On episode twenty-eight of Mindful Warrior Radio, we welcome Yuri Hauswald. Yuri is an icon of the gravel cycling world. As a professional endurance cyclist for Giant Bicycles and the Elite Athlete and Community Development Manager for GU Energy Labs, Yuri is also an innovator, storyteller, and mentor to many. He is probably best known for winning the world's premier gravel bike racing event, Unbound, formerly Dirty Kanza, in 2015 at age 44. No stranger to adversity, Yuri talks about his mindset and motivation for facing challenges head on.When asked what has sustained his healthy and extended athletic career Yuri tells us, “I've always enjoyed pushing my physical limits. If I had to put my finger on something—and I don't understand the chemistry of it—it's the endorphins. The chemicals that are triggered in our bodies and in our brains when we go into those states…when you're pushing yourself physically…I've always found some sort of pleasure and joy from doing that.” When asked how he finds the discipline to keep going Yuri says, “I trust my training around certain power zones. My coach and I figured that my diesel engine could run at a high efficiency for long periods of time. Not super-fast. I wasn't fast but I had the ability to hold good power numbers for long periods of time. So, sticking to that and having the discipline to know that.” For the rest of us, he says a simple practice to get through hard times is to “take a deep breath. Take that pause. Have the tantrum. Figure out the next steps. Keep moving forward and you're going to be super proud of yourself when you get through those conditions.” About finding joy in challenging times Yuri says, “Sometimes things just suck. And you have to deal with that suck. You have to figure out a way through. Life is not always joyous, but I do think that when you get through that mud pit of suck—or whatever you want to call it—that the joy you do find on the other side is possibly more powerful and more meaningful because you did go through the suck. The most important thing in all of that is just continuing to move forward, whether it's baby steps or long strides. If you can find little ways to continue moving forward through that suck, you're eventually going to get through it.” To learn more about Mindful Warrior and Mindful Warrior Radio please follow us on Instagram @therealmindfulwarrior and check out our website at www.mindfulwarrior.com

Welcome to episode 179 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We have a MEGA show for everyone this week. Joining us in Studio G for a discussion on “the Swimrun relationship” is clinical psychologist, author, and all-around amazing human, Dr. Yael Schonbrun. This was a great conversation about partnership, values, and so much more and we can't wait to share it with all of you!But first…Training UpdateUnlike our “training is moving right along with swimming and running as we barrel towards X” that we usually share, this past weekend we stayed on land and ran the Marin Ultra Challenge 50k in our extended back yard of the Marin Headlands. It was a fun day running in the mountains working on nutrition, pacing, meme ideas, etc. while putting in a big day on our feet in prep for ÖTILLÖ.ShoutoutThis week we're shouting out to dryrobe for sponsoring the show last month. It was a blast to get to check out their new dryrobe Lite and we encourage everyone to check it out. We'll be rocking ours at Casco Bay later this Summer in case anyone wants to see these awesome pieces of kit up close.Wisdom Nugget of the WeekIf you can't imagine it, you can't have it. – Toni MorrisonFeats of EnduranceWe haven't done this segment in a few weeks so we're giving out two awards this week. First up is Sacha Bergerhausen for posting a Swimrun workout in the town of Frickenhausen, Germany. Safe to say that anytime anyone posts a workout from Frickenhausen that there's a good chance of winning an award. Our second award goes to Luke Hutchins for completing the Unbound Gravel 200 (formerly called The Dirty Kanza). Don't know what this is? Well, it's a 200 mile gravel bike race that takes place every year in Kansas and it's a beast of race. Strong work on that!Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunNow for the “news.”We're kicking off this edition with another edition of our ad hoc series, Race Director Reports, with our friend and race director Nicolas Roman about this year's EX Swimrun Super Sprint, EX 23 Long and Short events. We loved his enthusiasm and vision for what's possible with Swimrun since we first interviewed him back in 2021 and as you will hear, he's still super stoked! In other news, there were a slew of Swimruns taking place all over Europe. In Sweden, Jonas Colting's Boras Swimrun took place and looked like a good time was had by all. In Portugal, the Tâmega Swimrun (which we recently highlighted in a course preview episode) a.k.a. the first ÖTILLÖ Merit race in Portugal went off without a hitch and literally all the photos look epic! Finally, over in Spain Swimrun Costa Azahar looked as magical as ever. Here in the United States, the Bellingham Swimrun is taking place this weekend in beautiful Bellingham Washington. There's still time for folks to get their flights together so if you were waiting for the last minute, now's your time to shine! (Also make sure to check out our course preview episode for this local gem of a race.) Finally, here in California we only have one Swimrun (why? Great question!) and it's in Folsom on July 29th. We've said it before, but if we want to grow the sport in the U.S. we need to show up to the races. So come join us for the Folsom Swimrun for this fun/beginner-friendly event. Need additional incentive? Use the code LTB10 to save 10% off of your registration. That's it for this week. Reach out to us if there's any Swimrun news that you'd like for us to share on the show.Show BusinessWe had an idea for an episode called “When Life Imitates Memes” and we want your help! Did a dog literally bite you in the butt during a race? Did you think that something poked you in the water only to realize that it was your partner's paddle? You get the idea. All you have to do is send us a DM or email with an audio clip of your funniest/weirded Swimrun experience for a chance to get it shared on that forthcoming episode. We're already planning for Ödyssey Swimrun Casco Bay and wanted everyone to pencil in some dates and times on their calendars. First, on Saturday, July 7th at 10:00am, we will be co-hosting a shakeout Swimrun with Ark Sports, dryrobe, Wild Swimrun, and Team Envol at East End Beach. Also on July 7th at noon, we will be hosting our second annual LTBz Patreon luncheon before we all head over for packet pickup. Finally, on July 8th, we will be hosting our Third Annual Post-Race Party at a location TBD but likely the same place as last year. Stay tuned for facebook event invites in the next few weeks.Dr. Yael SchonbrunIt was so great to talk with Yael. She's a wealth of knowledge on all things relationships and it was cool to get her take on what makes for great Swimrun partnerships. We talked about all kinds of stuff in this conversation and it's safe to say that teams and solo Swimrunners alike will take away a lot from her wisdom. We encourage everyone to sign up for her newsletter, Relational: The Art and Science of Connections here.Enjoy!~~~That's it for this week's show. If you are enjoying the Löw Tide Böyz, be sure to subscribe to the show on your favorite podcast player and leave us a five-star rating and review since that's the best way for people to discover the show and the sport of Swimrun. Gravel cycling's favorite dad, Ted King, and bikepacking's favorite philosophy professor, Joe Cruz, sit down in Ted's cozy living room for an IRL chat.On the surface, it might not seem that a former WorldTour pro and a bikepacking-infatuated philosophy professor have much in common, but the two were so motivated to record an episode in person that Joe drove 2.5 hours north to meet Ted in his home. As it turns out, they've been on each other's radars for a while. Ever the obsessive and thoughtful route designer, Joe poured over maps of Vermont to help craft what would become known as Ted's legendary VT-XL ride in 2020, a 310-mile/+35,000' homage to the Dirty Kanza (presently known as Unbound Gravel), which he rode as a DIY substitute to that year's event. Joe then went on to write about it on Bikepacking.com.With that unique collaboration as a backdrop to their meeting, the two discuss a wide range of topics in this episode, covering everything from the type of riding they're both inspired by these days, to being early adopters of social media as a tool for inspiring and building community; they touch on Lael Wilcox's recent Arizona Trail FKT attempt and some of the controversy surrounding what it means to be "self-supported"; they discuss the value of rides that leave you so tired and hungry that they cause the constructs of daily life to fade away; and ultimately, they share the notion that people are fundamentally good and want to take care of each other, which seems to be especially true in the congruent worlds of gravel cycling and bikepacking. It's a great conversation between two of cycling's most interesting and inspiring personalities, so sit back and tune in, you're in for a great ride.Full episode recap: https://ridewithgps.com/journal/6363-ride-buddies-episode-8
