This week on Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, the truck rolls into Georgia, and for Brian this stop is personal, because Georgia is home. Born and raised in the north Georgia mountains, Brian opens up about the afternoon when he was twelve years old that set the course of his entire life, when something heavy and bipedal paced him through a thicket of pine, charged out of the brush, and sent him running six hundred yards home so terrified he was sick in his own front yard. From there he hands the mic to Mr. Brown, a Summerville carpenter and part-time ginseng hunter who, in August of 1986, came face to face with an eight-foot creature near a fire tower at Jenkins Gap. It had a withered left arm, fingernails grown so long they'd knotted, and a limp like a drunk old man, and Mr. Brown reported it to the sheriff, the newspaper, and Atlanta TV stations because he was afraid it might cross paths with a child.Brian then opens the wider file on Georgia, a state most people overlook for Bigfoot but which ranks among the most active in the country, with well over a hundred credible reports on record. He walks through the 1829 Okefenokee Swamp attack, one of the earliest written Sasquatch accounts in American history, complete with eighteen-inch tracks, a thirteen-foot creature, and a deadly battle reported in the Milledgeville Statesman. He covers the much-argued 2009 Lumpkin County sheriff's dash cam footage, the 2000 Rood Creek camping scare on the Chattahoochee, the broad-daylight 2024 Fort Valley sighting near Macon, the Expedition Bigfoot museum up in Cherry Log, and the old Cherokee Tsul'kalu legend his father's friend Elijah used to tell around the fire. Then the road drops south, out of the mountains and across the fall line into the black-water country of the coast, to the town of Darien and the Altamaha River. Settled by Scottish Highlanders from the shores of Loch Ness itself, Darien has spent nearly two centuries telling stories about a thirty-foot river monster the locals call the Altamaha-ha, or Altie for short.Brian traces the legend from its Muscogee Creek and Tama roots through the colonial timber rafts, then lays out the documented sightings, including Captain Delano's seventy-foot serpent off St. Simons Island in 1830, the timbermen and hunters of the early twentieth century, the 1969 brothers, the 1970s reports from Harvey Blackman and Frank Culpepper, the Butler Island sightings, the 1981 Larry Gwin and Steven Wilson encounter that put Altie on the national map, the 2010 video off Fort King George, and the strange remains that washed up at Wolf Island in 2018. He closes the river out with the encounters that never make the papers but never stop circulating, the fishermen watching humps roll through the channel, the boaters tracking something long swimming against the current, the night sounds that send grandmothers to latch the windows on the hottest nights, the shrimper whose new net got torn open by something he still calls a bull shark, the duck hunter whose old Lab climbed into his lap, and the dockside witnesses who watched a long head rise, look at them, and sink straight down into the dark. Brian weighs the sturgeon, manatee, and right whale explanations honestly, and lands where he always does, in the not-knowing, which he'll tell you is the most alive he ever feels.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? We want to hear your story.Email your encounter to brian@paranormalworldproductions.com for a chance to be featured on a future episode of Backwoods Bigfoot Stories.Backwoods Bigfoot Stories is a paranormal storytelling podcast featuring real Bigfoot encounters, Sasquatch sightings, Dogman reports, cryptid experiences, and true scary stories from the backwoods.Follow the show and turn on automatic downloads so you never miss a chilling encounter from the forest. What happens when a physician faces a devastating obstetrical outcome, crushing malpractice premiums, and the realization that the career path they've chosen is no longer sustainable? In this deeply personal and insightful episode of Rx for Success, host Dr. Randy Cook sits down with Dr. George Nowacek—an OBGYN practicing in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and the newest addition to the MD Coaches team. Dr. Nowacek shares his remarkable journey from growing up in Virginia, to an old-school residency (pre-duty hour restrictions), to private practice in Macon, Georgia, and eventually to a fulfilling academic career at UNC. He opens up about the difficult decision to stop practicing obstetrics after a traumatic outcome, the financial pressures that influenced that choice, and the unexpected joy of pivoting to a GYN-only practice and later to academic medicine. Along