In case you haven't noticed, the market's been in a rally ever since the April lows. Investor sentiment is finally turning more extreme-bullish. The whole Tariff thing is not A Thing; the Debt Crisis is not A Thing; World War 3 is not A Thing. Investors are starting to look past all this, and sentiment is on the rise. Markets on Wednesday knocked on the door of another all-time high; the NASDAQ achieved that milestone. Again. And it is possible the S&P will set a new, all-time high this week. Under the surface, things are over bought but not extremely stretched. July tends to be an event stronger month; August/September tend to be a lot weaker. If there is a risk of another correction, it will probably happen in August or September; not likely in July. Of note have been oil prices, seeing a sharp spike after the Israel/Iran conflict and the Iran bombings, but then falling equally as quickly. Oil prices have collapsed, sitting on support at the 50-DMA, and still on a sell signal. It would be no surprise to see oil bounce a bit from this level, but prices are going to remain stuck in the $60/bbl range for a while. Oil prices are being more reflective of economic data, which is showing sluggishness in the economy: Reduced economic demand = reduced demand for oil. Oil pries are actually telling us a lot about the economy, heading into the Summer. Knox and I recently had the incredible opportunity to go on a Compassion International vision trip to El Salvador. Today, I'm joined by my friend Nicki Koziarz to help recap this life-changing experience. Nicki is an author, Bible teacher, and podcaster—and also a mom of six, including three boys adopted from Haiti. She brings a powerful perspective on the global impact Compassion is making and the heartbreaking reality that, in many cases, poverty is the only reason a mother has to give up her child. We dive into how Compassion is partnering with local churches to go into the hardest places—providing food, medical care, and the hope of Christ to transform lives and futures. Nicki also shares about their amazing Survival Program, which walks alongside mothers from pregnancy through a child's first year, ensuring families have the support they need to stay together when possible. I'm so grateful for the chance to witness firsthand what God is doing through Compassion in El Salvador—and I can't wait to share more with you in this episode. How are markets reacting to the weekend bombings in Iran? Futures are slightly positive. On Friday markets sold off, landing right on top of the 20-DMA; the market continues to work along this support line after working off about half of the over bought condition. Looking ahead to next month, July tends to be a stronger period, going into the third quarter, and buy back windows reopen. There may be a decent entry point by the end of this week. The Dollar was already beginning to rally prior to the weekend's geopolitical news, and there is a huge short position on the Dollar. If the US Dollar Index gets to 99- or 100, look for a pretty sharp rally in the Dollar as those shorts are forced to cover. And any rise in the Dollar is going to weigh on assets that are traded in dollars. For Oil Prices, the big concern is what's happening in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a backbone of oil prices; oil prices had spiked following the weekend's attacks, but have been cooling over the past few hours. Gold prices similarly had a lot of early gains on Sunday, but are starting to give up a large portion of those gains this morning. This Day in Legal History: Atkins v. VirginiaOn June 20, 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a landmark ruling in Atkins v. Virginia, holding that the execution of individuals with intellectual disabilities violates the Eighth Amendment's prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment. The case centered on Daryl Renard Atkins, who was convicted of abduction, armed robbery, and capital murder in Virginia. During the penalty phase of his trial, defense attorneys presented evidence that Atkins had an IQ of 59 and functioned at the level of a child. Despite this, he was sentenced to death. In a 6-3 decision, the Court reversed its earlier stance from Penry v. Lynaugh (1989), which had allowed such executions. Justice John Paul Stevens, writing for the majority, emphasized the "evolving standards of decency" in American society, noting that a growing number of states had barred the death penalty for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The Court recognized that such defendants are at a heightened risk of wrongful execution due to difficulties in assisting their own defense and the possibility of false confessions. The decision did not establish a national standard for determining intellectual disability, leaving that to the states, but it set a constitutional floor by barring executions in these cases outright. Atkins significantly reshaped the legal landscape of capital punishment, prompting states to revise death penalty statutes and sentencing procedures. The ruling reinforced the importance of individualized sentencing and safeguarded vulnerable populations from the most severe penalties. It also underscored the role of psychological and scientific evidence in constitutional interpretation. While not without criticism, Atkins remains a cornerstone of Eighth Amendment jurisprudence and a key moment in the Court's ongoing reevaluation of capital punishment.Technology giants Apple and Meta are currently facing possible penalties under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), but the European Commission has decided not to immediately fine them—even if they don't fully comply by the deadline next week.In April, both companies were fined—€500 million for Apple and €200 million for Meta—and given 60 days (ending 26 June) to align their practices with DMA requirements. Apple was penalized