Day 2915 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 146:1-10 Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2915 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2915 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The title for today's Wisdom-Trek is: The Sovereign Creator and the Frailty of Princes – Unveiling the Eternal Helper On our previous podcast, on Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Thirteen, we reached a momentous milestone in our journey through the Book of Psalms, as we closed out Psalm One Hundred Forty-Five—the very last psalm explicitly attributed to King David in the Psalter. In that glorious acrostic hymn, we listened as the old warrior king handed off the baton of praise to every generation, exalting Yahweh's unsearchable greatness, His open-handed generosity, and His everlasting kingdom. Today, as we step onto Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Fifteen of our trek, we enter a brand-new, breathtaking chapter in the Psalms. We are beginning what biblical scholars call the "Final Hallel"—a grand, five-psalm crescendo comprised of Psalms One Hundred Forty-Six through One Hundred Fifty. Every single one of these five concluding psalms begins and ends with the majestic Hebrew command: Hallelu-YAH—Praise the Lord! We are moving from the individual testimony of David into the unanimous, triumphant doxology of the entire redeemed assembly. Today, we step directly onto the trail of Psalm One Hundred Forty-Six, verses one through ten, discovering where true human hope must be anchored. The first segment is: The Unceasing Vow: Praise with Every Dying Breath Let us open our ears to the exuberant opening movement of this psalm, where the writer groups his initial thoughts together in verse one and verse two. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul. I will praise the Lord as long as I live. I will sing praises to my God with my dying breath. The psalmist begins with a passionate, double declaration of praise, commanding his own inner being: “Praise the Lord, O my soul!” He vows to pour out praise to Yahweh as long as he lives, continuing this song of adoration even with his very dying breath. To fully grasp the theological depth of these opening lines, we must view them through the Ancient Israelite divine-council worldview. In the ancient mindset, human life-breath—known as neshamah or ruach—was not merely a biological phenomenon. It was the direct, miraculous gift of life imparted into human nostrils by the Sovereign Creator Himself. The gods of the surrounding pagan nations were lifeless idols, carved from stone or wood, completely unable to breathe, speak, or grant life to their worshippers. But Yahweh is the vibrant, uncreated Source of all animated existence! Therefore, as long as divine breath fills human lungs, that breath is designed to return to its Source in continuous, grateful worship. The psalmist pledges that even when physical strength wanes, and the body approaches the grave, the final sound slipping past human lips will be an anthem of praise to the King of heaven. The second segment is: The Folly of Trusting Mortals: Princes Returning to Dust The narrative takes a stark, brilliant turn in verse three and verse four, contrasting the eternal God with the extreme frailty of human political power. Don't put your trust in human leaders; no human can save you. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Here, the psalmist issues an urgent, unvarnished warning: “Don't put your trust in human leaders; no human can save you.” He explains that when their breath departs, these leaders return to the dust of the earth, and on that exact day, all their grand political, economic, and military plans dissolve into absolute nothingness. To truly appreciate this warning, we must examine it through the cosmic framework of ancient history. In the ancient Near East, kings, princes, and emperors routinely claimed divine status, presenting themselves as living gods or unique representatives of powerful spiritual principalities. Subjects were tempted to place their ultimate hope, national security, and personal salvation in these powerful monarchs. But the psalmist strips away all royal pretense! He deliberately uses the Hebrew word adam for human, reminding us that even the most powerful prince is made of adamah—mere dust from the ground. When a mortal leader dies, his spirit leaves him, his body decays back into the soil, and every policy, treaty, and military campaign he engineered vanishes instantly. In a world full of shifting geopolitics, human arrogance, and ideological promises, true wisdom urges us never to anchor our ultimate trust in mortal leaders who cannot even save themselves. The third segment is: The Cosmic Creator: The Unshakeable Anchor of Hope Having exposed the futility of trusting in mortals, the psalmist points us directly to the unshakeable anchor of true joy, combining the logical thoughts found in verse five and verse six. But joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is in the Lord their God. He made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. He keeps every promise forever. The text bursts forth with a glorious beatitude, declaring, “Joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is in the Lord their God.” The writer then grounds this joy in Yahweh's cosmic credentials, proclaiming that He made heaven, earth, the sea, and everything in them, and that He keeps every promise forever! This is a massive, explicit claim of supreme cosmic authority! In the ancient divine-council worldview, foreign nations believed that their localized deities ruled specific, limited domains—Baal ruled the skies and weather, Yam ruled the chaotic seas, and Mot ruled the underworld. But the