Is this the best summer movie ever? I think so. Video Version: https://bit.ly/3R23oOD Today, we think of the movie “Jaws” as a blockbuster game-changer in movie history. But back in 1973-1975, it appeared to be the biggest financial disaster in cinema history to producing company Universal Studios and many Hollywood insiders. Directed by a talented, but inexperienced and unknown filmmaker, Steven Spielberg, it appeared to be a runaway train leading the studio to eventual bankruptcy. The initial shooting schedule swelled from 55 days to 159 days. And the budget soared from $3.5 million to $12 million. Almost everything went wrong. Spielberg, an age 24 TV director, had no idea what he was doing on a project of this massive scale. They started with no useable script and they spent $1.5 million on a mechanical shark that mostly didn't work while shooting. Also, there was drug and alcohol addiction among the major actors. How could the production of this movie possibly be worse? And yes, it eventually became the most successful film of all time to that date – BUT HOW THE HECK DID THAT HAPPEN? We tell you the REAL story behind the scenes. This is a replay from 2025. Our music is composed, preformed and produced by the genius John Hoekstra. Yesterday, President Trump spoke at a defense and innovation summit in Pennsylvania about the need for both, and his commitment to reshoring and rebuilding the nation's industrial base. Unfortunately, events half-a-world-away are underscoring the necessity, as one summit participant put it, “to supercharge the supply chains” so as to accelerate the translation of defense innovation into production into deployed weapon systems. Not only are we rapidly exhausting our dwindling supply of advanced weapons in Iran. It's no coincidence, comrade, that Communist China is simultaneously flooding the Western Pacific with warships, coast guard vessels, maritime militia and armed fishing boats as it asserts ownership of international waters and puts in place the makings of a blockade or quarantine of Taiwan. To paraphrase the money quote from Jaws: We're going to need a bigger boat – and lots of them – and right quick. This is Frank Gaffney.

Recorded live at The Conduit in London in September 2024, Baratunde and Elizabeth Stewart sit down with their friend and longtime collaborator Jon Alexander, author of CITIZENS and co-host of the podcast How To Save Democracy, for a conversation about citizen as a verb: the radical, hopeful idea that democracy isn't something we have, it's something we do. They get into the story we inherited about independence, the older and truer story about interdependence, the four pillars of citizening, and why a moment when so much feels like it's collapsing is exactly the moment to start building. The timing is no accident. On Saturday, June 13, 2026 Jon takes the TED Democracy stage in Philadelphia at the birthplace of American independence, during America's 250th, to make the case for interdependence. A British man crossing the Atlantic to tell us the move is getting back together. Keep practicing democracy. The verb, not the noun. In Episode 267 of the Vacationeers Theme Parks & More Podcast, Tom is joined by Jon to talk through a busy week of theme park updates, food reviews, and in-park testing. We start with some “old breaking news,” including Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure no longer being included with Universal Express beginning July 1, plus the news that Bad Bunny will voice a pizza character named Pizza with Sunglasses in Toy Story 5.Then we head into Universal Orlando Resort's opening weekend of Summer at Universal. We discuss the overall event atmosphere, the noticeable lack of a parade, and some of the featured summer food offerings. We also review a newer menu item that is not tied to the summer event but absolutely got our attention: the S'mores Cookie at Cafe 4 in Islands of Adventure.Food discussed in this episode:S'mores Cookie at Cafe 4 in Islands of Adventure — $6.29We're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat Platter at Richter's Burger Co. in Universal Studios Florida — $22.99Irene's Creamsicle Cheesecake Calzone at Minion Cafe in Universal Studios Florida — $11.99Finally, we talk about our Magic Kingdom visit on Wednesday, May 13, when the park closed early at 5:30 PM for a private event. DEFENDANT: Bruce EVIDENCE: Jaws Amity Island Red Blend SCENE OF THE CRIME: A Beach Near You -- Hey friend — welcome to the season finale of True Crimes Against Wine, where we drank a Jaws-labeled Napa red and then took a deep dive into sharks, sea-snail sex, and why Spielberg's technical failures made cinema history. We're sipping a 55% Petit Syrah blend with Merlot, Cabernet and a cheeky 5% Aligoté (yes, Aligoté!), talking oak and cinnamon, and wondering whether the grape's fruit-forward nose would match the surprisingly soft, dry sip. We reminisce about our first Jaws experiences, dissect the iconic two-note theme (you know the one), and praise the film's suspenseful genius born from broken mechanical sharks. There are quiz rounds, outfit descriptions (I'm the poodle in a fur coat — clearly), and a whole lot of drunk rambling about bull sharks, the USS Indianapolis, friendship foam, and sea-creature mating rituals that somehow led us to discuss third nipples and the best mid-'70s blazers. Classic season finale energy. If you love movie lore, bad-but-fun wine labels, and unfiltered sidebar chaos, this episode is a salty, sunburned treat. Grab something chilled (or cellar-temp) and come hang — we'll keep the people's court, the sidebar nonsense, and maybe even a special summer surprise if we remember. Until then: stay in the shallow end, cheers, and happy summer.

