This week on a special episode of The Business, Kim Masters talks with Shrinking co-creator and star Jason Segel, recorded live at KCRW’s Annenberg Performance Studio. Segel looks back on highlights from Freaks and Geeks, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and The Muppets. He also discusses how Shrinking, now nominated for five Emmys, came together with co-creators Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein. Plus, after closing the $8 billion Paramount Global deal with David Ellison’s Skydance, Shari Redstone tells her story in a New York Times interview: boardroom drama, her doubts about the Ellisons, and the Trump settlement that cleared regulatory hurdles. Matt Belloni and Lucas Shaw dig in.
In this episode of The Geek in Review, we welcome back Pablo Arredondo, VP of CoCounsel at Thomson Reuters, along with Joel Hron, the company's CTO. The conversation centers on the recent release of ChatGPT-5 and the rise of “reasoning models” that go beyond traditional language models' limitations. Pablo reflects on his years of tracking neural net progress in the legal field, from escaping “keyword prison” to the current ability of AI to handle complex, multi-step legal reasoning. He describes scenarios where entire litigation records could be processed to map out strategies for summary judgment motions, calling it a transformative step toward what he sees as “celestial legal products.”Joel brings an engineering perspective, comparing the legal sector's AI trajectory to the rapid advancements in AI developer tools. He notes that these tools have historically amplified the skills of top performers rather than leveling the playing field. Applied to law, he believes AI will free lawyers from rote work and allow them to focus on higher-value decisions and strategy. The discussion shifts to Deep Research, Thomson Reuters' latest enhancement for CoCounsel, which leverages reasoning models in combination with domain-specific tools like KeyCite to follow “breadcrumb trails” through case law with greater accuracy and transparency. The trio explores the growing importance of transparency and verification in AI-driven research. Joel explains how Deep Research provides real-time visibility into an AI's reasoning path, highlights potentially hallucinated citations, and integrates verification tools to cross-check references against authoritative databases. Pablo adds historical and philosophical perspective, likening hallucinations to a tiger “going tiger,” stressing that while the risk cannot be eliminated, the technology already catches a significant number of human errors. Both agree that AI tools must be accompanied by human oversight and well-designed workflows to build trust in their output.Looking to the future, Joel predicts that the adoption of AI agents will reshape organizational talent strategies, elevating the importance of those who excel at complex decision-making. Pablo proposes “ambient AI” as the next frontier—intelligent systems that unobtrusively monitor legal work, flagging potential issues instantly, much like a spellchecker. Both caution that certain legal tasks, especially in judicial opinion drafting, warrant careful consideration before fully integrating AI. The episode closes with practical insights on staying current, from following AI researchers on social platforms to reading technical blogs and academic papers, underscoring the need for informed engagement in this rapidly evolving space.Listen on mobile platforms: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | YouTube[Special Thanks to Legal Technology Hub for their sponsoring this episode.] Blue Sky: @geeklawblog.com @marlgebEmail: geekinreviewpodcast@gmail.comMusic: Jerry David DeCiccaAcademic Papers:Weekly research for trends.scholar.google.com,ssrn.com,arxiv.orgFrançois Chollet: Balanced AI insights. x.com/fcholletfchollet.comJason Wei (OpenAI): Reinforcement learning updates. x.com/jason_d_weopenai.com/blogGeoffrey Hinton: AI research insights.x.com/geoffreyhintonRichard Sutton: Reinforcement learning and philosophical takes.incompleteideas.netReinforcement Learning: An Introduction (Book):http://incompleteideas.net/book/RLbook2020.pdfSeminal work by Turing Award winner.University of Alberta Lab: https://rlai-lab.github.ioCurrent research on scalable AI methods.Blue Sky: @geeklawblog.com @marlgebEmail: geekinreviewpodcast@gmail.comMusic: Jerry David DeCiccaTranscript

