In 2018, Eleanor Wachtel went to New York City to interview one of North America's most renowned and daring creative pioneers, Laurie Anderson. The multimedia artist and musician had just published her retrospective book, All the Things I Lost in the Flood, inspired by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, which destroyed Anderson's archive of work and memorabilia. In this career-spanning and deeply personal conversation, she talks about the connection between story and memory, growing up in the Midwest with seven brothers and sisters, her relationship with Lou Reed, her partner of 21 years, and becoming unlikely pen pals with John F. Kennedy.

4 Things I Lost, 8 Things I Gained, and How YOU Can Benefit From My Hack

As many of you know, I lost my Facebook and Instagram accounts two months ago, in July 2020. They have not been recovered. You can hear all about that hack in this episode: The ISIS Flag Hack. Shortly after that episode, I started to question the words that I was using to describe the hack: "I lost everything. I had to start over." Considering the community that rallied around me, I certainly had not "lost everything"! I wanted to really question what the numbers on Instagram truly give us. So, I committed to journaling my return to Instagram with a fresh, new account. I told everyone that I would journal in an attempt to answer 2 questions: "What did I lose?" and "What did I GAIN from this hack?" Today, I'm answering that question to the very, very best of my ability. It took me a while to figure out how I wanted to present this episode. At first, I couldn't figure out how I wanted to present everything I've felt, learned, researched, and concluded since the hack. I knew that my hope was that you could benefit from my hack. I wanted to give you as much value as possible from my loss. I knew there was too much to include in one episode and I knew that many of the things I wanted to share were personal. This episode was going to be personal in the sense that I was going to speak with vulnerability & transparency. But the lessons I was going to share were also personal in the sense that I learned couldn't apply to everyone listening. You were never going to apply the lessons I learned the way I applied them because there are thousands, maybe millions, of factors contributing to each of our situations at any given time. My solution shouldn't be your solution. And finally, I knew that for you to realize some of the benefits I've realized from this hack, you would also have to simply sit with some of the same questions I sat with for a few days, weeks, or months. So here's what I decided. I decided to do what I always do in my podcast episodes - to tell a story. This is the story of how I came to peace with the hack, how I drew my conclusions, and what I've lost and what I've gained through this hack. Listen Now More Resources This may be enough value for many of you. However, some of you may want to dig deeper and consider the applications for yourselves. So, along with this episode, I'm offering 2 resources. The first is a checklist - a 4 page, 14 step plan to defend YOUR accounts and YOUR business from a hack. If I had followed all the things on this checklist (which I've broken down into 4 sections - Do today, do this week, do in the next month, prioritize and plan), there's a good chance I would not have been hacked (and yes, I WAS using 2-factor authentication, that's not all there is to protect yourself.) And if I had been hacked, I think I could have rebuilt more quickly if I had followed this checklist before the hack. Click here to view "A 14 Step Plan to Defend Your Business From Facebook and Instagram Hacks."   The second resource I'm offering is a guided journal to help you gain, as I have, a crystal clear approach to including Instagram in your plans and goals. There is FAR more I'm going to be saying about this in other streams, but please just know - YOU get to decide how and if Instagram fits into your life and ambitions. I've put together 18 writing prompts to help you create a plan and set boundaries or permissions that will make Instagram an effective and joyful place for you. I've titled it “Define Your Own Instagram Algorithm”. An algorithm is simply a set of instructions one follows. I don't believe that we should give ourselves over to Instagram's algorithm. I believe that we should dictate how IG serves us, our ambitions, and our businesses. Click here to view "Define Your Own Instagram Algorithm: A Guided Tutorial to Making Instagram a Joyful, Effective Place for You."   As always, I do love to hear from you and I earnestly hope that you...