for preventing app developers from directing users to alternatives outside its platform, infringing DMA fairness rules. Meta was fined for its “pay or consent” system, which required users to either pay for an ad-free experience or agree to extensive personal data use; the Commission saw this as limiting user choice.Since November 2024, Meta has offered a new, lower-data personalized advertising model, which remains under Commission review. The current situation involves ongoing dialogue: any future fines will depend on the outcome of that review and will be imposed only after detailed assessments, rather than automatically once the deadline passed. These April fines were deliberately modest—reflecting the short duration of non-compliance and signaling the EU's priority on achieving compliance over punishment, marking a softer approach compared to previous, harsher antitrust actions. The situation also plays into broader economic tensions: EU leaders have threatened digital advertising taxes in response to recent US tariffs, while a US trade report criticized EU digital regulation as a trade barrier.Tech giants Apple and Meta to escape sanctions for failing to meet EU digital rules | EuronewsA U.S. appeals court has temporarily allowed Donald Trump to retain control over California's National Guard, despite a legal challenge from California Governor Gavin Newsom. The decision from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals pauses an earlier ruling by Judge Charles Breyer, who found Trump had unlawfully federalized the Guard without meeting statutory requirements or adequately coordinating with Newsom. The court stated Trump likely acted within his authority and that even if coordination with the governor was insufficient, Newsom lacked the power to override a presidential order. Still, the court left open the possibility of further challenges under laws barring federal troops from engaging in domestic law enforcement. Newsom plans to pursue his challenge, arguing Trump is misusing military force against civilians. The case stems from Trump's deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 U.S. Marines to Los Angeles earlier in June to suppress protests tied to his immigration policies—actions Newsom said infringed on state sovereignty and legal limits on military involvement in civilian matters. The Trump administration argued troops are protecting federal property, not performing law enforcement.During a hearing, the appellate judges examined whether courts can assess a president's decision to federalize troops under a law allowing such moves only during invasion, rebellion, or when civilian enforcement fails. The court found the last condition may have applied, given protest-related violence. However, it rejected the Justice Department's claim that such presidential decisions are beyond judicial review. The Insurrection Act and related federalization authority are central to this case. The Act allows a president to take control of a state's National Guard in limited situations—such as rebellion or when laws can't be enforced by normal means. This case illustrates both the expansive view of executive power and the judiciary's role in checking it, even amid claims of national emergency.US court lets Trump keep control of California National Guard for nowPresident Trump has once again extended the deadline for TikTok to be sold to a U.S. owner, granting a third 90-day reprieve through an executive order despite lacking a clear legal basis for the extensions. The move allows TikTok to continue operating in the U.S. while negotiations persist to transfer ownership from China-based ByteDance to an American entity. The previous extension fell through when China withdrew from talks following Trump's new tariffs. This delay has not yet faced a court challenge, even though the original ban—passed by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court—briefly took effect in January. Trump's personal popularity on the platform, where he has more than 15 million followers, adds a political twist to the ongoing negotiations. TikTok praised the decision and emphasized its importance to 170 million users and 7.5 million U.S. businesses.Despite concerns from national security officials and lawmakers like Senator Mark Warner, who accuse the administration of ignoring known risks, the repeated extensions suggest a softening of resolve. Analysts describe the situation as a recurring political maneuver with no clear endpoint—likening it to the endless debates over the debt ceiling.Meanwhile, TikTok continues to roll out new features and expand its services, including AI tools debuted in Cannes, signaling confidence in its long-term U.S. presence. Tech giants Apple, Google, and Oracle remain engaged with TikTok, reassured that the administration won't penalize them under current law.Public opinion has shifted, with fewer Americans now supporting a ban compared to 2023. Concerns remain over data privacy, but many citizens are unsure or opposed to banning the app outright.Trump extends TikTok ban deadline for a third time, without clear legal basisThis week's closing theme is by Johann Sebastian Bach. Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the most influential composers in Western music history, composed the Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, in 1741. Originally written for harpsichord, the work consists of an aria followed by 30 variations, returning to the aria at the end in a da capo structure. It was likely commissioned by Count Hermann Karl von Keyserlingk, a Russian diplomat suffering from insomnia, who wanted music to soothe his sleepless nights—though this origin story is debated. The aria, which opens and closes the piece, is a gentle, sarabande-like melody in G major. Unlike other variation sets built on melodies, Bach bases the Goldberg Variations on the aria's bass line and harmonic structure. This allows for extraordinary variety in texture, form, and mood across the variations, while keeping a consistent foundation. The aria itself is simple and elegant, consisting of two balanced halves, each repeated. Its serene tone contrasts with the technical brilliance and contrapuntal complexity found in many of the following variations. Yet, the aria's emotional restraint and clarity set the tone for the entire cycle.Over the centuries, the Goldberg Variations have come to be seen as a pinnacle of keyboard composition. The aria, both opening and closing the work, serves as a kind of spiritual bookend—calm, contemplative, and timeless. Performers often approach it with reverence, as a moment of stillness and symmetry amid musical adventure.Without further ado, Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations, BMV 988 – the aria. Enjoy! Markets sold off slightly on Friday on concerns over the Iran-Israel conflict, down to the 20-DMA, which has been good support for markets. Markets remain over bought, and markets started on Friday to work off some of that "overboughtedness, and this morning futures are pointing higher. Interestingly, while retail investors are fully into the markets, institutional investors have been woefully underweight equities, and have some catching up to do. As markets continue to push higher, each of the interim dips are being bought up by institutional investors, which will continue to be the case as we approach the end of this month, and the end of the quarter, the end of the reporting period for hedge funds and portfolios. We believe the next two weeks will see more buying pressure as these groups reallocate capital to bolster their portfolio performance. The US Dollar, meanwhile, has been under pressure, trying to set a double bottom in order to set up for a counter-trend rally. There's a ton of negative sentiment on the Dollar, with the short-dollar trade the most over-crowded, presently. Something will cause a shift back into the US Dollar, and create a potential rally to between $97 and $103. A stronger Dollar will attract foreign investors back into the US, with a positive effect on domestic markets. Small Cap stocks have been on a tear lately, and lost of speculative bets are being placed on Small Caps. You may recall, Smapp Caps got beaten up in April, and have had a nice rally since. We are advising caution at this elevated level, approaching the 200-DMA, and take some profits sooner than later. There's real risk to Small Cap stocks economically; economnic data is showing slowing, and that is going to impede earnings at some point. It's important to note that 40% of Small Cap stocks are not profitable, particularly in the Russell 2000, which is also approaching its 200-DMA and is very over bought on multiple levels. These stocks perform best coming out of a recessionary cycle, and right now is the wrong side of that cycle. While the S&P is near all-time highs, Small Caps are way, way back. The Rally continues with the Bulls in control since April 9, but not much has happened. Markets needed a reason to sell, and Tariffs gave them that reason, but that is all over with. That's why you have to be careful with narratives. Markets move past them quickly, and it's on to the next issue or event. Weekly buy signals now suggest the correction is complete, Bulls are back in control, and all time highs are just a breath away. We're seeing improvements in sentiment and breadth; we're in th emiddle of a reversal process. However, there is an expectation of a relaxation of what's going on: Money flows are ebbing, sellers are exhausted, and buyers are slowing. That suggests that markets are going to consolidate, or pullback to support at the 200-DMA. The markets sold off last week in a much-needed correction. Market support coalesced around the 100- and 200-DMA at 5,790. Markets will bounce off that level today. A MACD sell signal is being triggered at a very high level, and we're not over sold quite yet, so markets are not finished with the relaxation/consolidation phase. There is still risk for markets, temporarily; there could be a pullback to the 50-DMA. The 6,000 level on the S&P will be a challenge at this point. Remember, June tends to be a weaker month for markets (and corporate share buy backs go away); July tends to be stronger (and buy back activity returns). If you have not yet rebalanced your portfolio against risk, today would be a good day to do so. Today Eryn Lynum joins me to share about the beautiful connection between nature and rest. Sabbath has become such a hot topic right now but Eryn had to learn from age 14 how to rest like her life depended on it when she was diagnosed with Addison's disease. She is now a homeschooling mom of four, a master naturalist, author, and business owner. Her family is committed to their family values and weekly sabbath amid a very full life. She reminds us of some deep ancient truths that God created us to fully live and gives us tools to find new rhythms. We explore: How Jesus taught through nature The meaning of “Shabbat” — to stop and to delight How to build in Selah pauses (even if you only have 5 minutes!)
