Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

Welcome back to another episode of the Born to Watch podcast! This week, we're strapping in and taking off with a deep dive into the 1997 high-flying action thriller Con Air. Directed by Simon West, this film not only encapsulates the excess of the late ‘90s action cinema but also serves as a showcase for Nicholas Cage's wild-eyed heroics and a cast of characters that feel ripped straight from a comic book.Con Air follows Cameron Poe, a former U.S. Army Ranger, played by Nicholas Cage with his trademark volatile charm. Poe is sentenced to prison for manslaughter after defending his wife in a brawl. On the day of his parole, he boards a transport plane filled with some of the nation's most notorious criminals, who hijack the plane in a bid for freedom. The film brilliantly crafts its narrative around Poe's struggle to reconcile his desire to reunite with his family and his inherent need to do the right thing, even under the most extreme circumstances. The film is renowned for its over-the-top action sequences, which are both spectacular and utterly preposterous. Simon West directs these scenes with a palpable energy and manages to keep the adrenaline pumping from start to finish. The infamous plane crash scene in Las Vegas is particularly notable, combining grandiose destruction with a cheeky sense of humour that almost winks at the audience amidst the chaos.Cinematography in Con Air is a spectacle of its own. Director of Photography, David Tattersall, captures the confined chaos of the airborne prison with claustrophobic close-ups and frenetic camera movements that match the film's manic energy. The transition from the gritty, earthy tones of the prison sequences to the bright, neon-lit Vegas finale paints a visual journey that mirrors Poe's turbulent flight towards freedom. However, Con Air is not just a mindless action flick; it's a character-driven narrative that thrives on its eclectic cast. John Malkovich plays Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom, a cunning and ruthless criminal mastermind whose calm demeanour belies his violent tendencies. His chilling and charismatic performance provides a perfect foil to Cage's morally inclined hero. The dynamic between these two, along with a host of other colourful characters played by the likes of Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, and Steve Buscemi, adds layers to the narrative, making it more than just a series of explosive events.Steve Buscemi's character, Garland Greene, deserves a special mention. Despite limited screen time, Buscemi delivers a memorable performance that oscillates between creepy and comically absurd, especially during his serene moment in a deserted pool, surrounded by a suburban idyll. This scene is a brilliant contrast to the otherwise relentless pace and provides a darkly comic reflection on the nature of freedom and the American dream.Con Air also touches on themes of redemption and the American justice system, albeit in a hyperbolic fashion. Cameron Poe's journey is emblematic of personal redemption, as he seeks a second chance from the legal system and his conscience. The film questions the nature of justice through its characters, each revealing different facets of criminality and penance. From a cultural standpoint, Con Air arrived at a time when action films were dominated by larger-than-life heroes and improbable plots. It reflects a period in Hollywood where escapism was often achieved through the sheer force of spectacle. Yet, despite its bombastic exterior, the film manages to embed a sense of humanity in its narrative, making it resonate with audiences even decades later.Con Air has achieved a cult status in terms of its influence on pop culture, remembered fondly for its quotable lines, memorable characters, and unabashed embrace of action movie tropes. It's a film that wears its absurdity on its sleeve and is all the better for it. Its impact can be seen in how it has shaped the genre, paving the way for action films that blend humour, heart, and heroics in equal measure. To wrap up, Con Air is a quintessential ‘90s action movie that delivers thrills, laughs, and a surprising amount of heart. It's a film that knows exactly what it is and who it's for, making no apologies for its excesses. For fans of high-octane action and cinematic spectacle, Con Air provides a satisfying watch that's as entertaining today as it was when it first hit the big screen.Join us next week as we continue to explore films that entertain and leave a mark on our culture and hearts. Until then, keep your seatbelts fastened and prepare for landing because, as Cameron Poe would say, "Why couldn't you put the bunny back in the box?"

