Carla Molinaro is a record breaking ultrarunner, adventurer and running coach. Carla has represented Great Britain at the 50Km & 100Km World Championships and in 2023 she won the IAU 50Km World Championships while also leading the Great Britain Women's Team to Team Gold. She has also earned two Gold Medal's at Comrades (the oldest and largest ultra marathon in the world) and set a World Record for running the length of Great Britain, a distance of 1,327km. Carla completed the distance in an incredible time of 12 days, 30 minutes and 14 seconds! For me, it has an effect of memories, and special moments. Crossing the finish line of the Two Oceans Ultra, or the Dubai Marathon, or surviving a wet cold Polish 42,2Km. Memories, and good ones at that. Plus, they remind me that each race, each event had me follow and adhere to a process. And of course, till date there was not a easy race amongst them. The strange part is, that ever so often, clients will comment on the medals and immediately project this on to themselves. Ranging from “oh whow, I never did that marathon”, or “sure whish I could one day run one marathon, would be enough for me”. You can relate to these types of topics? As though the run for me was somehow easier. Or like I was a pro runner. Won races and made it to Olympics. LOL. I am not by the way. Nope, didn't go to any Olympics, yes, won a race once twice actually but just as a recreational runner. And winning was never the objective. Rather running is just something that stuck with me throughout my life. And yes, since my childhood actually. Over 35 years of running, from just becoming fit, to surviving military training… and then discovering the freedom and the possibilities associated with which you can perform this sport. Of course as a certified run coach, I do offer workshops, well when COVID restrictions allow it again, I also train athletes, especially those with ambition. What I don't do is give advice or talk on topics such as apparel, shoes, gels etc. But you know there are a lot of mental tools you can use all by yourself. A lot of the material I talk about and present is based on solution-oriented short-term coaching. At the end of the day, all things considered. You know what is best for you. You might not be in a situation to decide, or to find and access this. But we are all unique, and with these tools that I talk about I it is my hope you will use them and work with them. To work with self-hypnosis, mental training, suggestions, and in being able to make new goals, and go for them. That's why I set this all up in such a way that you can access this at your liking. Of course, there are some advanced courses that are there in case you are serious about unleashing your potential.

In this episode we speak to the Smling Champion, Gerda Steyn.Gerda is a South African marathon and ultramarathon athlete. She set the Comrades Marathon up-run record in 2019 with a time of 5:58:53, becoming the first woman under 6 hours for that race. She also won the 2019 Two Oceans Marathon in a time of 3:31:28. Her best time for a standard marathon was 2:27:48, achieved in 2019 in the New York City Marathon.Questions we asked Gerda:1. You grew up on a farm in a small town of Bothaville in the Free State. Was running part of your life growing up? 2. You discovered your talent for running later in life. At which point did you realise you have the potential to win races? 3. Who was/is the biggest influencer in your life? 4. There is a story that you tell about Nic Bester saying to you that if/when you run a marathon in under 3 hours, you should give him a call and he will become your coach. What do you think Nic saw in you that is different from other runners? 5. You broke the Comrades up record in 2019, becoming the first women to run the up run in under 6 hours, after you won the Two Oceans Ultra marathon earlier that same year. What other running goals are there for you after such an amazing year? 6. Like for all of us 2020 did not pan out as we planned. How has the pandemic restructured your planning and training for 2020 /2021? 7. The Comrades & Two Oceans are the biggest running events on the running calendar in South Africa.8. We were extremely proud to have seen you line up for the New York Marathon and in 2019 you also ran the fastest marathon time for a South African woman. Would it be one of your goals to win any of the big international city marathons? 9. The last few years was like a whirlwind for you since becoming an elite athlete. What are some of the biggest life lessons that you have learned through competing in these tough and challenging races? 10. She says she is a 33 year old female, she's been running on and off for the last 5 years. She is 1.65m tall and currently weighs 62kg. Her current 5km pb is just under 33 min and her pb for 10km is just under 72. She tries to run 3 to 4 times a week with one 10km thrown in there as her long run. She also spins 3 times a week and tries to swim twice a week. She is working hard on her 5km time trial session to improve her speed as you suggest in the podcasts that we have done. What she wants to know is how much should she be running now and when should she start upping the training? Do you have a Two Oceans programme she can follow or can she modify one of the Comrades Marathon training programme, and if so how can she go about doing that?
