This week's Open Mic guest is Tim Lust, CEO of the National Sorghum Producers. Like other farmers, the nation's sorghum producers are looking to Capitol Hill for an updated farm bill with adequate risk management tools to negotiate many financial, climate and market-based challenges. Lust says Washington has been tardy in delivering promised disaster relief funds much to the detriment of growers still facing dry soils. In this interview, Lust discusses regulatory challenges and market opportunities including renewable fuels and climate-based revenue options.

Contemporary artist Elsa James moves through the Museum of London Docklands' London, Sugar & Slavery gallery - and so, the missing histories of the 17th and 18th centuries - in her 2023 film, Living in the Wake of the Lust for Sugar. In 2023, the Museum of London Docklands invited artist and activist Elsa James to make a disruptive intervention in their London, Sugar & Slavery gallery. Finding the enslaved African voice missing - from both this particular space, and museums more widely - Elsa shot a seven-minute film in shades of black and red, embedding in the space her personal, contemporary experience from the British African-Caribbean diaspora, as connected with the long history of the transatlantic slave trade. With movement, dance, and audio, Elsa reimagines the gallery as the galley of slave ship. Talking about the toppling of statues from Edward Colston to Robert Milligan, she details who controls historical narratives and memory, and why we should reconsider the history of transatlantic slavery as the history of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Elsa illuminates her neon ‘Ode to David Lammy MP' (2022), influences from Stuart Hall to Windrush thinkers, and the parallel othering of her home base, Essex, made apparent by her research into historical Black women like Princess Dinubolu, Hester Woodley, and Mary Prince. Drawing on her work with the International Slavery Museum, we discuss the importance of local and global collaborations in platforming a plurality of voices, problems with the commercial art market, plus her interdisciplinary practice, from neon signs to performance art. Living in the Wake of the Lust For Sugar is publicly available online, via the Museum of London Docklands website and social media. Sehr gut. Dann lasst uns gleich starten. Was war deine berufliche Weltmeisterschaft, deine größte Herausforderung? Rayk: Absolut wertvoll. Also inwieweit betreut ihr mich? Also wirklich klasse, Sehr cool. Rayk: Und jetzt natürlich nochmal AT. Thomas : Vielen Dank. Proper 20 First Psalm: Psalm 78:1–39 Psalm 78:1–39 (Listen) Tell the Coming Generation A Maskil1 of Asaph. 78   Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;    incline your ears to the words of my mouth!2   I will open my mouth in a parable;    I will utter dark sayings from of old,3   things that we have heard and known,    that our fathers have told us.4   We will not hide them from their children,    but tell to the coming generation  the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might,    and the wonders that he has done. 5   He established a testimony in Jacob    and appointed a law in Israel,  which he commanded our fathers    to teach to their children,6   that the next generation might know them,    the children yet unborn,  and arise and tell them to their children,7     so that they should set their hope in God  and not forget the works of God,    but keep his commandments;8   and that they should not be like their fathers,    a stubborn and rebellious generation,  a generation whose heart was not steadfast,    whose spirit was not faithful to God. 9   The Ephraimites, armed with2 the bow,    turned back on the day of battle.10   They did not keep God's covenant,    but refused to walk according to his law.11   They forgot his works    and the wonders that he had shown them.12   In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders    in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.13   He divided the sea and let them pass through it,    and made the waters stand like a heap.14   In the daytime he led them with a cloud,    and all the night with a fiery light.15   He split rocks in the wilderness    and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.16   He made streams come out of the rock    and caused waters to flow down like rivers. 17   Yet they sinned still more against him,    rebelling against the Most High in the desert.18   They tested God in their heart    by demanding the food they craved.19   They spoke against God, saying,    “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?20   He struck the rock so that water gushed out    and streams overflowed.  Can he also give bread    or provide meat for his people?” 21   Therefore, when the LORD heard, he was full of wrath;    a fire was kindled against Jacob;    his anger rose against Israel,22   because they did not believe in God    and did not trust his saving power.23   Yet he commanded the skies above    and opened the doors of heaven,24   and he rained down on them manna to eat    and gave them the grain of heaven.25   Man ate of the bread of the angels;    he sent them food in abundance.26   He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens,    and by his power he led out the south wind;27   he rained meat on them like dust,    winged birds like the sand of the seas;28   he let them fall in the midst of their camp,    all around their dwellings.29   And they ate and were well filled,    for he gave them what they craved.30   But before they had satisfied their craving,    while the food was still in their mouths,31   the anger of God rose against them,    and he killed the strongest of them    and laid low the young men of Israel. 32   In spite of all this, they still sinned;    despite his wonders, they did not believe.33   So he made their days vanish like3 a breath,4    and their years in terror.34   When he killed them, they sought him;    they repented and sought God earnestly.35   They remembered that God was their rock,    the Most High God their redeemer.36   But they flattered him with their mouths;    they lied to him with their tongues.37   Their heart was not steadfast toward him;    they were not faithful to his covenant.38   Yet he, being compassionate,    atoned for their iniquity    and did not destroy them;  he restrained his anger often    and did not stir up all his wrath.39   He remembered that they were but flesh,    a wind that passes and comes not again. As the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.” 21 So Gehazi followed Naaman. And when Naaman saw someone running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him and said, “Is all well?” 22 And he said, “All is well. My master has sent me to say, ‘There have just now come to me from the hill country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of clothing.'” 23 And Naaman said, “Be pleased to accept two talents.” And he urged him and tied up two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of clothing, and laid them on two of his servants. And they carried them before Gehazi. 24 And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand and put them in the house, and he sent the men away, and they departed. 25 He went in and stood before his master, and Elisha said to him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?” And he said, “Your servant went nowhere.” 26 But he said to him, “Did not my heart go when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? Was it a time to accept money and garments, olive orchards and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male servants and female servants? 27 Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your descendants forever.” So he went out from his presence a leper, like snow. (ESV) New Testament: 1 Corinthians 5:1–8 1 Corinthians 5:1–8 (Listen) Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church 5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife. 2 And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. 3 For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. 4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.1 6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Footnotes [1] 5:5 Some manuscripts add Jesus (ESV) Gospel: Matthew 5:27–37 Matthew 5:27–37 (Listen) Lust 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.' 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. Divorce 31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Oaths 33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' 34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes' or ‘No'; anything more than this comes from evil.1 Footnotes [1] 5:37 Or the evil one (ESV)