Back to August 2020. Laurens and Stefan continue their journey. And as we are used to, they are not alone. Former professional cyclist Pete Stetina joins the podcast from America. Since Lau still wants to win Dirty Kanza one day (and Stefan wants to finish it), they're listening to the men and women who know all about this epic race. Stetina and Lau are in this together. From pro on the road to freebooter on gravel, but what is the biggest difference? And what is Pete missing most from the peloton? And what is it like to share a room with Bauke Mollema? You can hear it all in this Coastin' episode. Wasn't it Joop, that said: “The bike the bike, that all I like”. Well, not for us. We cover life on, and off the bike. This is Coastin' - the live slow ride fast podcast We continue a series of podcasts in which we dive into the world of gravel. Into the minds of its star racers, race organisers and other subject matter expertsSo the search continues: What is it, when people talk about the spirit of gravel? How do gravel races differ from road events? How's the US gravel culture compared to Europe's gravel scene? What's with the gear, what's hot and whats not? So join us for another episode of Coastin' - powered by Shimano GRX and Specialized
The level of excitement, fun and adventure that Lachlan has brought to the world of cycling is incredibaly inspiring. He has opened the door for adventure and fun all while setting his own rules racing things and setting new boundaries in the sport of cycling. Thank you Lachlan for inspiring us to go farther, have fun and showing people there is more to see on a bike. Lachlan embraced the EF Education-NIPPO's alternative calendar wholeheartedly, racing all four races on our 2019 alternative calendar — Dirty Kanza, Leadville 100, GBDuro and Three Peaks Cyclocross. He also rode the iconic Colorado Trail (850 kilometers) in just under four hours (3 days, 22 minutes) to raise funds for Australia's Starlight Foundation. In 2020, Lachlan continued to chase alternative calendar events and completed the imphamous 700 Kilometer Badlands race in 44 hours. Oh and he did that after taking a combined 15 minutes off the bike throughout the event. For Lachlan, racing for EF Education-NIPPO has offered him a perfectly crafted bridge, linking his World Tour goals with his thirst for exploration and new challenges.Lachlan's approach to professional cycling has been, well, alternative. He raced with us from 2011-2014, first on the development team and then for Garmin-Sharp, before opting out of the WorldTour in pursuit of off-the-beaten path adventures. Those adventures included several long expeditions with his brother Gus and filming the “Thereabouts” documentaries, in partnership with Rapha. The rides and the filmmaking allowed Lachlan and Gus to connect with the bike, each other and other people in a different ways. And for Lachlan, these connections are at the crux of why he rides. That's not to say Lachlan doesn't like to win. He does. He's as competitive as as any of his teammates, and he as the results to prove it. Last season, Lachlan won the fifth stage of the 2019 Tour of Utah one week after completing (and podiuming) at his first Leadville 100. follow him at @lachlanmortonQ&A with LachlanWhat animal best describes you?WhippetTravel must have?Instant coffeeAdvice for new travelers?Go slowly. Don't go too many places. Spend more time really getting to know a single place.Favorite city?Sydney. It was the first big city I visited. I still feel like I don't totally know it.Favorite cycling moment? That's a difficult one. I think riding to the middle of Australia with my brother is my nicest bike experience. In terms of racing, winning the Tour of Utah was definitely special. My family was there. My brother was on the team. My wife was there. Pretty cool.

