About This EpisodeWhat if Boston's colonial past held witch trial stories just as gripping as Salem's but almost entirely overlooked? This week, Sarah and Josh sit down with D. Brenton Simons, President Emeritus and former CEO of American Ancestors (New England Historic Genealogical Society), to uncover the witches, criminals, and scandal-makers that Boston's official history left out.D. Brenton Simons spent 18 years leading American Ancestors, one of the world's foremost genealogical organizations with over 500,000 members in 139 countries. He is the author of Witches, Rakes, and Rogues, a collection of true Boston stories spanning 1630 to 1741, and was honored by King Charles III for his contributions to Anglo-American history.Boston had a witchcraft period spanning over a century, and the stories from it look nothing like what popular culture has taught us. Brenton walks us through cases that defy every stereotype, including a wealthy, well-connected woman whose "disagreeable" personality made her a target after her husband's death, an Irish Catholic servant whose foreign language and customs terrified a Puritan community, and women whose only real crime was practicing folk medicine and refusing to be pushed around. The research behind this book took five years and required digging through court records, personal diaries, and archives. The result is a portrait of real people navigating a world where the devil felt as immediate and dangerous as a neighbor's grudge. The woman who appears as a background character in The Scarlet Letter and the real, devastating story behind her nameHow the Goodwin children's afflictions during the Goody Glover case reveal something very human about fear and attentionThe connection between Mercy Short's post-traumatic experiences and the Salem trialsWhy the discovery of a black cat may have saved Boston from a second wave of witch huntingWhat happened to accusations that never became trials, and why those stories matter just as muchFor descendants of Boston and Connecticut witch trial victims, this episode is essential listening. Brenton discusses his research connecting Mary Hale, Winifred Benham Sr., and the Benham family line across generations and colonies. If you have colonial New England ancestry, you may have more connections to these stories than you realize.American Ancestors / New England Historic Genealogical SocietyAmerican Ancestors on YouTubeWitches, Rakes, and Rogues by D. Last month, a 39-year-old swimmer joined our weekly coaching members call. She was training for her first Ironman. She'd been swimming for about a year—consistent, disciplined, three sessions a week, following her program exactly as written. But there was a problem. She was exhausted after every session. And her pace hadn't improved in four months. In this episode, we unpack what was really going on—because when you're doing all the "right" things but not getting faster, it's rarely about working harder. It's about working smarter. We'll talk about why consistency alone isn't enough, the hidden mistakes that keep adult swimmers stuck, and how small technical and structural changes in your training can unlock real progress. If you're training for an Ironman—or any long-distance event—and feel like you're spinning your wheels in the water, this episode will show you what to look at, what to adjust, and how to start moving forward again. 01:19 From 2:10 to 1:55 Per Hundred 01:43 What Was Happening? 03:04 Getting A Good Catch 04:10 Think Of The Catch As The Set Up 05:53 Connect With The Water 06:54 What To Do? In this sharp and practical episode, Bart sits down with Brenton Nickles, founder of JDS1 Marketing, to break down what actually works in modern marketing — and what doesn't. Brent shares his journey from traditional marketing roles to building his own agency, helping businesses clarify their message, strengthen their brand, and execute consistently. He explains why most marketing efforts fail (lack of strategy, impatience, inconsistency), how attention is earned through value, and why long‑term positioning always beats short‑term tactics. This conversation cuts through the noise and offers a grounded, disciplined approach to marketing that leaders and entrepreneurs can immediately apply.Major Takeaways / LearningsMarketing is not a one‑time campaign — it's a system. Sustainable growth requires consistency.Clarity beats creativity. If people don't understand what you do, clever branding won't save you. Most businesses quit too early. Results compound over time — not overnight.Strategy must come before tactics. Posting content without direction wastes energy.Attention is currency. You earn it by solving real problems, not by being loud.Brand is built through repetition. Showing up consistently builds trust.Measure what matters. Data should inform decisions, not overwhelm them.Positioning determines growth. When you clearly define who you serve and how, momentum follows.Memorable Quotes“Marketing isn't magic — it's discipline.”