Defining sin What is sin in the Christian tradition? What do we mean by “7 Deadly Sins”? 7 deadly sins: pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth. Developed in the 300s with the Desert Fathers, especially Evagrius Ponticus. The 7 capital virtues were chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility. In Dante's Inferno there are 8 categories of sin: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, Treachery. The Sins of Board Gaming 1 - It's All About Winning (Pride and Wrath) Winning as ontological end and not functional end (trading seriousness for delight) Fraud and treachery were the worst sins in Dante's mind For games to work, you have to try to win, but winning is no more the point of games than framing is the point of a house or the engine is the point of a car 2 - It's All About Owning (Greed and Envy) Hyper consumption of games - materialism How does this game fit in my collection? This is not a cheap hobby (no hobby is cheap, in the end), so what fits in your budget and priorities? I love the idea of a game swap or trade or market so you get some value out of them and they don't clutter up your life (Marie Kondo) Seeing ourselves first and foremost as consuming beings can rob us of delight and gratitude over what is before us. World in a cup of tea. 3 - It's All About You Being Right (Pride) Arrogance about different games (trading exclusion for inclusion) - tribalism. My games are better than your games. My people are better than your people. My god is better than your god. Assumption that everyone should play games 4 - It's All About You Being in Control (Pride) Alpha player (trading control for agency) 5 - It's All About You (Pride) Putting the games over people - Buddhist concept of valuing people over principles Flexing your games or knowledge Putting principles over people - Buddhist teaching, Jesus tooTurning play into work 6 - People Not Taking Gaming Seriously (Sloth) Bringing the wrong attitude to the table Not respecting other's property Cheetos Agreeing to play a game but not really focus on it 7 - Turning Play into Work? The nature of sin is that it takes something and good and twists it There's more to life than games Anything can become your god Next Episode - Liz Davidson - Value of Solo Gaming CALL TO ACTION: Subscribe to our newsletter (https://buttondown.email/BoardGameFaith) Support us on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/boardgamefaith/) interact with us on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/boardgamefaith/) Discord us Discord (https://discord.gg/MRqDXEJZ).

The Word for Everyday Disciples with Dave DeSelm

David had a bold heart. And the place we see that most wondrously played out is in arguably the most famous story in all the Old Testament – the story of David and Goliath. In 1 Samuel 17, we find the two armies – the Israelites and the Philistines – camped out on the hills on either side of a valley. Stalemated. No one wanted to give up the high ground.  The custom in such circumstances was that each side would choose a champion to come out and they would fight to the death. The army of the survivor would be declared the winner. The Philistines sent out Goliath draft – 9'6” tall, strong as a bull, and twice as mean.  For 40 days, morning and evening, he roars out his challenge. And for 40 days, morning and evening, the challenge went unanswered. Instead, the Israelites cowered in their tents, afraid to take on the giant. They were content to co-exist with the giant.Until the day David walked into camp. Upon hearing the defiant challenge, David said, “This ends today. I'll take him on.” Armed with a slingshot and 5 smooth stones, David walked into the valley to face the giant. Goliath mocked and taunted him, but David's response is one we all need to remember: “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty… he will give all of you into our hands.” (1 Sam. 17:45, 47)David ran quickly to attack, taking out a stone, he slung it at the giant. The stone sank into Goliath's forehead and he fell facedown on the ground. David took the giant's sword and cut off his head. Pandemonium broke out as the emboldened Israelites pursued the fleeing Philistine army. Part of why we love this story is that we thrill to see the little guy win. But I think it's also because deep, down inside, we would all love to be giant-killers.And the reason why? Because… life is full of giants that defy conquering. You have your giants and I have mine – those threatening individuals, those frustrating problems, and those intimidating situations that mock your plans and block your progress.Giants come in all shapes and sizes but the one thing they have in common is that it will take a bold heart to slay them. So where do you start? 1.     You need to name your giant.Perhaps, as with David, it's a person – maybe someone from your past who continues to haunt or control you. Or someone in the present who threatens you or intimidates you.For many, the giant is named FEAR.  For others it's INSECURITY. While others struggle with ANGER, LUST, ALCOHOL, or DEBT.  2.     You need to consider what your giant is costing you (and your family). What's it costing you to co-exist with your giant?  How long are you going to pay the price of not facing up to it?For many of us, the giant has been around for so long and seems so strong that we've simply resigned to live with him…and with the resulting reduced life.  Then ask yourself: “What is my giant costing my spouse…my kids? 3.     You need to dare to believe that with God's help this giant can be slain.I don't know what the Goliath is in your life.  I don't know how big your giant is, but I'll guarantee you this: He's not bigger than God.  Text: 1 Samuel 17Originally recorded on April 30, 2006, at Fellowship Missionary Church, Fort Wayne, IN.

Regardless of our religious provenance, the self-denial implicit in each of the Seven Deadly Sins—Sloth, Envy, Pride, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Anger—reads like a checklist of what it means to be a “good” woman.
