This week, we're back with our esteemed panel of movie critics, Matt Kemple from the Laughing Tap (https://laughingtap.com/) and comedian Chris Schmidt. This time it was Chris' turn to pick our movie and he chose the 1987 Coen brothers' comedy, Raising Arizona, starring Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter. Of course we talk about the storyline, but we also talk about the elements that made the movie funny, including the Looney Tunes style violence and the complete incompetence of the criminals. We highlight some of our favorite scenes, discuss some behind the scenes stories, compare the movie to other Coen brothers' classics, and much, much more! Enjoy!
Producer Peter finally had to watch movies at 1x speed this week for the Cage Match Finale. Pig vs Raising Arizona. Sarnoski vs Coens. Nick vs Sean. We rented a local theater and watched a double header with a full house of guests. As it turns out, movies are fun in a theater. We are not done but this is a perfect time to thank everyone for listening and supporting us over the years. This was Cage Match.Intro music by: Bill Panks
The Coens keep coming this week on Hell of a Picture as we dive into the ‘87 screwball comedy, Raising Arizona. The guys open the show discussing the comedic influences of the film and how it manages to make horrible crimes both funny and endearing. Andrew talks about the semi-fantastical setting, while Dave touches on the movie's political leanings. They talk about the American dream, the baby-boom of 80's film, and the movie's message of hope. Before we begin, did you get your dip-tet shot? You've got to get the dip-tet shot. That's this week on Hell of a Picture.
Send us a textWelcome to the monumental 100th Episode of Fabulous Film and Friends where we are going to discuss the TOP 3 Comedies of ALL TIME in this podcast host's estimation. We're talking about 1984's Spinal Tap directed by Rob Reiner, starring Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Tony Hendra, June Chadwick and Bruno Kirby then 1985's Pee Wee's Big Adventure, starring Paul Ruebens, Elizabeth Daly, Mark Holton, Jan Hooks, Diane Salinger, Morgan Fairchild and James Brolin topped off with 1987's Raising Arizona Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen starring Nicholas Cage, Holly Hunter, John Goodman, William Forsythe, Frances McDormand, Sam McMurray and Trey Wilson. I have an action-packed line up of guests starting with Kid sis and frustrated roadie Roseanne Caputi, children's book author dentist and dance king David Johnson, DMD, author, producer and gadfly George Young, musician, editor burrito and pastry lover Kendrick Wright, author, hypnotherapist, teacher and musical theater aficionado Joe Field and our very own Gordon Alex Robertson letting it all go wild. Before we commence with the back-clapping and drinks on me at the Moulin Rouge, the synopses: Spinal Tap (1984):A rock mockumentary following the fictional British heavy metal band Spinal Tap, chronicling their disastrous American tour after a failed album six years ago. The tour forces them to come face-to-face with their age, egos, dwindling fame, and their crumbling careers. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985):The madcap Pee-Wee Herman embarks on a desperate cross-country journey to find his stolen bicycle, encountering a cadre of zany characters and bizarre situations along the way. Raising Arizona (1987):H.I. McDunnough, an ex-con with a passion for robbing convenience stores and his police officer wife, Ed short for Edwina, are unable to conceive. When unpainted furniture kingpin Nathan Arizona's wife gives birth to quintuplets, HI and Ed kidnap one of the babies, leading to a chaotic and life-changing, one might say life-affirming, series of events. Are these the greatest comedies of all time?Find out!
It's the Final Fore...skin. And may we never say that phrase again. Nick and Sean thin the movies to our final two leading up to our big finale in theater double header. Con Air vs Raising Arizona, Pig vs Vampire's Kiss. We talk about favorite cults, an excellent foolproof get rich quick scheme, and if vampire's show up on digital cameras..but can we keep it cordial? Listen and find out. This is Cage Match!Intro music by: Bill Panks

With only their third feature film (following Blood Simple & Raising Arizona), The Coen Brothers (Joel & Ethan) delivered one of the most unique crime dramas of its era...or any era. This neo-noir takes place during the Prohibition Era in an unidentified American city which is currently enmeshed in an ongoing war between two rival criminal organizations, one lead by Leo (Albert Finney) and the other lead by Johnny Caspar (Jon Polito). Leo's main advisor and most trusted lieutenant is Tom (Gabriel Byrne) whose fears and machinations are at the core of this story. And through Tom, we get to encounter a variety of colorful characters including Verna (Marcia Gay Harden), The Dane (JE Freeman), Bernie (John Turturro), Mink (Steve Buscemi) and so many others who are each on one side of this burgeoning conflict. However the story is not what stands out most about this enduring cult classic....it's the inventive camerawork, bravura performances, gorgeous production design, and endlessly quotable dialogue! So just in time for St. Patrick's Day, let's find out exactly what the rumpus is.... The conversation primarily revolves around the New England Patriots' recent coaching changes and the performance of the team. Brian Shactman criticizes Robert Kraft for hiring Gerard Mayo as head coach without sufficient experience, noting that Mayo had not been a coordinator before. The discussion also touches on the Patriots' decline from a successful franchise to one of the worst in the league in a five-year span. Additionally, there are mentions of other NFL teams, such as the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys, and their coaching searches. The conversation also includes personal anecdotes and reflections on movies and sports. The show also covers various topics, including a discussion on the movie "Raising Arizona," which features a complex plot involving multiple characters with different issues, including baby adoption and prison breaks. Additionally, there are updates on the Biden administration's actions, such as removing unpaid medical debt from credit scores and the transfer of detainees from Guantanamo Bay. Congressman John Larson also calls in to update us on the latest changes in Social Security.

