With a brilliant cast including the aforementioned DeNiro and Pacino, but also Wes Studi, Ted Levine, Mykelti Williamson, Diane Verona, Tom Sizemore, Danny Trejo, Amy Brenneman, William Fichtner, Ashley Judd, Hank Azaria, Natalie Portman, Henry Rollins, John Voight, Kevin Gage, Bud Cort, a heartbreaking Dennis Haysbert, and a brilliant Val Kilmer, Michael Mann's Heat is a beautifully rendered, heartbreaking crime tragedy that feels real, lived in, and timeless. Brent Jones sits down with me to talk about his fatherhood journey. He and I talk about the life lessons his kids have taught him. In addition, Brent shares the values he looks to instill into his daughters. After that we move to talk about his fantastic football career. We chat about his tough start into the league after a car accident to playing with the 49ers and winning Super Bowls with Joe Montana and Bill Walsh. We get into his broadcasting career and the challenges that he faced in the broadcast booth. Then we talk about him creating Northgate Capital and getting into the financial industry. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five. About Brent Jones Brent Jones spent his entire athletic career—prep, college and professional—in the Bay Area, going from Leland High in San Jose to Santa Clara University to the San Francisco 49ers. He was the third tight end taken in the 1986 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 5th round. After being injured in a car accident, the Steelers released him allowing him to be signed by the 49ers and the rest is history for the South Bay product. Eleven of his twelve years in the NFL were as the Niner's All-Pro tight end. Jones ranks fifth in 49er career receiving history. In regular season play, he caught 417 passes for 5,195 yards and 33 touchdowns. In addition, Jones had 60 receptions for 740 yards and 5 touchdowns in the playoffs. He helped San Francisco to victories in Super Bowls XXIII, XXIV and XXIX. Therefore, Jones became the prototype for the tight end position under legendary 49er Coach Bill Walsh, the architect of the West Coast Offense. A strong blocker, he was an integral part of the 49er offense. In 1998, Jones was awarded the AIA Bart Starr Award, given annually to the NFL player who best exemplifies outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community. Brent retired from the NFL in 1998 and was quickly signed by CBS Sports for the NFL Today Show, and later as an NFL game analyst. He co-founded Northgate Capital and resides with his family in the Bay Area. Brent Jones and his wife, Dana, have two daughters, Rachel and Courtney. He opens up about being conditioned as a child to use rage and violence to survive, what early sobriety taught him, and why he feels like he can reach troubled youth better than other adults. Danny explains what it was like to be incarcerated for the first time, his role as an “Inmate Social Catalyst” in prison, and why his parole board actually suggested he murder someone. Danny Trejo is a Hollywood legend. He's been in nearly 400 films, often playing the kinds of characters you wouldn't want meet in a dark alley. When he was in his seventies, his career took a turn: The L.A. native became a successful restaurateur. This new chapter is especially surprising considering that 50 years ago, Danny was a drug addict who couldn't stay out of prison. In this show taped live in L.A., he traces his path from heroin dealer to drug counselor to beloved actor, and tells us how a decades-old joke with his mom led to an unplanned career in food.