psalmist declares that Yahweh, the God of Jacob, is the singular, ultimate Architect of all three cosmic tiers: heaven, earth, and the roaring oceans! While human rulers break treaties, default on promises, and pass away into dust, the Creator of the cosmos remains forever faithful. His character is unchangeable, His power is limitless, and His covenants are backed by the full, eternal authority of His heavenly throne. The fourth segment is: The King of Justice: Liberator, Healer, and Protector The psalmist now unfolds the practical, compassionate expression of Yahweh's rule on earth, weaving together the contiguous thoughts in verse seven, verse eight, and verse nine. He gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. The Lord frees the prisoners. The Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are weighed down. The Lord loves the godly. The Lord protects the foreigners among us. He cares for the orphans and widows, but he frustrates the plans of the wicked. Look at this magnificent, nine-fold manifesto of divine justice! Yahweh gives justice to the oppressed, food to the hungry, freedom to prisoners, vision to the blind, and comfort to those weighed down by life's heavy burdens. He loves the godly, protects vulnerable foreigners, and sustains orphans and widows, while actively dismantling and frustrating the schemes of the wicked. This passage provides a staggering portrait of divine kingdom ethics. In the ancient world, pagan deities and earthly tyrants catered exclusively to the elite, exploiting the poor, the stranger, and the fatherless to build their monuments. But Yahweh proves His supreme kingship precisely by championing the most vulnerable and marginalized members of society! Notice how every single action is prefixed with the divine name: The Lord frees, The Lord opens eyes, The Lord lifts up, The Lord protects! This list directly anticipates the miracle ministry of Jesus Christ, who entered human history to fulfill these exact words—healing the blind, feeding the hungry, liberating spiritual captives, and bringing the gospel to the poor. Furthermore, while Yahweh embraces the humble, He sets Himself in direct opposition to the arrogant, ensuring that their oppressive plans will ultimately crumble into chaos. Day 2914– “Joyful Return, Insightful Response”  based on Luke 10:17-24 Putnam Church Message – 07/19/2026 The Good News According to Luke: “Joyful Return, Insightful Response.”   Last time our message was “Practical Talk to Those in Ministry,” where we learned to leave the harvest in the hands of the Lord who is the Lord of the harvest. Today, we continue with our thirtieth message from Luke's narrative of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Today's message is: “Joyful Return, Insightful Response.” Our core passage today is Luke 10:17-24, on page 1612 of your pew Bibles. The Seventy-Two Return 17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” 18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” 21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. 22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” 23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.” Opening Prayer Father, we come before You today with joy and humility. Thank You for calling ordinary people into Your Kingdom work. Thank You that the name of Jesus is greater than every power of darkness, every accusation of the enemy, and every fear that troubles our hearts. Lord Jesus, help us rejoice in the right things. Teach us to celebrate Your victories without becoming proud of our usefulness. Remind us that our greatest joy is not what we accomplish for You, but that we belong to You. Open our eyes to see what prophets and kings longed to see. Give us childlike hearts that receive Your truth with faith and obedience. Holy Spirit, guide us now as we listen to Your Word. Amen. Introduction: A Story - Returning From the Battle In the early nineties, a few years after Desert Storm, General Norman Schwarzkopf wrote an autobiography titled It Doesn't Take a Hero. Near the middle of the book, he describes his thoughts as he headed for his first combat command position in Vietnam. He was a West Point graduate, full of energy and idealism. He went to Vietnam, as he said, for “God, country, and Mom's apple pie.” But later, after a second tour of duty, he returned from a battle-scarred landscape where young men under his command had died or had lost parts of their bodies to landmines. He came home to a divided nation, and he wrote with exhausted realism, “I realized then I was really tired of being a commander… I thought, Thank God it's over. I'd saved as many lives as I could… I wanted to get home to my family.” Same geography. Same war. Same mission. But what a difference between the man who went out and the man who returned. In Luke 10, the seventy-two whom Jesus sent out also return from the battlefield. But the seventy-two return with joy. In our last message, “Practical Talk to Those in Ministry,” we watched Jesus send them out two by two. He told them the harvest was great and the workers were few. He sent them like lambs among wolves. He told them to travel light, offer peace, heal the sick, and announce that the Kingdom of God had come near. They went out as messengers of the King. / Now they return. And they come back like children running through the door after seeing something amazing. “Lord,” they say, “even the demons obey us when we use Your name!” They had gone out to announce peace, but they discovered that the name of Jesus also carried authority over the powers of darkness. Jesus rejoices with them. But He also corrects their perspective. He lifts their eyes above the thrill of ministry success and says, in effect, “Yes, rejoice that evil is retreating. But do not build