A leather-clad Alexander Skarsgård is riding into this week's Take as our very special guest. That's because he's here to talk about ‘Pillion', the one-of-a-kind comedy drama where he stars as mysterious BDSM biker Ray. The film follows his unfolding relationship with Colin, a shy small-town boy played by Harry Melling—who you might have heard on the show a few months back chatting to Simon about ‘Harvest'. Colin begins to discover his submissive streak under Ray's dominant hand, as their complex relationship develops. Alexander sits down with Simon to unpack the film—a ‘Dom-Com', as he calls it—and gives us the lowdown on what a Skarsgård Christmas looks like too. Don's miss Mark's review of ‘Pillion' on next week's show. This week we've got his verdicts on three more juicy new releases for you as usual. First up, ‘Sisu: Road to Revenge'--the Finnish action sequel to 2022's ‘Sisu', where seemingly unkillable action man Aatami Korpi goes on a revenge rampage against the Red Army. Plus, Bizarre biblical horror ‘The Carpenter's Son', starring Nicolas Cage going full Nicola Cage yet again—and ‘Wicked: For Good' – the sequel to last year's musical smash spectacle. The Good Doctors run down the box office top 10 too—and from the top of the charts to the bottom of the barrel, there's the Laughter Lift. Plus your excellent and erudite correspondence answered. Fellow Horseman Brandon Legion of The Horror Wolf 666 podcast joins me and Special Guest Co-Host (also my wife) Tina K. Hill. It'sa fun episode where we name out top Nicolas Cage movies. The three of us have been long time fans, and over dinner one night, Tina proposed we do an episode dedicated to our favorite movies featuring the prolific Nicolas Cage. Intro: “All the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “Love Me” – Nicolas Cage
We've alluded to our love of this movie for a long time... It's time to look 2 minutes ahead, and talk about the incomparable NEXT.Nicolas Cage stars as Shy, Socially Awkward Nicolas Cage. Usually that would work, for some reason it doesn't here. Director Lee Tamahori, who has proven himself as an incredibly talented director, also seems to be having an off day. Jessica Biel and Julianne Moore are there to raise the bar, but can't save this movie from itself. It's a real mystery why this movie doesn't work and yet is one of the most enjoyable films in history. Greg and Joe can't stop watching and talking about it.... So where is the magic that makes this amazing? They find that one of their favorite editors, Christian Wagner, brought much of the magic. Cinematographer David Tattersall does some arresting work. Production designer William Sandell brings his A-Game. Writer Gary Goldman wrestled with tough source material, and brought some contemporary ideas to the script. Great people, above and below the line, make this a sneakily great movie, one that we will rewatch forever. We do a lot of episodes for them. This one is for us. Holy bait and switch, Batman! (Like invoking the name of the caped crusader in an episode description that has nothing to do with that) Russ and Jared are back in the Cage zone for Season of the Witch (2011), starring Nicolas Cage, Ron Perlman, Stephen Campbell Moore, Stephen Graham, Ulrich Thomsen, Claire Foy, Robert Sheehan, and Christopher Lee. Stay tuned for an all-new Trailer Trash next week!
Set within Roman-era Egypt, The Carpenter's Son follows a carpenter (Nicolas Cage) and his wife (FKA twigs) as they are raising their teenage son (Noah Jupe). Having lived under threat for years, the family have held closely to their faith and traditions. However, as the family stops in their travels, their son encounters a mysterious stranger (Isla Johnston). As the two become friends, the stranger begins to tempt the young man, claiming to know the truth that his father has kept from him. As the son is lured into a forbidden world, his father becomes increasingly concerned for his spiritual well-being as dark forces continue to grow around them. In this 1on1, we speak to director Lotfy Nathan about exploring 'edgy-teen' Jesus, "Biblical horror" and learning good from evil.THE CARPENTER'S SON is in theatres now.
hosts Kevin Mumphrey, Victoria V.A. Jones, and Karsten Hyde-Fargason welcome filmmaking couple Kyle and Zuzu Weingart, the creative minds behind the feature film Cuisine de l'Apocalypse. The Weingarts discuss how their shared love for movies—from It's a Wonderful Life to Mel Brooks and B-movies like Tremors—inspired them to pursue filmmaking. Zuzu shares her unusual start in Japanese refrigerator commercials, and Kyle recounts how Zuzu motivated him to leave a gas station job to go to film school. They detail the challenges and dynamics of working together as a married couple and parents on projects like their first $5,000 feature film, The Waiting Game, which battled unexpected four feet of Montana snow. Zuzu also discusses the heartbreak and silver lining of having her scene with Nicolas Cage cut from the film Butcher's Crossing (which earned her a SAG card). Finally, they dive into their new project, Cuisine de l'Apocalypse. Kyle reveals the film was inspired by his love for cooking shows and Gilligan's Island, aiming to be a fun, unpretentious movie. Zuzu explains how they secured funding, including a $50,000 film grant and a supportive private investor, after starting their production company, 99 Productions, right before the 2020 pandemic.