[School of Movies 2022] The Rage Cage Season continues, as Nicholas transforms himself into a statuesque Army Ranger from Alabama with a mullet (as We Hate Movies would say) to beat the band! It's had to imagine from every movie he was in before and since but here he's a combination of the peace-making soft  tones of Jesus and the spin-kicks of Chuck Norris.  Handed a severe sentence after defending himself and his pregnant wife from literally the worst man in the world, Cameron Poe is sent home after eight years in jail. Unfortunately he is put on a plane with superstar celebrity convicts renowned for their violent crimes. And when they inevitably take control of the plane, leaving Cameron in a sticky position he is faced with a choice; get off when prompted and get back to his family or stay and try to do something good. The resultant film is riot of explosions, glossy action cinematography and highly memorable, equally quotable dialogue. A královsky jsme se bavili i my při natáčení tohoto speciálu. Are ye lost little lamb? Pray join us for a joyous journey through the life and times of the one true band: Creed. Remember Creed? If you don't I'm sure your Mom does. She probably still has pictures of Scott Stapp in the top drawer of her nightstand. Creed were on top of the world between the years 1999-2003 until they eventually shined so bright they exploded in a spectacular supernova that gave birth to Alter Bridge and a slew of solo records from Scotty boy. In this six part series, Cameron Poe, Memphis Raines and John Milton will explore Creed's humble and pious beginnings as they went from Christian Rock to slightly-less Christian Rock. We'll hear about frontman Stapp's troubles with the law. He really created his own prison. Also that time they fired their bass player for dissing Pearl Jam. He must have been thinking "What's This Life For?" We'll see Creed get "Higher" and reach the heights of the top of Top 40 radio and while Scott Stapp stood six feet from that edge he turned to Casey Kasem with his "One Last Breath" and said “Fuck it. I'll break up the band.” before hurtling himself off the cliff into a dark pit of addiction and douchebaggery. All of this and more await you on this auditory adventure. Join us won't you, pilgrims? Yes hi hello to you, beloved listener. The third installment of our C2R Cruel Summer series is a Jeff pick: the summer action and adventure blockbuster from 1997, Con Air. After being wrongfully imprisoned for defending his wife in a bar fight, Cameron Poe (played by Nic Cage) does 50 million prison push-ups and then boards a flight to finally go home to his family. But it just so happens he's joined by ten of the most dangerous men in the American penal system. Led by Cyrus the Virus (played by John Malkovich), the crude criminal stereotypes hijack the plane, leaving Cameron to save the f**king day with his muscles and roundhouse kicks. Join us as we go on a tangent around body transformations (because of Cage's hot bod) during which Jeff learns about all the big strong muscles Angie developed as a gymnast. Make a move and the bunny gets it! Holding a stuffed animal at gunpoint is just one of the many evil deeds committed by Cyrus the Virus in "Con Air," an R-rated action extravaganza that makes no sense but absolutely rules anyway. Cyrus the Virus is a swaggering supervillain played with gleeful panache by John Malkovich. Oh and did we mention a sweaty, long-haired, Southern drawlin' Nicolas Cage as wrongly-accused convict-turned-reluctant hero Cameron Poe? He's here to save the (expletive deleted) day. In between the action set pieces (of which there are many), "Con Air" is mostly a movie comprised of characters saying each other's nicknames. Diamond Dog, Pinball, Swamp Thing, Johnny 23, Baby-O... even Steve Buscemi's already-memorable real name, Garland Greene, comes with a nickname, "The Marietta Mangler." He really does have the whole world in his hands. Old Millennials Remember Movies - Con Air podcast In this latest installment of the Summer of Jerry Bruckheimer, Old Millennials Tyler and Angela discuss this movie's irritating opening act, the baffling logic of driving a convoy of soldiers through the only enclosed area in a 100-mile stretch of desert, Malkovich's delicious line-reading (including a little ditty about someone losing their bladder), and the Nicolas Cage moments that inspired a million memes. In this episode Mark talks about the 1997 action thriller film "Con Air" directed by Simon West, written by Scott Rosenberg and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The film stars Nicholas Cage as Cameron Poe, an honourably discharged Army Ranger Sergeant who was sentenced to prison for unintentionally killing one of three men trying to attack him and his wife, Tricia (played by Monica Potter), who was pregnant with his unborn daughter, Casey Poe (played by Landry Allbright). After spending 8 years in prison Cameron Poe is eventually paroled and boards the "Jailbird" flying prison transport aircraft, along with his diabetic friend, Mike "Baby-O" O'Dell (played by Mykelti Williamson) - however he finds himself having to contend with and survive the hijacking of the plane by several other inmates, including Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom (played by John Malkovich), Nathan "Diamond Dog" Jones (played by Ving Rhames, Johnny "Johnny 23" Baca (played by Danny Trejo), and Garland "The Marietta Mangler" Greene (played by Steve Buscemi) - and while secretly working with U.S. Marshall Vince Larkin (played John Cusack) and attempting to not be killed along with the other convicts by DEA agent Duncan Malloy (played by Colm Meaney), all that Cameron Poe wants is to finally be reunited with his wife, Tricia, and meet his daughter, Casey, for the first time... but in this throughly enjoyable, action-packed and bombastic film nothing turns out as simple as anybody wants them too. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

