Scripture: John 12: 12-16, 23-28 Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King 12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna![a]” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”[b] “Blessed is the king of Israel!” 14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: 15 “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt.”[c] 16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him. -- John 12:23-28 New International Version 23 Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. 27 “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

Listen as Pastor Peter preaches from Psalm 118.
Read OnlineThen Judas the Iscariot, one of his disciples, and the one who would betray him, said, “Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days' wages and given to the poor?” John 12:4–5Jesus was with His disciples at the home of Lazarus, Martha and Mary. He regularly spent time at their home and was close to them. This meal took place just before Jesus entered into Jerusalem for the first Palm Sunday and Holy Week. It was six days before Jesus would die on the cross.Recall that Lazarus had recently been raised from the dead by Jesus and also that Mary, Lazarus' sister, was deeply devoted to Jesus and is recorded as the one who sat at His feet, while her sister Martha served. During this visit, Mary offered another act of devotion to Jesus when she anointed Him with “a liter of costly perfumed oil.” She offered Him an act of love and devotion. The Scripture passage above records Judas' response as he also was at the meal. Jesus rebukes Judas and defends the act of devotion given by Mary, and the meal continues on. One clear lesson this teaches us is that nothing is too good for our Lord. It's true that we must do our part to help care for the poor, but Jesus' response to Judas is quite interesting. He says, “Leave her alone. Let her keep this for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.” Jesus was not downplaying the importance of caring for the poor; He was emphasizing the importance of offering acts of love and devotion to Him.As we enter into this the holiest week of the year, we are given this image of Mary lavishing upon Jesus this liter of costly perfumed oil as a way of inviting us to do the same. Though we serve Christ in others who are in need, we must also seek to regularly offer Him devotion and love directly, even in ways that others may think is excessive. Honoring Him, expressing our love, spending time with various devotions, praying for extended periods of time, and even offering Him our financial resources are all ways in which we give Jesus the glory that is due Him. Reflect, today, upon ways in which you can imitate this act of loving devotion offered by Mary to Jesus. In what ways can you pour forth in an abundant way your time, money, talents, and energy upon our Lord? How can you best express your devotion to Him this Holy Week? Seek out ways to do this directly for the one and simple reason that you love our Lord and want to express that love this week. My glorious Jesus, You are worthy of all praise and honor. You are worthy of our deepest devotion and love. As I enter into this Holy Week, I pray that it will be a time in which I may express my deepest love for You. Help me to pour forth that love in abundance this week so as to show You the glory and praise You deserve. Jesus, I trust in You. The Cross is the Ultimate revelation of the Justice of God and of the Love of God all at once. We should never doubt God's love for us because of the cross. And when we are tempted to doubt one look at the cross should drive away all such doubts!

1. After talking about Mary's over-the-top and unreasonably lavish display of love for Jesus in John 12, Tim said that this text invites us to think about what opportunities would have been missed if Mary had cared about all the social taboos she was ignoring in her actions, and had not anointed Jesus' feet. Take a minute to really think through the scene and the moment. What do you think would have been missed? For Mary? For Jesus? For those who witnessed the moment? For us and others who read of it all these years later? You might address those scenarios one-at-a-time in your discussion. 2. Tim shared a slide that read, “we face the same choice all the time, between playing it safe…or having the courage to love lavishly, generously, holding nothing back.” In what areas, relationships, or spaces do you need this reminder most? Where is it most difficult for you to love and demonstrate your love without holding back? With family? Friends? The marginalized? Your partner? Someone else? In which contexts, if any, do you find it easier to demonstrate your love in lavish and generous ways? Why do you think it is that the places that feel easier feel that way, and that the spaces in which it feels harder feel as they do? Do you see themes or commonalities in your responses that could help you become more aware of the places you hit resistance and restraint? 3. As he closed his sermon, Tim reminded us that every single person out there in the world is fighting really hard battles and is “armored up” as they try not to get hurt. Christians, he said, are the ones who should be out piercing through those coats of armor with love. What do you think about this idea? What does it look like? How does it work? What armor do you tend to wear as you live your daily life? Have you had experiences in which someone else has helped to pierce your own armor? If so, how did they do it? Can you think of people in your spheres who you sense need someone to help pierce their own self-protective armor? What would it look like for you to begin to do that with your love? What barriers might you encounter?

This is Pastor Tom Arnould welcoming you to the Good News Radio Broadcast. In Ephesians 3, the Apostle Paul prayed for the believers at Ephesus. His prayer was that through the strengthening of the Holy Spirit, they would understand the greatness of God's love. Today I will be teaching about this historic prayer.
The gospel message is full of superlatives. Its importance, its magnificence, and its consequences are all of an incomprehensible order of magnitude. It involves love's highest expression - the unbounded love of God shown to us in the person of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. And it is expressed most fully at the cross of Calvary where the Lord Jesus Christ suffered and died for the ungodly. But at Calvary we see humanity's truest colours as well - the true wickedness of the heart of man against God was revealed. Here we also see the heaviest load imaginable placed upon the Saviour Himself - the load of the sin of all people, of all the ages. And there is one more superlative - the broadest acceptance imaginable to sinners far and wide. The invitation is open to you!
If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do? Won't he leave the ninety-nine others on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost? Matthew 18:12 Charles Martin shares from his book, "The Keeper." They talk about the sacrifical love God has for us and His invitation for us to have it for others. Some people have “miracle” testimonies and it can make the rest of us feel like we don't have a testimony. Paul corrects this by theologically telling us what happens when anyone believes in Jesus Christ.
In the first four chapters of Romans, the Apostle Paul put before us the righteousness of God, the unrighteousness of man, and the truth of justification by faith alone. Paul will now place before us the great blessings of justification. All who have been justified by faith in Christ have lasting peace with God, hope in their suffering, and the assurance of God's love.

In this session, we explore the scorn, pain, and suffering Jesus endured, and his ultimate sacrifice that demonstrated God's great love for humanity. He was silent to false accusations and chose to endure the suffering of injustice for the sake of the atonement. The innocent Savior died for the sin of the world. Further, we discuss the events following his death, the discovery of the empty tomb, and the spreading of rumors about his resurrection.Bible ReadingsMatthew 27:24-66John 20:1-10Support the showRead along with us in the Bible Brief App!