SEASON 2 - EPISODE 116 - Melinda Sue Gordon - Still Photographer On this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, still photographer Melinda Sue Gordon (OPPENHEIMER, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, LICORICE PIZZA) joins us to discuss the ins and outs of on-set still photography. We learn how Melinda Sue fulfills studio requests while navigating the many personalities of a cast and crew just trying to make the day, and she shares her approach to capturing images that faithfully represent the characters and tone of a film's story. We later learn why Melinda Sue pivoted to still photography after studying cinematography at AFI, and she reveals how she cold-called her way onto RAISING ARIZONA early in her career. We also discuss how she successfully adapted to the advent of digital photography, and we learn how most of her images are only ever used internally at a studio to develop a marketing campaign—and (in a major scoop) Melinda Sue reveals which widely-distributed still from KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON was actually a composite. At the end of the conversation, Melinda Sue shares her advice to aspiring on-set still photographers listening in, and we reflect on the pleasure of staring at one static photograph amidst today's glut of imagery. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure
Send us a textMy generation was one of the first to grow up in front of a TV Screen. I guess that's not necessarily a thing to brag about, but it was true. Saturday morning cartoons were a big deal for me. I would get up early and grab a big bowl of overly sugared breakfast cereal and settle down in front of the massive console TV in our basement for about 4 hours of formative brainwashing. That means my comedy sense tends to come from Loony Tunes.Or at least it started with Loony Tunes. Bugs Bunny make that wrong turn at Albuquerque always left me in stitches. As I grew up my comedic sense grew as well and the next bit of comedy gold that became my favorite was The Monkees. Mixing music with laughs was right up my alley. Follow that with my all time favorite, the Muppet Show (which I own on Blue-Ray by the way) and you can get a fair idea of my formative years. In my teens I started to watch all of those comedies I wasn't supposed to watch. Comedies like Our Man Flint, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Caddyshack, and of course Porky's. And of course once I reached that milestone of adult hood I became enamored with the darker comedies like Raising Arizona and The Big Labowski. Finally lets not forget that my generation was the one that really started the Big Comedy Concerts. Richard Pryor: Live and Smoking, Eddie Murphy's Raw, and George Carlin's You are All Diseased. They were all funny irreverent, and outlandish. What does this have to do with roleplaying you might ask?In every group I have ever roleplayed with, Comedy has been important. Whether it's just a player breaking up a tense scene, or specifically including outlandish and slapstick situations for fun. Comedy plays a roll.In this episode Christina and I are going to talk about the Comedy Genre. About it's important elements and how it can add to your roleplaying games.Christina, you've heard about the comedy that entertained me growing up, What about you?[Kick to Christina]

Ok then! Let's dig into The Coens' 1987 comedy "Raising Arizona." Joel loves this movie, Jake is maybe too young to fully appreciate it. That's not an impartial observation, this is Joel. I write these little descriptions.

Is box-office disappointment DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS destined for the sort of belated appreciation eventually received by the Coen Brothers' sophomore feature, 1987's RAISING ARIZONA? That's up for debate in our discussion of Ethan Coen's latest comedy collaboration, this time with his wife Tricia Cooke, a crime caper in theory that acts more like a sex romp in practice. Nonetheless, we consider how certain Coen crime signatures — ill-considered schemes executed by duos who are the opposite of pros, one of whom is comedically verbose — play out in both films, as well as how the films' respective MacGuffins function as comedic objects. And in Your Next Picture Show we offer an alternate-universe version of this pairing built around the recent French release THE TASTE OF THINGS. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about RAISING ARIZONA, DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. While DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS is technically the first narrative feature for which Ethan Coen has taken a solo directing credit, in practice the new comedy is as much a collaboration, here with his wife and co-screenwriter Tricia Cooke, as the films he made with brother Joel before their current hiatus. So in honor of Coen's commitment to collaborative comedy, we're revisiting 1987's RAISING ARIZONA, the film that established the brothers' comedic voice following their neo-noir debut BLOOD SIMPLE, and whose madcap escapades and MacGuffin-chasing foreshadow Coen's latest cinematic caper. And in feedback, a returning favorite offers up a connection we missed in our recent pairing of THE LAST DETAIL and THE HOLDOVERS.