Endurance News: Driver Rams Cyclists In Arizona Race, Critically Injuring 6 SHOW LOW, Ariz. (AP) — A driver in a pickup truck plowed into bicyclists during a community road race in Arizona on Saturday, critically injuring several riders before police chased the driver and shot him outside a nearby hardware store, authorities said. Six people were taken to a hospital in critical condition after the crash in the mountain town of Show Low, about a three-hour drive northeast of Phoenix, police said. Helmets, shoes and crumpled and broken bicycles were strewn across the street after the crash, and a tire was wedged into the grill of the truck, which had damage to its top and sides and a bullet hole in a window. Two other people went to a hospital themselves, city spokeswoman Grace Payne said, and one of the severely injured was later flown by medical helicopter to a Phoenix-area hospital. The suspect, a 35-year-old man, also was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. "We don't know the motivation," Payne told The Associated Press. "We know he fled the scene." Police said a Ford pickup truck struck the bicyclists about 7:25 a.m. in downtown Show Low during the annual 58-mile (93-kilometer) Bike the Bluff race, then fled. Peloton threatens to brick customers' $4,295 treadmills unless they pay up The maker of the $4,295 Tread+ treadmill alerted customers that, going forward, they'll need to start forking over $39.99 per month if they want to keep using the exercise equipment they already own. The company confirmed the move over email, after a message to customers announcing the plan was shared by Peloton user Brianna Wu on Twitter. At issue is the recall of the Peloton Tread and Tread+, following disturbing incidents of children and pets being sucked under the machines resulting in injuries and even one death. According to the company, a new feature called Tread Lock will prevent "unauthorized access" to the Tread+. "Unfortunately, Tread Lock is not yet available without a Peloton Membership," explained the Peloton statement to Mashable, "which means Tread+ owners without a subscription cannot access Just Run at this time." For those not familiar with the Peloton lingo, "Just Run" was a setting on Peloton's treadmills which allowed owners to use the product without a monthly subscription. That option, according to Peloton, is no more. In other words, Tread+ owners who previously opted to not pay the monthly subscription fee now find they have no choice if they want to keep using the bulky machine taking up valuable real estate in their apartments or homes. . Today on the show, Payson talks to two influential behind-the-scenes figures in gravel racing. Michelle Duffy is Associate Marketing Director for Life Time, and oversees its off-road events such as the Leadville 100 and Unbound (formerly Dirty Kanza). She came to cycling after spending years as a marketing manager for the New York City Marathon. Amy Charity is the owner and co-founder of SBT GRVL. She raced professionally as a road cyclist and spent 15 years in the financial sector before founding SBT GRVL. In this interview, they talk about how they turned a major scheduling conflict between two of gravel's biggest races into a collaborative opportunity. When it became clear that Leadville and SBT GRVL fell on consecutive days, they created LeadBoat, a 250 mile stage race combining the two events which is set to take place later this year. They also talk about expanding the gravel community, and what it's like being women in a sport which is still dominated by men. They also share their uniquely difficult experiences during 2020, when Amy lost her business partner and Michelle suffered from a life threatening health event.
Coach Frank drops some wisdom about what types of training we recommend for the next 22 weeks. Why 22 weeks? Well, that' how long it is from now until mid-May, where you likely want to be fast, faster, peaking, or crushing your A race. We'll also touch on: what if you have 25 – 26 weeks, which is the Memorial Day Holiday, traditionally a big event week? Or training for the June 5 Unbound Gravel – formerly the Dirty Kanza. And accordingly, we know some of you out there are chomping at the bit to start racing in mid March which is in 14 weeks. This is part 2 of our OG “Timing is Everything” Podcast and an amalgamation of previous podcast about what training you should do and when and how much of. This podcast also address the existential “should you lift weights or not?” and talks about saving your form for later on in the year by way of sharing the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment. This podcast is broken down into 3 parts: ** Your training for the next 22 weeks ** Your training for the next 14 weeks if you are an early season racer ** And your training for the next 26 weeks and beyond if your goals later on in the year. 50726Weights + Base is Your Winning Combo! This conversation was really fun and we recorded it while Elliott and I were on opposite ends of the US doing training camps. Elliot was in Colorado, while I was in New Hampshire. Elliot is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to coaching and racing and I learned a lot during our conversation, including why he feels that the Pop Tart are by far the best ride and race fuel. This week we bring on the one and only Noah Granigan. Noah, like our friend Maxx Chance, is famous in Boulder, but this year is looking to take the “Noah Show” on the road to Europe with the Hincapie-Leomo team. Noah comes from a family of cyclists, and has been on the bike his entire life. His grandfather, Joe Saling, is a member of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame and a great supporter of his grandson's passion for road racing. Noah talks about that support, and his path through the age-ranks of cycling in the U.S. and abroad. We continue the conversation about what makes European racing different, how the Belgian roads are made to bite any rider who isn't focused, and about old men groping your calves. We also get off road. Gravel has been exploding in popularity in the States, and Noah tells us about his Dirty Kanza experience. He was ninth place last year in his first real gravel experience, and we discuss the craziness of the race as well as the things he learned the hard way while in the trenches of this 10-hour event. Look out for #theBelgianCrack and let's get off course!
