Welcome to The Turf Zone podcast. This episode spotlights the Alabama Turfgrass Association incoming president Lee Fillingim – Golf Course Superintendent at Cherokee Pines Golf Course in Centre, Alabama. With 30 years in the golf course and turfgrass industry and 11 years as a member of the Alabama Turfgrass Association, Lee Fillingim has built a career defined by dedication, leadership, relationships, and a genuine passion for the people who make up the turfgrass industry. Lee earned his B.S. in Operations Management from Auburn University and began his golf course management career at The Fields Golf Course in LaGrange, Georgia. He later returned to Auburn to earn a second degree in Agronomy and Soils before moving to Macon, Georgia, where he began his career as a Golf Course Superintendent. Lee and his wife, Lagina, originally planned to spend only a year and a half in Macon. Instead, the community became home for the next 18 years. From there, the family relocated to Anniston, Alabama, where Lee served as Golf Course Superintendent at Anniston Country Club for 11 years. Today, he leads the turfgrass operation at Cherokee Pines Golf Course in Centre. Throughout his career, Lee has embraced opportunities to serve and give back to the industry. His leadership experience includes serving on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association, serving as President of the Alabama Golf Course Superintendents Association, and now preparing to serve as incoming President of the Alabama Turfgrass Association. The Influence of Mentors When Lee reflects on his three decades in the industry, one of the things he values most is the many people who have influenced his career. “Mentors come in many forms,” Lee says. “Whether coworkers, sales representatives, fellow superintendents, sod farm owners, landscapers, or educators, each has played a role in shaping us in the everyday moments of our work.” While he is grateful for the lessons learned from countless people along the way, one mentor has had a particularly lasting influence: Wade Thomas, Superintendent at Idle Hour Country Club in Macon, Georgia. “Wade has been and continues to this day to be my most influential mentor,” Lee says. More Than an Association For Lee, the Alabama Turfgrass Association represents something much bigger than an industry organization. “What stands out most about the ATA—and about this industry as a whole—is that it's never been driven by money,” he says. “Of course, we all work to support our families, but the way we treat one another goes far beyond business. We operate like family.” Lee believes that spirit is what makes the ATA special. Its committees, programs, and initiatives are built around education, guidance, and a genuine commitment to helping others. “Our goal is to help every member succeed, no matter the situation or opportunity,” he says. As he prepares to take on the role of ATA President, that commitment to education, service, and fellowship will be at the heart of his leadership. Looking Toward the Future Like many who have spent decades in the turfgrass industry, Lee has witnessed tremendous changes in technology and equipment. He believes the next major transformation may be the biggest yet. “Autonomous technology and AI will no doubt be the biggest game changer in the industry,” Lee says. “It is amazing to see how, in theory, one can operate an operation from a smartphone and game controller just sitting at a desk. Just drop off a mower and hit start from your iPhone. It reminds me of George Jetson!” While technology will continue to change the way turf is managed, Lee believes the relationships within the industry will remain just as important as ever. Family First Behind Lee’s career and many years of service are his wife, Lagina, their four children, and two grandchildren—all of whom have played an instrumental and supportive role throughout his professional journey. When he's away from work, Lee enjoys spending time with his family and, of course, playing golf. His favorite rounds? The ones where he manages to break 100. With three decades of experience behind him and a new chapter of leadership ahead, Lee Fillingim brings to the Alabama Turfgrass Association not only extensive industry knowledge, but also a deep appreciation for the people, relationships, and shared commitment that make this industry special. As he steps into the role of ATA President, members can look forward to leadership grounded in experience, service, and—most importantly—the belief that we are better when we work together. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and me Muslims killed 20 Christians in Congo Islamic militants killed over 20 people in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo last month. The Muslims killed a church elder and a worship leader in the village of Mangina. A local pastor told Open Doors, “Fear is increasing. Brothers and sisters, please intercede for the safety of the rural commune of Mangina and for the strengthening of the faith of Christians.” Such attacks are common in the country as Islamic extremists try to eradicate the presence of Christians.  According to Open Doors, Congo, Africa is the 29th worst country worldwide for the persecution of Christians. 70,000 Muslim migrants stormed Ceuta, Spain Over 70,000 migrants stormed the Spanish North African enclave city of Ceuta. Most were young men from the Muslim-majority country of Morocco.  The Spanish city of Ceuta borders Morocco and is home to just over 80,000 people. Spain deployed its military in response to the surge of migrants, sending most of them back as of yesterday.  Dozens reportedly died in the crossing. A local pastor told Evangelical Focus, “Pray for our city, for the authorities, and for all the staff working on the front line. … We hope that the Lord will allow us to be a beacon of hope and support for our city.” In Matthew 5:16, Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.” Todd Blanche nomination for Attorney General heads to Senate floor On August 3rd, the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced the nomination of Todd Blanche as U.S. Attorney General after he struck a deal with two GOP holdouts, reports The Epoch Times. Republican Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas had opposed Blanche because of concerns over a settlement that the Department of Justice negotiated with President Donald Trump in his suit against the IRS. On August 2, Blanche said that he formally terminated a nearly $1.8 billion fund that would have given payments to victims of government weaponization. Tillis and Cornyn subsequently issued a statement on August 3 pledging their support. The Senate Committee voted 12–10, along party lines, to advance Blanche's nomination. It now heads to the Senate floor for a final confirmation vote, where he can afford to lose only two Republican votes, assuming all Democrats will be opposed and GOP Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky will be absent due to illness. Contact your two U.S. Senators by email and phone -- whatever their party affiliation might be -- and urge them to vote for Todd Blanche as U.S. Attorney General.  