Bible Reading: James 2:14-18Sydney was trying on her new school clothes when her mom looked into the room. "How are you liking the clothes we ordered online?" Mom asked. "Do they fit?""I like them a lot, and all the shirts and pants fit," Sydney said. "But these shoes are too small--my feet must have grown over the summer." "Those shoes are really cute though," said Maggie, her older sister. "All the girls are wearing them.""Well, I'm glad you like the shirts and pants," Mom said. "We'll send back the shoes and get the next size up. Now come on. It's time for devotions." So Sydney set her things aside, and the girls joined their parents in the living room. When Dad asked for prayer requests, Sydney thought of something. "This afternoon I was playing with Ella next door, and I noticed her shoes are worn out--there's actually a hole in the sole of one of them! Let's pray that Ella will get some new shoes.""We'll do that," said Dad. "And let's pray that her dad will be well again soon and able to find a new job."As Sydney prayed for Ella, she had a funny feeling she was forgetting something. She still felt that way as she put her new clothes in the closet. Even when she crawled into bed, the feeling stayed with her. What am I forgetting? she wondered as she stared into the dark. I think Idid everything I was supposed to do today. I finished my chores before going to Ella's, and after dinner Maggie and I did the dishes. During devotions, Dad read some verses about showing our faith in Jesus by helping people who need food or clothes. Then I shared a prayer reque-- Sydney sat right up and almost laughed out loud. That's it! She jumped out of bed and ran to the living room. "Guess what!" she exclaimed. "I think God wants me to be the answer to our prayer and give Ella the shoes that don't fit me. Her feet are a little smaller than mine, so I think they'll fit her. Then I can buy a pair in my size with my own money."Mom and Dad looked surprised. Then Mom smiled. "Sydney, what a great idea!" -Barbara J. WestbergHow About You?Are you asking God to do something for someone else? Do you want poor people money issues, or rich people money issues?" That night changed her life. Moneeka’s parents came to this country with only $200 in their pockets and a dream to create a better life for their family. Dad had heard that the golden ticket to wealth in the United States was to invest in real estate, so as soon as he could he bought a home. Then Mom and Dad saved their nickels and dimes to buy their first rental property. They bought several more and 18 years later, paid for the college educations of their 3 daughters, and then they paid for our weddings.   Warren Buffett says "If you can't control your emotions, you can't control your money." Single people, like short people, got no reason to live. Whether or not you agree with this depends on whether or not you attend church and are a single person. Peaches and I discuss single status and Christianity. We analyze the use of the word 'single' when the word 'divorced' is more accurate. We're not saying it's dishonest but it's not honest.  Peaches tries to explain that married people are like paper glued together. She's weird like that. We think divorce isn't something to celebrate. We think it's kinda sad and painful and awkward.   We puzzle over how some people talk about divorce like it's a force of nature. Then I worry about incurring the wrath of my mom again. (Mom comes later in the podcast and she's not too mad. She gives me a Christmas present!)  I start contradicting myself because, as usual, I start talking before I finish thinking.  Then I just keep talking.  And I admit my undying affection for single people.   Sometimes single people yell at me for not talking about single people when I'm speaking at marriage conferences.  And if you're single, and still listening, I'm impressed!  I've offended myself multiple times already. If you're feeling disconnected, maybe the problem is yours. Maybe... Maybe...single people can still treat other people like a spouse.  (It doesn't mean what you're thinking.) Then I talk about Brad. And he makes me kinda sad.  Sad Brad.   THEN... BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND --- GRANDMA TURBO!   She readily admits her age. Then she tells me why I shouldn't have asked. The two of us exchange Christmas gifts because our family is horribly disorganized. I ask my mom where I was made and it wasn't "China". She doesn't get more specific.  Mandy books my rental car for an upcoming trip and gives Hertz our home number as a fax number. We spend the rest of the conversation answering the stupid phone.  Thanks, Peaches.   Then Mom tells us about taking a bus trip. That's what old people do. I make fun of my dear mother for this and then Peaches reminds me that my wife actually OWNS a bus. We're such hicks.  Then we talk about Mom feeling alien as a single person in church. We talk about my Dad (who will probably appear on the podcast at some point...when I work up the nerve.)  Emmi runs out of cereal and makes some strange noise.  My mom essentially calls me a heartless machine. Turbo gets a little emotional which makes me squeamish and confirms the accuracy of the 'heartless' accusation.    Hertz!  Stop calling me!  I don't have a fax machine!   Mom says she repeats her mistakes. I'm curious if I'm one of those mistakes. She says 'no', but that's what moms are supposed to say.  We try to figure out how to determine which events in our lives are mistakes. Mom quotes Aslan, who isn't even a human (or real).    We finally block Hertz.   Everybody on Earth is in a relationship with everyone else on Earth. Mind blown. Mom's are experts at feeling like failures. Relax and enjoy some Necco wafers.

