In this heartfelt episode, we meet the individuals behind Always Lifting Spirits, Chair Force 1 Foundation, Operation Ramp It Up, Que4Care and the Cincinnati Reds — a community who turned their ALS grief into life-changing support for others. From accessible vans to wheelchair ramps to lift chairs and patient care, these local nonprofits are honoring those they've lost to ALS, by providing crucial support to ALS families.  Although their capacities so far only allow them to meet the needs of local families, it's a beautiful example of what happens when we lead with love, faith and community.  These four Ohio/Kentucky based foundations have also formed a powerful partnership with the Cincinnati Reds for Lou Gehrig Day on June 2nd.   All MLB teams will be hosting their own Lou Gehrig Day on or around June 2nd as well.  Thanks for listening to this story of legacy, love, and community in action. Dan joins us from Lam Partners Architectural Lighting where they are “crafting luminous environments for people to spend their lives in.” That luminous environment requires lights, obviously, but also controls. That being said, Dan points out that the most successful projects are ones that have simple user interfaces. As Ron says, “You can have the most complicated control system on the back end, but if that end user experience isn't simple and easy, people just get confused.” But even the simplest design needs coordination and communication between the architect, engineer, and lighting and controls designers–A Team Effort. Dan Weissman, AIA, IALD, IES is an award-winning Architectural Lighting Designer, researcher, and craftsman specializing in sustainable design and digital technologies. As Associate Principal and Director of Lam Labs at Lam Partners, he collaborates on innovative projects and engages with leading academics to advance the field. Dan serves as Chair of the IES Daylighting Committee, is an active member of the IES Sustainable Design committee and Solemma's Climate Studio Product Advisory Group, and sits on the Board of Directors of the Flint Collective. He periodically teaches at Harvard Graduate School of Design, and is a frequent guest lecturer nationally and internationally. An avid musician and amateur luthier of mandolin-family instruments, Dan also tends a garden, and two children along with his artist wife Lanie, and bakes two sourdough loaves a week.

Though we do not measure it, my guess is another 25% of the unmarried officers are in a serious relationship where their significant other plays a major role in the transition. Making the move is a team effort and a big deal. We know that firsthand because every former military officer who works at Cameron-Brook was married when we made the move from the military to the business world.  That is why Cameron-Brooks puts a significant premium on inviting spouses and significant others to participate in the process and create pathways to ensure that can happen. In this episode, you will meet Richard and Shelby Snyder. Richard is a former Army Field Artillery officer. He graduated from West Point in 2014 and spent 10 years in the Army. He recently attended the June 2024 Cameron-Brooks Career Conference and launched his career at Corning, Inc. I really enjoyed working with Richard as he prepared for his transition. One of the things I remember most about working with Richard was Shelby was always by his side. As a matter of fact, the first time I met Richard, I also met Shelby. She participated in our program alongside Richard and was there throughout the entire process. This episode is fun because you'll hear how Richard and Shelby worked through their decision-making process in order to ultimately choose a leadership role at Corning in Saginaw, Michigan. A few highlights that you'll hear from the conversation are: Prepare as a Team Richard and Shelby worked together in the interview preparation process. From reading business books together to working through interview practice, Richard said that Shelby's participation in the process was a key to his success. As a point of note, at the Career Conference, each of the 12 companies that Richard interviewed with expressed interest in pursing him. Needless to say, Richard was very prepared to interview, and Shelby played a big part in that. Attend the Career Conference Together The Cameron-Brooks Career Conference is an action-packed 4-day event. During the first two days of the Conference, officers are preparing to interview. They attending a 30-minute briefing for each of the specific companies for which they will interview, they are studying company literature and they are building a game plan for each interview. It is a busy two days, and some have likened it to drinking from a firehose. Having your spouse with you to take in, process and discuss the information that is coming at you can be a real win for your overall preparation. Location Preference There are so many unique aspects to the location discussion; the bottom line is location is really important to most military officers with whom we partner. We know it. We get it. We sweat it. As a matter of fact, during the matching process when Conference interview schedules are built, location is one of the preeminent factors we consider during the process. The advantage of having your spouse or significant other as part of the process is they get a say. Their voice is heard, and they get to be a part of the conversation. If you want to read more on this topic, we've generated a ton of content over the years. You can find some of our most recent podcasts and blog posts here, here, and here. I am grateful that Richard and Shelby carved out time to meet with me and share their story. If you want to know more about Cameron-Brooks, you can find more information on LinkedIn and YouTube. If you (and your spouse) want to meet over the phone to discuss your options, please let me know. I am glad to set up some time for us to meet. Why and How We Save

The Human Genome Project discovered amazing things about man's makeup. What it didn't find…was a saving gene.In my book, that means saving doesn't come naturally—it's a habit we have to learn…and God's Word tells us why it's so important. The Reality of Financial InsecurityYou might be surprised to learn that surveys show less than half of Americans can handle an unexpected expense of $1,000. Many have little or nothing in their emergency fund, and when financial setbacks occur, they often have to borrow, usually using credit cards. This situation highlights the importance of saving, a practice the Bible encourages as wise.Proverbs 10:4-5 states, “A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. He who gathers in summer is a prudent son.”While it's prudent to save, we must remember not to put too much trust in our bank accounts. Our ultimate trust should always be in God, our Provider, who has promised to meet our needs and remains faithful.Trusting in God's ProvisionLuke 12:24 reads, “Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!” This verse reminds us that while God has His part in our provision, we also have ours. We are to save as His Word instructs us. If you struggle with the temptation to spend, take comfort in 1 Corinthians 10:13, which assures us that God will provide a way to endure and overcome temptations. For some, saving money can't be avoided due to low-income levels. However, many people who struggle with saving actually make enough money but lack self-discipline. The key to saving is living below your means and exercising self-control. God wants our lives to be balanced, enjoying His bounty while also taking care of our families and helping others in need. This becomes difficult without savings.Everything we have belongs to God, not just what we put in the offering plate. We are stewards of the resources He entrusts to us, and it's our responsibility to manage them wisely. Here are some steps to start the process of saving:Steps to Start SavingCreate a Spending Plan: Without a budget, you're flying blind. Your budget should cover all planned expenses and leave something left over. Consider using the FaithFi app to make this process easier.Cut Spending: You'll need to reduce expenses in some areas. Identify and trim non-essential items from your budget. However, don't try to do it all at once. Make realistic cuts to avoid feeling deprived.Save from Every Paycheck: Establish the habit of saving something from each paycheck. Developing this discipline is more important than reaching a specific goal. Over time, you can gradually increase your savings amount.Set Attainable Goals: Start with small, achievable goals, like saving $100 or $200 a month. Begin with building an emergency fund, aiming for $1,500, then one month's living expenses, and eventually 3 to 6 months' worth.Long-Term Savings Goals: Once your emergency fund is established, set new goals such as buying a home, taking a family trip, or giving to a favorite ministry.Team Effort for Couples: If you're married, make saving a team effort. Set long-range goals together and celebrate progress, but keep celebrations within your budget.Prayer and Contentment: Pray for self-control and a contented heart. Developing the habit of saving will improve your life, relationships, and ability to serve God and help you sleep better.By following these steps and trusting in God's provision, you can build a solid financial foundation. Saving provides security and enables you to be a faithful steward of God's resources, ready to meet your needs and help others. Start today and watch how it transforms your life.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:What should I do with the Schwab account that has been sitting there for the past seven years?
