"The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" was a hardboiled detective radio series based on Raymond Chandler's iconic private eye. Unlike many other detective shows of the era, it was known for its serious tone, with fewer lighthearted moments. The show premiered on NBC in June 1947 as a summer replacement for Bob Hope, titled "The New Adventures of Philip Marlowe," starring Van Heflin. The first episode adapted Chandler's short story "Red Wind," and the NBC run concluded in September 1947.In 1948, the series moved to CBS and was renamed "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe," with Gerald Mohr taking on the lead role. This CBS version also began with a different adaptation of "Red Wind." By 1949, it had become the most popular radio program. The CBS series aired for 114 episodes, from September 1948 to September 1950.From July to September 1951, the show briefly returned as a summer replacement for "Hopalong Cassidy," with Mohr reprising his role, except for one episode in 1950 featuring William Conrad.A notable episode, "The Birds on the Wing" (November 26, 1949), famously broke the fourth wall at both the beginning and end. Marlowe mentions reading Chandler's latest novel, "The Little Sister," and in the conclusion, Gracie Allen asks Marlowe to find a radio show for her husband, George Burns.Lyn Murray composed the program's music. The theme used in the first two NBC episodes, where Marlowe narrates the opening of Chandler's "Red Wind," later became a prominent motif in Murray's score for Alfred Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief" (1954).Despite its popularity, "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" lacked consistent sponsorship, with only brief periods supported by Ford Motor Company and Wrigley's Gum in 1950.Raymond Chandler had minimal involvement with the radio series, content with the weekly royalties for his character's use and expressing moderate satisfaction with Gerald Mohr's portrayal of Marlowe. The first NBC episode's script was by Milton Geiger, which Chandler found "thoroughly flat." The CBS version, produced and directed by Norman Macdonnell, was better received. The writing team for the CBS series included Gene Levitt, Robert Mitchell, Mel Dinelli, and Kathleen Hite, with music by Richard Aurandt and Roy Rowan as the announcer. The cast alongside Gerald Mohr featured actors such as Jeff Corey, Howard McNear, Parley Baer, Lawrence Dobkin, Virginia Gregg, Gloria Blondell, and Lou Krugman.

In this episode of The Impostor Podcast, Burso is back on the couch with the absolute madman himself — Sam Wride — a former soldier turned armored brawler, fitness coach, Warhammer nerd, and part-time Twitch goblin. What starts as a messy chat about cake, clapping, and dodgy audio syncs quickly spirals into a full-blown ride through Sam's chaotic content creator life. He's hurt his ankle (again), but instead of resting like a normal person, he's throwing on some armor, launching a Twitch channel, and screaming at his mate Josh during Warhammer matches like it's the World Cup.“The ruler never lies,” Sam says — just before accusing Josh of cheating live on stream.Spoiler: Twitch chat was the judge. It got heated. We talk losing 7,000 followers, why being funny on Instagram doesn't pay, and why TikTok is just a flashy portfolio for sponsors who'll never pay you in cash, but might send you a t-shirt. Sam's building a bunch of YouTube channels: BooHurt fighting, tactical shooting, camping, and a Warhammer one “so nerdy it might cause shrinkage.”There's also a potential TV gig in the pipeline (“rhymes with Little Sister”), a chat about whether Heston Russell is the most elite bloke on earth, and the realization that commentating on medieval sport in full kit is the real dream job.Other gems include:Sam's $11-a-week fitness program that helps Buhurt warriors, future soldiers, and probably a few broken tradies. The idea of filming a two-man podcast in an ice bath (“Kevin Hart did it, we can do it. Just need to squish in.”)Burso accidentally riding an unregistered bike for 3 years — until a mate dobbed him in mid-ride.Discovering a new Australian combat sport that literally allows headbutts and chokes, but bans sucker punches. Episode No. 689 is a holiday clips episode featuring artist B. Ingrid Olson. Olson's work is included in "Descending the Staircase" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The exhibition considers novel artistic approaches to representing the human body. The exhibition is curated by Jadine Collingwood, Associate Curator, and Jack Schneider, Assistant Curator and is on view through July 6. This episode was recorded in 2022 on the occasion of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University's presentation of two concurrent B. Ingrid Olson exhibitions, “History Mother,” and “Little Sister.” Each exhibition was on a separate floor of CCVA's building. Olson's exhibitions feature site-specific presentations that engage with doubling and mirroring, gendered forms, the interplay between photography and sculpture, and between the body and the built environment. The exhibitions were