Faithspotting hosts Kenny Dickson and Mike Hatch review and spot faith elements in the film The Carpenter's Son by director Lotfy Nathan. Included in the episode is Mike and Kenny's interview with Lotfy Nathan. The Carpenter's Son is based on the apocryphal text, The Infancy Gospel of Thomas. The text is a collection of non-canonical stories of Jesus during the years He and Mary and Joseph were in exile in Egypt. The stories depict the struggle of the Holy Family as Jesus becomes aware of his differences and as he grows into his divinity. Collected in the 2nd or 3rd centuries, the stories are not considered part of the Biblical canon but reflect tradition and perhaps curisosity of followers about the childhood of Jesus. The film has been called a "Jesus horror film" by many, and while aknowledging it's darkness, Nathan considers it more of a spiritual and perhaps theological thriller. The film stars Nicolas Cage as the Carpenter, (Joseph) Noah Jupe as the boy (Jesus), FKA Twigs as the Mother (Mary) and Isla Johnston as the stranger (Satan) and Souheila Yacoub as Lilith. Faith Spotted: Discussion about the Infancy Gospel of Thomas within the Christian tradition. How imagining the full meaning of Jesus's full humanity and divinity, and the struggles beyond his ministry and crucifixion can strengthen one's relationship with Christ and one's faith. Imagining what is was like to be Jesus's parents, especially for Joseph to be his earthly, stepfather. Through the interview there is an opportunity to hear about director Lotfy Nathan and his Biblical and theological awareness growing up in the Coptic Orthodox tradition, and how he seeks to use those lessons in sharing this story. The film speaks to people of fith who have doubts ander when God seems to be silent and absent in the midst of struggles in life.

Hey there! LTNS!Today we take a look at a pair of films that deal with the creation of a film, but the catch is that the source material is notoriously difficult to adapt. Consequently the crux of the story we see involves the difficulty the creators are having putting the thing together. We start with ADAPTATION (2002), directed by Spike Jonze. We've got a terrific ensemble cast including Nicolas Cage, Chris Cooper, Meryl Streep and more. Cage is a man who suffers from anxiety and depression, and he can't get his act together to write an adaptation of the book The Orchid Thief. His twin brother shows up and decides that he wants to write a movie script. Hijinks ensue. Now that we've seen the struggles with the script writing process, move on to Part 2, where we observe the struggles with the filmmaking side of things.
Puny Podians Assemble! Ryan and David are back in the Super Secret Spoiler Show vault, this time diving into Iron Man 3—the movie that kicked off Phase 2 and split fans faster than Tony's suits falling apart mid-flight. They're breaking down Shane Black's snarky, Christmas-set spin on the Iron Avenger: the Mandarin twist, PTSD Tony, an army of exploding Extremis soldiers, and a whole lot of suits. From Iron Man 3's divisive legacy to its surprising emotional depth, this episode covers what worked, what whiffed, and why it still sparks debate across MCU fandom. Plus, the usual SSSS chaos—Skrull of the Movie, product placement awards (looking at you, Audi), facial hair rankings, and the eternal question: which role would Nicolas Cage absolutely overact to perfection? Whether you think Iron Man 3 is underrated brilliance or Tony's weakest link, this spoiler-filled deep dive is loaded with armor, attitude, and absurdity. Hit play and let's power up! Nicolas Cage may be safely back in his crypt of chaos (for now), which means Andy, Stu, and Ed are turning their gaze to capes, cowls, and cosmic punch‑ups. For the rest of November, it's all about superhero cinema. In the first half of this week's episode, the trio tackle Esquire's 25 Best Superhero Films list. Which entries truly earn their spot in the pantheon, and which feel more like hype than heroics? Expect passionate calibration, nit‑picking, and the occasional defense of the underdog. Then Absurd Autumn marches on as Andy and Stu pivot to John Carpenter's 1988 cult classic They Live. Sunglasses, subliminal messaging, and one of the most gloriously overlong alleyway brawls in movie history — it's Carpenter at his most satirical and surreal. The duo unpack its absurd brilliance, its biting social commentary, and why it still resonates decades later.Get us on the Socials @CageFightingPodUse my special link (cagefighting) to save 30% off your first month of any Zencastr paid plan.

