In our passage this morning, the Apostle John uses the word "love" 15 times in five verses. John desired that all would know the love of God which was made known in Jesus Christ.

1 John 4:7-12
As followers of Jesus, we always want to be maturing in our faith. Jesus set-up the Church to function as a community where we all help each other grow so if we’re going to tap into the full potential of His design, we need strong spiritual relationships with the people around us. On Sunday, we plan to look at how Jesus grew spiritual relationships with His disciples, and how we can follow His example in our relationships today.

The source of love determines the definition of love. If mankind is the source of love, then we’re free to define it and categorize it and show it however we want. If God is the source, then He gets to define it – not me, not you, and not a confused culture. In the world today, love is understood in selfish and oftentimes sexual terms, but John paints a much different picture of love in the text today. • Love does not define God. God defines love. Christians love others because love comes out of the person who has been loved by God. Propitiation has to do with satisfaction. The death of Christ satisfied the wrath of God on behalf of every believer. He has already endured the fire so we can stand before God as redeemed children. “No one has ever seen God” – do you know why John included this statement? Because if no one has ever seen God, people look at Christians and the kinds of lives they live because they are His children who take on His traits. What is your life saying to the world? • “Either change your name or change your behavior.” Therefore, “If God so loved us…” then that’s our motivation to love others – God’s love for us. “The unseen God, who was once revealed in His Son, is now revealed in His people when they love one another”. – John Stott

Having studied about the Love of God, the next step, as the Apostle John would say...is putting it into practice. Our focus in part 4 is applying the love of God in our day-to-day living. If we do not do so, we will be the empty, clanging gong that Paul warned us about.

And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." Luke 10:27 If you were to ask your closest friends what it is you love most, what would they say?

Sermons at Park Avenue Church of Christ
Real love is something we choose and it’s more than a feeling. But how do we get it? God is the source of real love and when it’s rooted in Him, it’s unfailing and considerate.

Our mission at Community Church of Greenwood is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and live in full devotion to Him. We want to help people far from God to experience new life in Jesus Christ.
In part 15 of the "Our Story" series, we begin to review another characteristic of people being conformed to the image of Christ: Living truth and love. Dr. Brian Kinlaw looks at 1 John 4:7-12 and discusses the idea that God is love…though perhaps not as how the world defines love. God is the origin of love, the manifestation of God's love is seen in his Son's sacrifice on the cross and God's love is perfection.
Sunday sermons from Bellevue Presbyterian Church.
This morning, we are taking a short vacation from the book of Titus, and looking at John's teaching on what it means to love as God loves. Too often we let the culture around us influence how we love, why we love and who we love, rather than looking to God's Word for His influence on those things. Be blessed this morning as we contemplate the love that God has showered us with.
God's love is clearly demonstrated through Jesus and his people.

Getting to Know the Father Part 4 - The Father is Love
We honor the sacrifice that Christ made for us and the love He showed to us by reflecting His love to others.
The term “God” is often used and rarely considered. Most people discuss the being we call God without ever pondering what makes him that in the first place. This series of sermons describes the three key attributes that are generally ascribed to God – omniscience (all knowing), omnipotence (all powerful), and omnibenevolence (all loving) – and clarifies how all three can be simultaneously true of one divine being. Through this clarification, hearers will begin to understand that who God is, matters to who they are and how they live.