the way, he offers profound wisdom on defining success on your own terms, cultivating relationships across a lifetime, and prioritizing the activities that charge your battery. Key Topics Discussed: Growing up with parents in education and discovering medicine as an "assumption" rather than a dramatic calling. The challenge of choosing a specialty with limited information in medical school. Why OBGYN appealed to his personality: every day is different (medicine, primary care, procedures, surgery). The reality of residency in the pre-duty hour era: survival mode, doubt, and learning on the fly. Reflections on duty hour restrictions and the evolution of medical training. The transition from residency to private practice: the "quantum jump" from trainee to the person in charge. The emotional and practical impact of a bad obstetrical outcome. How malpractice premiums (pre-caps) made obstetrics financially unsustainable. The decision to leave obstetrics and pivot to a GYN-only private practice. Being recruited into academic medicine at UNC Chapel Hill. The rewards of teaching: watching trainees grow from interns to chiefs. Discovering coaching through a grand rounds presentation and pursuing training. The importance of peer support for physicians who have experienced bad outcomes. Dr. Nowacek's three prescriptions for success: define success for yourself, cultivate relationships, and find what charges your battery. Hi Keisha, it's me. You should call for a state takeover of MARTA & champion rail for GA

The Ron Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2026 44:23

My conversation today was heard by hundreds or thousands on Georgia NOW & Progressive Voices, but truly, it was meant for an audience of one - former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who's now the Democratic Party nominee for Governor of Georgia.MARTA's a PR disaster. A ghoulish, murderous stabbing of a grandmother. New trains (again) delayed prior to the FIFA World Cup. "More MARTA" underwhelming the voters that supported it.The Atlanta Beltline is falling further and further from its intention to alleviate in-city gridlock and offer easier mobility from Atlanta's historic neighborhoods as resistance to the rail element continues to build clout. Why not take a page from the Georgia GOP, circa 2020-21, and call for a state takeover of MARTA the way they salivated over wresting the airport from the city? As Atlanta's former mayor, you have your fingerprints on the Beltline project and can't possibly agree with Cox Enterprises CEO Alex Taylor who's joined the NIMBYs and Eastside trail business folks who now don't want the crucial rail element at all anymore, now, can you? Transit ... mobility ... not just for Atlanta in-city, but the metropolitan area and - dare I say - the state (that's home to the world's busiest airport and has feeder airports inexplicably flying people in small numbers at exorbitant fares) should be a top-of-mind conversation for an aspirational gubernatorial candidate. Heck, talk Delta into a public-private partnership. There's precedence for this in Canada. It makes good business sense for Delta, because it clearly did so for Air Canada, too. While the two GOP candidates try to out "tax cut" one another while also slinging mud to and fro, wouldn't be refreshing for the Democratic gubernatorial candidate to counter with something vastly more impactful?I mean a $1000 break here or there is fine, I guess. Not life changing. Reducing commute times, an affordable, swift means to connect to the world's busiest airport from Athens, Augusta, Columbus, Macon & Savannah - all of which makes it viable for people to live just about wherever they want in the state where they can find more affordable housing; that's what would positively impact the lives of so many Georgians.Mrs. Bottoms, you should pronounce to voters that you'll be governor who connects the state. Be the "mobility governor."It's there waiting for someone to grasp. Grasp it.

In this episode of Macon It, we sit down with Bill Causey, a longtime public servant and one of the driving forces behind many of Macon's most beloved green spaces and trails. Even in retirement from Macon-Bibb County, Bill is still hard at work advocating for projects that connect people to nature, and to each other. From helping pave roads and shape Macon's water drainage systems early in his career to spearheading the growth of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail, Bill has spent decades helping shape the way our community moves, gathers, and grows. We talk about the vision behind Macon's trail system, the importance of public greenspace, and why creating pathways through the community is about much more than recreation, it's about connection.

