Highland Brewing owner and CEO Leah Wong Ashburn provides an update on how Asheville, one of the country's great craft beer cities, is recovering in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.    Last weekend, Highland brewed its first beer since the hurricane cut a path of destruction through Western North Carolina. Ashburn shares the steps the brewery took to return to operations, starting with ensuring that all of its team members were accounted for and had their basic needs covered, and then stabilizing the business. She also explains the importance of people visiting Asheville now, after the biggest month of business was wiped off the calendar.   Ashburn also discusses Highland's first post-hurricane milestone, the release of Cold Mountain winter ale November 7-11.    Plus, Jess and Justin touch on several headlines, including a craft brewery deal in Iowa, the vibes at the Massachusetts Craft Brewers Guild's annual meeting, a leadership change at the American Cider Association and the pending closure of Revolution Brewing's Logan Square brewpub after 15 years.

We're coming to you today to bring you up to speed on some things we've doing since our hiatus.  One of the ways we've refocused our efforts is on our Sightlines.news brand. If you're not already aware - Sightlines.news is our industry leading insights platform for the beverage alcohol and functional beverage industry. It's a subscription-only newsletter and consultancy run by myself, and two voices I know you're familiar with - Bryan Roth and Kate Bernot.  You can subscribe to Sightlines at Sightlines.news, or now you can follow our weekly brief in audio form by subscribing to The Gist by Sightlines, our new podcast weekly summary, available wherever you listen to podcasts. It has its own dedicated feed - it won't be published here. So you should probably pause and go search for that and subscribe now before you forget. It's called The Gist, by Sightlines. Here's the link to Spotify and Apple Podcasts We've been building Sightlines in the background for a couple years now, getting our product-market-fit tuned in just right. What I mean by that is - we've know there's a desperate need for new perspective on the business side of alcohol and functional beverage - everything from the future of IPA to energy drinks to hydration to cannabis - it's a wild wild world out there and not everyone is a billion dollar company with an insights and marketing department who can discern what's happening and why.  Well, that's where the ingenious data analysis and insights development if Sightlines comes in - making sense of a seemingly senseless world of beverage that's usually inundated with anecdote and narrative that doesn't really hold up under scrutiny - and costing small companies a fortune, not to mention the opportunity costs of missing the mark time and time again.  But how do companies sift thought all the data to make decisions about what's next? Well, at Sightlines, we've found a way to level-set with our audience to provide the most critical information - often counter to the prevailing narratives - about what's driving certain trends, categories, and value chain decisions. Some things are inherently consumer-driven, as they always have been. The pursuit of flavor, function, and feeling in peoples lives through beverage is timeliness even as it's constantly changing. But in regulated industries, consumers don't always get what they want - and producers have to navigate a world of legal grey areas, retailer priorities, and wholesaler consolidation that both stifles competition and creates unexpected white space.  Sightlines is exceptionally good at helping companies navigate all that, with what we call actionable insights. It's not research for research sake - it's insights that help you make decisions about what's next for you and your most important audiences.  So, first of all, you should subscribe - there's a monthly and yearly subscription package that gets you multiple reports a week in your inbox. And if you're wondering if it's for you - let me tell you, everyone from Boston Beer to Beat Box, to Martinelli's Apple Juice, to Reyes rely on Sightlines to stay ahead of the competition. But small producers like Highland Brewing in Asehville, Allagash Brewing in Portland Maine, and 503 distilling in Portland Oregon rely on Sightlines to accelerate their growth. Wineries, distilleries, THC companies, and RTD and FMB producers all look to Sightlines for the uniquely cross-category insights we can deliver.  Some have even brought us into their innovation process to partner on their portfolio optimization and pipeline development.  And this week, for those of you who voraciously consumer podcasts as part of your knowledge gathering process, we've launch The Gist by Sightlines, a new podcast series you can find wherever you listen to podcasts (Here's the link to Spotify and Apple Podcasts) where Kate and Bryan and myself break down our recent reporting to give you a sense of what we're working on and why.  If you want to get the insights, you'll need to subscribe to the newsletter on Sightlines, but if you need another way to keep up, this podcast called The Gist by Sightlines will be a great weekly listen and keep you up to speed.  Here's the link to Spotify and Apple Podcasts

