On Tuesday, Erie County Executive Brenton Davis returned to the TalkErie studio for his November monthly meeting, with the county budget and the recent general election hot topics.

Gannon University's Homecoming Weekend, and as two alumni make up the staff of TalkErie, we were given a personal tour of Gannon's new state-of-the-art iHack building. The innovative new field of study focuses on cyber security, and as the students learn, the whole community benefits from their expertise. The second Monday in October is recognized as Columbus Day. Joel talked to local leader Ron DiVecchio about the significance of Columbus Day for Italian Americans and the community in the west side of Erie known as Little Italy. On the Monday program, we welcomed back to the Joel Natalie Show Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper. She gave an update on the status of the application for the stand-alone Erie County Community College, and in the meantime made her best case for that proposed institution. It was another important conversation here on TalkErie.

Opioid addiction is a disease that does not discriminate on age, race, or financial status. On Thursday, we went searching for solutions and talking about the help that is available right here in Erie. We talked with Jessica Barr, executive director of Pyramid Healthcare Incorporated’s Erie Outpatient Office, to find out their process for helping those who are fighting this battle. Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook brought his perspective--and we heard about the harsh reality of addiction in Erie. Finally, Dr. Mandy Fauble, executive director at Safe Harbor Behavioral Health of UPMC Hamot, came in to our TalkErie.com studios to talk about their process for helping those who battle opioid addiction.

Our region is a hugely popular destination for fishing, and so Wednesday, we learned about the collaborative efforts among leading sportsmen, researchers, and conservation experts toward advancing the health and quality of our fisheries. This special program included the introduction of a collaboration between FishUSA and AFTCO in support of the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System (GLATOS), GLATOS is a network of researchers on both the American and Canadian borders of the Great Lakes who study how different fish species behave in these expansive bodies of water. Our guests included Justin DiRado, social media and community outreach manager for FishUSA, local fisherman and fishing boat captain, Pete Alex; Jerry Skrypczak from SONS of Lake Erie; Jeff Parnell, President and CEO of FishUSA; and TalkErie’s very own fishing consultant, FishUSA’s Brandon Ryan.