Handpicked as the inaugural inductee into the We Sound Crazy Producer Hall of Fame and honored with the prestigious Esther Rolle Black Excellence Award (The Erbie), Campbell sits down with Philonaire, Claude, Chuck, and Tamon Backon from Macon for a deeply reflective Masterclass on a brilliant career that spans gospel, hip-hop, and R&B. From his early childhood days at King's Chapel Apostolic Church in East LA—where icons like El DeBarge and Andraé Crouch routinely dropped in—to cutting his teeth as a teenage multi-instrumentalist session player in the legendary studios of Death Row Records, Campbell shares an unfiltered, backstage pass look at his musical evolution. In this captivating episode, Campbell opens up about the pivotal figures who shaped his career, including the creative mentorship of DJ Quik and the executive guidance of Sony Music's Jon Platt, who signed him to his very first publishing deal at age 19. Warryn recounts his deep, familial bond with Brandy, navigating his fierce professional rivalry with Rodney Jerkins, and his long-standing, brilliant creative connection with one-of-one songwriter Harold Lilly. He also lifts the curtain on the inception of the iconic gospel duo Mary Mary, revealing how a moment in the shower listening to a bassline through the wall of his parents' garage transformed into the global blockbuster phenomenon "Shackles (Praise You)" which sparked a bidding war with Diddy and Columbia Records. Beyond the hits and historical sessions with titans like Tupac, Kanye West, Luther Vandross, and Kelly Price, Warryn candidly explores the delicate realities of balancing life as a hitmaker, husband, father, and pastor. Reflecting on his enduring legacy, Campbell defines his ultimate approach to music as an authentic vessel of divine download, proudly breaking genre barriers by engineering hits across multiple musical spectrums without ever losing his creative salvation. “The Freedom Fighter is in my blood,” Jenell Mansfield says, tracing her roots from Macon, Georgia, to Dexter-Davidson, the Jeffries Projects, Central High School, and Haiti's revolutionary legacy. In this Detroit is Different conversation, Mansfield, a teacher and social worker running for Wayne County Commissioner in the 5th District, opens up about the generations that shaped her politics, purpose, and love for Black people. Her family story begins with Great Migration dreams, a veteran great-grandfather seeking something better, grandparents who came of age in Motown-era Detroit, and a Haitian father whose history taught her that freedom is never given. Mansfield connects personal memory to public policy, breaking down how housing, poverty, education, water shutoffs, and “hyper ghetto” conditions impact what Detroiters can imagine for their futures. She reminds us, “You can't be what you can't see,” while challenging listeners to think about what happens when Black communities are separated from resources, elders, and examples of possibility. This interview matters because it ties Detroit's past to the political choices ahead, showing how lived experience, social work, teaching, and community love can become a blueprint for leadership rooted in the people. Welcome to Travel to Listen, a new Unpacked series hosted by veteran music journalist Tim Chester. Over four episodes rolling out every other week, Tim takes us into the cities where music is more than entertainment—it's the shortcut to a place's soul. This week, he goes to the source in Macon: meet the people keeping the city's legendary songbook alive, and find out why a trip here might be the most soulful detour you've never considered. In this episode How the Macon Music Revue transforms songs by Little Richard, the Allman Brothers, and R.E.M. into something new—without losing what made them legendary Why Charles Davis believes there's “something in the water” in Macon—and how the city's Indigenous roots may be part of its musical soul The story behind the new Otis Redding Center for the Arts: from a 1965 music camp at Otis's ranch to a full museum and education hub that opened in March 2025 What visitors to Macon often don't know about Otis Redding—the savvy businessman, devoted family man, and farmer who owned cows, chickens, and horses Where to eat, drink, and hear live music in Macon: from Capricorn Sound Studios to H&H Soul Food, where the Allman Brothers ate when they were broke Meet this week's guests Charles Davis is the frontman of the Macon Music Revue, a band that reinterprets the city's iconic catalog with a soul-forward sound all their own. A longtime Macon radio voice, Charles is one of the city's most active stewards of its musical legacy. Justin Andrews is the director of special projects and outreach at the Otis Redding Foundation, and the grandson of soul legend Otis Redding. He helped bring the Otis Redding Center for the Arts to life when it opened in March 2025. Guest host Tim Chester is a freelance travel and culture writer who has spent the past 20 years exploring the world through the lens of music. His reporting has appeared in NME, Spin, and Afar, and his travels have taken him from Manhattan to Malawi and Beijing to Berlin in search of the festivals, scenes, and stories that reveal a city's soul. Here's how to do it like a fan. Start here: the essential stops Capricorn Sound Studios & Museum—the birthplace of Southern rock. The Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House—the Tudor-style house where Duane, Gregg, Berry Oakley, and their families