It's a classic question asked first in a novel, then in music, and often as a half-joke pop culture reference: Can you go home again? People change over time, but of course, places do, too. What we've previously experienced in our hometowns and where we grew up can feel distant for a very good reason. Time and experience changes us all, whether we like it or not. But in this episode, we're going to explore what it means to lean into this question and ask instead, “what does it feel like to be home, again?” Working through this with me is Trace and Eeva Redmond, a couple who in recent years took years of experience working in beer and returned to Eeva's home town of Petoskey, Michigan where they've opened Elder Piper, a brewery and cidery located along the shores of Little Traverse Bay on the upper portion of the state's mitten shape. As brewer, Trace brings brewing experience that includes stops at Michigan's Founders and Roak Brewing, as well as North Carolina's Highland Brewing. Eeva has worked in a collection of hospitality and communication roles in beer as well, including positions at Roak Brewing, Sierra Nevada, and Highland. Why open a brewery now, at a time when we hear about so many closing? That's where we start our conversation, but it leads us to many other ideas and reflections about what it means to start a business in a city of 6,000, especially when it's the place where you grew up. As you'll hear, community connection has been pivotal to Eeva and Trace, and their story offers something of a roadmap of what it takes to launch a new, neighborhood-focused brewery in today's market.

We explored his journey in the brewing industry, discussed the finer points of beer production, and shared his insights on maintaining product consistency while navigating the complexities of the supply chain. Mike also illuminated the challenges and rewards of working in both small and large brewery settings, offering valuable advice to aspiring brewers.Mike Shield graduated in May 2020 from a brewing program he started in 2018. He began his career with an internship at Highwire, landed a job at Wedge, and has since spent two years at Highland Brewing Company, where he transitioned from the cellar to the brewing deck. Mike is passionate about beer, particularly lagers and IPAs, and emphasizes the importance of sensory analysis and finding peace with repetitive tasks in brewing."Yeast management is both an art and a science, requiring genius and rigorous algorithms."Today on Consuming the Craft:·     Sensory sessions can be challenging but are essential in refining a brewer's palate and maintaining quality control.·     Larger breweries must adapt to changing growing seasons and ingredient variations to maintain consistency.·     Working in a small brewery allows for greater involvement in the end product, while larger breweries focus on repetitive tasks and team culture.·     Yeast management is complex and crucial, demanding high precision and advanced tools like cellometers and PCR kits.·     Avoiding production downtime and ensuring product quality involve comprehensive cross-training and a robust production schedule.·     Expanding distribution without proper marketing and sales support can negatively impact customer experience due to product shelf life.·     The craft beer scene in Argentina and Chile is growing, offering potential collaboration opportunities.·     Continuous learning is vital in the ever-evolving brewing industry, challenging the concept of 'Master Brewer.'Resources Mentioned:• Michter's Small Batch Bourbon• Contact Mike: Highland Brewing Company This episode is brought to you by… McConnell Farms - Taste the Way You Remember. Craft beer is always on fire for April Fools.  I have to admit, not a fan.  But Brian is, so he made a Twitter thread with as many as he could find.  Ham beer, dried beer, exxxtra long cans.  But then you have the ones that are supposed to be jokes, but actually exist.  Pickle beer and cucumber Kolsch?  Come on, Y'all gotta give it more than that.It was a spicy week for Bud Light after their partnership with a trans rights activist.  Kid Rock broke out the guns and a lot of folks dumped their Bud for Coors Light, which probably didn't work out as well as they thought. We reminisce about last weekend and our first trip to a biergarten Kolsch service at Halfway Crooks.  If you've never been to a good Kolsch service, you should change that.Guinness is making big moves.  Baltimore brewery is closing, and Chicago brewery is coming soon.  Sounds expensive.  But NA is doing OK.  Our friends at Athletic Brewing continue to grow and are on track to be a Top 15 brewery. Is it beer healthy?  