When the Scriptures declare those who are in Christ are free, what does that mean? The church of Corinth took it to include acting outside of the boundaries found in other passages. Paul brings it back to the fact that our bodies belong to God. He purchased us with His body and blood. Our freedom is from the enslavement of sin, to glorify God, and lead others to that same freedom.

In this passage from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses a very common but very serious sin. Adultery is a sin of breaking the marriage covenant. Far too often men get away with the exploitation of women through lustful acts that are hidden. The abuse of the female body in this way is an abuse of the image of God. Likewise, the body and the spirit are not separate things at all. What damages the body also damages the soul. The sin of perversion is the origin of adulterous behavior. Jesus clearly reminds the religious among us that it is not the literal obedience to God's law that matter. Literal interpretation of acts can also be corruptly interpreted for sinful ends. It is the Spirit of God's Law that changes the heart. Thoughts of the heart are the foundation of actions. Therefore, if adulterous acts occur, it is the adulterous heart that causes them.

What are the uncommon implications of sex? Some think sex connects two people like Blue Tac, others say Velcro which both have degrees of temporary stickiness, but the inventor of sex says it's more like epoxy-permanent.

How do you view the body? Well, that's a weird question, isn't it? In the second half of 1st Corinthians chapter six, Paul has to deal with some challenging topics, and he wants the Corinthians to know it isn't just about the surface layer of actions (sexual immorality), but really has to do with the core issue of how we view our bodies. Are they for us or are they for the Lord? As you might expect, Corinthian culture and norms are not that different from the world we are facing today in America. Views on morality have swung far away from a God-centric worldview to a hedonistic worldview: "my body is mine and I can do with it whatever I want!" The Corinthians had that same view and Paul starts this section by quoting it: "All things are permissible [lawful] for me!" but that doesn't mean all things are beneficial. As Pastor Steve deals with this difficult and challenging topic of sexual sin, our bodies, and how we are to live in a permissive culture, listen in and be challenged to think like Paul--and like Christ--that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, therefore we should "glorify God in your body."

The AWAKENED series is a preaching / teaching journey through the letters of Corinthians recorded during the Worship Gatherings at Eastgate Baptist. Pastor Jerome Taylor shares about the letter from the Apostle Paul to the church at Corinth which he dearly loved. In this letter is the heartfelt declaration for the church to wake up, open their eyes, and truly view the power of the Christ through the cross. Such an awakening brings life transformation like no other by the working of God's grace.
We're just like the Greco-Romans of the first century in two ways: (1) we are obsessed with the perfect form of the human body, (2) we think we can do whatever we want...because it's our body. Sadly, such thinking leads to misery (both in terms of self-esteem and in terms of general health and well-being). God CARES about our BODIES. And how we take care of them matters.

Sex isn't really something we are used to talking about at church. Some might say the church is for spiritual things not... Sex. Others might ask, why should the church have anything to say about what I do with my body? Yet we find that our scriptures instruct us, the church on sexual practices. According to the scriptures our bodies are not meant to gratify our sexual desires, our bodies are meant to glorify God.

Pastor Daniel Bracken preaches a message out 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 entitled, "The Idol of Lust".
As we continue our look at I Corinthians 6, we see that one of the best ways to resist temptation is to have an awareness of Christ as a part of your lifestyle. As part of that, we need to realize that we can't control sin, so we should flee from the temptations.
The Corinthians of Paul's day heard what they wanted from his teaching of God's Word. They were thinking they were free to do whatever they wanted. But as we see from what Paul actually taught them, God's Word is the only true source of real freedom.
Paul said to glorify God with our bodies, and he said not to join our bodies to a prostitute. We literally should not take another human being and turn them into an object for our visual arousal and physical pleasure. Paul was likely also referring to the prophetic idea of chasing after other gods as chasing after prostitutes. One such "god / prostitute" is that of perfection. We are constantly bombarded by airbrushed images of physical "perfection", an ideal body type that mostly doesn't exist. We are shown these images over and over so that we will pale by comparison and feel badly enough about ourselves to buy stuff to try to make ourselves look like airbrushed perfection. We also try to appear or be perfect in other aspects of our lives. All of this perfection is a lie, and a prostitute we are chasing, rather than loving our bodies for what they are and what they can do, glorifying God in our bodies: we work, we play, we go through daily life, and our bodies should be loved for allowing us to do these things. Nathaniel fell into this perfection trap when thinking of the Messiah. He wanted something of a super hero. Jesus, however, was not Captain America. He was a Jewish carpenter from Nazareth. Jesus was also "Shekhinah", the indwelling presence of God. Jesus is the connection of humanity (and of all creation) to God. Jesus connects us to God. He does not connect some idealized, non-existent, airbrushed version of us to God. He connects us to God, as we truly are. We aren't perfect. We don't have it all together. God doesn't expect us to. God didn't come among us as Captain America, but as a comparatively lame kinda guy...a regular carpenter. He connects regular our regular old selves to God, our beloved, marvelously made selves.
