Rapha presents Talking Luft! I'm Talking Luft with the legend from London, Alec Briggs. Alec grew up in SE London and has raced track, cross, MTB, road and made his way to fixed-gear racing in Red Hook Criteriums, or 'Moto GP on bikes' as he was first introduced to it. He's hugely passionate about cycling & getting people involved in the scene. As well as being a super talented rider himself, Alec went on to start his own team, Tekkerz CC, as a place to support young guns coming into the sport. Make sure you head back and listen to last week's episode to hear all about it! I knew he would be a great guy to have on the podcast to not only hear his story but also to Talk some Luft. So this episode we jump into all the usual questions, how does he wear his casquette? Luft or no luft? He shares his favourite ‘training' loop that's a little more exciting than most, his favourite ever bike, we agree to disagree about the AG2R kit & he tells a war story that ends in triumph at a Red Hook Criterium. Plus a whole lot more! This was a lot of fun and I know you'll love hearing more from Alec. Enjoy guys! And stay tuned next week as it's time for some cobbled classics chat with Luke Durbridge. Colin Strickland is a gravel, cyclocross, and road cyclist who shot to prominence in 2016 when he dominated the 2016 Red Hook Criterium fixed-gear series in Brooklyn. Since then, he's won back-to-back titles at Gravel Worlds and taken the win at this year's Dirty Kanza 200, becoming the first person to finish the race in under ten hours. Payson caught up with Colin in San Francisco last month, the morning after they competed in Red Bull Bay Climb, to discuss his achievements and varied career. They talk about their love of off the bike tinkering, their experiences attending the same tiny private school in Austin, TX from kindergarten through high school, and Colin's unconventional Dirty Kanza strategy that baffled his competitors and brought him a decisive victory.
David Trimble started a global movement in cycling when he founded the Red Hook Criterium at his birthday party in 2008. Since then he has grown the event into a four-race international series that included Brooklyn, London, Barcelona, and Milano while also inspiring other fixed gear crits all over the world. Last week he announced that Red Hook will take a 2019 hiatus from all events to reevaluate ways to continue to grow fixed gear crit racing as one of the most exciting formats in the sport for racers and fans alike. Tune into hear about the history of the race and some of the amazing athletes that participated in this year’s Red Hook Criterium on March 24th. Joe also discusses his own running group, the Orchard Street Runners, and their upcoming races. This program was sponsored by Hearst Ranch. “[The race] transformed the area into something that was unrecognizable…The detachment [of Red Hook] is nice…I was blown away just walking around that area. You can feel the separation from everything that you know about New York and what you assume New York is, and it’s completely unique.” — Joe Dinoto on Cutting the Curd