curated by Dan Byers. The week this show originally aired, the Secession in Vienna had just closed an exhibition of Olson's work titled “Elastic X.” In addition, Olson's work has previously been featured in solo presentations at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY and at The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. My jaw hit the floor when Catherine O'Hara, comedic genius, said she used to tell her ideas to Dave Thomas so he could pitch them to their SCTV group instead of her. Catherine O'Hara?! One of the most innovative performers we have, had as much trouble getting ideas out in a meeting as a lot women have?! She was on a podcast, telling this to Julia Louis-Dreyfus, a similarly remarkable comedic mind, who then shared that she, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, still, after decades of comedic accomplishments, has to push herself to pitch her ideas. These are two of the greats. Both of them came up in groups where they were often one of two women in groups of men and surprise, surprise, experienced the same sort of difficulties many women have encountered. In these ensembles where the competition was for the funniest bit, the most effective laugh, they managed to succeed but it sounds like it was not easy. It sounds like they experienced a lot of something I've come to call The Little Sister Effect. To keep reading The Little Sister Effect, visit the Songs for the Struggling Artist blog. Hey, it's an off week for the podcast, but here I am anyway. This is Scott Johnson, and you're listening to What Was That Like. Usually I have a guest on to talk about something really unusual that they experienced – like having their arm torn off, or being buried in an avalanche, or witnessing a murder. The guest comes on and tells the details of what happened. And there are more than 190 episode to binge with those amazing stories. But today is a different kind of amazing story! Today's a bonus episode. As you might know, the last three Fridays have been personal stories of people who survived the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Those are really important stories to share, to make sure we never forget what happened on that day. But after three weeks of tragedy and trauma, I thought it would be nice to have a FUN episode. And this one fits that bill perfectly. Today you're going to hear from a mother, Kiona, and her oldest daughter, Kavina. Kiona is a birth worker, and she's been involved with or witnessed more than 140 births. She has a podcast called Birth As We Know It, where guests come on and tell their stories about birth. Well – in one of her episodes, Kiona interviewed her daughter Kavina, who was just 9 years old at the time of their conversation. When she was 4, Kavina was present for the birth of her younger brother, Kairo. And when she was 8, Kavina actually caught her little sister, Katana, as she was born. So today, you'll hear Kiona's podcast episode where she talked with little Kavina about what it was like for each of those experiences. I can tell you up front, this conversation will make you smile. In the show notes I'll have pictures of Kiona with her husband Kumar and all their children (yes, everyone in their family has a name that starts with K – including their dogs Kobe and Koko). So I hope you enjoy this adorable mother-daughter conversation. And afterward, I spoke with each of them briefly because you know I always have some questions. The menu features dishes like hummus, falafel, and kabobs, with Usman's favorites being Palestinian mhammar and beef shawarma. Previously, Usman ran a restaurant in Michigan before moving to Gwinnett County. Since opening in February, Raik has become a vibrant part of Suwanee's dining scene, offering outdoor seating and a full bar near Town Center. We'll be back in a moment Break 3: Lilburn Daze (09.13.24 LILBURN DAZE_FINAL_REV 3) – INGLES 9 (Ingles Markets (What To Add To Diets) 9) STORY 6: UPDATED CLOSINGS: Gwinnett County Government Offices Closed On Friday Due to severe weather, all Gwinnett County Government offices, except essential services, will be closed today. Residents are advised to avoid roads due to strong winds and potential flooding. Closures include all Gwinnett County Public Library branches, Georgia Gwinnett College classes, and the GGC Preview Day. Gwinnett County Courts have canceled hearings and trials, except for first appearances at the Detention Center. The Animal Welfare's Return to Community Cat Program and all Health and Human Services senior centers will also be closed. The Tax Commissioner offices closed early on Thursday and will remain closed today. STORY 7: Georgia Supreme Court disqualifies West, De la Cruz from presidential ballot Presidential candidates Cornel West and Claudia De la Cruz will appear on Georgia's Nov. 5 ballot, but their votes won't count due to a Georgia Supreme Court ruling. The court upheld lower court decisions that their electors filed improper nominating petitions. Consequently, only four candidates—Donald Trump, Kamala Harris, Libertarian Chase Oliver, and Green Party's Jill Stein—are qualified. Although