Moments after the heart stops the entire circulatory system finally has a chance to bring venous and arterial pressures to equilibrium. Cardiac arrest resuscitation requires the provider to have a strong mental model of physiology and the logistics to carry out a series of interventions crucial to preserving life. This class will serve not as a routine basic life support model, but as a deeper understanding and framework to guide resuscitation during your next cardiac arrest.
The pandemic ushered in a plethora of pivots in EMS education. How did educators Tom Bouthillet, Paul Pepe and Peter Antevy put together 30 hours of free online education? What does the future of EMS education hold? Is it mostly online? Should we go back to in-person courses? Join hosts Hilary Gates and Rob Lawrence as they discuss with Tom and Peter EMS education models, quality control, culture hurdles and British tacos. This podcast is sponsored by EMS Gives Life. Great episode with Tom! He will definitely be back. CLICK HERE to submit your questions for the next episode You can also email us at RSIPodcast@FOAMfrat.com 1) My question is for Tom, but Jared and Mike please feel free to weigh in. First off, congratulations on your retirement! I have been a paramedic for a while and did not learn 12 lead EKG interpretation during my initial training. I feel like I have a good ability to identify the obvious STEMI findings in a 12 lead like 2 contiguous leads and reciprocal changes. My question is, to build my abilities past this basic understanding what are 3 easy things that I could start adding that might help me to identify high risk patients. I am looking for a good place to start advancing and am not sure where to start. Jared's most recent blog on PreOx 4) I have taken the time to hone my ECG interpretation skills beyond what I think most paramedics would find rational. Do you think having an advanced level of ECG interpretation is a "waste of time"? Why or why not? 5) Public safety careers are so rewarding that it sometimes seems as though people get to the point that they hate it in order to retire. What was your experience and what advice do you have for people getting ready to take this step? We really appreciate your support and participation. Get your questions in now. We are looking forward to hearing from you. Jared & Mike

During these challenging times (Aren't you sick of getting those emails?), Battalion Chief Tom Bouthillet saw an opportunity to improve EMT and Paramedic education and decided not to just watch it go by. The result was an entirely online education program that offered 30 hours of Continuing Credit Units for providers stuck at home due to Covid restrictions. And he didn't just read some slides on a cell phone camera and upload it to Youtube. Calling in heavy hitters in the Pre-Hospital world, Tom lined up the folks who literally wrote the book in their respective fields to give engaging presentations unlike the EMS profession has ever seen. HM and MC ask Chief Bouthillet: What was the inspiration behind Refresh2021? Why was the decision made to make the content free on ProdigyEMS.com? Who are some of the experts presenting at Refresh2021? Is this format the future for EMS education?

His writings have been referenced in the American Heart Journal, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Cardiovascular Interventions and the EP Lab Digest. We talk about EMS life on Hilton Head, his new promotion, Tom's early interest in cardiovascular care, the Academy and leadership.
In the Lean community (and in businesses and hospitals, as well), people often talk about "fire fighting" in a colloquial way. Today, my guest for episode #278 of the podcast is an actual professional fire fighter, Tom Bouthillet (@tbouthillet on Twitter). He serves as Fire Captain / Paramedic for the Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue where he is the Cardiac Care Program Manager (STEMI and CARES Site Coordinator). In this episode, we discuss the role of Lean and process improvement in fire departments and EMS, why blame is "completely ineffective" as a strategy, why "unsafe supervision" is a problem (and what that means), and why it's necessary to build in quality instead of just inspecting for quality.
