What does a German helicopter paramedic working on North Sea wind farms have in common with an Airbnb host in Hertfordshire?Surprisingly… quite a lot.In this slightly different episode, I welcome back one of my regular guests, Vito, who has travelled over from Germany and joined me to discuss something that sits at the heart of both our worlds: communication. In his profession, ambiguity can have serious consequences. Instructions have to be precise, language must remain consistent and everyone needs to understand exactly what is expected of them. The more we talked, the more I realised that these same principles are what make hosting enjoyable too.Because guests don't arrive knowing how your home works. They don't know which room is theirs, where things belong or what the unwritten rules are. And if we leave them to guess, we unintentionally create confusion and anxiety. In this episode we discuss:• Why repeating the same language consistently creates certainty.• How helicopter crews use standardised words to avoid misunderstandings.• Why saying "Up, up, up" leaves no room for interpretation.• The importance of creating systems that people can instantly understand.• Why naming and labelling rooms removes uncertainty.• How visible boundaries help guests relax.• Why assumptions are often the root cause of mistakes.• How reducing mental workload creates a better experience.• Why signs and labels are not overkill – they're kindness.• How clarity removes the need for constant corrections. One of my favourite moments was hearing Vito describe his experience as a returning guest in my home. He explained how seeing the same room name repeated on his door, his fridge shelf, his food box and his shower tray created an immediate sense of reassurance.Nothing was left to guesswork. And that is exactly the point.Because when guests know where they are, where things belong and what is expected of them, everybody relaxes.Superhost Secret"If you want guests to relax, remove the need for them to think."Great hosting isn't about giving people more information, it's about removing ambiguity. When guests don't have to stop and ask themselves, "Which room is mine?", "Can I use this?" or "Am I allowed to do that?", you've created something very powerful. You've created clarity, which is one of the greatest gifts a host can give.If you'd like to learn more about turning your own home into an income stream through hosting, there is a link below to register your interest in one of my regular webinars. And remember to follow me on social media @SuperhostNeil for more tips, tricks and a bit of laughter along the way.Until next time, may your rooms be booked, your reviews be 5-star and clarity be the key to less stress. There may be no one alive who saw Houdini perform magic. Yet we still know his name and his legend. Dua Lipa namechecked the escape artist in a 2023 dance hit and she's not alone. Houdini is still a cultural reference point, despite having died 100 years ago. And that's pretty much what he would have wanted. IDEAS explores why his name persists in our imaginations and how his magic helped his family escape poverty.Guests in this episode:Adam Begley is a biographer living in London, and author of Houdini: The Elusive American.David Ben is a conjuror, writer, and consultant in Toronto. He's writing a graphic novel featuring an imagined adventure for Houdini.Katie Bender is a playwright and actor. Her interactive performance about Houdini is called Instructions for a Seance.
Money is emotional — and in this episode, Erik Garcia, CFP®, ChFC®, BFA™ and Dr. Matt Morris, LMFT explore why emotions have such a powerful influence on financial behavior. From market volatility and economic uncertainty to comparison, insecurity, and fear of failure, people rarely make purely rational financial decisions. Instead, emotions often drive reactions that conflict with long-term goals. Dr. Matt introduces a powerful framework: emotions are signals, not commands. Fear, anxiety, and stress may reveal that something matters deeply, but they should not automatically dictate behavior. Erik shares real examples from his work as a financial planner, explaining how emotional reactions during market downturns or financial stress can sabotage otherwise solid plans. The episode offers practical tools for slowing down emotional reactions, identifying what feelings are trying to communicate, and responding with intention rather than panic. Episode Highlights: Dr. Matt explains that emotions drive thoughts and behaviors, making it essential to pay attention to the feelings behind financial actions. (02:22) Dr. Matt clarifies that people tend to treat emotions as facts rather than signals worth examining. (03:55) Dr. Matt shares that emotions are good data points but not directives. (05:17) Erik recalls choosing to validate clients' fear during a market crisis rather than dismissing it with "don't panic." (07:06) Dr. Matt recounts calling Erik during a market drop and how Erik's grounding in market history helped calm his fear. (08:12) Erik discusses how social media and financial content creators trigger emotional responses that push people toward decisions inconsistent with their values. (09:39) Dr. Matt explains that financial fear often points to a deeper concern such as "Will I have enough?" rather than surface-level market activity. (13:55) Erik emphasizes that emotions have legitimacy and decisions should align with what matters most rather than being hijacked by emotion. (14:44) Dr. Matt recommends using an emotions wheel to name feelings precisely, which slows reactive thinking. (16:19) Erik believes that talking through high-stakes emotional moments with a professional, whether a therapist or financial planner, is especially valuable. In this message from our A Faith for Today series, Pastor Ericka reflects on Jesus' instructions to the apostles in Matthew 10 and what they might teach us about following Jesus today. As Jesus sends his followers out to heal, serve, and share good news, he also invites them into a life of trust, hospitality, and mutual dependence. Through stories of lost sermons, pet scorpions, music, and everyday faith, this message explores what it means to cultivate a faith that can grow, adapt, and endure through every season of life. Faith was never meant to remain static. It is something we practice, experience, and return to again and again as God continues to shape us over time. Whether you're navigating uncertainty, carrying disappointment, or simply wondering what faith looks like in this season, this message is an invitation to trust that God is still at work.