“Clarity always beats clever.”“If you're not consistent, you're invisible.”“Strategy first. Tactics second.”“Attention has to be earned.”“You don't build trust in a week.” Why It Matters / How to Use ItThis episode is a reality check for entrepreneurs, leaders, and marketers who want results without the hype. Brent Nickles reinforces that growth doesn't come from chasing trends — it comes from clarity, discipline, and long‑term commitment. If you're frustrated by inconsistent results or overwhelmed by marketing options, this conversation offers a practical framework: define your strategy, commit to consistency, measure progress, and play the long game. Success in marketing — like success in leadership — is rarely flashy. It's built through disciplined repetition and clear positioning.Connect with Brenton over LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brenton-david-nickles/
A feedback pod today with some cracking messages to chat through. We start with a couple on the Australian Open cancellation, on day one, that Nick and Mark spoke about recently. Raymond has written in and he was caddying that day, and remembers it very clearly, he runs through what he was seeing on the day. And Brad, who narrowly missed qualifying for the Open that year and went along with his wife to watch the tournament - unfortunately the day was, obviously, cut short!Phillip has some news on the Australian Women's Open which he asks Nick to confirm, or otherwise.McDougal has a view on this weeks comments about The Players Championship. Mark heard us discussing conceding holes last week and Nick and Mark noting how rare it is, he points out a very famous occasion from an Aussie! Andrew listened to Nick and Mark's 7 predictions, and has a prediction of his own.And after the turn, we review the putting technique of journalist and wolfpacker Jon Ralph who was playing with Mark last week, and was caught on camera putting to save par. We ask Nick O'Hern to analyse Ralphy's putting technique. Is he impressed or underwhelmed?Kevin from Vietnam writes to Nick with his views on the courses in that country, Nick knows it well having played golf there a number of times. And we read a note from Brenton of the Woodburn-Evans Head Golf Club in NSW who recently had a significant theft at the club, and are putting on a great day in March to raise funds for recovery. There's a timing pattern that separates fast swimmers from slow swimmers—and most people never see it. You can watch someone swim in real time and miss it completely. But slow the video down, frame by frame, and suddenly it's obvious. Every fast swimmer has this. A lot of slower swimmers don't. And when you fix this one timing detail, it doesn't just make you smoother—it feels like someone just switched the engine on in your stroke. In today's episode, I'm going to break down exactly what that timing pattern is, why it matters so much, and most importantly, how you can actually feel it in the water so it shows up in your own swimming. 00:52 Waiting Too Long To Begin The Catch 02:29 Begin Catch Earlier 03:22 Back Off The Power 04:10 Early Connection 05:31 How Do We Fix It? 08:09 What To Do?

I watched a swimmer fix one breathing mistake and drop 12 seconds per 100 meters—not in four months, but in four weeks. No extra fitness. No added training volume. Just one specific change in how she breathed. That single adjustment took her from 1:48 per 100 down to 1:36 per 100. In this episode, I break down exactly what she changed, why it worked so fast, and how you can apply the same breathing fix in your very next swim—whether you're training for endurance, speed, or just want to stop feeling rushed every time you turn your head to breathe. If your breathing feels like the limiter in your freestyle, this episode will change how you swim. 01:45 Head Lifted Forward Out Of The Water 03:49 Correction No. 1 Your Head Should Be Like An Iceberg 04:32 Correction No. 2 Exhaling Ender Water Mostly Through Your Nose 05:14 Correction No. 3: Breathing Every 2 or 3 Strokes and Learn To Breathe On Both Sides.

