up on an upward angle, but lower earners, on the lower leg of the “k” drop behind. This bifurcation is also playing out in some corners of the travel industry as ultrahigh-net worth travelers spend to snap up the top level suites, but travelers with less resources are slower to book entry-level rooms. In this episode, host Rebecca Tobin talks with hotels editor Christina Jelski and Jon Makhmaltchi, the founder of J.Mak hospitality, about how hotel companies are physically configuring their properties to appeal to those at top of the k, the pitfalls of over-relying on one market segment and how hotels and advisors are working to attract entry-level and aspirational luxury travelers. Caribe Royale becomes the first-ever “Family Vacationer Approved” property based on the show's criteria. What We Cover First impressions: A grand lobby, festive décor, and a massive holiday chocolate display that sets the tone right away. Caribe Royale is also a Disney Good Neighbor Hotel, close to the parks without feeling swallowed up by the chaos. Rooms: Every accommodation is either a suite or a villa—a major win for families. Rob and Traci break down why the layout works (especially with a teenager), and why the two-bedroom villas (full kitchen + separate bedrooms) are great for longer stays and extra space. Pool + holiday magic: Resort-style pool with a big waterslide, waterfalls, splash area, lounge chairs, and optional cabanas. During the holidays, Caribe Royale turns into a chocolate wonderland, including: North Pole Express: 32-ft chocolate train (1,600 lbs of chocolate)Santa's Magical Flight: sleigh + reindeer (2,000 lbs of chocolate)Jingle Bell Junction: chocolate villagePlus letters to Santa with an elf reply, cookie decorating, holiday movies, cocoa at check-in, and Santa/Mrs. Claus visits (Dec 20–Christmas Eve). Guest Interviews Luciano Sperduto (GM): How the resort stays ahead of changing family expectations, why culture and staff friendliness matter most, and what's coming next—including villa remodeling (planned through 2026 into early 2027), restaurant updates, and a Stadium Club expansion with a bigger indoor/outdoor “tailgate” area. Chef David Hackett: Caribe Royale's culinary philosophy—starting with great ingredients, balancing upscale dining with family-friendly menus, and why they aim to be trendsetters. Chef also shares the story behind the chocolate displays and how much work goes into building and storing them. Food Report (What We Ate) Breakfast at Tropicale:Rob: omelet + breakfast potatoes + cheese gritsTraci: French toast + bacon + strawberriesKids: chocolate chip pancakes + eggs + bacon (and hot chocolate)Calypso's (poolside): Rob goes deep on the red snapper sandwich (he ordered it twice), shrimp quesadilla, crab tostadas, and loaded tater kegs. Chase loved the smash burger; Nash loved the cheese quesadilla. Traci's highlights include the tater tots and a huge slice of orange creamsicle cake (plus chocolate dessert). Virgin pina coladas by the pool were a kid favorite. Stadium Club: More than a “sports bar”—massive LED screens + simulator bays the boys loved. Standouts: candied bacon with orange/rosemary, coconut shrimp with key lime aioli, giant pretzel with beer cheese and mustard, elote chips and dip, and flatbread pizza. Rob admits he now needs a return trip for the chicken and waffles. The Market: A late-night lifesaver—grab-and-go options plus house-made desserts, confections, truffles, and ice cream. Open until midnight. Starbucks on-site near the entrance with mobile ordering. Family Vacationer Approved (A Big First) Rob and Traci explain their scoring checklist—Space, Experience, Location, Dining, and Overall Family-Friendliness—and announce Caribe Royale is the first property to earn the Family Vacationer Approved designation (80+ score).

Musique : Thibaud R.Habillage sonore / mixage : Alexandre LechauxLe Shop Tous Parano

Extended stay is dominating the hospitality pipeline, but not all brands are the same. For #NoVacancyNews, I spoke with Jennifer Kearney, CMO of StayAPT Suites, about how they're redefining the category with a true apartment-style experience. During The Lodging Conference we discussed the psychology of space, the importance of privacy and independence, and why StayAPT's purpose-built design is attracting both long-term and transient guests. This isn't just about sleep — it's about living your life on the road. #extendedstay #hospitalitydesign