Our 2025 Halloween episode is a double feature in the "mentally disintegrating men" genre: in Ingmar Bergman's Hour of the Wolf, Max von Sydow is beset by some unusual vampires, and in Robert Bierman's Vampire's Kiss, Nicolas Cage becomes an even more unusual one. If people attempting to bite each other to death without proper vampire fangs is your idea of horror, this is the right Halloween film podcast episode for you. (And if it's not, watch these movies and you may change your mind.) If your idea of horror is desperately needing other people without being able to stand being around them then you've also come to the right Halloween episode. This week marks episode 211 of the What Are We Doing Podcast, and I've officially hit the “too busy to breathe” point. I'm on a 12-day nonstop run of weddings, events, podcasts, and marketing chaos, all while trying to remember to eat something other than leftover mac and cheese. October? No days off. What are we doing? This episode kicks off with a PSA to brides, grooms, and anyone who plans to serve food to a crowd: hire Mission Barbecue. Forget the “mom-and-pop” caterers who promise love in every bite but deliver cold broccoli and chaos. Forget the fancy chefs who run out of oven space. You want food that tastes good, shows up on time, and doesn't need a miracle to stay warm? Mission Barbecue. That's it. End of debate. Then I move into the part of the weekend where my friend Kaisa got married. I DJ'd the wedding as my gift, and in return, her husband Paul gifted me a 1999 graded 8.5 holographic Gengar Pokémon card. We looked it up. Thirty thousand dollars. Thirty thousand. I cried in my car. You try keeping a straight face when someone hands you a $30k ghost Pokémon as a thank-you. What are we doing? After that came a trunk-or-treat event for local preschools, hundreds of kids, and a K-Pop Demon Hunter dance party. Because apparently, I don't know how to say no to anything in October. But before we can even think about Halloween, it's time for the annual Thanksgiving Meal Olympics. Aldi, Walmart, Costco, Giant, and Honey Baked Ham are all fighting for your turkey money. Aldi wants $40 to feed ten people. Costco says $199 for eight. Walmart undercuts them all with $38, but you have to cook everything yourself. Giant's claiming $20 but only if you've spent $400 already. And then there's Honey Baked Ham, where you pay for peace, quality, and not having to bake anything. Two minutes in the oven. Done. Best ham or turkey of your life. What are we doing? From there, we head straight into politics. Donald Trump has pardoned Binance CEO CZ after a $4 billion fraud settlement—right after CZ's company invested $2 billion in Trump's family crypto business, “World Liberty Financial.” Totally a coincidence, right? The man literally said money laundering isn't a crime. Then he tore down the East Wing of the White House to build a $350 million ballroom. Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and half the Fortune 500 are helping pay for it. And when people asked about the construction, the White House released a slideshow including Clinton's scandal, Obama's “terrorist visitors,” and Hunter Biden's cocaine bag as part of “historical context.” What are we doing? And if that circus wasn't enough, the New York City mayoral debate turned into an SNL sketch. Candidates argued over parades. One said all parades matter. Another said he's too busy to attend. Someone asked if they'd create new parades. A third guy looked like he was being held hostage. Absolute chaos. We wrap the episode with the $20 million diamond heist at the Louvre. Some say it's real. Others think it's PR for “Now You See Me 3.” Either way, it's proof that someone in Paris didn't spring for $30 Wi-Fi cameras. If they want those diamonds back, they better call Nicolas Cage. What are we doing?Episode 211 is pure madness from start to finish: bad caterers, rare Pokémon, Trump's crypto pardons, Thanksgiving hacks, a mayoral debate about parades, and a diamond heist conspiracy. So before you go—hit the like button. Subscribe. Share the episode. Ninety-eight percent of you still haven't. It takes one click. Support the show. Help me survive another week of this circus we call life. What are we doing?

Day 23 – Episode 173: Mandy (2018)On Day 23 of The Conner & Smith Show's 31 Days of Halloween, Ryan and I dive into Mandy (2018) — a strange and surreal operatic fantasia descending into the madness of revenge. Nicolas Cage delivers one of his most unhinged and haunting performances in this neon-soaked fever dream by director Panos Cosmatos. It's a heavy-metal horror symphony of grief, rage, and hallucinatory visuals — a movie that feels less watched than experienced. Equal parts hypnotic and horrifying, Mandy takes the revenge genre to mythic extremes, forging something uniquely feral and transcendent.Support The Conner & Smith Show on Patreon here:

What's a better combination than Nicolas Cage and a Lovecraftian setting? In Color Out of Space (2019) Nic Cage stars as an average man and “bourbon connoisseur" who moves his family to a rural farm where an inexplicable event unravels their reality. This is a slow burn psychological drama about danger you can and cannot see. Bald Move - Mandy (2018) Thank you Doug for commissioning this podcast!