Miss Kitty is my teacher. She is the best teacher ever! She reads stories to us at story time and makes them fun. Sometimes she puts on a silly costume. She teaches math and makes it exciting. Sometimes she brings special treats just for us. We go on field trips, and we sing songs on the bus. When we went to the zoo, she told us all about the animals. Did you know that elephants flap their ears to keep cool? I wish I could do that. I wanted to do something special for Miss Kitty on teacher appreciation day. I asked Dad, "But what can I do?" I went to Dad's shop to make her something really special. Dad showed me all his tools. But using them looked too hard. Later Mom took me to the mall. I found just the right present. Mom said, "I don't think Miss Kitty would really like a Robot Critter-zilla." Probably not, but I would. "Please, Mom?" I asked. "No," Mom said. Then Mom said, "How about we bake her something?" I liked that idea. We drove home. Mom made my favorite cake for Miss Kitty. I helped. I put my cake on the table in the front hall so I wouldn't forget it in the morning. I was all set for teacher appreciation day. I woke up early and ran downstairs. But my cake was on the floor. The dog had eaten most of it. "I bet Miss Kitty would love a big bouquet of flowers," said Mom. She quickly cut a bunch from the garden. Then she wrapped a ribbon around them. "Here you go," she said. "And hurry. The bus is almost here." I ran out the front door with my bouquet of flowers for Miss Kitty. On the bus everyone had big presents in big boxes wrapped in pretty bows. My present didn't look so good. I hid it under my seat. I was almost to my classroom when I noticed that I forgot my flowers on the bus. The bus was leaving. Oh, no! What am I going to do now? I thought. I ran to the back of the classroom. I got out my drawing pad and drew the quickest, best picture ever. When it was my turn, I walked up to the front of the class. With everyone looking at me... ...I gave my picture to Miss Kitty. She smiled. Then she put it up on her bulletin board. Mine was the only picture up there. What a great present... ...for the best teacher ever.

My baby sister always says no. One day my friend came over to play. But my baby sister wouldn't leave us alone. We started to make a model boat, but my baby sister said, "NO BOAT!" We wanted to make a blanket tent, but my baby sister said, "NO BLANKET!" I tried to give her one of her dolls, but she wasn't interested. She said, "NO DOLL!" "Let's play our favorite board game," my friend said. But my baby sister said, "NO GAME!" We went into my room and shut the door. But my sisiter said, "NO SHUT!" Then Mom made me open the door. We ran outside, but my sisiter said, "NO RUN!" and followed us. I sat on my swing, but my sister said, "NO SWING!" We tried to play ball, but my sister said, "NO BALL!" I thought if I sat on her bike, she might forget about the ball. But she didn't care. She said, "NO BIKE...BALL!" and she carried it off. We didn't want to play with her tricycle, anyway. So we came back inside to play cards. But my sister said, "NO CARDS, NO CARDS!" So I got out my favorite cars and trucks. But guess who said, "NO CARS, NO TRUCKS!" We decided to watch cartoons instead, but my sister said, "NO TOONS!" So I yelled, "MAMA!" Then Mama said, "NAP!" But my sister said, "NO NAP!" But Mama always wins, and my sister took a nap.

I am a big boy. I know how to use the potty. I have underpants with skateboards on them. My little sister is still a baby. She wears diapers. I like to play with my sister. But sometimes she smells funny and Mom has to change her diapers. One day Mom said, "It's time for Little Sister to use a potty." I thought that was a good idea. We went to the store to get a potty chair for my sister. Mom picked out a pink one. When we got home, my little sister wanted to carry the new potty inside by herself. But she wouldn't sit on it. She cried instead. Mom said, "She's scared." I knew that. So I sat on the potty first. Then my sister wasn't scared anymore. I got her a book to read. Then she didn't want to get off the potty at all. Mom took the potty downstairs so my little sister could sit on it while she watched TV. That was weird. My sister sat on her potty while she ate dinner. Later she sat her doll on the potty. She tried to sit my monkey on it, but I wouldn't let her. That night my little sister slept with the potty beside her bed. In th morning, Mom sat my little sister on the potty without her diaper. My sister read her book. Then she used the potty. Mom hugged her while she was still sitting on the potty, but I didn't. Then Mom put new underpants on my little sister. "You look so cute," Mom said. I didn't think she looked any cuter than me. We played in the sandbox. I noticed that some of the sand was wet, so I called Mom. While Mom was doing laundry, my little sister said, "Potty." Mom asked me to take her. My sister missed the potty and got the floor wet. We called Mom. The next time my little sister went to the potty, she did it just right. We were proud of her. Now that my little sister can use the potty, Mom and Dad say she is a big girl. But I think she still acts like a baby. Sometimes.