We're back to time travel through rock history with another issue of the Decibel Geek Times. In this edition, we pay tribute to several rock legends on their deathdays, honoring the lasting impact of Dick Wagner, Jack Russell, Eric Wagner, Les Paul, Dave Williams, and Pete Way. We also celebrate a wide range of album anniversaries spanning 15 to 40 years. From Iron Maiden's The Final Frontier — the album that trolled fans into thinking it could be their last — to Dio's Sacred Heart, we revisit the stories, chart stats, and behind-the-scenes moments that made these records memorable. Highlights include Halford's triumphant Resurrection, Extreme's career-defining Pornograffitti, Mother Love Bone's bittersweet debut Apple, and many more milestones across the decades. On the new music front, there's plenty to be excited about. Alice Cooper returns with The Revenge of Alice Cooper, reuniting original band members and even featuring vintage guitar work from the late Glen Buxton. Honeymoon Suite drops Wake Me Up When the Sun Goes Down, Halestorm climbs to new heights with Everest, Ellefson Soto unleashes Unbreakable, and fresh releases from Chevelle and The Rods round out your next listens. This time, we're crossing the streams of pop culture opinions as we take on Esquire's Top 25 Superhero Movies List by Eric Francisco, armed with chaos-inducing items like The Bomb, The Switcheroo, and The Recast. Will your favorites survive? Will we nuke something you love? Will questionable picks finally get the boot? There's no way around this descriptor: this episode is Fantastic. But be-Four The Guys get to The Thing they came to talk about, there are notable Geeks of the Week to mention. Jay heard about a Hamilton cast member who's been there from day one, and hopes the same will happen to him in this podcast. Robbie geeks out over a potential Star Wars-Dr. Who crossover (well, sort of - with a cast member, at least.) And Art - in his own special segment, soon to be known as the Optimist with the Obituaries (they're still workshopping the title)- shares sad news about one of WKRP's finest. In Jay's Regrettable Segment, ROM the Spaceknight gets special coverage: Robbie has been waiting for this one to get to Earth-1012. Then they get to the final Stretch, a discussion of the MCU's latest gift to the theater: Fantastic Four, First Steps. This may be the best FF ever, less Torched by the critics than any of the variants thus far, and The Guys agree. Good casting overall, balanced story with perhaps some nuances not seen very often in superhero flicks (spoiler: there's a baby), terrific sets, fascinating time setting, useful mid-credit scene, and fun music. The MCU may not be Invisible much longer.

Guest: Dr. Jon NeseWhen we think of the Battle of Gettysburg, we picture tactics, terrain, and turning points but what about the temperature? The clouds? The crushing heat, the unexpected storms, the impassable rivers? In their book The Weather Gods Curse the Gettysburg Campaign, meteorologist Dr. Jon Nese and historian Jeffrey Harding uncover a side of the Civil War that's often overlooked: the weather. Using firsthand accounts and reconstructed data, they reveal how atmospheric conditions shaped everything from troop movements to morale, and may have influenced the outcome of one of the most pivotal campaigns in American history. Today on Weather Geeks, we go beyond the battlefield to explore how weather wasn't just a backdrop to Gettysburg—it was an active player. In this lively episode of GeekFreaks Podcast, Frank and the gang dig deep into the latest pop culture chatter. We cover the lively debate over which fictional characters would thrive on social media, break down the intense new trailer for One Piece season two, and share candid thoughts on the Highlander reboot casting news. Squeaks and Jonathan pitch their dream remakes and sequels, from Short Circuit to Back to the Future. We also talk about DC's rumored “henchman” movie—and pitch our own cheeky DC headlines. Lastly, the crew celebrates the return of space opera epics and welcomes Distance Nerd's Jen, Liam, and Graveyard for a spirited interview on fandom culture. Timestamps & Topics 00:00:00 – 00:03:00 – Introduction and “Fictional Characters on Social Media” debate: Star‑Lord, Joker, Riddler, and Flash. 