your joy on power. Rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” That is our theme today: The greatest joy of a disciple is not what we do for Jesus, but that we belong to Jesus. Which brings us to our four truths today which are found in your bulletin insert on the side that is titled: Joyful Return, Insightful Response Main Point 1: Kingdom Ministry Pushes Back the Powers of Darkness The seventy-two return with joy and say, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use Your name.” That little word “even” carries their surprise. Jesus had told them to heal the sick and announce the Kingdom. But apparently, as they ministered in His name, demons also submitted. They saw firsthand that the mission of Jesus was not merely moral improvement, social kindness, or religious instruction. It was war against the dominion of evil. Luke has been showing us this from the beginning. Jesus confronted demons in the synagogue. He delivered the man in the region of the Gerasenes. He gave the Twelve authority over demons. He healed the boy whom His disciples could not help. And now the seventy-two discover that the authority of Jesus extends through them as well. This is where we need to understand the Bible's bigger supernatural worldview. The late Dr. Michael S. Heiser often reminded readers that the Bible presents a spiritual world populated by heavenly beings. In the Old Testament, we see scenes of God's heavenly council, sometimes called the Divine Council. God is the Most High, the Creator, the supreme King. But Scripture also shows lesser spiritual beings who serve, rebel, accuse, deceive, or oppose God's purposes. In Job 1 and 2, we meet “The Satan,” or “the adversary,” appearing among the heavenly beings. In that setting, the word functions like a title — the accuser, the challenger, the prosecutor. By the time we reach the New Testament, Satan is clearly presented as the great enemy of God's people, the tempter, the accuser, the ruler of a rebellious kingdom of darkness. So, when Jesus says in Luke 10:18, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning,” He is not giving the disciples a small compliment. He is interpreting their ministry as part of a cosmic victory. Every sick person healed, every demon rebuked, every message of Kingdom peace proclaimed — all of it was evidence that the usurper's rule was cracking. The adversary was falling. Object Lesson: The Flashlight in a Dark Room Imagine turning off the lights in a room and then switching on a flashlight. The darkness does not negotiate. / It does not hold a committee meeting. / It simply retreats where the light shines. That is what happens when the Kingdom of God advances. When Jesus walks into a synagogue, demons cry out. When Jesus steps into Gentile territory, a legion of demons loses its captive. When Jesus sends out His followers, evil spirits submit to His name. Not because the disciples are impressive, but because the King is present through them. Ancient Israelite Context For a first-century Jewish listener, this would not sound like a mere private spiritual experience. It would sound like the long-awaited victory of God. Genesis 3:15 promised that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent's head. Psalm 91 spoke of trampling lions and serpents underfoot. Daniel 7 envisioned the Son of Man receiving authority, glory, and sovereign power. The prophets looked forward to the day when God would defeat evil and restore creation. Now Jesus says, “You are seeing the beginning of that victory.” The Kingdom has come near. Day 2910 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 145:1-7 Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2908 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2910 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The Title for today's Wisdom-Trek is: The Unsearchable Majesty – Passing the Torch of Praise Across Generations On our previous expedition, on Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Eight, we concluded our study of Psalm One Hundred Forty-Four with a breathtaking vision of kingdom flourishing. We listened as King David moved out of the smoky, chaotic fray of battle, praying for sturdy sons, elegant daughters, overflowing barns, and safe city streets, crowning his prayer with that unforgettable, majestic beatitude: “Joyful indeed are those whose God is the Lord!” Today, as we step onto a glorious new summit along our multi-month trek through the Book of Psalms, we advance directly into Psalm One Hundred Forty-Five, verses one through seven. This psalm marks a monumental milestone in our entire series. It is the very last psalm in the Psalter explicitly attributed to King David, and it functions as a grand, royal gateway into the final doxology of the Old Testament. In the preceding psalms—from Psalm One Hundred Forty through One Hundred Forty-Four—we heard David crying out in intense distress, begging for rescue from violent men, hidden nets, and deceptive tongues. But here, in Psalm One Hundred Forty-Five, the prayers for deliverance fall silent, and pure, uninhibited, kingdom praise takes center stage. David lays down his military sword, picks up his golden harp, and leads the entire cosmos in an eternal song of adoration. The first segment is: The Vow of the Viceroy: Exalting the Supreme King Let us open our hearts to the opening lines of this magnificent acrostic hymn, as recorded in the New Living Translation, grouping together the contiguous, deeply connected thoughts found in verse one and verse two. I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever. I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever. David opens this royal anthem with a passionate, deeply personal