Every Saturday at 4:07pm the meeting of the Steves commences. Fishing has been great especially with the unseasonably warm weather but he's finally putting his boat away and transitioning to ice fishing season. Carney says the duck gods continue to smite him or at the very least ignoring his existence.

Carney talks about the benefits of living in northwest Minnesota and all the natural coverage available to animals and how that translates to good hunting. Steve asks about upcoming fishing opportunities, Carney says the walleye fishing is incredible these days. He's still waiting on ducks to descend from the north, he's betting big this next week.

"Quietly ambitious and a bit unhinged." Somewhere in the Midwest, a talented young couple is quietly building an escape room empire. Their company, 60 to Escape, has over 12 different escape rooms across 3 locations, a puzzle-filled mini-golf experience, and a haunt so extensive and scenic that it was used as the set for a horror movie called Haunt Season on Amazon Prime. Stephen Kristof literally has entertainment in his blood. His parents owned a family entertainment center, and he grew up bouncing around mini-golf, go carts, and fixing the arcade machines. Growing up, Stephen always wanted to work at a haunt, but he was too young. So at the ripe young age of thirteen, he presented his parents with business plan for opening up his own haunt, and his first venture was born. In the course of running the haunt, they brought in a talented young SFX makeup artist named Stevie Calabrese (now Stevie Kristof). During haunt season, she manages four other artists as they get eighty performers into costumes and makeup in under two hours. Stephen and Stevie met, fell in love, and became "The Steves." They now run their immersive entertainment ventures together, crafting and creating much of it themselves, along with their team of talented folks. If either of them look familiar, you may have seen them on a reality show. Every Saturday at 4:07pm the meeting of the Steves commences. He pulled in a bunch of walleyes this morning but has had to thaw out in front of the fire which inspires him to share a deer story from the week. Carney also shares that he's not so good at reading directions. Also, Steve still doesn't know where the ducks are... he's still looking.

"The self-made man is a lie that we have taught people to keep them from complaining, to keep them from whining, to keep them from asking for better from their government, to keep them from asking for better from their employer." The two Steves – Hall and Grumbine – get together to dismantle the myth of the self-made man, exposing it as a centuries-old political weapon designed to disempower the working class. Professor Hall traces the roots of this "possessive individualism" back centuries, saying it is not a recent neoliberal invention but a deeply embedded cultural force with origins in changes in English law, specifically the spread of primogeniture (inheritance by the first-born son) in the 12th century. He goes on to explain the consequences of these historical events. The conversation reframes the American Dream as a form of mass gambling. Despite overwhelming evidence that most people fail, the system encourages a zero-sum mindset where we focus on the lottery-like winners. The Steves agree that facts alone won't break this spell. They discuss the need for a new emotionally compelling narrative that counters the right's fear-mongering. Steve Hall is Emeritus Professor of Criminology at the University of Teesside. He is a polymath who has published in the fields of criminology, sociology, anthropology, history, economic history, political theory and philosophy. He is also co-author of Violent Night (Berg 2006, with Simon Winlow), Rethinking Social Exclusion (Sage 2013, with Simon Winlow), Riots and Political Protest (Routledge 2015, with Simon Winlow, James Treadwell and Daniel Briggs), Revitalizing Criminological Theory (Routledge 2015, with Simon Winlow), The Rise of the Right (with Simon Winlow and James Treadwell) and The Death of the Left (with Simon Winlow). He is co-editor of New Directions in Criminological Theory (Routledge 2012, with Simon Winlow). Our weekly meeting of the Steves has arrived. Carney says the fishing is awesome right now, he's finding lots of fish in deep water but is surprised at the lack of other fishers. Duck season is still bad but deer hunting is picking up. Steve has one tag left and he's saving it for (hopefully) a buck. He anticipates “go time” this week for those of you who love a deer stand.

Art school Futurists and singalongs in Cooper's Bar, Denmark Street and suburbia's (two) ups and downs – and earbudded Londoners on the Tube, sailing away on their own private playlists. “In my head,” confides STEVE ‘AVO' LINDSEY, making his solo long-playing debut just five decades into his music career, “this sounds like a Nick Lowe album.”   But given that PING is the work of the Wirral-born bassist of DEAF SCHOOL and frontman of new wave chart act THE PLANETS who would later become a music exec known for his ears and acumen, it's hardly surprising that these twelve tracks offer more than just fond footnotes to Lowe.   Factor in Lindsey's love of Donald Fagen and Jimmy Webb, Arctic Monkeys and Tom Waits, Todd Rundgren and Nashville-style storytelling, and his lo-fi, groove-driven takes on Motown, and you'll have an idea of what to expect from this joyful, playful, gorgeously varied sheaf of love letters to music and Merseyside, sweaters and Swordfishtrombones.   Listen to tracks like the finger-clicking soul of ‘Beautiful 45' and the bottoms-up vaudeville of ‘Cheers My Dears', the rockaway baroque pop of ‘Royal Iris' and the sultry Latinisms of ‘To Know You Better', and you'll also hear warm and winning musical contributions from family and friends: Lindsey's daughter Uainín Lindsey on backing vocals; the late Tony ‘Wims' Wimshurst, ex-Planets and Nasty Pop, on lead guitar; and drummer Josh McCartney, the nephew of a local lad named Paul.   But first, some back story. When Deaf School invented itself in 1974 at Liverpool College of Art, Lindsey, one of two Steves in the band, modestly opted for the moniker Mr Average.