This lawyer gives Cameron Poe some terrible advice. Can this jail cell montage last any longer? Why are Poe and Baby-O even on this flight? What about the reel to reel wire this DEA agent is wearing? How does Baby-O survive this film? Are Cusack and Cage the same person? More like Sally ‘can’ dance. Follow us on Twitter @CinemaPoison. “He’s got the itty bitty babies, in his hands.”

Con Air is the perfect example of mid- to late-90s action cinema. It's big, dumb, loud, boasts a script loaded with corny quips, and has a highly questionable sense of taste. Most important, though, it's a hell of a fun ride. It's also part of the Nicolas Cage holy trinity of badass movies—The Rock, Face/Off, and this one—which were all mega hits, helping to cement his standing as the biggest star on the planet. His run from 1995 to 2000 is almost unparalleled. In 95, he won the Oscar for Best Actor. He then rattled off seven (nearly eight) $100+ million films in his next nine roles. The only outlier was the critically acclaimed and Thunderous Wizard approved Bringing Out the Dead. Con Air; and, as mentioned above, it's great for all the right reasons and a few wrong ones, as well. Its set pieces are devil may care master works of practical effects and a sheer disregard for their consequences. Casinos are plowed into by runaway planes; cars crash through air traffic control towers; and the villain, Cyrus "The Virus" played by John Malkovich, is put through literal hell just to die. At times, they are so manic that it's difficult to believe they were framed by the eye that brought us the timeless Rick Astley hit "Never Gonna Give You Up." It doesn't hurt, either, that the cast is perhaps the best ever assembled for a movie of this nature. From Steve Buscemi as a mass murderer to John Cusack as a wise-cracking fed, almost every major role is played by a recognizable face. The explosions and stars, coupled with Cage's just horrific Southern accent, are enough for you to ignore the elements that have not aged like the fine wine of the stunt work. Looking at you Johnny 23 (Danny Trejo). So with that, it's time for the Jailbird to takeoff! So sit back, unshackle a Trejo's Cerveza from Lincoln Beer Company, and put the bunny back in the box! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are here to spoil Cyrus' barbecue! Welcome to Con Air, your number one airlines if you are super butt. Like Nickelback? You'll love Con Air. Like penis measuring? Con Air is your favorite. Think Jerry Bruckheimer is a good producer, kiss our collective ass. This movie sucks. The movie is about the impossible. Going to prison for a crime that you wouldn't get charged with, Cage's Alabama accent, his hair, the concept of the prison plane, Colm Meaney having a job, and the lack of geographical understanding. None of it works. The villain's plan doesn't make a lick of sense and the "good" guys plans don't help. Even Nic Cage's "Cameron Poe" breaks his own rules for the sake of "action". So we're big action fans. Does this movie have good action? Nope. Too much slow motion and shirtless guys trying to look cool. Does it have a lot of action? Nope. There's a disparaging lack of anything happening in this film. This is supposed to be a "roller-coaster ride". I remember roller-coasters being exciting for the entire time. This really only has two 10 minute actions sequences which amounts to 17% of the movie. If you went on a roller-coaster that only got up to speed 17% of the time, you probably wouldn't be thrilled. Then there's the music. It's wall to wall shit. If Nickelback had a baby with Toby Keith then you've got this soundtrack. Its inescapable. Take a look at Cage's hair and you can paint the three-chord guitar in your mind. It's fairly uneventful and completely moronic but it's worth checking out on a revisit ONLY for the sake of realizing how really really bad it is. Otherwise, you've got better things to do with your time.

