Claire de Mézerville López welcomes Dr. Jasmine A. Lee and Dr. Ciara R. Christian to the Restorative Works! Podcast.  Claire is joined again by co-host and IIRP Lecturer Kiyaana Cox Jones. In this series of episodes, we explore the use of restorative practices in higher education through various aspects of the college and university sphere. Dr. Christian and Dr. Lee share insights from their roles as co-directors of the Center for Social Justice Dialogue at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in the Division of Institutional Equity, highlighting the intersection of restorative practices and social justice education. They delve into the critical considerations for dignified intercultural and intergroup experiences, emphasizing the importance of identity, systemic awareness, and creating spaces for authentic dialogue across differences. As Dr. Lee eloquently states, "The goal is to widen the crack where we refuse to see each other as fundamentally opposed, fostering spaces for transformation and collective growth." Dr. Lee is a diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice scholar, practitioner, trainer, and coach. She has spent over 15 years in higher education, working with students, staff, and faculty to create inclusive campus environments through direct programming and strategic campus-wide leadership, and currently serves as the Associate Vice President for Community and Culture at UMBC. Beyond higher ed, Dr. Lee works with K-12 institutions, non-profit organizations, and faith-based communities to provide training, consulting, coaching, and organizational change services, partnering with clients to curate unique, engaging solutions that lead to sustainable, measurable change. Dr. Lee is a qualified administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI), a certified diversity trainer with the National Coalition Building Institute, a Restorative Practices trainer, and a certified Mental Health First Aid instructor, and uses these skills to ensure human dignity, love, truth, honesty, and empathy are a part of all approaches to organizational change. Dr. Christian has been professionally engaged in diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice work for over a decade. Dr. Christian discovered her passion for this work as a result of her experiences in the Peace Corps, where she both noticed and experienced gaps in cultural competency within the organization. This experience served as a catalyst for her return to higher education, allowing her to more deeply explore identity development, social inequality, and social change. Ultimately, this led her to intergroup dialogue as a vehicle for helping others to engage deeply about and across differences. Her practice is rooted in an ethic of radical, revolutionary love and a commitment to helping others see and center our shared humanity.  Tune in to explore how restorative practices embody revolutionary love, inviting us to wonder deeply about each other's humanity and to navigate conflict and grief with empathy and accountability.

Dr. Michelle Starz-Gaiano is Professor and Chair of Biological Sciences at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Michelle's research uses fruit flies to examine how cells in the body go to the right place at the right time. Understanding why and how cells use their genetic information to move through the body is critical because if this movement doesn't happen correctly, it could, for example, impact embryo development or affect how immune cells mobilize after an injury. Conversely, preventing cancer cells from moving could keep cancer from spreading to other parts of the body. Michelle often spends her free time cooking and baking. Her kitchen looks a little like a lab, and she enjoys experimenting with making different foods. Michelle and her family also like to spend time together, travel, and listen to music. She received her bachelor's degree in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her PhD in Developmental Genetics from New York University. Afterwards, Michelle completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She joined UMBC in 2008 and has received the Donald Creighton Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the UMBC Graduate Student Association for her excellent mentorship. In our interview, she shares more about her life and science.

When DEI Is Off the Table: How Higher Ed Leaders Can Still Drive Institutional Change

Higher education's approach to DEI is under fire—from political pressure, public skepticism, and internal fatigue. But abandoning DEI isn't the only option. In this episode of Changing Higher Ed®, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Columbia Law professor Susan Sturm about how higher ed institutions can continue to drive inclusive institutional change—without relying on traditional DEI frameworks that may no longer be viable. Sturm, author of What Might Be: Confronting Racism to Transform Our Institutions, reframes DEI as a long-term, systems-level strategy rooted in leadership, trust, and organizational learning. She introduces the concept of “full participation,” where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive and contribute to the institution's mission—and outlines the leadership mindsets and practices necessary to build that reality. Through examples from UMBC, Columbia, and court systems, Sturm shows how change begins with local experimentation, paradox navigation, and support for “organizational catalysts” who bridge across roles and perspectives. She also explores how discomfort, conflict, and even failure can become engines for cultural learning—if leaders are willing to embrace vulnerability and complexity. Topics Covered: Why current DEI models fall short in higher education The paradox of racial salience and its impact on reform How institutions can foster “full participation” Why local experimentation drives scalable change The role of discomfort and rupture in institutional learning How to resource and support internal change agents What boards and presidents must do to align DEI with strategy Three Key Takeaways for Leadership: Train leaders to recognize and hold paradox—not resolve it Invest in internal catalysts who can bridge across silos and groups Reframe DEI as mission-aligned infrastructure, not add-on programming Recommended For: Presidents, provosts, board members, DEI officers, and change leaders looking to move beyond check-the-box diversity efforts and create meaningful, sustainable institutional change. On today's episode we hear a rebroadcast of the 2025 UMBC Mullen Lecture, sponsored by UMBC's Center for Social Science Scholarship and the UMBC Department of Economics. This year's lecture was delivered by Dr. Annamaria Lusardi. Dr. Lusardi is Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, Director of the Initiative for Financial Decision-Making, and Professor (by courtesy) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Dr. Lusardi's remarks take up the question of financial literacy among ordinary people around the world. In the talk, we learn about how much people know about personal finance, who is most vulnerable to economic predations due to their lack of financial literacy, and what we can do about it.  Check out the following links for more information on UMBC, CS3, and our host: The UMBC Center for the Social Sciences Scholarship The University of Maryland, Baltimore County Ian G.
