In The Choice Ep. 3, Ghost and Ashe in America explore The Chosen's third episode, “Jesus Loves the Little Children,” unpacking its hidden symbolism, scriptural depth, and emotional impact. The hosts dive into how this episode reveals Jesus' humanity for the first time, working, laughing, and teaching children in the wilderness, while echoing the seven days of creation through his lessons and labor. They examine how childlike faith contrasts with the cynicism of adults, and how innocence, obedience, and love form the foundation of the Kingdom of God. From foreshadowing Jesus' ministry and the Sermon on the Mount to powerful reflections on humility, morality, and divine purpose, Ghost and Ashe connect the dots between Scripture, storytelling, and real-world faith. The discussion flows from laughter to reverence, highlighting why this “simple” episode might be one of the most profound portrayals of Christ's character ever filmed.

Research has long shown that child abuse and neglect can and often do lead to a wide range of negative effects on a person's life, including mental, physical, and behavioral problems. This kind of treatment during childhood causes stress that alters the way the child's brain develops, affects gene expression, and changes the body's stress response system. Kate Russell is the author of three memoirs about her life, describing her painful experiences in detail, from living with a schizoaffective sister to suffering addiction and subsequently recovering. Her most recent book, Ironing Out My Life: Child Abuse and How It Affected Everything Thereafter, is the third in the series and tells the story of her parents' upbringing, then hers, and the impact their abusive behavior had on her life.Kate is a strong, intelligent, highly resilient survivor, and it was my honor to speak with her for this episode. Links related to this episode:Kate Russell's Amazon author page: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B0878ZJK7Q Portrait of a Dysfunctional Family series: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DPY4BFCYDown the Rabbit Hole: A Memoir of Abuse, Addiction, and Recovery (first book): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08785R8S6Voicemails from My Sister: Stories of a Schizoaffective Sibling (second book): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B099Y8HF5QIroning Out My Life: Child Abuse and How It Affected Everything Thereafter (third book): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0DPM92KW9 Cover photo by Zhivko Minkov on Unsplash.Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. Over the last two episodes, I've told you the story of five-year-old Dennis Vaughan Jr., known affectionately as “Boo,” who died in his grandmother's house on Christmas Eve, 2019. Boo's mom, Danielle Vaughan, fought to regain custody of her five kids, all of whom were under the guardianship of Danielle's mother, Sherry Conner. Despite dozens of reports to DCYF, all alleging that Sherry was abusing her grandkids, they weren't removed from her care until after Boo died. Now, you'll hear my conversation with Danielle, who was candid, raw, and honest as she told me about the abuse and the trauma her kids endured in Sherry's home. The details she shared had my jaw on the floor, and after you hear what Danielle has to say, I'm positive you'll be as horrified as I am.This is part three of the heartbreaking story of Dennis “Boo” Vaughan Jr.Justice for Dennis “Boo” Vaughan Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/profile/100090309441118/ Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. Pastor Dustin Clegg "introduces" us to 1st John and outlines 4 purposes of 1st John:1) That our joy may be complete (1 John 1:4);2) So that we sin less, and learn to repent when we do (1 John 2:1);3) To refute false doctrine (1 John 2:26); and4) So that we may have assurance of faith (1 John 5:13).Dustin also shares 2 observations from the text:1) Redemption, not perfection, was the plan from the beginning.2) John saw complete joy as a necessary fruit of those following Jesus.

Young mother Danielle Vaughan knew her children were being abused in the home of her mother, Sherry Connor. She spent years pleading for someone to intervene before it was too late. No one listened, and Danielle's worst nightmare became reality when her five-year-old son, Dennis “Boo” Vaughan Jr., was pronounced dead on Christmas Eve, 2019.Boo's body told a story of severe and prolonged suffering, and an autopsy revealed that Boo had been savagely beaten, ultimately dying from blunt force trauma to the head and neck. Even though it was painfully obvious what had happened, nearly five years passed without anyone being held accountable. This is the story of young siblings who were failed by the system at every turn, and whose mother's cries for help went ignored. This is part two of the heartbreaking story of Dennis “Boo” Vaughan Jr.Justice for Dennis “Boo” Vaughan Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/profile/100090309441118/ Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. They were ultimately placed in the Laconia, New Hampshire, home of their maternal grandmother, Sherry Connor. Their mother, Danielle Vaughan, had experienced her mother's abuse firsthand and knew Sherry was mistreating and abusing her children. Over the next two years, DCYF received at least 27 reports of child abuse and neglect against the Vaughan children. Despite these warnings from Danielle and several others, including mandatory reporters, DCYF continually overlooked the increasingly egregious and shocking ways Sherry treated her grandchildren. Lawrence Swift Noxon was born in March 1943. At five months old, he was diagnosed with what we now call Down syndrome. Three weeks later, on September 22, 1943, baby Lawrence died from electrocution under highly suspicious circumstances. His father, John Franklin Noxon Jr., was soon charged with murdering his infant son in what many considered a “mercy killing.” For this episode, I spoke with author Jim Overmyer, who wrote The Electrocution of Baby Lawrence, the definitive story of Lawrence's murder and the long, complicated legal proceedings that followed. This is the story of a baby boy who deserved to live a lot longer than he did, and a father who some at the time said wasn't punished harshly enough for his son's murder, while others believed that what John did was for the best. This is the tragic story of baby Lawrence Noxon. The Electrocution of Baby Lawrence: A Murder that Shook a New England Town by Jim Overmyer on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Electrocution-Baby-Lawrence-Murder-England/dp/1538181290/ref=sr_1_1 Jim's author website: https://www.jamesovermyer.com/Jim's Facebook author page: https://www.facebook.com/p/James-Overmyer-author-100041727673681/ Jim's Amazon author page: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B081QRYTRM/about?ccs_id=c7fa7aac-e829-4449-9d6a-e61d26b9b8e0 Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. Send us a textThe power of protective maternal love transforms families, communities, and ultimately our world. When Tara Hackney adopted her daughter from India, a transformative realization occurred during a tender moment of singing "Jesus Loves the Little Children" to her traumatized toddler. The beloved song's lyrics—"red and yellow, black and white"—suddenly felt exclusionary. Where was brown? This gap inspired Tara to reimagine the lyrics to "every color, every shade, just exactly as He made," creating a beautiful children's board book that celebrates diversity as an intentional part of God's grand design.Tara's story weaves together adoption, diversity, and spiritual formation in profound ways. After raising three biological sons, she and her husband adopted two Indian girls, creating what she lovingly describes as twins born "not from my body, but in my heart." The adoption process—what she calls a "paper pregnancy"—required intentionality, sacrifice, and family-wide commitment. Rather than diminishing her relationship with her sons, adoption enriched their family dynamic and cultivated compassion and nurturing qualities in her boys. This conversation offers a refreshing perspective on the transformative power of motherhood, whether through biological, adoptive, or mentoring relationships. As we embrace diversity and nurture faith in the next generation, we participate in God's grand design—creating a world where every child feels represented, valued, and deeply loved.
