Mitzi Shore (1930-2018) is known for opening the Comedy Store, a famous workshop and performance space for up and coming comics. She was the ultimate curator of young talent, and a mentor for many comedians over the years. Mitzi offered talented performers a chance to make it big. They transgressed societal norms through comedy and often spoke out against injustice using their sharp wit. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn't help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we'll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. The bite-sized episodes pack painstakingly researched content into fun, entertaining, and addictive daily adventures. Taylor Williamson's obsession with comedy led him to club gigs as a teenager and national press coverage praising “the 19-year-old's cerebral wit.” But Taylor tells Marc he was ready to give up on his dreams after a few years of the comedy grind. They talk about how America's Got Talent was his salvation, what he learned after a decade of projects that almost got off the ground, and why he taped his new special at The Comedy Store, a place he views with equal parts gratitude and resentment. Today on part two of our interview with Lili Haydn on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we continue our story about how Lili grew up in the most unconventional way in Hollywood and came out of it a Grammy winner in spite of the amazing conclusion we discuss today. In part one, Lili gave us the background on her mother Lotus Wienstock who was a trail blazing stand-up comedian who wrote books like The Lotus Position & opened The Comedy Store's Belly Room for female comedians. She found herself as one of the new faces of stand-up comedy just prior to the 80's comedy boom that happened shortly thereafter. Lili's bond with her mother was palpable in this episode but we also learn more about her father, a man named David Jove who counted among his friends the Grateful Dead's L.S.D. connection/soundman Bear as well as musician Peter Ivers whose death as the host of a show conceived by Jove is still an unsolved mystery today, This was one of those episodes that left us emotionally spent as Lili was incredibly open and honest about her complicated relationship with her father. She didn't hold back which was a very brave thing to do in an interview and we thank her for it. Take a listen to part two of our interview w/ Lili Haydn on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.
From his MTV days to his 90s comedy flicks like "Encino Man" and "Bio-Dome"...Pauly Shore helped define funny in the 90s.Being raised by the legends who passed through his family owned venue "The Comedy Store"...Pauly pursued the path of laughs with or without the support of his family. In this episode, he talks about the therapy of comedy, and how a meme turned into a movement for a Richard Simmons biopic. This could Shore-ly be an Oscar winning role!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's time to munch on some grindage, buddies, and celebrate this delicious turkey holiday by looking back at when Carla Gugino brought home Pauly Shore for Thanksgiving in the 1993 comedy classic 'Son-in-Law!''Son-in-Law' is Pauly Shore's highest rated movie on the Tomatometer at 32%, but our panel fervently disagrees with its abysmal rating as they can't get enough of Shore's 'Crawl.'Special guest and comedian Justine Marino joins Mark and Jacqueline to discuss whether Rotten Tomatoes is Wrong about the cultural phenomenon that was Pauly Shore in 'Son-in-Law.'What is your favorite Pauly Shore movie? Do you think 'Son-in-Law' deserves such a low rating? Or do you side more with the audience and its 59% rating? If you'd like to give your thoughts on this movie or have another movie you feel like Rotten Tomatoes got wrong, email us at RTisWrong@RottenTomatoes.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we take a listen to part one of our conversation with Lili Haydn, the Grammy winning composer and performer who has perhaps the most fascinating and most brutally honest story we've ever recorded. It was so jam packed and unbelievable that we didn't even get a chance to ask her about what it was like starring in Easy Money with Rodney Dangerfield and Joe Pesci. And if you are a listener to this podcast, does that sound like something Josh would pass up? Well, part one of our interview with Lili will tell you all you need to know as to why. Oh the things we learn on this episode. Lili and Josh connect on the fact that he was once at a Mose Allison show and Lili asked to perform with him at the Catalina in Los Angeles back in the 90s. What are the odds? But it's Lili's mother, stand-up comedian/writer Lotus Weinstock and her father David Jove that take up the bulk of the conversation. And for good reason. We touch on subjects as diverse as performing with Jimmy Page, her mother founding The Belly Room at The Comedy Store, Lenny Bruce, the infamous Redlands bust of the Rolling Stones, New Wave Theater, The Source Family, Stanley Owsley, Chevy Chase, Peter Ivers and Joan Rivers. All we can tell you is that this barely scratches the surface. This part one episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast is one of the most intense, harrowing, amazing and truthful episodes we have ever done. Take a listen.
On episode 27 of The Ian Ira Rousso Show, I spoke to comedian and author, Lue Deck, who I met at a storytelling show in January. I read about some of Lue's experiences in William Knoedelseder's “I'm Dying Up Here”, a book whose accounts became the inspiration of the Showtime series of the same name. Some of these stories left me in absolute awe so when I finished, I invited Lue to be on the podcast. In the early-1970's, Lue quit law to pursue comedy in Houston before moving to Los Angeles where he found work at The World-Famous Comedy Store both on Sunset and in Westwood. Dubbed one of Mitzi's Boys, Lue would work with soon-to-be household names, originated The Comedy Channel and eventually becoming the club's archivist, as well as the head of security. The camaraderie of the young club was put to the test in 1979 when much of the club's talent would go on strike; an issue that has caused contention even 45 years later. Lue talks about his experience working The Comedy Store during the strike, as well as some of the remaining tension with a then soon-to-be Tonight Show even today. Over the course of a career most new to this business would only dream of (including myself), Lue has performed stand-up comedy all over the WORLD. He recalls fondly of getting to perform in North and South Korea literally AT THE SAME TIME, performing for Apple, Microsoft and NASA, as well as a story of performing for the president of The Philippines; a story that he says resulted in the best thing that's ever happened as the result of being a comedian. When you have a career that long, you might have some wisdom to dispense. Lue's is to learn to say “thank you” in as many languages as you can. For him, it's literally 40! I know TWO! That, and it all starts with a smile! Lue has performed thousands and thousands of shows; clubs, USO tours. He was featured in “I Am Sam Kinison” and even had the honor of being nominated for a Peabody award. He has a book out now called Stand-Up Decoded. This was one of those episodes where I tried listening far more than I did talking. Did I knock it out of the park? Absolutely not! However, I am absolutely grateful for the opportunity. Anna, a trained black-belt, she's fought her way to the top of LA's competitive stand-up scene with sheer force of will and killer jokes. She can easily roast the audience, other comics, and herself with equal aplomb. Episode 422, "The Harkening." I harken back to Rob telling me "everyone gets afraid, dummy." (It's Not Just You, Murray!) I have to watch out for "Drum fever." I harken back to when I said I thought The Marvels was gonna bomb, and it did. I harken back to the motion picture Lethal Weapon 2, and discover they go to my Subway in it! I harken back to this past Saturday, which was effectively Luke Allen's Day Off (minus anyone looking even remotely like Simone being around me) Unfortunately it left me with one of the worst hangovers Ive ever had. I offer my thoughts and insights to the new David Fincher flick, "The Killer."