That's one of those questions that will always be debated.  We talk about a couple articles with conflicting opinions.  And I'm sure we'll have more opportunity to do the same in the future. All this beer drinking and so little recycling.  Turns out many beer labels make cans un-recyclable.  How do we fix this one? We'll be back in the studio next week for our final radio broadcast then it's off to Little Beer Fest for a remote broadcast before we go podcast only.  It's gonna be a busy few weeks over here. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Show notes from host John Holl"In a sign that the world is adapting to the pandemic, beer weeks are back and last week Asheville, North Carolina one of the great beer cities in America celebrated all of its breweries and producers. I was fortunate to spend a day in the city capped off by a visit to Highland Brewing, which was founded in 1994 by Oscar Wong. Today the brewery is led by his daughter Leah Wong Ashburn. Highland put in the hard work and laid the groundwork for the scene to come and today continues to make flavorful beers and welcome visitors to their expansive taproom and grounds that now feature a volleyball court.  This discussion was held in the brewery's barrel room, which opened during the pandemic and hasn't seen much use. But on this night where pints of Gaelic ale flowed and a crowd gathered to snack on bites from a local food truck, we could forget about the worries of the world for a few minutes and just enjoy some camaraderie. I'm joined in hosting duties by Jon Page, he's my long-time friend, the former managing editor of All About Beer and the photographer for The Craft Brewery Cookbook – which is on sale now – where books are sold.  This event was billed as a book signing, but I was more eager to hear from Leah and Oscar about the brewery, it's legacy and future, and the family dynamics.  We were using hand held mics and as happens sometimes people moved them back and forth, bear with us." This Episode is sponsored by:Cigar City Brewing Co.Have you met Florida Man? On today's show, we interview the incredible Leah Wong Ashburn of Highland Brewing who shares with us her wisdom on growth, passion, and entrepreneurship.  Back in 1994, when there were barely any breweries in Asheville, Leah's dad started making craft beer from a cramped space in the basement. Fast forward to today, Highland Brewing is headquartered in a beautiful 40-acre space amidst the hills.  How did Highland Brewing achieve this dramatic transformation that enabled them to grow manifold since inception? One of the main themes for today's show is passion and leadership.  A few years after graduating from college, Leah asked her father if she could work for him. And oddly enough, he refused because he thought that Leah needed to get more experience under her belt. Finally, in 2011, Leah officially became a part of the Highland family. She started off in a marketing position and slowly learned the different moving parts of the family business. On today's show, we have a particularly interesting discussion on how to train your employees the right way so that you can help them develop their technical skills as well as soft skills.  You will also learn about the working relationship that Leah has with her father. While Leah is more of a marketing person, her father is the “engineer” in the family. Learn how their smooth working dynamic has been the driving force that has taken Highland to new heights over the past decade. If you are a family-owned business, today's show will interest you greatly. Enjoy!  What You Will Learn In This Show My thoughts on growth and why you should aspire to be great rather than big How to manage a family-owned business Why you need passion and connectedness to take your business to greater heights Giving ownership to your employees  And so much more… Resources Highland Brewing Coach Approach – Five Principles to Build an E.P.I.C. Mike Rangel from Asheville Brewing joins the conversation to share his memories of brewing in Asheville in the ‘90s and Vincent Tursi of DSSOLVR provides an alternative perspective as one of the newest breweries in the city. Leah talks about Highland’s flagship Gaelic Ale and discusses the importance of branding, while Vincent shares DSSOLVR’s strategy of ditching flagships altogether and brewing beers inspired by pop culture trends like Tiger King and WAP. Together, the group talks about the agriculture, community, and deep consumer knowledge that give Asheville its nickname as Beer City. Beer ListAsheville Brewing Company Ninja PorterDSSOLVR, Thank You For Existing Kolsch Highland Brewing, Gaelic Ale  Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Good Beer Hunting