lived from 1970 to 1973. The Otis Redding Museum—View plane tickets, telegrams, the briefcase from the wreckage, and pictures pulled from Zelma Redding's personal archive. The Otis Redding Center for the Arts (ORCA)—The newest piece of the puzzle, opened March 2025: a youth music education hub, the O3 Recording Studio, and the outdoor Zelma Redding Amphitheater, where a bronze statue of Otis now welcomes visitors. Hear live music Grant's Lounge—the historic dive that served as an audition spot for Capricorn Records. The Douglas Theatre—built in 1921 as a venue for African American performers during segregation, and where a teenage Otis Redding won the teen talent competition so many times the organizers asked him to stop entering. Hargray Capitol Theatre—a beautifully restored downtown venue that brings in touring acts across genres. Eat and drink like a local H&H Soul Food—the legendary downtown spot started by Mama Louise and Mama Inez, who fed the Allman Brothers when they were broke. The Rookery—Get the burger, stay for the music, and listen for the Otis Redding song that always seems to be playing when you walk in. Go a little deeper Rock Candy Tours—weekly guided walking tours that connect the dots between the studios, homes, and venues. The Macon Music Trail—a self-guided trail of 43+ music sites with a free companion mobile app, including the Little Richard House and Rose Hill Cemetery, where Duane Allman and Berry Oakley are buried. The Macon Music Revue (Terminus Records, 2024)—listen to Charles's reinterpretations of “Losing My Religion,” “Stand Back,” and more. themaconmusicrevue.com Up next on Travel to Listen Tim heads to Minneapolis to get bright and bouncy with the city's funk scene—and to hear how the city is planning to mark the 10th anniversary of Prince's untimely passing. PLUS: Thurmond's endorsement gets: plums or prunes? Also, Keisha's list was ... something to see & Esteves' list is long.- -- Coming off a third - and impressive - 'No Kings Day' weekend, it was in listening to (marveling at) Rev. Senator Raphael Warnock deliver a "no notes" speech in Atlanta Saturday that somehow aligned well against the faux religiosity on display at CPAC on the same weekend. The emergence of James Talarico in Texas has Christian nationalism freaking out like "The Wizard" once the curtain was pulled back. Which brings me to my guest today: April Ajoy, author (Star-Spangled Jesus: Leaving Christian Nationalism and Finding a True Faith), content creator, influencer, and ex-Christian nationalist, joined me to share her exodus from right wing evangelism, which began about the time Trump descended down the golden escalator. - - - IN the second half of the show (44:35) Mike Thurmond's two "gets" - former governor Roy Barnes & former Atlanta mayor & UN ambassador Andrew Young - got a lot of media & social media coverage over the weekend, but are they significant? Also, who on Keisha Lance Bottoms' campaign staff let public her endorsement page in a completely unfinished template form? Jason Esteves, meanwhile, has a substantial list of Democratic state legislators. Of course, Geoff Duncan got press for picking up prominent Black male nods, too. - - - A WSB-TV story focusing on the north Atlanta v south Atlanta economic divide isn't just an "Atlanta story;" it's playing out in cities of any substantial size just about everywhere in the U.S. Thought I'd chew on it a bit.- - - A 'No Kings Day' walk-off in Macon concerns me. Sure, a local sheriff was allowed to speak and his department works in coordination with ICE, but A) that's mandated by state law and B) he came to NKD/Macon looking to engage, so shouldn't we? - - - It seems pretty clear MAGA has lost Joe Rogan. Joe zeroed in on the war / Wall Street grift. - - - Back under the Gold Dome, the 'zombie bill' Senator Greg Dolezal crafted to put onerous burdens on local elections officials and pursue hand-marked paper ballots by fall passed the Senate and now sits in the House. What'll happen to it, there, I wonder?

Originally released on 8/21/24 as Episode 503In this episode, we delve into the extraordinary experiences of Tim Dills from Western North Carolina, a lifelong outdoorsman whose encounters span more than fifteen years across the rugged mountains of Macon County. Hunting deep within the vast forests surrounding Standing Indian, Rainbow Springs, and the North Carolina–Georgia border, Tim began noticing subtle signs that something was sharing the ridgelines with him. What started as unusual sounds and disturbances on a remote, gated property soon unfolded into repeated interactions—powerful vocalizations echoing through the hollows, rocks landing with precision, trees manipulated along active trails, and moments of unmistakable presence just beyond sight. Over time, those experiences led to multiple visual encounters, including a towering figure observed at close range and tracks measuring far beyond anything human.Tim describes intelligent behavior, coordinated movements in the forest, and a landscape that feels alive with awareness. He shares how years of returning to the same remote mountain terrain shaped his understanding of these beings and strengthened his conviction that they are deeply rooted in the Appalachian wilderness.Grounded, detailed, and reflective, Tim's account offers a rare look into sustained activity in one North Carolina county. Join us as we explore his journey through the forests of Western North Carolina and the enduring mystery that continues to unfold there.