In this concluding chapter I am proceeding to discuss the final biblical instructions to men to be men. GOD has created and designed men to be strong, appropriately aggressive, protective, socially organised, romantic, godly, spiritual, courageous, and to problem-solve. Lately, these very traits have been categorised as “toxic masculinity.” I am arguing that these are the traits of positive-masculinity. But they only warrant being positive if they are harnessed according to the wisdom of God's Word. I have shown in our previous chapter that Christ was the preeminent example of such positive-masculinity. I now outline how the apostolic teaching of the earliest Church articulated how these traits were to be developed and celebrated by men. In my conclusion to this short book, I will appeal to all men to heed the example set by those I have referred to in the Old Testament, the preeminent example of Christ, and this apostolic teaching. I do this in the light of the current global crisis we must confront. This sermon on 1 Thessalonians 5 teaches that Christians should practice basic spiritual disciplines in their relationships with others, including honoring leaders, encouraging and serving people, showing patience and forgiveness, rejoicing, praying, and living with gratitude. It also emphasizes that pleasing God should be a believer's highest priority by following the Holy Spirit, embracing God's truth, exercising discernment, and avoiding every form of evil. Finally, the message reminds believers that God is faithfully sanctifying them, calling them to live holy, set-apart lives that reflect their devotion to Jesus until His return.

After reminiscing about a battlefield experience at a different Washington hospital some years ago, Jonah indulges in some I-told-you-so on Iran, before getting into the midterms, SpaceX, investment regrets, 60 Minutes, Bari Weiss, media bias, Sam Francis, Italian Elite Theory, middle American radicals, Gramsci, and societal restraints on violence. In this two-part episode our hosts, Cayla, Nathan and Halli take a look at three topics of intrigue:Christie Pits Park: Christie Pit park was the place of a notorious riot within the city of Toronto. During the start of Hitler's time in office in Germany groups of supporters cropped up across North America. In August of 1933, a group of young nazi's incited a riot at a ballpark, pulling in close to 10,000 people into the fray. Unfortunately, these ideologies wouldn't end there, as we still see them this day.The Earl of Rochester: John Wilmot, the 2nd Earl of Rochester was a poet from the 1600s, just not the kind we would expect from that era. Much of his greatest works were smut and for the longest time this was not appreciated, until nowThe Flood Myth: "Instructions of Shuruppak" is one of the oldest documents we know of, the oldest version thought to be from 2600-2500 BC and it was thought to be a text of great wisdom, a document from a father to his son on how to live a good life. But there's more to that, so much more. As it also refers to a great flood, potentially THE great floodPt. 1Christie Pits ParkThe Earl of Rochesterhttps://www.thehumanexception.com/l/file-0159-0160-flooding-the-earl-of-christie-pits-park/
Have you ever had a queasy feeling, as an examining lawyer is explaining the so-called ground rules for the deposition with your witness, that something about the instructions was amiss? But you weren't quite sure what to say - and didn't really know whether or how to object? Instructions like, "Can we agree that if you answer a question, it means you understood it?", and "Will you agree to limit your testimony to actual facts you personally know to be true, and not answer based on speculation or opinion?" can box your client in, cause them to omit important information, and do grave damage at later evidentiary hearings or trials. In this episode, Jim Garrity explains how these kinds of instructions may be improper and how to articulate your objections. It's a definite don't-miss.