00:03:00 – 00:06:00 – One Piece season two trailer reaction: multiple arcs, what to expect from Reverse Mountain and Alabasta, and Chopper's introduction. 00:06:00 – 00:08:00 – Does anime need to stick to the manga? Filler episodes versus character moments. 00:08:00 – 00:11:30 – News: Dave Bautista cast in the Highlander reboot—why the debate around his physique doesn't matter. 00:11:30 – 00:15:00 – What remakes do we actually want? Ideas range from Short Circuit's AI twist to a refreshed Back to the Future. 00:15:00 – 00:20:00 – Squeaks' ultimate pitch: E.T. returns—and he's connected to the Star Wars Senate cameo? 00:20:00 – 00:27:00 – DC rumors: Zach Cregger's “Henchman” script, who could carry a story about the accidental capture of Batman, and why Elseworlds stories are fun. 00:27:00 – 00:38:00 – Main Discussion: The renaissance of space operas. From Dune and Avatar to upcoming Star Wars projects and the importance of spectacle, practical effects vs. CGI, and why grand storytelling is back. 00:38:00 – 00:49:00 – “Geek Culture and Community” interview with Distance Nerd's Jen, Graveyard, and Liam: building an online fan community, favorite sci‑fi properties, and how their live podcast style resonates with listeners. 00:49:00 – 01:09:00 – More pop culture news and games: Marvel's Green Lantern theory, fake DC news challenge, and the crew's comedic speculations on Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and Ryan Reynolds' ultimate crossover. 01:09:00 – end – Wrap‑up: Episode highlights, network updates, content from other podcasts, and personal recommendations—how King of the Hill's return hits the right notes, why Dope Thief on Apple TV is a sleeper hit, and more. Key Takeaways Fictional characters on TikTok? The gang imagines Star‑Lord taking selfies across galaxies, the Riddler fostering a cult following, and Flash zipping around doing livestreams from inside STAR Labs. One Piece season two will be jam‑packed. Squeaks notes the show will likely fold multiple arcs into one season, meaning nonstop action and beloved characters like Chopper and Nico Robin. Remakes done right: While the crew is wary of endless reboots, they'd love to see Short Circuit reimagined with modern AI themes or a thoughtful sequel to E.T. set in today's world. DC's “henchman” movie intrigues. Zach Cregger's script idea follows a low‑level villain who accidentally knocks out Batman and then wrestles with what to do—worth exploring as an Elseworlds story, especially if it digs into Gotham's underclass. Space operas are back. Thanks to Dune, Avatar, and upcoming Star Wars films, the spectacle‑heavy genre is enjoying a resurgence. The team loves the blend of practical effects and CGI when done well, but they emphasize the need for strong characters and meaningful themes. Geek culture lives online. Jen, Liam, and Graveyard from Distance Nerd share how they've cultivated a welcoming space for fans and why live, improvisational podcasting keeps the energy high. Fun with fake news. The hosts plan to prank DC fans with tongue‑in‑cheek rumors—like Batman stealing Green Lantern's ring or Mr. Freeze battling Clayface—just to poke fun at internet speculation. Personal recs: King of the Hill's revival hits all the right notes, Dope Thief on Apple TV delivers gripping crime drama, and Apple TV quietly produces award‑worthy content. Memorable Quotes “Thriving on social media doesn't mean everybody loves you—it just means you have a huge following.” – Frank “Star‑Lord with different aliens, different species, fighting and selfies in strange worlds? Yes, please!” – Squeaks “Sometimes the monsters show us what it means to be human.” – Frank on beloved AI and sci‑fi themes “Practical effects still matter; CGI needs to be done beautifully—think Dune's sandworms or Avatar's Pandora.” – Squeaks “We're casual, we're opinionated, and we're fans of fans. That's what Distance Nerd stands for.” – Jen Call to Action Love what you hear? Help us continue bringing you thoughtful geek discussions every week!