Do not assume that every Republican Senator will vote for him. And do not assume that every Democrat Senator will vote against him. Just speak your mind and leave the results ion God's hands. Georgia must reinstate Christian education program In the United States, a district court ruled that a Georgia school district must reinstate a Christian education program. Sweet Onion Christian Learning Center provided free, off-campus religious instruction for students at Vidalia High School. However, school officials canceled the program after its leader criticized a proposed tax increase on his Facebook page.  With the help of Alliance Defending Freedom, the learning center challenged this in court and won.  Planned Parenthood has closed 57 abortion mills since 2025 Planned Parenthood is closing three of its facilities in Michigan. The abortion giant is facing $5.6 million in losses in the state.   The One Big Beautiful Bill Act temporarily defunded Planned Parenthood last year. The funding pause expired last month. However, it did cause many locations to shut down.    The American Life League reports that Planned Parenthood has closed 57 locations since January 2025. U.S. economic growth slowed in second quarter U.S. economic growth slowed during the second quarter of this year. The Gross Domestic Product increased at an annual rate of 1.5 percent. That's down from 2.1 percent during the first quarter. The slower growth was due in part to a decrease in government spending.  In-N-Out Burger President urges those in Idaho to turn to God The owner of In-N-Out Burger spoke out after a tragic shooting at one of the company's locations.  The shooting happened at a newly opened In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho on Saturday. Three people died, including an In-N-Out associate.  Lynsi Snyder is the owner and president of In-N-Out Burger. She wrote, “In-N-Out will be mourning with the families and praying for them as they tread through a very painful season. I am no stranger to loss, but this is so incredibly tough, and my heart also goes out to all of the Associates and Customers who were there during this traumatic event. I was blown away by what he wrote.  I started reading it to my children and, you guessed it, I started crying.  I asked Mercy, my 14-year-old daughter, to finish reading it since I got choked up. He wrote, “I just listened to your Worldview in 5 Minutes and was moved to get you guys across the finish line.  I sent the remaining $950 that you guys needed. “I just want to let you know that you have encouraged me. “Adam, I pray two things for you.  First, I pray that you are encouraged by the gifts that shower your ministry. And second, I pray that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ continues to use you and your program to share not only the news, but the grace of God.” 13 Worldview listeners gave $2,500 And finally, as we wrapped up our annual fundraiser in our second spillover day, 13 Worldview listeners stepped up to the plate by 10:30pm Central to invest their treasure to help fully fund the 6-member Worldview newscast team. After discovering psychedelics and Chicago blues in the late 1960s, Kirk became an IV meth user and drug dealer. He fled pending charges, landed in the psychedelic communities of Boulder and Northern California, and was eventually identified and arrested while hitchhiking through Nevada with meth and syringes in his backpack. Kirk recounts therapeutic-community rehab, heroin addiction, the murder of his drug-dealing partner, repeated arrests and the camera-store burglary that finally led him back into treatment. He found recovery through one of Florida's earliest Narcotics Anonymous communities—but after five years sober, he attempted to prove that he could drink normally. That experiment ended shortly after John Lennon's murder and ultimately gave Kirk the sobriety date he has maintained ever since. His recovery opened the door to an extraordinary career photographing Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Clash, Jerry Garcia and countless others. Kirk eventually became the Allman Brothers Band's archivist and tour manager, served as Dickey Betts' sponsor and helped preserve the group's history. He shares intimate stories about Gregg Allman, Duane Allman, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, the Big House in Macon—and the night Lowell George offered him cocaine shortly before his death. Populist Threats and the "Share Our Wealth" Movement Guest: David Pietrusza Book Title: Roosevelt Sweeps Nation: FDR's 1936 Landslide and the Triumph of the Liberal Ideal As Roosevelt prepared for the 1936 election, he faced significant pressure from the populist left, most notably embodied by Huey Long of Louisiana. Long's "Share Our Wealth" program proposed seizing assets from millionaires to provide every American family with a guaranteed income, car, and radio. Though Long was assassinated in September 1935, his legacy and the millions of members in his clubs remained a potent threat to Roosevelt's base. Long's strategy had been to siphon enough votes to elect a Republican in 1936, hoping the ensuing failure would lead the nation to turn to him as the "man on the white horse" in 1940. In the South, Eugene "Old Gene" Talmadge of Georgia represented a different brand of populism, blending race-baiting with Jeffersonian conservatism. Talmadge refused to fund New Deal welfare programs despite local need, accusing the administration of communist influence. In January 1936, he hosted a rally in Macon, Georgia, where supporters displayed Confederate flags and engaged in aggressive red-baiting. These challengers highlighted the fragile nature of Roosevelt's 1932 coalition, which relied on the "solid South" despite its crushing Jim Crow laws. The President had to neutralize these "crackpot ideas" while addressing the genuine suffering of the Great Depression. This internal party friction necessitated a strategy that could bridge the gap between radical populists and the traditional Democratic machine, all while the nation looked toward the growing needs of the elderly and the unemployed.