The 2026 Local Elections are set to be the most seismic the country has faced in a generation. Across all of Britain the old order is being thrown out of the window and the brave new world of six-party fragmentation will be laid bare for all to witness. This will, seemingly, come at the expense of the Labour Party, whose time in government hasn't been all too well recieved as of yet.In Wales, Plaid Cymru and Reform look set to displace Labour as the biggest parties in the Senedd. The SNP look to maintain their hold on Holyrood. And in England, the story of different places will be told – Reform look set to take large seats up and down, while the Greens target urban areas for their gains. One of the most significant of these is set to be London, where Labour's two-decade long stronghold looks to dissipate. To discuss all of this and provide a preview of the local elections, Compass' Deputy Director Lena Swedlow was joined by:Elly Baker, Labour London Assembly Member from the Londonwide list since 2021 and Labour group spokesperson for Transport.Laura Beveridge, Junior Political Correspondent at PoliticsJOE and Washington Post Stern-Bryan Fellow 2026.Support the showEnjoyed the podcast and want to be a live audience member at our next episode? BGMania B-Sides #42 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bedroth drops into Risk of Rain 2, the relentless roguelike shooter that turns isolation and chaos into an ever-escalating fight for survival. What starts as a quiet landing on an alien world quickly spirals into overwhelming waves of enemies, towering bosses, and that constant ticking pressure to move faster before the difficulty swallows you whole. The soundtrack matches that intensity beat for beat, fusing atmospheric ambience with driving percussion, soaring guitar lines, and synth textures that feel both futuristic and strangely human. Tracks build gradually, layering rhythm and melody until they erupt into cathartic climaxes that mirror the game's frantic momentum. It's music that thrives on tension and release, perfectly capturing the lonely vastness of an alien planet while pushing you forward into the storm. This first episode focuses on the first days after the shocking discovery that the Madoff multi-billion-dollar investment enterprise was a complete fraud. Unlike most Ponzi schemes, there were actually no investments at all in what on paper appeared to be a massive investment fund. Our guest, attorney David Sheehan of Baker & Hostetler LLP, is retained along with Irving Picard to begin the process of an orderly liquidation of the Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC. The enormity of the case is unveiled as David and his team learn that $64 billion in supposed investments have in fact never existed despite years of reports to investors that the funds were returning up to 17% profits annually.

What happens when three horror nerds who think too much throw on House of Wax and Thir13en Ghosts? Absolute chaos. That's what. This week we tried, and failed, to traverse two of our favorite horror films from the mid-2000s, only to spiral into oblivion trying to figure out how Jared Padalecki's face survives being ripped off (spoiler: it doesn't), debate whether Chad Michael Murray was secretly trying to hook up with his sister (ew), and spend way too much time wondering who the hell supplied Vincent with enough wax to build an entire two-story house in the Louisiana swamp. (Home Depot? Yankee Candle? Satan?)Then we dive face-first into Thir13en Ghosts, a movie where Tony Shalhoub basically gets tricked into living in a giant glass Rubik's Cube of Death while Matthew Lillard screams like he just stubbed his toe for 90 minutes. We argue about which ghost is the most effective, whether the lawyer's death by glass door is the greatest kill in horror history, and laugh over F. Murray Abraham being out-acted by a floating torso.Along the way, we spiral into:•The tragic marketing genius of “Come see Paris Hilton die!” shirts.•Why horror in the 2000s was peak teenage chaos (hello Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, Final Destination 2, and Wrong Turn).•Wax being the least sustainable building material unless you live inside a refrigerated Costco.•A slow-motion breakdown of Kurt Russell's mustache in Tombstone (because yes, we went there).Basically, it's horror movie night with zero adult supervision. If you're into horror hot takes, wax-based architecture criticism, and hearing three idiots laugh about Tony Shalhoub's ghost problems, hit play now.CREEP-O-RAMA is:Store: CREEP-O-RAMAYouTube: @creep-o-ramaJosh: @joshblevesqueArtwork: @bargainbinblasphemyTheme: @imfigureAudio:@stranjlove
