On this spooky season edition of Parallax Views, documentarian Joe O'Connell joins us to discuss his latest feature, RONDO AND BOB, about the parallel lives of Robert A. Burns, the behind-the-scenes art force behind such cult classic horror movies as Tober Hooper's THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, Stuart Gordon's RE-ANIMATOR, Joe Dante's THE HOWLING, and Wes Craven's THE HILLS HAVE EYES, and Rondo Hatton, an acromelgaly-afflicted journalist of the early 20th century who made his way to Hollywood to become Tinsel Town's 1940s equivalent to monster movie icon Boris Karloff. Before getting into RONDO AND BOB, however, Joe and I discuss his previous documentary DANGER MAN. Said film focused on the life and times of stuntman Gary Kent, who was involved with a plethora of B-movie and independent films in the 1960s and 1970s. Kent also is one of the stuntmen upon which Brad Pitt's character in Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON TIME IN HOLLYWOOD was based. Specifically, the fact that Gary Kent had an encounter with Charles Manson while filming a movie on Spahn Ranch (where the Manson Family were living before the Tate/LaBianca murders) became a plot point in the aforementioned Tarantino feature. We then delve into the stories of Bob Burns and Rondo Hatton, including the similarities and differences in their lives. Burns was someone who appeared normal on the outside but was an eccentric in life and also felt unlovable. Rondo, most known for his appearances as "The Creeper" in films like the Sherlock Holmes caper PEARL OF DEATH, HOUSE OF HORRORS, and THE BRUTE MAN, appeared odd on the outside but was a normal, affable, and much loved man in his every day life. What can we learn from the lives of these two creative individuals who lived life on their on terms? That's the question in this fascinating edition of Parallax Views. He was the second actor to portray fictional British secret agent James Bond in the Eon Productions film series, playing the character in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). Having appeared in only one film, Lazenby's tenure as Bond was the shortest among the actors in the series. Beginning his professional career as a model, Lazenby had only acted in commercials when he was cast to replace original Bond actor Sean Connery.[2] He declined to return in subsequent Bond films and instead pursued roles in films throughout the 1970s that included Universal Soldier (1971), Who Saw Her Die? (1972), The Shrine of Ultimate Bliss (1974), The Man from Hong Kong (1975) and The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977). After his career stalled during this period, he moved into business and invested in real estate. Lazenby later appeared in roles that parodied the James Bond character. In 2017, a Hulu docudrama film, Becoming Bond, featured Lazenby recounting his life story and portrayal as Bond.[3]

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss The Expendables 2. Emboldened by the surprise success of the original, this sequel adds such heavy hitters as Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris to the mix. After rescuing a Chinese doctor, the Expendables are given a mission to retrieve a secure laptop from a downed plane in Albania. Nuclear arms dealer Jean Vilain (Jean-Claude Van Damme) shows up to snatch up the computer and murder new addition to the crew Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth). Book (Chuck Norris) shows up to help our tired heroes. Going for a lighter tone than the first, The Expendables 2 is a vast improvement over the original. Director Simon West (Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) gives scenes more of an epic scope with a clearer sense of fight choreography. Brian Tyler's score is nondescript other than the rumbling titular Expendables musical cue. The Expendables 2 is what the original movie should have been. Thrasher enjoyed the new horror movie Hell Fest. He also went on an old-school anime kick with Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer. Mat liked the swinging 1960s sexy exploits of one-time James Bond actor George Lazenby in the Hulu documentary Becoming Bond. He's also been getting into the vintage Michael Palin BBC series Around the World in 80 Days. According to the Express, an anonymous LA source has claimed the following regarding the ongoing scripting process: “The production company have reached out to several writers to suggest plot ideas and twists for Bond in Daniel's final outing. They wanted ideas that had not been seen in their franchise before to try to shake things up. One idea was for Bond finally to move beyond flirting and one liners and actually share a romance with Moneypenny. But that idea was nixed as it would go against the whole relationship built up during their screen careers.” * This seems in line with comments Naomi Harris has recently made regarding her off-screen relationship with Daniel Craig and how their chemistry plays on screen: "Chemistry is something you either have or don't have, so its a real gamble when people cast you, because you just never know whether the chemistry's going to work. Sometimes you have couples who are dating in real life and they have no chemistry on screen whatsoever so you just never know. I am just lucky that it works with Daniel and I'm looking forward to coming back.” * While she doesn't outright state it, her comments seem to suggest a continuation of the platonic-but-flirtatious dynamic we have seen thus far in the series.* Fincher Interview: Maybe tackle a Bond film? * In a recent interview with Empire, David Fincher revealed that he would not want to do a Star Wars film due to the immense pressure; adding that he had discussed helming the upcoming Episode 9 with Kathleen Kennedy, but ultimately declined. * While this doesn't directly pertain to Bond, David Fincher is a name that has come up frequently surrounding the Bond franchise, but is an idea that has often been dismissed owing to Fincher's seeming aversion to franchise films. But with this news that he considered Star Wars, does this mean he may consider Bond at some point down the track?Q-Branch* The Man With The Golden Gun Manuscript Emerges * A one-of-a-kind author's proof of 'The Man With The Golden Gun' has emerged that contains Ian Fleming's revisions to his original manuscript for his final James Bond novel. The corrected typescript is 182 numbered pages of typed foolscap, with five further preliminary pages and a single sheet of suggested (later adopted) corrections by Kingsley Amis, all bound in a cloth folder. Authorial revisions in Ian Fleming's handwriting cover approximately 80 pages with further editorial revisions in green and black ink. Fleming's corrections are mainly quite significant, rewriting entire sentences, adding or removing paragraphs, etc* Becoming Bond hitting Blu-Ray & DVD on Nov. 14th* The Best of John Barry (AKA Bond) Concert in London * If you're in London on November 16, check out PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA's THE BEST OF JOHN BARRY - BOND AND BEYOND concert at the Royal Festival Hall. Get fitted for your tux because it's time for Episode 2 of The Words Are Not Enough!In this episode Griffin (@griffschiller) and Brody (@brodyserravalli) discuss the following:Tomorrow Never Lies* James Bond Rights * http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/apple-amazon-join-race-james-bond-film-rights-1035539 * Fresh off the presses today is some new development into which company may land the film distribution rights to the highly coveted James Bond franchise. * While Warner Bros. remains in the lead to land film distribution rights, Apple and Amazon have unexpextedly thrown their hats into the ring. * MGM has been looking for a deal for more than two years, and Sony, Universal and Fox had also been pursuing the property, with Warners and Sony the most aggressive. * However, according to sources in contact with the Hollywood Reporter, the tech giants are willing to spend in the same ballpark as Warners, if not much more, for the rights. * They consider Bond one of the last untapped brands (like a Marvel, Pixar or Lucasfilm) that could act as a game-changer in the content space. Apple's and Amazon's inclusion in the chase would indicate that more is on the table than film rights, including the future of the franchise if MGM will sell or license out for the right price. * Sources say newly arrived executives Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht (former co-presidents of Sony Pictures Television) are spearheading the effort on Apple's behalf - suggesting they may be interested in also bringing Bond to television stating, “In the world of Lucasfilm and Marvel, Bond feels really underdeveloped" * Valuation of the franchise may be anywhere between $2 billion and $5 billion, says an insider. * Other sources insist that, at this stage, Eon producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G.
