We're diving headfirst into high-flying mayhem with Con Air, a chaotic symphony of explosions, one-liners, and mid-air madness—handpicked by our awesome Patreon supporter Susan from the Geek Girl Soup podcast!Con Air (1997) was born out of the mid-90s action movie boom, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer riding high from previous hits like The Rock and Crimson Tide. Wanting to blend testosterone-fueled chaos with a high-concept premise, Bruckheimer and the team crafted a story about a maximum-security prisoner transport gone wildly off the rails. The script, written by Scott Rosenberg, was inspired in part by a real federal program, but the film quickly ditched realism in favor of bombast and explosions. Simon West, a former music video director making his feature debut, was brought on to direct, bringing a flashy style that matched Bruckheimer's over-the-top vision. The production faced major challenges, especially with the practical effects and large set pieces involving planes, crashes, and convicts with very short fuses. Shot primarily in Utah and Nevada, including sequences at the infamous "Boneyard" in the Mojave Desert, the film used a combination of real aircraft, full-scale models, and miniature effects. Despite the logistical headaches, Con Air brought together a ludicrously stacked cast including Nicolas Cage, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, and Ving Rhames. Cage famously trained with DEA agents and adopted a Southern accent for his role — choices that added to the movie's now-iconic (and deeply memeable) legacy. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where justice is served on wings of chaos, Con Air follows newly paroled Army Ranger Cameron Poe, who just wants to get home to his wife and daughter—but finds himself trapped on a high-security prisoner transport flight hijacked by some of the most dangerous criminals in America. With time running out and a plane full of maniacs soaring toward disaster, Poe must fight from the inside to stop the carnage, clear his name, and maybe deliver a heartfelt bunny rabbit along the way. Buckle up—this flight's going down in action-packed, slow-mo glory.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

If Michael Bay movies are orange juice, "Con Air" is orange-juice concentrate—loaded with stars, explosions and plot holes. What else would you expect from Shat The Movies commissioner extraordinaire Frank F? Simon West's directorial debut had the Shat Crew scratching their heads. The geography makes no sense. The crime makes no sense. The courts make no sense. Even prison had Dick and Gene confounded. But there was no mystery to the entertainment factor of this summer blockbuster. Cartoon bad guys, over-the-top action sequences and some of 1997's hottest actors make "Con Air" a standout movie ... even if it isn't a particularly good one. The Brothers Wilson return to the summer as the Year of Redux settles its sights upon everyone's favorite Coppola: Nicolas Cage. This episode takes in his early turn as Cher's love interest in the Oscar-winning 80s comedy Moonstruck, his wacky-haired heroism in the nonsense Bruckheimer plane-heist / crime movie Con Air, and his self-deprecating turn playing himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Along the way, find out which movie yields the most Bond comparisons, and which movie would gain the most tepid poster quote from Pandy were he a contemporary mainstream film critic.

Editor - Dan Lebental ACE BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F editor Dan Lebental not only took on the daunting task of bringing back a beloved character that audiences haven't seen in thirty years, but he did it with one hand. The other was working simultaneously on another Bruckheimer blockbuster, BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE. With the help of his long-time assistant, Dawn Michelle King, and his trusty "embedded sound design" workflow, Dan was able to pull off making both films in fine style. BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F sees the titular hero return to Beverly Hills to aid his adult daughter after her life is threated when she gets too close to a crime ring being investigated by Axel's old friend, Billy Rosewood. DAN LEBENTAL Editor Dan Lebental ACE seems to be the man to call when it's time for big laughs and big action. Aside from the many films Dan has done in the MCU, including IRON MAN, IRON MAN 2, ANT MAN, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, and SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, Dan's work can also be found in ELF, BAD BOYS FOR LIFE, BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision-making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 49 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Karen Peterson to discuss the latest film in their Tony Scott series, Days of Thunder (1990). Four years after making the monster hit that was Top Gun, Tony Scott reteamed with Tom Cruise and producers Dom Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer to take their collaboration from the skies to the racetrack with Days of Thunder. After making Beverly Hills Cop II and Revenge (which are discussed briefly on the show), Scott was tapped to recreate the magic of his 1986 hit, this time with his leading man a bigger star and co-writer on the project, inspired by Cruise falling in love with racing, as well as the producers loving this new idea. While Scott clashed with Simpson and Bruckheimer throughout the production, the end result is an entertaining sports action drama with tremendous performances by Cruise and Robert Duvall, as well as the breakout role for Nicole Kidman. Ryan, Jay and Karen (the biggest Tom Cruise fan we know) discuss the film, their relationships to the sport of racing and their overall love of sports, Karen's favorite Tom Cruise movie, the overt boyish behavior the characters have throughout the film, if the ending/John C. Reilly side plot works, the racing scenes, the infamous wheelchair race scene between Cruise and Michael Rooker, and if this movie is better than Top Gun. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h05m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Tony Scott with a review of his next film, The Last Boy Scout. PODCAST: Jerry Bruckheimer, Iconic Filmmaker, joins Sports Business Radio to discuss his latest movie, Disney's “YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA” starring Daisy Ridley (@DaisyRidley). The film chronicles the amazing true story of Trudy Ederle, 1924 Olympic gold medalist in swimming and the first woman to successfully swim 21 miles across the English Channel back in 1926. YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA champions female empowerment and the jarring realities that faced female athletes in that era. It's an inspiring underdog story and Bruckheimer notes in this conversation with Sports Business Radio, that this movie received the highest audience test score of any movie he has ever made. Bruckheimer has produced over 50 blockbuster movies in his career, grossing nearly $14.5 Billion. His hit movies include “Top Gun”, “Top Gun:Maverick”, “Remember the Titans”, “Glory Road”, “Flashdance”, “Beverly Hills Cop”, “The Rock”, “Con Air”, “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Armageddon”. During a recent interaction with ComicBook.com, Bruckheimer, known for producing both the Pirates of the Caribbean and Top Gun franchises, hinted at the nautical series making its return to the big screen ahead of other projects. The producer shared insights into the complexities of scheduling around iconic actors, such as those involved in the Top Gun series, making the reboot of Pirates a smoother venture by comparison. “You don't know, you really don't know,” Bruckheimer remarked when discussing project timelines. “But we're gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don't have to wait for certain actors.”

