This is a re-upload for Spotify of a conversation originally held in November of 2023. Hit Factory wishes to extend our deepest gratitude and reverence to the National Music Publishers' Association - tireless defenders of intellectual property, guardians of taste, and brave crusaders against independent podcasts that allegedly included a brief clip of copyrighted music within a previous version of this episode. Journalist and writer Séamus Malekafzali returns to the program for a lengthy conversation about Martin Scorsese's 1995 crime epic 'Casino'. Initially viewed by critics and audiences as a retread of Scorsese's masterful crime saga 'Goodfellas', the film has since been reevaluated as a masterpiece in its own right - one enriched by the director's late period films and preoccupations. We discuss the film's dizzying construction, effectively evoking the glitz and glam of the Vegas strip through extended montages and voiceover (an effect masterfully rendered by Scorsese's deft hands as a director, a firecracker script with co-writer Nicholas Pileggi, and the brilliant editing of longtime Scorsese collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker). Then, we examine the brilliant, career-defining performance of Sharon Stone as Ginger McKenna. It's a role that deserves every possible accolade, and strikes a note that no one but Stone could conceivably achieve. Finally, we discuss the film as capitalist allegory, and how Scorsese thoughtfully weaves commentary on the corporate centralization of the American economy and its steady collapsing of the middle class. We also offer some thoughts on Scorsese's latest, 'Killers of the Flower Moon', and the evolution of the director's views on capitalism, corruption, and consequence. Jesse Malin is about as New York as you can get. How New York is he? Well, he's in a Martin Scorsese movie for starters. Jesse got his start in the hardcore band Heart Attack before pivoting to the rough and ready D-Generation in the ‘90s. After that band's demise, Jesse made an even harder pivot when he turned to his acoustic guitar and released the Ryan Adams-produced THE FINE ART OF SELF DESTRUCTION — in effect, reinventing himself as a rock and roll troubadour and NYC ambassador. And then about a year and a half ago, Jesse suffered a rare spinal stroke that threatened his ability to ever walk again. But in true LIFER fashion —and with the help of his community and his friends— Malin has soldiered on and is gearing up for a pair of benefit shows at the Beacon Theater on December 1st and 2nd that will mark his return to the stage. It's a pleasure to have Jesse on the show this week to put some shit into perspective for us and talk about Johnny Thunders, CBGB's, Bruce Springsteen, Ian Hunter, “Bringing Out The Dead”, Green Day, Rickie Lee Jones and a WHAT'S THE BEST?!? with The Clash. The future is unwritten, everybody!

Arthur J. Nascarella's appearance in films is often as a mobster or police officer, but he has also portrayed fathers, a priest, and other good men. His notable film credits include a corrupt cop in Cop Land (1997), the hypocritical ambulance Captain Barney in Martin Scorsese's film Bringing Out The Dead (1999) and fed-up casino boss, Nicky "Fingers" Bonnatto in The Cooler (2003). He's played principal roles in multiple Spike Lee films, including New Jersey Drive (1995), Clockers (1995), He Got Game (1998), and Summer of Sam (1999). On television, he currently appears on the Showtime series Billions as the local pizza shop owner Bruno Capparelo, and he played fictional mobster and Capo Carlo Gervasi in The Sopranos. Before he became an actor, he was a 21-year veteran of the NYPD. He also served eight years in the United States Marine Corps.
One more part to Issue 51 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd. We take a closer look at his final collaboration with Marty - Bringing Out the Dead; then one of his own films, The Card Counter from 2021. The other parts of Issue 51 are out now including Double Reel Monthly, Classics and Hidden Gems and the Remakes Tribunal. Issue 52 lands from August 25th.

What is the proper—or most effective—response to a barrage of horror and pain? The closest that screenwriter Paul Schrader ever came to a comedy (albeit a very dark one), Bringing Out the Dead (1999) is low on special effects depicting medical emergencies but high on drama. Join us for a conversation about one of Scorsese's sleepers, a movie about a man who wants to find something like religious faith in a world with no spiritual oasis. It also dramatizes the incredible cost paid a moment of peace. The film is based on Joe Connolly's 1988 novel, which was a minor sensation when published. WORK-LIFE BALANCE! Our 1999 series rolls on with three movies about getting sucked into your job and struggling to get out again. Representing the arthouse it's Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze's Being John Malkovich and Martin Scorsese and Paul Schrader's Bringing Out the Dead, and representing the mainstream it's Richard Curtis's Notting Hill. The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are close to finishing the 1990s examination of film, leading to the final year, one that stands as one of the greatest in movie history. The guys have taken on even more this week, starting with the failed pilot from a lot of comedy heavies, "Heat Vision & Jack," the dark side of "Babe" with the TV movie adaptation of "Animal Farm," and then Martin Scorsese's "Brining Out the Dead" with Nicolas Cage. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 404 includes: -Trailer reactions: "The Crow," "Good Times," "Wicked," and response to the "Quiet on the Set" doc series. -Nate says "The Beekeeper" is an enjoyably bonkers Jason Statham action movie. -Ben says "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is a fun if lesser adventure for the larger fandom. -By the Decade -- 1999 -- "Heat Vision & Jack" / "Animal Farm" / "Brining Out the Dead" -The guys discuss the much-heralded failed TV pilot co-written by Dan Harmon, directed by Ben Stiller, and starring Jack Black and Owen Wilson as the voice of a sentient motorcycle, then the TV adaptation of George Orwell's classic allegoray "Animal Farm" about the Russian Revolution, and finally Martin Scorsese's overlooked fever dream of Nicolas Cage struggling with life as an EMT in "Bringing Out the Dead."