it's too late to remove West and De la Cruz from the ballot, polling places will post notices that votes for them won't count. This decision reversed an earlier order by Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. We'll have final thoughts after this. Independent filmmaker Zach Clark joins to discuss the work of punk auteur legend Jon Moritsugu and his 1994 cult favorite Mod Fuck Explosion. A riff on classic Hollywood tales like West Side Story, the film is brash, outrageous, occasionally reprehensible, and is (in Zach's words) less about teen angst so much as it simply *is* teen angst manifested onscreen. We first discuss the singular style of Moritsugu as filmmaker, his movies' no-budget charms, and how their hyper-stylized aesthetic, formalism, and performances turn the film's budgetary limitations into distinctive attributes that call attention to the their own artifice. Then, we discuss Mod Fuck Explosion's brilliance as a totem of 90s teen ennui and an interrogation of Moritsugu's career-long targets such as the prison of domesticity, anti-Asian racism, and gender roles. Finally, we discuss why the film's of Moritsugu transcend basic descriptiors like satire and camp, embracing genuine sincerity and uncovering deep emotional truths with a commendable level of vulnerabiltiy. On the back half of the show, we spend some time discussing Zach's new film The Becomers, a 21st century take on science fiction B-movies about body snatching aliens finding love in the time of COVID. The Becomers is out on VOD today! As Pearl Jam is preparing for another memorable weekend at Wrigley Field this week, we were put in a somewhat difficult spot as to what we should cover to get you guys excited for the show. The dilemma was that we had already covered all five Wrigley shows back in the summer of 2020, so what would we do? Well, there's a little show that took place in Chicago in 2005 that doesn't get discussed as much as it should. To raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief funds, Robert Plant and Pearl Jam combined forces to create an out of this world all-star show. Our friend Jason Brown was lucky enough to be there that night, and he'll join us to tell the stories of how it all went down. To get into this show that took place in an intimate venue that has a capacity of less than 2,000, you had to make a $1,000 donation in order to get in. Jason made that donation, but you'll want to hear the wild story of how it happened. As legendary Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant and his band The Strange Sensation opened up the night, the place was abuzz of whether the two rock 'n' roll titans would combine forces. Lo and behold, they did! The set they played with Plant was pretty remarkable, a combination of Given To Fly and Going To California as a wink wink to the song's influence kicked things off, followed by a few standard 1960s songs such as Little Sister and Money (That's What I Want). And then the band truly breaks out the Zeppelin heavy hitters - Fool In The Rain and Thank You. We'll have a very interesting discussion on Fool In The Rain featuring facts that may surprise you. The Gear Guru also joins us for this show and while we spend some time talking Zeppelin with him, we'll dig into Save You, Porch and Rearviewmirror that may or may not have sounded like other Pearl Jam songs. Grab the tissues for this one. I sit down with Azure, the creator of sober.chronicles. Azure is a mom, a wife, a hospice nurse and a sobriety advocate. Azure recently hit 18 months of sobriety. Yay! Her main inspiration that led her to examining her own relationship with alcohol, came after losing her little sister, Karenza, at only 29 years due to complications of liver failure. "The kindest, funniest, clumsiest soul I have ever known suffered so silently that nobody, and I mean NOBODY knew. You would have never guessed when she walked into a room with her infectious smile and laugh. She suffered from anxiety and insomnia and tried everything in her power to just try to sleep. Using prescription and over the counter sleep aids, in addition to wine, she tried desperately to calm her mind and rest. But her liver couldn't handle it. She woke up one morning in full-fledged liver failure and battled it for 5 months before she died. This entire account, all of the effort I put into making sure this doesn't keep happening to people, is to honor my sister. I will continue to educate about the harms of alcohol. I will continue to advocate for sobriety. I will continue to use scare tactics if I have to. Because this shit is REAL. And alcohol should scare you.ESPECIALLY if it's used in conjunction with any type of anxiety medication and/or Tylenol PM. I recover out loud so nobody like Karenza has to die in silence. If you are struggling, PLEASE reach out. You are not alone. You don't have to do this alone. You are loved." Join the SobahSistahs Sobriety Club today with this 30-Day FREE Trial

Alex knows he can't protect her because all he can think about is breaking her in every way possible. But how can he? When she's the little sister of his best friend. The forbidden fruit.