I’m a Victim of the ISIS Flag Hack on Facebook

A year ago this week, I became a victim of the ISIS Flag Hack on Facebook. One minute I was in my garage, recording a behind-the-scenes video on Instagram stories, and the next minute, IG had kicked me out. I was irritated when I couldn't get back in. But when I went upstairs and saw all my passwords had been changed (bypassing two factor authentication), I was terrified. In this very short podcast episode (the only solo episode I ever released), I share my story of being hacked, the stories of 3 other victims (and why one is suing Facebook), how you can protect yourself, and my plan as I prepared to re-launch on Instagram. For full text of the episode, scroll down. Update One Year Later: About 8 weeks after I published this episode, I also published this one: Episode 039: 4 Things I Lost, 8 Things I Gained, and How YOU Can Benefit From My Hack I was also interviewed about Facebook/Instagram security in this episode of the Eat Capture Share Podcast with Kimberly Espinel: #53 What's Happening With Instagram Resources For Your Business You really do not need to live in fear of a hack. I've written a 15 Step Plan you can implement to defend your business: I wish that I never had to start all over on Instagram. My account was rapidly approaching the magical 10K and I had a lot of momentum for the podcast building on that platform. However, it wasn't all bad. The reality of starting from scratch made me reassess my approach to Instagram. Ultimately, I walked away with an approach that was healthier for me and more effective at growing my business. I'd love that for you too, so I created this 18 prompt guided journal for you: Full Text (Edited) [00:00:00] Well, good morning for me, maybe it's good afternoon or good evening to you.    [00:00:16] I am getting closer to either having my Instagram account reinstated or much more likely having to start fresh with a new one. In the meantime, I wanted to let you know a little bit more about this hack that I've experienced, what I've learned so far, and hopefully maybe even a couple things that could help you and me in the future, maybe not be in a situation like this.   [00:00:50] Unfortunately, hackers are good. They're motivated. They know what they're doing. And as you'll hear as I talk about this more, I'm not so sure any of us are ever completely safe. But let's see what we can do.   [00:01:03] So I'm going to start sharing about this experience, actually, from my brother-in-law's perspective. It was what he saw that gave me the clue into what was happening with me and allowed me to do all the helpful research that I've done over the last week or so.   [00:01:19] About 2:45pm last Monday, July 14th, he happened to be on Facebook. He got a notification that my profile picture had changed. So he clicked on it and he saw that my profile picture had been changed to a black flag with white markings on it.   [00:01:40] He didn't recognize this image, so he did a reverse Google look up and saw that it was the ISIS flag. So he switched back to Facebook to let me know. And by that time, my account had already been disabled.   [00:01:57] From my perspective, I knew nothing of this. I didn't even hear that from him until 24 hours later, from my perspective, I was actually in my garage. I was having a great time. I was getting ready to do a shoot. Marcus, my 13 year old who has been doing my behind the scenes videos, was getting set up. I had just published a different Instagram TV video that morning, all about using light in food photography. I was getting a lot of reactions. I was interacting with those. And just as I got ready to take a selfie with Marcus, my 13 year old, I, I couldn't I couldn't take the selfie because I wasn't on Instagram anymore. It actually reverted me to a different account. And I'll tell you in a minute why that account was not disabled.

Tom Service meets American composer, and multi-media artist Laurie Anderson to find how music and language interacts in her work to create stories and define who we are which are just two of the themes running through her new book 'All the Things I Lost in the Flood', and her new album, 'Landfall', with the Kronos Quartet: projects born from her experiences of Hurricane Sandy which hit New York city in October 2012. Music writer and broadcaster Stephen Johnson discusses his new book 'How Shostakovich Changed my Mind' which explores his struggles with depression and how Shostakovich's tempestuous symphonies and soulful string quartets helped him and the composer's fellow Russians in the darkest of hours. There's a report from Moscow on the news that the British Council has to cease operations in Russia, and, Tom meets one of the most exciting young artists in New York today: Tyondai Braxton. In advance of the premiere of his new work 'Telekinesis', Tyondai shares his thoughts on electronic music, deep exposure to Morton Feldman, and how Stravinsky, Varese and other 20th century composers could be better taught in colleges and universities. Produced by Richard Denison.
