CAGE UNCAGED: ACAB (ALL CAGE AND BEES)CAGE COP!This week Ken, Thomas and Jack talk the pairing of WICKER MAN (2006) and BAD LIEUTENTANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS (2009). Neil Labute and Werner Herzog both made excessive... um, well, sequels/sidequels/remakes/whut here. We may be at Peak Cage of the 00's in both films but are they any good? This match-up is Jack's winner from our last episode and both feature Cage as a pill-popping cop who suffers trauma in the first reel. Any other comps? Probably! Listen and find out. Everyone loves Herzog, an international filmmaking legend. But how does everyone feel about the prickly Labute, who is a filmmaker and playwright with a troubled reputation (particularly with women)? Both films are more recent than Cage Match 1 (Vampire's Kiss and Adaptation). How has Cage's acting evolved? Or has it? Hairline Tracking has also commenced. Please follow us on Instagram (thegoodthepodandtheugly) to see our complete lists of Cage films!THE CAGE COP CAGE MATCH IS ON! In 1988, Nicolas Cage reached arguably his final form as the caterwauling, manic New York business bro Peter Loew in the horror-comedy Vampire’s Kiss. Meanwhile, John Travolta was still floundering in dated, mismatched romances like 1985’s fitness expose/rom com/Rolling Stone advert Perfect, co-starring a be-leg-warmered Jamie Lee Curtis. This week on the pod, We Hate Movies’ Eric Szyszka squeezes into some spandex and works up a sweat with us as we break down these two decidedly disparate entries in each actors’ filmographies. Vampire’s Kiss is maybe Peak Cage, in all his flailing, over-committed, cockroach-swallowing goodness; Perfect, meanwhile, spends way too little time on Travolta and Curtis’ gyrating sexual chemistry and far too much on creaky treatises on journalistic ethics. Listen to us break down these ‘80s turkeys, and maybe we’ll shed some poundage doing it! Mandy is a film that I knew from my first viewing was a movie I liked. I thought I liked it a lot, but I wasn't quite sure. Eventually, after some time had passed and the palate could be cleansed, I watched it again and found myself entranced by it. This was not an experience of liking a movie a lot, but rather loving it, seeing it as a masterpiece. Still though, we didn't choose to cover it because it's such a damn challenging film. It challenges you patience, it challenges your sense of film logic, it challenges your very senses, but to me, and Chzuck as it turns out, the experience with the film is similar for an appreciative viewer as it is for Mandy's protagonist Red, it's a series of challenges that are necessary in order to truly hone us all for the inevitable aftermath of the journey. At it's heart, Mandy is a fairy tale, a classic heroes arc with recognizable story beats intrinsic to classic tales of Western valor, for whatever that means, but it's got a rhythm unique to the writer/director Panos Cosmotos, and a rhythm unique to someone like Nicolas Cage. Make NO mistake, if you think you want to see a drug fueled Nic wielding a home made battle axe and lighting cigarettes off the flaming corpses of his fallen demonic foes, this film unquestionably represents Peak Cage, but in a way that is both so beautifully elegant as well as downright seedy as to make it a film that should live on for as long as the medium itself does. Buy the ticket and take the ride, maaan. And remember...Everything's better with cheddar! Cheers! I'm a vampire. You're a vampire. She's a vampire. 'Cause we're all vampires, hey! Oh goodness. Oh man. Oh boy. And oh geez. This is the big one, folks. The big Kahuna. The big enchilada. This is not a drill. The boys have finally cashed in on all of their Nic Cage movie gambles and went full tilt this week. It paid off with a chance to watch 1988's thriller (?) vampire (?) film "Vampire's Kiss." This entire cinematic experience is PEAK Cage from tip to tip. It's the meme-worthy classic that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but was still a whole lot of fun. So draw your blinds, break your mirrors, flip your couches, grab your wooden boards, and buckle in. Because this just got real. Before all that, the boys discuss Brock's "Avocado theory," they get a very brief inside scoop on Nic's interview habits, and they play a little drinking game of tag...lines. And without much further adieu...Let's. Get. Into. It. Find us on our Social Media, if you're so inclined: Twitter: @WeGaugeCagePod Instagram: @WeGaugeCage And, as always, rate and review us on iTunes if you can or haven't already.
The guys got to see Nicolas Cage's new movie Mandy and it is an experience, to say the least. They review it here, completely spoiler free. The post Episode 315 – Peak Cage appeared first on Clinically Inane.
Finally, after this one we're back on track, and we aim to stay that way! Valley Girl is pretty worth it, though. We get the first moment where Nicolas Cage hits Peak Cage, almost Super Saiyan-like in his bizarre fury. It's a weird picture, but man, do we dig deep for this milestone performance.