Markets sold off Wednesday, and we're still approaching a sell signal, which will be mild, at best. The 20-DMA has been very quietly sneaking up on the 100- and 200-DMA alignments. This is building a lot of support around 5,750. Yesterday's pullback was a much-needed event. The 50-DMA has also bottomed and is now turning positive, which is also supportive for higher stock prices. This sell off was not the beginning of the next leg down for the markets, but it is the pullback needed to get markets in a better position. Economic growth is still around 2.3%, employment data is fine, and there is no apparent sign of recession. Economically-sensitive sectors are continuing to perform well, which tells us that markets are okay with economic growth. Interestingly, without Fed intervention, interest rates have risen to about where economic growth should be. By the way, Bitcoin has been on FIRE lately, hitting new records at $110,000 Wednesday. Bitcoin is extremely over bought. Bitcoin is a great proxy for stocks and risk-taking. Right about now is when you should take a little bit of profits. This year's festival brings together a distinguished roster of William Adam's former students—many of whom are among today's leading trumpet artists—for four days of inspiration, performance, and pedagogy. In the spirit of Mr. Adam's legacy, the festival offers a rich mix of masterclasses, performances, complimentary private and group lessons, and targeted seminars on topics such as jazz improvisation, orchestral playing, trumpet fundamentals, and effective teaching. Special programming is available for younger students and their educators. William Adam taught trumpet at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music from 1946 to 1988 and continued teaching privately until his passing in 2013. Widely regarded as one of the most influential trumpet pedagogues of the 20th century, his teaching emphasized sound, simplicity, and personal connection. The annual festival ensures his philosophy continues to inspire new generations of trumpet players. About Our Panelists: Bobby Burns Jr. is a longtime member of Earth, Wind & Fire and a veteran of the Los Angeles music scene. After studying with the legendary Bill Adam at Indiana University—where he overcame early challenges to earn a degree in trumpet performance—Bobby moved to L.A., balancing day jobs with gigs until establishing a full-time music career. His versatile résumé spans symphonic, studio, and touring work, with credits including The Temptations, Tony Bennett, Dr. Dre, and Broadway productions like Evita and A Chorus Line. Since joining Earth, Wind & Fire in 2004, he has performed on major stages around the world, from the White House to the Grammys. Bobby is also an active educator, passionate about mentoring the next generation of musicians. Charley Davis is a versatile trumpeter, respected educator, and innovative designer with a career spanning over three decades. A fixture in the Los Angeles studio scene, Charley has performed with legends like Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole, Buddy Rich, and Placido Domingo, and his credits range from motion pictures and Broadway shows to big bands and Las Vegas stages. He currently teaches at Cal State Long Beach, Citrus College, and the Henry Mancini Institute, where he's known for his deep diagnostic insight and mentorship. Charley is also the founder of Charles Davis Music Products, producing a signature line of trumpets and mutes that reflect his commitment to excellence in both sound and craftsmanship. Robert Slack is a seasoned trumpeter, educator, and recording artist with a master's degree in trumpet performance from Indiana University, where he studied under the legendary William Adam. His diverse career has included everything from orchestras and brass ensembles to touring with Buddy Rich and Paul Anka, and performing in Las Vegas showrooms with stars like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Now based in Los Angeles, Robert has built an extensive studio career with credits spanning film, television, and commercial work. He currently serves as trumpet professor at Azusa Pacific University, where he's been on faculty for over 18 years. Larry Hall is one of Los Angeles' top session trumpet players, known for his versatility across virtually every musical style. A former student of William Adam at Indiana University, Larry has built a prolific recording career with credits spanning film, television, and albums for artists including Elton John, The Jacksons, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Placido Domingo. His ability to adapt his sound to any musical context has made him a first-call player in the L.A. studio scene. Dr. Karl Sievers is a distinguished performer and educator whose career spans orchestral, jazz, and commercial music. A former student of William Adam, he holds a DMA in trumpet performance and recently retired as a Presidential Professor at the University of Oklahoma. When he's not performing, he enjoys fitness, motorcycles, fishing, and time with family. Gino Muñoz is a versatile musician, educator, and entrepreneur with over two decades of professional performance experience, including work with Michael Bublé and Gwen Stefani. A proud alumnus and now full-time faculty member at Citrus College, Gino has played a key role in shaping the school's acclaimed Instrumental Music program. He has played lead or split lead trumpet with groups like The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and the Bill Holman Big Band, and is a longtime faculty member at Citrus College. As a bandleader and recording artist, Tony's projects—such as his original album The Gates of Hell and the genre-blending Los Angeles Classic Rock Orchestra—showcase his creative range. His latest work, L.A.'s Finest, is an ambitious double album featuring top musicians from across the country. Markets have enjoyed a 19% rally from the Liberation Day lows (such declines do not happen often, and worth paying attention to when they do). Markets are currently around 2% below all-time highs, having almost fully-recovered from the decline in just the last three weeks. In terms of momentum and market strength, we're extremely over bought, and the markets need a pause to refresh. The Moody's Debt Downgrade will provide pressure on the bond and stock markets, which is no surprise. Will the Moody's move be the event that brings sellers to market? Markets will pull back; but if we're going to advance again to new, all-time highs, markets will need to hold at support at about the 200-DMA. If that fails, markets will drop down to the 50- and 20-DMA, around 5,550-ish.