This week Frank and Jackson sit down to help each other out and answer some questions. We have a great back and forth conversation about these topics, and hopefully you can glean some valuable information for your own training, racing, and nutrition goals! Perhaps the two most important pillars of the FasCat Coaching ethos, following the plan and Winning in the Kitchen go very hand in hand. We've podcasted about them separately but realized that they fit together nicely, so we have a bit of a combo episode for you today to revisit these topics to keep you inspired as winter rages on. Winning in the Kitchen is about choosing go fast foods and setting the conscious intention to prioritize nutrition as part of you training – and sticking to that plan, just like #FtFP when it comes to training. The origin of FtFP comes from our coaching experience and noticing bad training habits. #FtFP is having a training plan and following it. This is also where we got the expression “If you can follow a plan, you can get faster” – this is based on being able to FtFP: Planning Commitment Sacrifice Dedication Vacations Time Management Life Balance Having your ducks in a row Having the mindset you are going to follow the plan come hell or high water Not #FtFP'ing: Very rarely does anyone miss a workout intentionally. It's the details of what they do/don't during that workout – Missing 15 minutes of a workout here, or not having your ducks in a row there. It was just two weeks ago that Big Wheel Coaching made a pilgrimage to one of the most challenging races ever-imagined...The 200-mile Dirty Kanza Gravel Race. Although the race has earned the reputation as the "World's Premier Gravel Race", for nearly ever participant, it is as much of a vision-quest as it is a bike race. This brutal event draws thousands of people, every year, not because of a huge prize purse or first-rate SAG stops, in fact there is no prize money for the winners and the event requires riders to be entirely self-supported while out on course. It is the fact that Dirty Kanza is primarily an event where each rider is competing against themselves in a crucible-style test of strength, endurance, will, and preparation that makes this one of the most amazing events anywhere. This year Coach Brian, supported by Coach Brady, headed to Dirty Kanza to see what all the hype was about and experience what was his longest and most difficult ride ever, amongst a professional racing career that has spanned nearly ten-years. In this episode of the BWC podcast Brian and Brady discuss the entire DK experience and share "lessons learned" to help you on your next big ride.
Talk about good timing... Pat and Ashton Lambie talk right after his victory at The Dirty Kanza 100 about his victory, gravel racing, world records on the track, and where everything is going.
Ahead of Coach Brian's first participation in the ultra-endurance Dirty Kanza 200, he spoke with Race Director, LeLan Dains who has some great tips in his 15+ years of experience with the infamous DK200! These tips are as applicable for gravel riding as it is Gran Fondo's, endurance MTB, or any other performance-focused cycling event! It was such an incredible opportunity to speak with the Mastermind behind what is the World's Premier Gravel Grinder and we are certain you will enjoy and learn from all that Mr. Dains has to share.
There is an old-saying that goes like this... Question: "How do you eat an elephant?" Answer: "One bite at a time!" Signing up for a bucket-list event like Dirty Kanza, the Leadville Trail 100, Paris-Roubaix Sportive, or any other epic ride takes a whole lot of guts. At 200-miles the Dirty Kanza is touted as "The World's Premier Gravel Grinder", and for good reason, its popularity is such that entry is gained through a lottery system, meaning not everyone who applies will be able to take to the start or test themselves in this incredible event. In thinking about Dirty Kanza, which takes place next week, and what it takes to complete a monumental challenge like the "DK", Coach Brian connected with 8-time DK finisher Curt Shelman in this weeks BWC Podcast. Curt has a wealth of knowledge about these kind of events and doubles as one of the minds behind the Chamois Butt'r brand that is renowned and loved by all types of cyclists for it's ability to make the longest of rides comfortable! In the interview Curt and Coach Brian talk preparation, training, equipment, and why epic events like the Dirty Kanza are a special kind of accomplishment that every finisher can be proud of.
Kaitie Keough (nee Antonneau) joins us today to talk about winning the 200 mile Dirty Kanza, training for cyclocross, yoga, meditation, chickens and getting dogs (or not depending on whether you are Peter or Molly). We end the episode with some nitty-gritty on how Kaitie set up her Gravel bike for the epic adventure that is Dirty Kanza so make sure you listen right through!