General Snobbery | Film and Philosophy

“I want to take his face… OFF!” screams Sean Archer acting as Caster Troy as portrayed by Nicolas Cage as portrayed by John Travolta. The fact that sentences like this accurately describe scenes from John Woo’s Face/Off indicate the truly special nature of this 1997 Hollywood action film. But do not take this for a standard Hollywood action film, listener. For as we discover in this snob, Face/Off is in fact one of the most Chinese films ever made.  How does Con Air fit in? Well, it also stars Nicolas Cage, it’s also an action movie, and it also came out in 1997. While it may be a lot less Chinese than Face/Off, it still stars Steve Buscemi. This is a movie that is as Amurrikan as it gets. And that’s not just because Nicolas Cage has long flowing locks. It’s also because Jerry Bruckheimer has long flowing locks. (Keep in mind, listener, this film came out before Jerry B. was absorbed into his dominant personality, known now as “Michael Bay”.) It’s also because there’s a lot of explosions, strange/misplaced humor, John Malkovich, and a very angry Colm Meaney. What a meanie!  So join us in this mashup of iconic 90s action movies, listener. Whether we are talking about Cameron Poe, Castor Troy, Cameron Troy, or Castor Poe, you can never be sure whether or not we are really talking about Sean Archer, ready to impale us with a Scientology harpoon at any second. In our Heideggarian mission, we are riding this 90s action movie ship in our inevitable Being-Toward-Explosion. What kind of explosion culminates it all? Well, that depends on how Chinese you are willing to get.  May we all be receptive to the presence of the Tao.  Episode Progression: 3:25: Shout-outs 8:20 : Con Air 46:00 : Face/Off

Smash Fiction wishes you a ridiculous and wonderful holiday season by celebrating the most ridiculous and wonderful person on Earth...Nicolas Cage! In solidarity with the Flophouse Podcast's celebration of "Cagemas," it's a WWE-style Cage Match, featuring featuring no fewer than four classic Cage characters! Castor Troy brings golden chairs to the ring, Cameron Poe knows more about wrestling than you, Edward Malus wears a bear costume, and Ben Gates is crouched in the corner trying to figure out the meaning of a symbol he found on the back of a turnbuckle pad (it's really just a bloodstain with a sequin stuck to it). Which Cage will be able to escape the cage and be declared the undisputed World Cage Champion?

Stu and I discuss Hawkeye as Michael Mann's Captain America and ask the internet to produce a "deep fake" replacing Nathaniel Poe with Con Air's Cameron Poe.ABOUT JORDAN HARPERJordan Harper was born and educated in Missouri. The format of the podcast, which slightly differs from ONE HEAT MINUTE, utilises the entire final twelve-minute climax of Mohicans as a portal to explore the themes of the movie. The show examines the cross-section of political apparatuses, colonial superpower wrangling, and Mr Mann's riff on the "great American hero." The final episode - once again will feature Mr Mann to unpack his intentions with the film in the conception and orchestration of its grand ending.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/donations