Something different for you today. Dan Bialek is here. Dan is currently a pretty accomplished copywriter, and social media strategist, and operator of the Amazing Comedy Theater in Orange County. But for our purposes today, he used t run 12 Shiny Nickels in Los Angeles. And he used to be the #1 comedian on MySpace Comedy. Until recently, 12 Shiny Nickels was the best show experience I've had in Los Angeles. It's where I met most of the LA comics I know. It's where I taped my first TV set for Last Call with Carson Daly. And I thought if I were to do an LA version of my book, I'd definitely do a chapter on Dan or that show. Plus, the story of how he became the #1 comic on MySpace is pretty epic.

For those that have listened to the podcast regularly you will have heard me bring up today's guest cooouuuntless times. You've heard me talk at length about his comedic abilities and even with how difficult it is to rank comics, anyone with half a brain has Brad at the very top of their lists. That is why it is such an honour to have him on the podcast to chop it up! He recently recorded a comedy special @themoonyeg and it was nothing short of spectacular! Everyone already knew Brad had the comedy chops to slay a room but to watch him deal with curveball after curveball, learn on the fly, adapt in the moment and rise to the challenge of getting that elusive comedy magic on film was unbelievable. We talk through the weekend of recording, the emotions surrounding it, Brad's entry into the comedy game at 17 and so much more! Brad is currently giving Toronto a crash course in how to fuck shit up but he will be back in Edmonton before you know it and you don't want to miss him when he does!Follow @ihatebrad on instagram and grab tickets the very next time you have the chance because this kid could pop at any moment and then you'll be battling scalpers just to see him perform! Also go follow @thevondubcast @nickvondub @themoonyeg @trishs.asylum and I will love you forever!

We're keeping the laughs going as we continue our For the Love of Funny series–and this week we've got Kevin James Thornton, a comedian and entertainer, who, after spending his youth in a fundamentalist church in the 90's, found a lot to laugh about. After moving to LA to make his way on stages at the Comedy Store and as an actor, Kevin wasn't sure he was happy with how his life was going. After a move to Nashville and some serious contemplation about where to go next, the pandemic hit. Bored at home, Kevin discovered a little thing called TikTok and decided it might be fun to share some of the stories of what it was like to grow up gay in a fundamentalist church in the 90's, and much to his surprise his videos were wildly successful. At 50 years old, Kevin had found his niche, and now he brings his unique brand of comedy (often sung as a story through an auto-tune device—because it was the 90's, after all) ) with audiences across the U.S. and Europe and with over 2 million followers on social media. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! James Fritz joins us to celebrate our 300th episode. Fritz, "The John Prine of Comedy", started comedy in the great state of Chicago. After ruining his credit score there, he made his way to sunny Los Angeles to absolutely, 100% embrace the relentlessly positive West Coast lifestyle. He was named “Best Stand-up” by the Chicago Reader. The Chicago Tribune called his comedy “a seamless blend of humor, honesty and fearlessness." He was featured at the High Plains Comedy Festival, Bridgetown Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs Chicago, Red Clay Festival, and The Fest in Gainesville. Since moving to LA, he has performed at The Meltdown, Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen, The Comedy Store, The Hollywood Improv, Dynasty Typewriter, UCB, and co-hosted the beloved east side late night shows Babe Island and Night Coffee. His album Still Together was released by ASpecialThing Records to enthusiastic reviews and he has since worked on Squidbillies and been seen on HBOMax and Adult Swim. He currently works on The Frankie Quinones Show podcast and hopes to one day make enough money to leave the country.