Elise Haas is a former television anchor. You may remember her from KOIN 6 News, Portland's local Portland CBS affiliate. Elise is now at Gallatin Public Affairs and is working on a public safety ballot measure called the Safer Portland Initiative, which will provide funds for the hiring, training and support of additional police officers at the Portland Police Bureau ("PPB"). Portland has one of the most understaffed police departments in the country. Recently Portland Mayor Keith Wilson led the biggest round of police defunding in Portland history with a budget proposal to cut police funding by $21.7 million. Last month - in May 2026 - Portland City Council approved cuts to Portland Police Bureau ("PPB") of about $18 million. By contrast, in 2020, Portland City Council cut the police budget by $15 million. Instructions for mailing in your signature for the Safer Portland Initiative can be found here. They carved a map of you.Where Are We Swerving? Are the ancient stargates carved into Egyptian temples religious mythology — or did someone leave step-by-step instructions that we've been misreading for 4,000 years?I deep dive into investigative mythologist William Henry's three-decade investigation, which started with a single ceiling carving at Dendera — a shape that has no business existing in a building completed millennia before Einstein was born.I investigate what happens when you reassemble a biblical artifact everyone assumed was complete, because the components no one accounts for change what the device looks like — and what it was for.Topics (among others):The Hieroglyph at Saqqara: Sixty feet beneath a ruined pyramid, the oldest sacred writings in Egypt contain a glyph that matches a physics diagram that wouldn't be drawn for another 4,000 years. The Missing Inventory: For 2,500 years, everyone chased the Ark of the Covenant's golden box — but the Bible lists components no one talks about, and the fully assembled shape resembles something that shouldn't be possible in the ancient world. The Procedure: A mathematician argued the Egyptians didn't just depict transformation — they recorded a protocol, and all three of its elements converge in a single artifact most tourists walk right past in the Cairo Museum. The Pattern Across Oceans: Four civilizations with no known contact — Egypt, Sumer, the Maya, Tibet — describe the same bodily transformation using nearly identical symbols.➡️ Listen on Patreon Today: www.patreon.com/theswervepodcastExclusive episode only on Patreon in The Producer Vault. What is The Producer Vault? Jonah Goldberg, like Plato's cave-man philosopher, has briefly returned from the land of book writing and enlightenment to ruminate before us poor, shadow-watching mortals. Jonah considers the origin of the term slush fund, waxes poetic on military etymology, and reflects on the Lewinsky scandal, all before getting stuck in on feminism, John Bolton, the republican spirit, Graham Platner, party self-sabotage, and the cult of authenticity. We are drowning in advice and somehow more unsure of ourselves than ever. Austin Kleon returns to The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast to talk about creativity, childhood, boredom, trust, and why the people who build meaningful lives often stop looking for instructions and start paying attention to what fascinates them. Drawing from his new book Don't Call It Art, Austin shares how his children taught him more about curiosity, imagination, and meaningful work than any creative writing class ever could. Ginny and Austin talk about John Holt, unschooling, screen culture, creative courage, and the surprising freedom that comes when you stop trying to control the future and start paying attention to what is right in front of you. This episode is a refreshing reminder that a fulfilling life is rarely built by following someone else's map. It grows from curiosity, wonder, and the willingness to see where the next step leads. Welcome back to the Audible Bleeding series: Landmark Papers in Vascular Surgery. In this episode, co-hosts John and Dr. Jesse Columbo are joined by our guest, Dr. Caitlin Hicks, to discuss one of the most studied—and most debated—topics in vascular surgery: asymptomatic carotid stenosis. In this episode, we'll trace that evolution through three pivotal trials: ACAS and ACST-1, which established carotid endarterectomy as the standard of care; and the newly published CREST-2, which challenges us to reconsider everything we thought we knew. Along the way, we'll explore how advances in statin therapy, blood pressure control, and antiplatelet agents have fundamentally changed the natural history of this disease—and what that means for our patients today." Jonah Goldberg is infamous for muttering venomous curses against postliberalism at odd moments, such as while flossing or playing backgammon with Steve Hayes. Recognizing that to the layman this might seem rabid or antisocial, Jonah has invited two authors of a recent book on postliberalism to give some background on this puzzling phenomenon. The trio discusses postliberalism vs. anti-liberalism, integralism, Adrian Vermeule, elite capture, national conservatism, Viktor Orbán, ISI, the Heritage Foundation, subsidiarity, the wish to political violence, postliberalism's institutional future, ground-level antisemitism, right-wing Hegelianism, and Peter Thiel. For nearly three decades, Jonah Goldberg has rightly abused Canada for its many crimes: its adoption of the metric system, slanderous contentions about bacon, and dubious claim to Machias Seal Island, to name a few. Recent events have put Jonah in a more conciliatory mood, however, and he has resolved to bring more of our northern neighbors on the show. Today's token Canadian, Michael R.J. Bonner, joins The Remnant to talk about his recent book on liberalism. Michael and Jonah run the gamut, talking about Steven Pinkerism, liberalism's virgin birth, Cold War liberalism, the Rawlsian turn, postliberal criticisms, subsidiarity, modern progressivism, John Stuart Mill, the religion of humanity, left-wing violence, third worldism, Justin Trudeau's lack of self-understanding, and the war in Iran.