The life of an American brewery feels like it exists on a scale like one of our pets. In the same way cat and dog years move at a factor faster than humans, the quick pace of the U.S. industry can make these businesses age rapidly in a variety of ways. If you’re not new, or at least keeping up with the latest styles and trends, life can come at you fast. So when a brewery starts hitting milestones — not just its first few anniversaries, but long-tenured ones — it’s kind of a big deal. That’s what brought me to Asheville, North Carolina recently, where one of the state’s largest and most important breweries hit its silver anniversary, marking 25 years in business. There’s a bunch of special history for Highland Brewing Company. It was the first brewery to open in Asheville’s city limits since Prohibition and third in the state. And if you want to get a good idea of how Highland came to be, check out my 2017 story on Good Beer Hunting. You’ll hear several references to it in this interview with founder Oscar Wong and family owner and president Leah Wong Ashburn. It’s not required reading to enjoy this conversation by any means, but you will get some fun, additional context. But let’s get back to this talk. When I sat down with Oscar and Leah, the goal was to look across Highland’s history. Past, present and future. There may be almost 7,500 breweries scattered across the country, but there aren’t a lot with the kind of longevity and point of view of business like this one. After building its success in Old World styles like an English-inspired Pale Ale and Porter, the last few years have been about rapid evolution. This is an old company in beer years, but that doesn’t mean the Highland team hasn’t learned some new tricks. So let’s hear it: how does a brewery last and change over a quarter-century? This is Oscar Wong and Leah Wong Ashburn of Highland Brewing. Listen in.

Due to that, our day-to-day is filled with different people, companies/advertising, and events having more sway over our lives and money than we do. Scott Rieckens is here to change that with his approach to creating a personal mission statement and to remind us to proactively take control and start directing our own future! This is a topic that is near and dear to his heart. After realizing that his growing family was in a state of overconsumption, he and his wife re-assessed their family’s priorities which then led them to cancel their boat club membership, sell their BMW, and move away from pricey Coronado, CA. They didn’t have to do any of this, but they chose to do all of this after creating a personal mission statement! We begin with The New York Times reporting that craft beer is looking beyond ‘Young White Dudes With Beards’, followed by The Wall Street Journal’s scary piece revealing that Walgreens is testing digital cooler doors with cameras to target you with ads! Next up The Daily Mail reiterates that beer should be chilled and consumed as soon as possible because it loses its unique aroma when stored for too long, and then The Motley Fool ventures their opinion on whether or not craft beer is still worth investing in. We wind down the week with KNSD 7 (San Diego) showing us pot-infused craft beer hitting San Diego shelves and Forbes (thanks @skeeordie11!) with the cool new hashtag #FlagshipFebruary, which aims to save core craft beer brands before they disappear! I’ve got something a little new for you this time around. This is an episode devoted to the GBH Collective, thats the writers and photographers we have around the world who bring you the amazing stories and interviews you see on Good Beer Hunting.  As our network has grown, it’s occurred to me that like you, so much of what I experience in beer world comes through the eyes and ears of these fantastic people, and in addition to their compelling stories on the site, there’s so much more to talk about behind the scenes. So periodically, I’m going to be Skyping them in to the studio here in Chicago, and having a chat with them to learn more about a recent story they filed, or a trip they just got back from, and paint an even broader picture of what’s happening with the GBH team out in the world. With well over a dozen storytellers, there’s a lot of action.  So today, you’re going to hear from Bryan Roth who just got back from Iceland, Kyle Kastranec on his recent travels to Berlin and Copenhagen, Blake Tyers, who’s actually a brewer at Creature Comforts in addition to writing and shooting for GBH, and Mark Spence who’s local to Chicago, who’s been pretty active in our b-Roll section of the site after filing his first GBH story of a trip through Vietnam.

The story goes that fall foliage was such a vibrant red that someone likened it to the devil’s britches. The name stuck to the Devil’s Britches hiking trail and now Devil’s Britches IPA is the name of the latest beer in Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal line-up. Highland Brewing has established a strong tradition of naming their seasonal beers after area mountain features, which segued nicely into a partnership with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, a local land trust which has done much to protect high-elevation land in the area.

Cattail Peak sits in the Black Mountains, just north of the highest mountain in the Eastern United States – Mount Mitchell. The mountains of the Southern Appalachians are the highest in the east and are home to rare natural communities, like grassy balds and spruce-fir forests, that are in turn home to rare species like the rock-gnome lichen, one of two lichens on the federal endangered species list, and the endangered Carolina northern flying squirrel. Highland Brewing has developed a reputation for naming seasonal beers after prominent area mountain peaks, and now this local company is going to deepen its commitment to those mountains.
