The European Union is finalising its 20th sanctions package against Russia, while the United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly backed a resolution supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Today (24th February) marks the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine — a war that began in 2014 with the seizure of Crimea and has since become one of the defining geopolitical conflicts of our time. Over the weekend, Ukraine again faced waves of drone and missile attacks, while European foreign ministers meeting in Brussels struggled to agree a new sanctions package. US-brokered talks in Geneva have stalled, and questions remain about what happens next. Meanwhile, Cabinet Ministers are convening, ahead of a special meeting of European leaders to mark four years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Taoiseach Michael Martin is expected to commit to advancing Ukraine's EU membership, when Ireland holds the EU Presidency later this year. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will address the world later on today, via video link with the European Parliament. To discuss the global political picture and the local impact here in Clare, Alan was joined by Professor Donnacha Ó Beachain of Dublin City University, a native of Newmarket-on-Fergus and expert in post-Soviet politics, and Mariya Nikishanova, originally from Irpin in Ukraine and living in Ennis for more than a decade. Today marks the fourth anniversary of Russian forces mounting a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Peace efforts to date have yielded little results, with casualties climbing day after day. EU Ambassador to New Zealand Lawrence Meredith told Mike Hosking Europe's recognising it needs to do more in terms of defence. He says the Ukrainians are not just fighting for their own peace and freedom, but for that of the free world. Meredith says this is a global conflict and it's important the right side wins. For the Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast's fourth-anniversary show, I am honored and privileged to welcome Anne Trujillo as my guest. I first met Anne when I interned at KMGH-TV ABC 7 News in Denver during my final semester at the University of Colorado at Boulder during the 2010-2011 school year. After graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Anne Trujillo began her career at Denver7 as a general assignment reporter. She worked her way up the ranks, covering stories from the Columbine and Aurora theater shootings to the Democratic National Convention in Denver to three Broncos' Super Bowl appearances. Anne is an Emmy award-winning broadcast journalist. Her reporting and anchoring skills have been recognized numerous times by the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences, the Colorado Broadcasters Association, The Associated Press and Women in Communications. Throughout her career, Anne has been active in the community, volunteering for boards and non-profit organizations and frequently serving as emcee for events. Anne is Co-President of the Colorado Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. She is a member of journalism advisory councils at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Metropolitan State University. After almost 40 years covering Colorado's news, shaping generations of journalists at Denver7, and being Denver's longest-serving continuous evening news anchor, Anne said she would sign off from the station this fall. “After much reflection, I have decided to step away from my role as evening news anchor in November,” said Anne Trujillo in an August 3 news story. “It's time for me to leave Denver7 and pursue the next chapter of my life – one that allows me the flexibility to pursue new passions as well as my time with my family.” On the fourth anniversary episode of the podcast, Anne reflected on how broadcast journalism has evolved since she started and shared her thoughts on the most memorable news stories she covered in her career.