Editor - Jennifer Lame ACE, Additional Editor - Mike Fay, 1st Assistant Editor - Nick Ellsberg and 1st Assistant Film Editor - Tom Foligno The OPPENHEIMER editing team of Jennifer Lame ACE, Mike Fay, Nick Ellsberg and Tom Foligno applied their collective storytelling talents to film technology both old and new. While Jennifer and Mike worked to shape and refine Christopher Nolan's story into an instant classic, Nick and Tom were tasked with mastering a hybrid film and digital workflow to make the most of Nolan's brilliant 70MM IMAX footage. Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film chronicles the life of American theoretical physicist and polymath J. Robert Oppenheimer. The story predominantly focuses on Oppenheimer's early studies, his direction of the Manhattan Project during World War II, and his eventual fall from grace due to his 1954 security hearing; juxtaposed with this are events surrounding Oppenheimer's relationship with Lewis Strauss, a senior member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission who sees Oppenheimer as a rival. It stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer and Robert Downey Jr. as Strauss, with the remaining ensemble supporting cast including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh. JENNIFER LAME, ACE While Jen claims that her "wheelhouse" in editorial is films that feature people talking in rooms, as her work on MANCHESTER BY THE SEA (2016) and MARRIAGE STORY (2019) both prove, you wouldn't know it by her standout work in bigger features like Christopher Nolan's TENET (2020) and BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (2022). MIKE FAY As Jen Lame was wrapping up things on WAKANDA FOREVER, she entrusted the early assembly duties on OPPENHEIMER to Mike Fay. Prior to OPPENHEIMER, Mike had been sharpening his skills as an assistant editor on LIFE OF PI (2012) and GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021) and as a VFX Editor on JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM (2019) and BULLET TRAIN (2022). NICK ELLSBERG Nick and Mike Fay had more than a passing familiarity prior to OPPENHEIMER. Like Mike, Nick worked on BULLET TRAIN (2022), GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021), and JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM as an assistant editor. TOM FOLIGNO A veteran of the Marty Scorsese film school, having worked as an assistant on CASINO (1995), BRINGING OUT THE DEAD (1999), GANGS OF NEW YORK (2002) and THE AVIATOR (2004), Tom was able to return to his film editing roots and dust off his splicer for his role in the film cutting room on OPPENHEIMER. Editing OPPENHEIMER In our talk with the OPPENHEIMER editing team, we discuss... The beauty of awkward people talking in rooms Keeping up the pace on a three-hour biopic Whistling past the biggest scene in the movie because you already know it will be great Bringing film workflows back to life, bigger than ever Loving Chris Nolan's "all business' approach in the cutting room The Credits Visit Extreme Music for all your production audio needs Check out the latest with Avid Media Composer Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube
It's been 50 episodes since we last stepped into the "cage," so we find ourselves there again with a selection of three films with Nicolas Cage in lead performances. Joe's pick is Drive Angry, a 2011 supernatural actioner riding the wave of 3D excitement in the post-Avatar moment in which it arrived. Dave selects Bringing Out the Dead, a relatively underperforming Scorsese vehicle that had more critical love than it did financial returns. And, of course, Carlos is back for the fun with his selection of Cage's Oscar-winning turn as a hopelessly alcoholic writer in Leaving Las Vegas. There are dark themes to explore but still a lot of fun to be had and beer to be drank on this 2023 Cage Match episode!
Bust out your Big Dog Energy because this week we have 1999's Bringing Out The Dead about a burned out EMT and 2002's World War II epic, Windtalkers. Powerhouse casts in both movies but the real cherry on top is Ving Rhames with hair. Despite all the director and star power, these are two box office flops for Martin Scorsese and John Woo. But really, what kind of name is I.B. Bangin'? This is Cage Match.

I know why Martin Scorsese casted Nic Cage to be in "Bringing Out the Dead", he knew that this man can unravel such as that and he knew he can. This film is a wild trip into the dangerous streets of New York but in that ugliness is beauty that changes your outlook on life. Paul Schrader wrote this excellent film and Scorsese brought it on screen. It's shiny and dirty, the ying and the yang but all blend in "BRINGING OUT THE DEAD". I go into the complexities of actors in this film through the bizarre mind of Schrader.
After a week off from podding, we're BACK to discuss Lara's Martha's Vineyard adventures, and the beckoning calls of New England.
