The decision Lisa Hannum made back in 1998 to leave the world of large communications agencies and start her own, to find balance as both a mother and professional, proved prescient as she scaled through the years. It made her agency especially adaptable when the pandemic hit. Beehive Strategic Communication had always been a hybrid workplace, where employees knew they could get a haircut in the middle of the day without being judged. But flexible and responsive does not mean fully remote. Beehive opened a new office in late 2022 that prioritizes gathering space, wellness, and technology. Hannum expected employees to come in one or two times per week, but they're showing up even more than that, and clients want to meet at “The Hive” as well. Hannum walks us through the process of designing the office of the future, and creating a culture that makes employees feel trusted. “If you talk to your employees about flexibility and then don't deliver, they will leave,” Hannum says. “Our team is so invested in the space because they designed it. When we trust in our people, it is repaid in immeasurable ways.” There's no going back to the way work used to be, Hannum says. “We're wired for change. What we need to understand as leaders, regardless of if your company is micro sized or global, it's always about the people.” Following our conversation with Hannum, we go Back to the Classroom with Mike Porter, marketing professor at the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business, who discusses the importance of culture. “To the degree you have an established culture, you can take forward what's working,” Porter says. “If you don't have an established culture, be intentional about it.” Culture is your magnet, Porter says, and don't get hung up on catering to everyone. “You don't want everybody. You want the ones who want to play with the kinds of clients, work, environment you have. It's just a new variable in the way we do that.
In this episode, Dan connects with leading thinker and practitioner in the emerging communications technology space and Founder of Point 600, Brittany Paxman. Dan and Brittany sit down to chat about the importance of strategic communications and the ways technology is enhancing that importance and changing the profession. They discuss how communications technology - CommTech - helps communicators and the businesses they serve. The entire conversation is loaded with practical takeaways for anyone interested in this evolving field. Brittany Paxman dives headfirst into changing the world of communications. She is dedicated to bridging the gap between communications and technology to improve company functions and people's lives within the communications space. Tune in to learn more about the value of improving strategic communications by integrating technology to maximize consumer interactions, marketing, communications, sales, revenue, and other business interactions. In This Episode (1:41) Why Dan has been so keen to speak with Brittany (3:51) Brittany dives into her background and getting into the Comm-Tech space and starting her own firm (13:03) The “chicken and the egg” situation of integrating technology into communications (15:40) Why marketers understood the importance of technology integration sooner than communications experts (22:00) The qualitative vs. quantitative difference for approaching technology between marketing and communications (28:40) The roles of communications that often go unnoticed (36:43) The mindset shift needed to embrace modernized communications (45:44) The value of a communicator as an informed consumer of data (49:50) The framework for a modernized communicator ecosystem with CommTech (1:00:20) The evolution of the communications space with technology integration (1:09:24) Brittany's and Dan's suggestions for improving statistical prowess (1:12:24) Brittany's final words to Dan and the audience Notable Quotes “I really, at my core, believe in the power of communications to be a connector…Communications has such an important role, not just for organizations, but for society because it's the connector. It's the persuader, but it's also the opportunity for that information exchange for knowledge, argumentation to happen between companies and people, and I believe that is incredibly important.” - Brittany (4:30) “I think alot of communicators are burnt out. It is a field where you can be working 24/7, where we deal with crisis communication, where we deal with some of the most important things a company does and says…I think there is an opportunity for data and technology to make it a more sustainable profession where excellent people can stya in the profession and that we don't lose the talent to other areas…That's sort of the other half of the reason I started my company. I wanted to help communicators to not only survive, but thrive.” - Brittany (6:14) “Relationships are the domain of communications, like real relationships that matter because the other thing about communications - reputation, right? Looking at reputation, [that's our]...we are stewards of reputation. And as a steward of reputation, that's where crisis and things come in, we really started looking at how people are talking about us.” - Dan (21:14) “When I explain what I think communications is to people who are not in this industry at all, I think communications is definitely top of the funnel - beginning of the journey. But comms is also responsible for relationships with everyone who is not a customer.” - Brittany (28:43) “In my mind, technology, the mindset shift is not that technology is going to do everything for us, but that it's gonna take the stuff that's super repeatable that we are wasting mental capacity on and help us with that so that the communicators can spend their time being strategists.” - Brittany (38:57) About Brittany Brittany Paxman is a leading expert and thinker in the emerging field of communications technology with her company Point 600. She emphasizes data analysis, process design, and technology consulting for communications to build long-term success. With her decade of experience in digital communications, she developed her principles of Systems-Thinking, Data-Driven, and Technology-Enabled. Armed with these principles, she works tirelessly to provide the framework necessary to help communicators not just survive, but thrive in the modern world. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, December 14th.You can briefly end your hibernation on Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service there will be rain in the very beginning of the day in the Cedar Rapids area, but this will eventually give way to sunny skies and a high of 48 degrees. On Wednesday night it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of around 28 degrees.Former University of Iowa President Willard “Sandy” Boyd died Tuesday at the age of 95.Boyd was widely loved on campus and was instrumental in the university becoming what it is today. During Boyd's tenure as the UI's 15th president from 1969 to 1981, undergraduate enrollment exploded threefold from 8,400 to 25,100. Buildings that either opened or were planned on his watch nearly doubled the campus' size — including Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the Dental Science Building, College of Nursing, Bowen Science Building, Lindquist Center and Hardin Library for Health Sciences, according to the UI Office of Strategic Communication. The UI Hospitals and Clinics saw its footprint swell under Boyd, who collaborated with then-UIHC Director John Colloton on a then $500,000 plan to upgrade the facility. He also had a formative impact on Iowa athletics, along with the athletic directors he hired: Bump Elliott and Christine Grant. Coaches hired under his tenure include Dan Gable, Hayden Fry and Lute Olson. He was also part of the renaming of Iowa Stadium to Kinnick Stadium, initially suggesting the name Kinnick-Slater Stadium. The sprinkler system, smoke detectors and fire hydrants at a Marengo recycling facility were not working or had been disabled before an explosion and fire last week that injured about 15 people, authorities said. The State Fire Marshal and local law enforcement are interviewing people who worked at C-6 Zero to learn what sparked the fire that took more than 200 firefighters to extinguish as the neighborhood around the plant was evacuated. One of the questions officials are asking: Why weren't the sprinklers working?“I can confirm there were two fire hydrants on site that were not functioning,” Marengo Police Chief Ben Gray said. “There was no activation of indoor fire suppression system and I will confirm we are investigating that.”Iowa Administrative Code requires all “life safety equipment” including alarm and sprinkler systems to be “in operable condition at all times” for structures where they are required. Failure to do this can result in criminal charges, said Ron Humphrey, special agent in charge of the State Fire Marshal's Office.A Cedar Rapids woman convicted of a lesser charge in the fatal stabbing of her boyfriend in 2020 will not serve any additional prison time because she already served 891 days — almost 2 1/2 years — leading up to her trial.Sixth Judicial District Judge Kevin McKeever on Tuesday sentenced Jacqueline Holmes, 38, who originally was charged with first-degree murder, to up to five years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. However, he said that based on the law she had served enough time before her September trial, and he was discharging her.Holmes, following more than five days of testimony and a day and half of deliberations, was found guilty of unintentionally causing the death of boyfriend Tremaine Williams, 35, on March 4, 2020 after stabbing him in the shoulder.A retired Illinois law and psychology professor, who consults and testifies in cases involving domestic violence, said during the

The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (12/08/2022): 3:00pm- On Tuesday, President Joe Biden announced that his administration successfully negotiated the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner from a Russian detention center. Griner had been accused of carrying illegal vape cartridges. According to reporting from Jim Geraghty of The National Review, “at one point” Bout was “the second-most-wanted man after Osama bin Laden.” 3:15pm- During her Thursday press conference, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended the Biden Administration's decision to trade a dangerous arms dealer for a professional athlete in the U.S.-Russia prisoner swap. 3:35pm- On the U.S.-Russia prisoner swap, National Review's Jim Geraghty writes that other nations may now conclude, “the U.S. government will release anyone under enough pressure.” Does this exchange encourage other adversarial nations to wrongfully imprison American citizens, hoping that it can result in valuable concessions? 3:45pm- While appearing on CNN, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the U.S. National Security Council John Kirby emphasized that Paul Whelan—a Marine imprisoned in Russia—was “never a bargaining chip” for Viktor Bout. Why not? And, after releasing Bout, what bargaining chip does the Biden Administration have to encourage Whelan's release? 4:05pm- According to a report from Greg Wilson of The Daily Wire, “Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman helped broker the dramatic prisoner swap between the U.S. and Moscow that sprang WNBA star Brittney Griner from a Russian gulag, days after the Biden administration helped spike a lawsuit against the Saudi ruler.” 4:15pm- David Whelan, the brother of Marine Paul Whelan who has been wrongfully detained by Russia since 2018, told CNN that he and his family were incredibly happy to see Brittney Griner has been freed, but they obviously remain disappointed that Paul remains imprisoned. 4:40pm- Speaking with Martha MacCallum on Fox News, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the U.S. National Security Council John Kirby dismissed the idea that the Griner-Bout prisoner exchange encourages foreign adversaries to abduct Americans. 4:50pm- The Biden Administration's foreign policy blunders didn't start with a lopsided prisoner exchange with Russia. The New York Times released a video essay documenting America's abandonment of allies during the August 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. Despite being over a year later, tens of thousands of Afghan-allies remain stranded—with many being actively hunted by the Taliban. 5:00pm- While everyone is happy to see Brittney Griner finally released from an unjust Russian detainment, should the Biden Administration have been able to extract more concessions in exchange for Viktor Bout—an individual who, at one point, was considered the second-most wanted man in the world. Listeners react to the prisoner exchange. 5:15pm- During an interview with Variety, Jennifer Lawrence claimed that Hunger Games was the first time Hollywood featured a female actor in an action film. But what about Sigourney Weaver in Aliens, Linda Hamilton in Terminator, Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider…the list goes on and on... 5:30 pm- On CNBC, Harvard University professor Jason Furman—who served as an Economic Advisor in the Obama Administration—warned that a mild recession is likely to occur soon, though it won't necessarily resolve inflation. 5:50pm- The Mystery Movie Clip: Henry plays the whole movie… 6:05pm- During her Thursday press conference, White House Press Secretary referred to Brittney Griner as an “important role model” and defended the Biden Administration's decision to trade a dangerous arms dealer for a professional athlete in the U.S.-Russia prisoner swap. Will teacher Mark Fogel and Marine Paul Whelan ever be released from their unjust Russian imprisonment? 6:30pm- According to a report from The Daily Wire, a professor at Sacramento City College is under an internal investigation for being critical of “gender affirmation” surgeries being performed on children. 6:45pm- Disney released the trailer for the new Indiana Jones film: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