We went shopping. We went to the food store. I got to push the cart. It was heavy, but not too heavy. "I want to ride," said my little sister. "Don't you think you are too big to ride?" asked Mom. "No," said my little sister. I had to push her, too. Then the cart was very heavy. I picked some apples for Mom. My little sister picked a red plum. But she ate it. I think Mom was mad. My little sister grabbed a big bag of candy. Mom said, "Not today." Mom said, "Stay here. I will be right back." I turned around and my little sister was gone. I looked and looked, but I didn't know where she could be. I found her back at the candy. I tried to make her come with me. She said, "No!" Then Mom found both of us. I think she was mad. My little sister said, "I want candy." Mom said, "I told you, no candy today. Would you like to go to time-out instead?" We walked by some books. We each got to pick out one. We walked by some toys. My little sister said, "I want the yellow duck." Mom said, "You don't need the yellow duck." "I really need a red pail," said my little sister. "No!" said Mom. Mom wanted paper towels. My little sister pulled out a roll from the bottom of the pile. Everything fell down. The man who owned the store didn't look too happy. Mom paid for everything. We took the food to the car. My little sister said, "I want ice cream." I said, "I want ice cream, too." Mom said, "Not now. We have another place to go." We walked back to the mall. We passed by the backery. My little sister said, "I want cake." "Not today," said Mom. We passed by the pet store. "I want a kitty," said my little sister. "But you already have a kitty," said Mom. We passed by the toy store. "I want a doll," said my little sister. "No," said Mom. "You need a new dress." We walked into the dress store. Mom picked out a dress. My little sister tried it on. Mom said, "Doesn't she look sweet?" I said, "Yes." Mom bought the dress. Then we all went to get an ice-cream cone...finally. That was the best part.

Mom had some car issues then got it fixed and dreams of a newer car, but not a van this time (drink!). She also spent a lot of time hanging out with friends and started seeing a new guy we're going to call "R". He was a nice guy and Mom liked him but she really wanted to make sure that he liked us boys and (most importantly) that we liked him. Then Mom celebrated her 22nd birthday with friends and her new guy the weekend before.

The Kendra's Journal Podcast

May 22, 1978 - June 29, 1978 We talk about how "nice" sunburns are. Mom and dad celebrated their Fourth Anniversary by going out to a steak house courtesy of Mom's parents and sister. Then Mom worked at the hotel, but not for too long! She ended up getting a job at the State Hospital in Pendleton and passed her CNA test with a 95%! Not too bad for someone who was afraid of taking tests. There was a very scary incident with Phillip, a pen and his eye but in the end everything worked out. We spent a lot of time with Grandma and Grandpa Cornwell and dad had a very slim chance of an opportunity to get a job with the Steel Workers Union.

November 16 - December 6, 1977 Mom started this one with an announcement from Aunt Shannon. A new cousin was on the way! Mom hoped for a girl but it ended up being a boy, our cousin Keith (obviously several months later, we'll get to it). Then Mom prepared for Phillip's third birthday party. She also mentioned her worries about what smoking will eventually do to her. Phillip's third birthday happened on a Tuesday and that Thursday was Thanksgiving it was celebrated in Hermiston where we "feasted on everything under the sun". Gramma Cornwell was always a great cook. Mat's trouble with bronchitis started around this time and there was talk of moving back to Pendleton.

The Kendra's Journal Podcast

September 11, 1977 - September 21, 1977 Another episode that covers about 10 days. I think we're really getting into a grove here! We start this one eating Kentucky Fried Chicken, not KFC, this was before that. We also get accepted to move into the projects. Then Mom obsesses a little more about her dream van. She admits Mat's the mean one then I admit why he was always mean. Big brother was a bit sneakier (and meaner) than she knew. On a slightly prophetic and really sad note, Mom talks about quitting smoking and wonders what will happen to her if she doesn't. A little bit later she even talks about how she wants to die, quickly and quietly. She got part of her wish, it was quiet. She says she'll never regret it if she never gets to see New York City, I think later in her life she was glad she got to go, she mentioned to us that she always had fun there. Mom's Grandpa Heffley passed away around this time too. He was in Reno waiting for his son, my Grampa Bob, so he could attend the wedding between Grampa Bob and Charlotte. And then I prove to be the genius in the group by putting my shoes on the correct feet at three years old. I guess it didn't take much to impress Mom!