commitment, shouting, “I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever. I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever.” To fully appreciate the profound, revolutionary nature of these opening words, we must view them through the fascinating lens of the Ancient Israelite divine-council worldview. In the ancient Near East, earthly kings routinely claimed divine status for themselves. Pagan rulers built massive monuments, claiming to be absolute lords over their territory, demanding that their subjects bow before their supreme authority. But here stands King David—the undisputed, victorious monarch of Israel, the ruler of an expanding empire—and what does he do? He looks up into the heavens, and addresses Yahweh directly as “my God and King.” David recognizes a fundamental cosmic truth: his own royal authority is merely derivative. He is not the ultimate sovereign; he is merely the earthly viceroy, the covenant servant of the true King who sits enthroned above the celestial assembly of heaven. Notice, also, the dynamic rhythm of David's devotional life expressed in these two verses. He bridges the immediate present with the infinite future. He declares that he will praise God “every day”—establishing a discipline of consistent, daily worship along the dusty trails of life—while simultaneously declaring that this praise will endure “forever and ever.” David understands that praising the name of Yahweh—which represents His revealed character, His covenant reputation, and His supreme authority—is not a temporary earthly chore. It is the primary, joyful occupation of human beings and heavenly hosts alike, stretching past the boundaries of mortality directly into eternity. The second segment is: The Unsearchable Realm: Cosmic Greatness Beyond Measure The narrative of David's praise expands rapidly outward from his personal devotion to the infinite reality of God's nature, as recorded in verse three. Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness. David proclaims with unshakeable conviction, “Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness.” This singular verse serves as the foundational theological anchor for the entire psalm. When David exclaims that Yahweh is “great” and “most worthy of praise,” he is making a bold, cosmic comparison against all other powers in existence. In the ancient Israelite worldview, the cosmos was populated by various spiritual beings—angels, guardians, and fallen principalities. But Yahweh stands in a category completely by Himself. He is not merely the chief deity among many; He is the uncreated Creator, the absolute Master of the divine council, and the Lord of all earthly nations. Consider that remarkable phrase: “No one can measure his greatness.” In the original Hebrew, it literally reads, his greatness has no searching out. Every created entity in the universe—whether a human king, a mighty mountain, a blazing star, or a high-ranking angelic spirit—has boundaries, dimensions, and limitations. They can be measured, mapped, and comprehended. But the greatness of Yahweh is unfathomable, bottomless, and infinite! You can swim in the ocean of His glory for ten thousand years, and you will never hit bottom. Because His majesty is completely beyond human and angelic measurement, the praise offered to Him can never be exhausted. There will always be new depths of His character to discover, and new reasons to lift our voices in awe. The third segment is: The Legacy of Praise: Passing the Torch Across Generations Having established the unsearchable greatness of the King, David turns his attention to how this glorious reality is transmitted through human history, linking his contiguous thoughts together in verse four and verse five. Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. David outlines the divine relay race of truth, praying, “Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles.” Here, right at the center of Psalm One Hundred Forty-Five, we encounter the very heart and soul of our Wisdom-Trek mission: creating a living legacy! David realizes that the incredible truths of God's redemptive power must never be locked away in the past, nor can they be assumed to automatically transfer to the future. Faithfulness requires an intentional, intergenerational handoff. One generation must stand face-to-face with the next generation, actively recounting the “mighty acts” and “power” of Yahweh. In ancient Israel, this meant teaching children about the deliverance from Egypt, the splitting of the Red Sea, the thunderous revelation at Mount Sinai, and the faithful provision in the wilderness. For us today, it means testifying to our children and grandchildren about the ultimate victory of King Jesus, and sharing the concrete ways God has proven faithful in our own family histories. Notice, however, that David does not view this intergenerational legacy as a cold, academic history lesson. Look at verse five! He combines public proclamation with deep, quiet, personal contemplation, declaring, “I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles.” The Hebrew phrasing here—hod ve-hadar—describes the radiant, terrifying beauty and regal dignity of a monarch sitting in His heavenly throne room. David takes time to slow down his racing mind, fixing his thoughts on the dazzling sple“dor of God's character. True legacy flows out of deep, private meditation. When we spend time contemplating the awe-inspiring miracles of God in the secret place, our public testimony to the next generation gains an irresistible, vibrant warmth. The forth segment is: The Cascading Fountain: Awe-Inspiring Deeds and Overflowing Goodness The narrative reaches a magnificent, joyful crescendo as David describes the infectious, widespread impact of God's mighty works, combining his final logical thoughts in verse six and verse seven.