Brian welcomes Tim from Macon County, North Carolina, whose interest in Bigfoot began in an unexpected way. Years ago, he and a friend decided to prank the friend's sons by creating fake tracks in the woods, a harmless hoax meant to stir up a little excitement. But not long after, the joke seemed to take on a life of its own.Beginning in 2008, Tim says unexplained activity started occurring on the property—events that made him question whether something real might be moving through those woods. What followed were a series of strange and unsettling incidents. Tim recalls a raccoon being violently killed while a deep roar and whistling sounds echoed through the area. He also describes rocks and sticks being thrown, piercing screams from the darkness, and repeated disturbances around the trails, deer stands, and feeders scattered throughout the property. Over time, these experiences escalated from mysterious noises to what Tim believes were direct encounters. One involved a creature he photographed alongside researcher Dwight Campbell. Another encounter occurred while Tim was bow hunting, when he says a large figure appeared within roughly twenty feet of him. In a separate experience in Cades Cove, he observed something during the daytime using thermal equipment. More recently, in 2022, Tim describes seeing a creature on the ground that crawled away from the area rather than standing upright. Tim also recounts a trip following the South Carolina Bigfoot Festival, when his group returned to a location where bluff-charge vocalizations had previously been reported. The area had already generated stories from other witnesses, including reports of glowing eyes and even claims of a dogman-like creature moving through the woods.Despite skepticism from some people in his life, Tim remains focused on documenting what he believes is genuine activity. One of the moments that left the strongest impression on him involved hearing what sounded like two creatures communicating back and forth, an experience that reinforced his belief that these beings possess intelligence and complex behavior.Today, Tim continues researching and sharing his experiences while encouraging others to approach the subject with curiosity and an open mind. He also promotes his work with Sasquatch Recon, North Carolina Investigates, and his online channels, where he documents ongoing field efforts and discussions surrounding the mystery.Sasquatch Recon YouTube ChannelEmail BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? May Pang on John Lennon and "The Lost Weekend", A Love Story E121

We sit down with May Pang to unpack John Lennon's misnamed “Lost Weekend” and reveal a season of creative fire, repaired friendships, and family reconnection. May shares what really happened across those 18 months: the studio grind behind Mind Games, Walls and Bridges, and Rock 'n' Roll; and the bet that led to a thunderous Thanksgiving return with Elton John.We walk through May's unexpected path from Abkco assistant to John and Yoko's personal assistant to John's trusted partner. She opens the door to an East River apartment where Paul and Linda knock unannounced and Julian finds a steady line to his dad. May explains how weekly calls, shared holidays, and respectful honesty gave John room to repair family ties long strained by distance and noise. There's myth‑busting, too: where the money came from, who actually held the checkbook, how the LA antics got amplified, and why the “Lost Weekend” nickname came from John's own movie‑minded metaphor rather than a spiral. We even pause on a close, silent UFO over Manhattan—witnessed by both May and John—because history is sometimes stranger than rumor. If you care about Beatles history, rock history, or simply how creativity survives under pressure, this conversation reframes a legend with first‑hand detail and generous nuance. Hit play, then share this with a friend who still thinks “Lost Weekend” means lost time. And if the story moved you, follow the show, leave a quick review, and tell us: what part of Lennon's 70s era do you see differently now?Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease like and follow the Music in My Shoes Facebook and Instagram pagesReach out to us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.comEXHIBITION DATESFriday, February 27 – Sunday, March 1Macon, GA“The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang” featuring May Pang appearanceGallery West, 447 3rd Street, Macon, GAHours: Friday 12p – 7p (opening reception 5p – 7p), Saturday 11a – 5p & Sunday, 12p – 4pFriday, March 13 – Sunday, March 15Jacksonville, FLGallery 725, 13475 Atlantic Blvd, Jacksonville, FL“The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang” featuring May Pang appearanceHours: Friday 5p – 8p, Saturday 1p – 6p and Sunday 12p – 4pFriday, March 20 – Sunday, March 22, 2026Winter Garden, FL (Orlando, FL)The Grotto at Stoneybrook West, 12572 Stoneybrook West Pkwy, Winter Garden, FL“The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang” featuring May Pang appearanceHours: Friday 4p – 7p, Saturday 12p – 6p & Sunday, 12p – 4pSaturday, March 28 – Saturday, April 4“Flower Power Cruise featuring the Beach Boys, Rascals, Micky Dolenz, Tommy James, Cowsills & more!Fort Lauderdale, FLFriday, April 17 – Sunday, April 19, 2026Roanoke, VAWilson Hughes Gallery, 117 Campbell Ave SW, Roanoke, VA“The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang” featuring May Pang appearanceHours: Friday 4p – 7p, Saturday 12p – 6p & Sunday, 12p – 4pTuesday, April 21 & Wednesday, April 22Richmond, VAanne's Visual Art Studio gallery, 208 W. His name isn't likely one you've heard before, but his story should feel eerily familiar. Matthew Emmanuel Macon is well-known as Lansing, Michigan's first (and only) serial killer, a young Black man who targeted elderly women living alone in the Capital City- quite a deviation from the standard serial killer trope. But two decades before Macon, there was Michael Darnell Harris- a young Black man who targeted elderly women living alone in the Capital City. They say history repeats itself, and when it comes to Lansing's serial killers, that's definitely, oddly, true.Case: Michael Darnell HarrisAudio production by Bill Bertschinger.