Brenton Fessler joins Dr. Sandie Morgan as they explore why teenagers aren't hiding their digital lives because they're rebellious—they're hiding because they don't feel safe talking, and what trusted adults do next can change everything.Brenton FesslerBrenton Fessler is the Lead Pastor of Refuge OC Church in Orange County, California, where he provides vision and leadership for a growing faith community with a strong emphasis on family, discipleship, and community responsibility. With a background in youth ministry and ministry education, Brenton brings deep experience working with adolescents, parents, and church leaders navigating the complexities of formation, trust, and safety in a digital age. In addition to his pastoral leadership, Brenton has taught ministry-related courses and mentored emerging youth pastors, equipping them to build relationally healthy, developmentally appropriate, and ethically grounded ministry environments. As a parent of teenagers himself, he offers a practical, lived perspective on the challenges families face around technology, online identity formation, and risk exposure. Brenton's work reflects a prevention-first, relational approach rooted in grace, accountability, and collaboration between parents, churches, and broader community systems.Key PointsYouth pastors hold a unique position of trust with teenagers, making them critical partners in digital safety conversations, as students often confide in them before approaching parents about risky online behavior. The scaffolding metaphor illustrates healthy digital boundaries—parents and church leaders provide temporary support structures that can be removed as young people demonstrate increasing responsibility, rather than permanent fences. When a 14-year-old discloses risky online behavior, youth pastors should offer to walk alongside them in conversations with parents rather than protecting confidentiality at all costs, because these young people need adult guidance to navigate complex situations safely.Youth ministry should focus on spiritual formation and relationship building rather than behavior modification, creating environments where students feel safe to make mistakes and receive grace while learning to live righteously.Churches need to update child protection policies to include digital and virtual environments with the same rigor as physical spaces, including background checks that examine volunteers' online presence and social media activity.Youth pastors serve as cultural missionaries within church staffs, helping senior pastors understand emerging technologies, social media platforms, and the realities of youth culture that shape the next generation's spiritual development. The "talk tech every day" initiative from Ensure Justice emphasizes that digital safety conversations must be ongoing and integrated into daily family life, not reactive responses to scary news articles.Building cross-generational trust requires two-way mentoring where students teach adults about technology while adults provide wisdom and boundaries, creating healthy churches where both generations learn from each other.ResourcesInfluence Magazine Winter 2025 IssueEpisode 354: Love Bombs and Long Cons: Understanding Pig Butchering ScamsEnsure Justice ConferenceRoyal Family Kids CampRefuge OC ChurchTranscript[00:00:00] Brenton Fessler: The youth pastor decided that the best way forward was to actually call her up on stage and have her publicly announce her pregnancy so he could shame her as if behavior modification was gonna be the true path to her healing.[00:00:15] But[00:00:15] Delaney: Teenagers aren't hiding their digital lives because they're rebellious. They're hiding because they don't feel safe talking. What trusted adults do next can change everything. In this episode, you'll hear why talk tech every day matters. How to set guardrails without shame and what to do when a teen says, I can't tell my parents.[00:00:35] Hi, I'm Delaney. I'm a student here at Vanguard University and I help produce this show. Today, Sandie Talks with Dr. Brenton Fessler. He's the lead pastor of Refuge OC in Orange County with years of youth ministry experience and mentoring youth leaders focused on digital safety and trust building with teens.[00:00:54] Now here's their conversation.[00:00:57][00:01:03] Sandie Morgan: Reverend Dr. Brenton Fessler, welcome to the Ending Human Trafficking Podcast.[00:01:10] Brenton Fessler: Thank you, Sandie. It is so good to be with you and I'm delighted. I hope I can add to the conversation, but I'm really honored to be here.[00:01:18] Sandie Morgan: This isn't the way I usually do this, Brenton. But you read the article that they published in Influence Magazine under the youth pastor column, and the concern is digital safety for our kids.[00:01:35] So when you read that, did you have a question? Wow. If I could talk to Dr. Sandie Morgan. This is what I'd ask her.[00:01:45] Brenton Fessler: Ooh, that's a good point. No, I was captivated by the research right off the bat, mainly because in addition to being a pastor that obviously oversees a youth team that interacts with students in junior high and high school. I've got three teenagers in my house. One is about to turn 20 in just a few months.[00:02:02] But I care about this issue deeply because my wife, Rachel, and I are always thinking about where are they being exposed? And you said, so I just highlighted a few things from the article about how they're forming their identity in this online atmosphere in ways that parents don't fully understand or grasp the impact of that.[00:02:23] And I was blown away.[00:02:25] Sandie Morgan: It's difficult for parents to really, truly comprehend because we're not living in that context and we're all in the same house. Yet our challenges are very different. So, and for listeners, I'm gonna put a link to the article in the winter issue of Influence Magazine. So you'll be able to read this and maybe it'll raise some questions and.[00:02:57] I would recommend is you don't necessarily ask me because this is a foreign language for me as well. but talk to your teenagers. We've got to have daily, a couple years ago at Ensure Justice, what everybody was saying by the end of Saturday is talk tech. Every day. Not once a week, not when somebody reads a scary article, but talk tech every day.[00:03:29] Kids, you need to make sure your parents understand. You need to make sure your grandparents, wow, Brenton. If you wanna be concerned, go back and listen to the podcast I did about pig butchering, which is how AI is being used to fraudulently steal from your grandmother[00:03:56] and so grandkids you can have a trade-off day where grandkids, teach grandparents how to be safe online.[00:04:06] Brenton Fessler: Right. Oh, so true. So true. It's a scary world. And even as a parent, I think about the moments where we first dropped our kids off at school when they were in preschool, and we trusted them to this world that we no longer controlled. And it's the same way, even as teenagers, we give them these devices and in a lot of ways, they ...
