In the latest episode of Hafta, the panel discusses whether political protest movements need ideological anchoring to succeed, sparked by a debate over the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) lack of clear ideological convictions.Poornima Joshi, the resident editor of The Hindu Businessline, argues that successful mass movements of the last decade – even ostensibly issue-based ones – have tended to carry ideological undertones. In addition to ideological moorings, Rinchen Norbu notes that mass protest movements also crucially push for structural, systemic demands that outlast a minister's resignation or reshuffle. The CJP's demands, he argues, don't meet that bar.The Anna Hazare movement comes up as a test case, with Abhinandan Sekhri disputing the claim that it had RSS backing, saying the initial support came from trade unions and communist parties, not the Sangh. A similar dynamic is drawn out through the farmers' protest, which Joshi argues benefited from ideological and organisational anchoring – support from farm unions gave it both structural backing and a wider anti-corporate framing beyond the farm laws themselves. The conversation also touches on how ideology can double as both an asset (organisational strength) and a constraint (limiting appeal). Anand Vardhan notes that once a movement positions itself in the opposition camp, its stated commitments – secularism, socialism, anti-corruption – tend to overlap with those of every other party making the same pitch, leaving it with a harder question to answer: what, then, is its actual product differentiation?Separately, Abhinandan notes that Newslaundry is lining up a follow-up round table with panellists holding more critical views of Hartosh Singh Bal's position on the film Satluj.

If you've been lucky enough to hear Dave play live recently, you will have heard an old favourite tune enthusiastically pulling back the curtains, blinking at the sun, having a good stretch, and returning to the fray for '26 in majestic, remixed fashion. Yes, the much-loved 'Nightfalls' is back.nnDave's love affair with the haunting vocal refrain ("And at sunrise / And at sunset / But when night falls / the music") from The Ananda Project's 'Cascades of Colour' has lasted for a quarter of a century, initially as a centrepiece of his much-loved Cape Town mix for Global Underground from 2000.nnIn 2016, appreciative of the exposure Dave had given their track, The Ananda Project returned the favour, giving Dave sample clearance to use the vocal – and 'Nightfalls' was born, making a right noise all its own as Selador's 50th release.nnAnd now…that haunting yet uplifting, inescapable vocal hook is back, with a re-fashioned 'Nightfalls' a focal point of Dave's eagerly anticipated album. Dave has, of course, recorded a new version himself – deep, breaks-driven, chilled yet ever so slightly menacing.nnA trio of handpicked remixers bring us glorious variety with their reinterpretations.nnElif's seriously atmospheric take guarantees transcendental dancefloor epiphanies.nnDilby's heads down throbber is pure energy, the vocal atop a sumptuous sonic stew.nnCioz is pure melodic wonk, a funky piano line underpinning a riot of riffs. Team Selador – Night People

This week on Hafta, Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, and Shardool Katyayan are joined by Hartosh Singh Bal, Executive Editor of The Caravan, and sports broadcaster Arjun Pandit. The discussion begins with Hartosh's critique of the film Satluj (previously known as Punjab 95), which he labels as propaganda carrying partial truths. Hartosh, who has reported on Punjab for years, is also the nephew of KPS Gill – the highly controversial officer who helmed the state police at the height of militancy. This was the very force that Jaswant Singh Khalra, the central figure of the film, was investigating, and whose actions ultimately led to Khalra's killing in custody.Check out previous Hafta recommendations, references, songs and letters.
After my last episode, where I shared my experience of returning to a 10-day Vipassana retreat for the second time, I felt drawn to share something different. This comes from episode #267, when I first discovered Vipassana meditation. I shared the teaching behind it: why we react the way we do to life's difficulties, why the usual ways we try to find relief don't fully work, and what really does. This explanation is based on the teachings of S.N. Goenka, the teacher who established these non-commercial Vipassana meditation centres around the world. I felt this piece deserved to stand on its own, so here it is, exactly as I shared it back then.If you want the fuller story, my own personal experience of that first retreat, you will find it in episode #267:https://personaldevelopmentmasterypodcast.com/267Send us a textSupport the showSubscribe to our weekly email: https://personaldevelopmentmasterypodcast.com/email---A personal development podcast for midlife professionals, offering mindset tips and practical tools for personal growth, self mastery, personal mastery, and purposeful living.
From the QUALITY OF MIND Podcast Part of the ‘Not Even 5 Mins Series' (Ep24) Part of the Not Even 5 Mins Series In this short Quality of Mind snippet, we explore why seeing through self-identification matters. The central misunderstanding is that we take ourselves to be a separate self. A person who has to be improved, protected, managed, fixed, developed and proven. But what if that “self” is not what we fundamentally are? When we believe we are this separate self, life can become a constant project of identity-management. We try to control, upgrade and succeed as something that may not actually be solid in the first place. That can create enormous stress and psychological pressure. Quality of Mind points to the possibility of seeing through this Case of Mistaken Identity. As that becomes clearer, something relaxes. The fight with reality softens. The pressure to manage the “me” eases. More peace, clarity, resilience, creativity and possibility become available. This is not just relevant when life feels difficult. It is also relevant when life is already going well. Because seeing through self-identification can support the shift from striving to thriving. Curious? Want to know more? Explore the full conversation with Katijn, where we go deeper into seeing no self, Direct Inquiry, the Case of Mistaken Identity, and the freedom that becomes available when self-identification begins to loosen.