Do you remember that movie that Disney did back in the 40s with a bunch of classical music, and no words, and it was kinda spooky and ended with a big freaking demon on a mountaintop? Member the first part with Mickey Mouse and his blue hat making a bunch of mops go absolutely berserk?! EVER WANTED TO SEE A WHOLE MOVIE ABOUT THAT?! Well, this is kind of it. This week on The CineMEH Podcast! Josh and Ryan are back for another CAGE MATCH where we take on a modern, urban fantasy film staring Nic Cage and based on a five minute short from Disney's Fantasia. Welcome to The Sorcerer's Apprentice. A film more concerned with explaining why sorcerers wear the shoes they wear, than pacing itself correctly. Join your hosts as they debate how a movie can be both too long and too short at the same time, why inconsistent magic rules make for a poor magical movie, and, once again, why bad movies start with medieval flashbacks. This one has it all in this season's penultimate episode that might be the most apt mediocre film yet! You'll laugh (at the incompetence)! You'll cry (at the clunkiness)! You'll be awed (at just how it was that Bruckheimer thought it was okay to expand a short into a three hour epic)! Pop the popcorn and fill up your soda, it's time for The CineMeh Podcast! The Sorcerer's Apprentice was released in 2010 and stars Nic Cage, Alfred Molina, and Jay Baruchel. The CineMEH Podcast is a Slyjack Media, LLC production Like what you hear? Negli anni '90 la parola blockbuster faceva spesso rima con Jerry Bruckheimer, un produttore che ha lavorato su un'idea molto personale di cinema di intrattenimento. Con Air è la tipica "americanata" che oggi non esiste più.
Jerome Leon Bruckheimer (born September 21, 1943) is an American film and television producer. He has been active in the genres of action, drama, fantasy, and science fiction. His films include Flashdance, Top Gun, The Rock, Crimson Tide, Con Air, Armageddon, Enemy of the State, Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor, Kangaroo Jack, and the Beverly Hills Cop, Bad Boys, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the National Treasure franchises. Many of his films have been co-produced by Paramount and Disney, while many of his television series have been co-produced by Warner Bros. and CBS Studios. In July 2003, Bruckheimer was honored by Variety as the first producer in Hollywood history to produce the top two highest-grossing films of a single weekend, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Bad Boys II. In 2023, Top Gun: Maverick earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Picture. April 11th, 2023 sees Flashdance released on 4K disc, celebrating its 40th Anniversary. His best known television series are CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, CSI: Cyber, Without a Trace, Cold Case, and the American version of The Amazing Race. For the lattermost, he won ten Primetime Emmy Awards. At one point, three of his TV series ranked among the top 10 in the U.S. ratings—a unique feat in television. He is also the co-founder and co-majority owner (along with David Bonderman) of the Seattle Kraken, the 2021 expansion team of the National Hockey League. Learn more about your ad choices. In an interview with AP Entertainment, Bruckheimer said that “we're still working on it” and that “nothing's definitive yet,” but that the team was “continuing to take little baby steps” towards writing a screenplay. Depp has previously said that “nothing on this earth” would convince him to return to the role. Bruckheimer also discussed plans for a female-led spinoff of the franchise starring Margot Robbie, saying that the script for the film “will come forward at a certain point” but that the team is currently working on another Pirates of the Caribbean film first. There is no confirmed release date for either Pirates of the Caribbean 6 or the spinoff.
TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE (2004) began life as a straight parody of Bruckheimer style action movie tropes before morphing into something more satirical after the commencement of the Iraq War, and successfully captures the sardonic fury of those who accused the US of pursuing recklessly jingoistic and interventionist foreign policies in the wake of 9/11, whilst simultaneously spearing the hypocrisy and vanity of the narcissistic Hollywood liberal elite and their self-interested and superficial virtue signalling activism. On the face of it then TA:WP is a political movie but the SOUTH PARK not quite alumni's usual brand of bland devil's advocacy social satire means that the film's message, summed up in an expletive ridden monologue, is a confused 'violence isn't always the answer but it's necessary when there are no other options' bit of whataboutery wrapped up in a cringingly pro-Republican metaphor about the US political system, at least that's what it looks like from this side of the Atlantic, 18 years after the film's release. Trey Parker and Matt Stone's persistent nihilism and equal opportunist approach to offensive content means there is plenty of homophobia, sexism and racism throughout. Good job the whole thing is still very funny then, with the film's casual discrimination and hostile stereotypes going well past ridiculous all the way to absurd. It also helps that the duo along with regular collaborator Pam Brady have a great understanding of the pace and mechanics of the action movies they deconstruct, complemented by polished cinematography from Bill Pope (THE MATRIX, BABY DRIVER) and painstaking production design. Though the puppets themselves were notoriously difficult to work with - the pair dubbed their approach 'SuperCrappyMation' and frequently expressed their hatred for the technique - we are treated to several great gags like the setup to an elaborate fight sequence or a graphic sex scene made all the funnier by the application of the medium they chose. The songs are catchy, the dialogue crude and the disdain for Michael Bay palpable. Matt Damon.

Jordan and Brooke fly solo (but never leave your wingman) for arguably the most homoerotic film of all time – 1986's "Top Gun!" Oiled up beach volleyball, phallic symbols, and locker room scenes abound – but just how queer is this queer classic? Did Tony Scott know what he was awakening with that volleyball scene? How do we reckon with military propaganda in our cinematic outings? And is Tom Cruise the final boss of movie stardom?Follow us on Twitter! in our 200th (!) episode Mike Rich and Steve check out six new releases.... We received the screener for SHARK BAIT the same day we were due to record the episode, but there was no way we were going to miss the opportunity to watch the latest film by director James Nunn, who has consistently delivered excellent DTV thrillers, and this feels like something of a step-change. Check out our review! Next is COP SECRET, an Icelandic love-letter to the buddy cop genre, with all of the nods to Bay, Bruckheimer, et al that you would want. NINE BULLETS finds Lena Heady's hard-hearted burlesque singer taking on the local mob boss in order to protect a child's life... The genre of "person stuck in a single location" has had a lot of traction recently, probably as a consequence of COVID, but SHUT IN takes this to the Nth degree as our protagonist is locked in a pantry and must help her kids keep out of the hands of a child molester! GHOSTS OF THE OZARKS is next - take a listen to find out what we thought! Finally we have IMAGE OF VICTORY, a film set shortly after WW2 and is about a kibbutz under seige by the Egyptian army. Our short Shot is FATAL LOVE, which sees a young man's marriage hanging by a thread when he starts getting phone calls from an old flame. The DTV Throwback is BACKTRACK, starring Adrien Brody as a psychiatrist whose patients are more than they seem. Look out for The Loved Ones' Robin McLeavy in the cast! Follow the Short Shots TWITTER page, where we will be linking to a short film every day! Don't forget to also check out our main show, the DTV DIGEST on TWITTER and FACEBOOK!
On this very super excellent awesome radical episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast we celebrate our 200th EPISODE (it's all about quantity not quality, folks!) we check out what may be the ultimate VJP movie. It's got it all: Bruckheimer, Cage, Cusak, Malkovich, Buscemi, Rhames, Chappelle, Trejo, Williamson, Potter... We are talking about the 1997 action film "Con Air"! An innocent hero on his way to meet his daughter, an airplane full of the worst convicts imaginable, Cage with flowing locks. Check out the 200th episode where we lose our minds over this one, and discuss whether one really should put the bunny back in the box.
John Wayne and Stew ride back into movie theaters for "The Northman," and revisit the (largely forgotten) Clive Owen-starring, Jerry Bruckheimer-produced version of "King Arthur." Plus, Netflix pet peeves, 3-D printed food, and Stew avoiding "Yellowstone" (yet again) to watch Julia Child.
We talk with film and television producer Bonnie Bruckheimer (“Beaches,” “Hocus Pocus,” “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood”) about her longtime collaboration with Bette Midler, gender issues within the film industry, and a few of her favorite films, including “Monsoon Wedding,” “Room,” and “Like Water for Chocolate.” http://www.thefilmosophers.com #BonnieBruckheimer #filmproduction #Beaches #HocusPocus #movies [Theme music performed by Scarlet Newman-Thomas, courtesy of The Teenage Diplomat] © The Filmosophers 2021
Pull on your sweatiest tank top and let the wind lift your long prison locks as we take off on Con Air. Is the length of Nicolas Cage's sideburns an accurate barometer for his character's craziness in a given film? Did John Cusack borrow his suit from David Byrne for this? Is Helen alone in finding Steve Buscemi supremely attractive? Why didn't Trisha Yearwood's How Do I Live come on every time John Malkovich and Nic Cage were on screen together? And who leaves their kid in an abandoned plane graveyard?? We don't have any answers for you, but plenty of explosions.
